Lovely spot in historic DT Blue Ridge located inside a formally restored 1926 banking institution. While some have the option to dine inside the actual vault I opted to step out & dine in the general area where the tellers might have been back in the day. There's just something about a huge steel door potentially closing that makes me a little uneasy! But the concept it great! Service was warm & welcoming. Food was good but our mushroom came out a bit cold in the middle. No biggie because the corn bread was a really winner & you MUST get it even if for a nibble! The porterhouse style porkchop was amazing & my Ruben was pretty decent in taste & sharing size! The full bar is great so they should be able to whip up whatever your heart's desire. What a difference a year makes. We have been dining at General Ledger consistently for the past year and have noticed month over month our experience declining. Our recent visit was an all time low. The service was not just bad but unacceptable. The non caring attitude from our waiter was disappointing and after bringing it to the managers attention she just dismissed it. We ordered drinks to start that we had to inquire about after finishing our apps as no drink had arrived after 20 min. As far as the food the Salmon we ordered as rare as possible was grossly overcooked. The pork was then undercooked from our order and had a weird taste the we barely touched it. The easiest of the order the burger only issue the burger came to the table with no burger and a tomato. That's right we ordered a burger no tomato and they brought the plate out with a Bun, Tomato lettuce, onion but NO burger. When we finished the entree (which were hardly touched) we asked for the warm Chocolate chip cookie, the waiter told us it takes 20 minutes. How about letting customers know when you go over the menu that certain desserts take 20 minutes. Bottom line the attitude of the waiter the lack of action from the manager and 3 of our 4 entrees being less than satisfactory it is time for us to take a permanent break from General Ledger, especially with so many good options downtown. I ordered the special, a 10 oz prime rib and my dining mate ordered the pecan crusted trout. Both dinners delicious. My prime rib cooked to order. Portion sizes all good, food plated nicely. Came with the family as we were in the area visiting and once again you trustee YELPERS guided us, right! We did a call ahead so we were seated immediately on arrival. This is a very quaint little restaurant built in an old banking site. The ambience is very interesting. There was live music throughout our lunch, which made it even more interesting because we are a musical family! Our server was very friendly and took our order almost immediately. The wifey ordered the Reuben Sandwich and she loved it. I was in the mood for a good old American cheeseburger, and I was not disappointed at all.. It was very busy but they were able to accommodate us about 10 minutes early and give us a relatively private area for a large group. We were in town for a bachelorette weekend (total of 8 ladies) and was spending Friday night in town so we came here for dinner. I called about 2 weeks before and made a reservation for us. We had seen online that there was a vault that you could sit in (this restaurant used to be an old bank) so I did try to request it but it wasn't guaranteed. When we arrived, we were not seated in the vault (which was fine). Our server greeted us right away and got our drink orders in, etc. We ordered some apps - pork belly, cornbread, fried green tomatoes and salmon dip. The salmon dip was SOOOO good, that was my favorite for sure. The fried green tomatoes and cornbread were also good. I did not try the pork belly, but heard from the other girls that they enjoyed it. For entrees, a lot of the ladies ordered one of the specials, which was a fish dish with gnocchi. Unfortunately, the gnocchi was not cooked correctly and nobody liked that part of their dish. The rest of it was good they said, it had great flavor. I ordered the pescatore pasta and I really enjoyed that - good flavor, good amount of lobster, calamari and shrimp! The server was a nice guy, but was not particularly comfortable in my dining experience, both due to the food itself, style of service, and ambiance. Starting with the food, my girlfriend and I got the following items: -the cornbread -fried green tomatoes -general ledger salad -pecan crusted trout -chicken cordon blue sandwich The cornbread was good, but could've used some salt. The fried green tomatoes were pretty tasty. The general ledger salad wasn't bad, but it was confused-- lots of sweet elements (craisins, candy pecans, citrus) that overpowered dish; goat cheese was delicious, but it was pretty hard to break it up with the tiny little bowls the dish came in. Mixed bag overall. The Pecan-crusted trout was not crusted with anything and flavorless; a meager amount of sauce that was sickly sweet and just didn't fit, flavor-wise; the fish was well cooked though. Chicken Cordon Blue was good, but... weird Caesar salad. Quite possibly the worst Caesar I've had... the sweet croutons feels like this restaurant's version of the imperial system (pointless and bad, but they're doin' it anyways). Ambiance-wise, we didn't appreciate everybody in the restaurant cleaning up & prepping to go so loudly, as we felt like we had to dash out (we had a 7:45 res & they close at 9, so I understand we've somewhat to blame, but there was a point where the plate-clacking of people clearing tables was louder than anything else in the space). Let me tell you that we have been here before twice and we had to make reservations way in advanced. It is THAT GOOD!. If you are in Blue Ridge, this restaurant needs to be in your list of restaurants to visit. It is located in the main street in a beautiful historic bank building from the 1920's hence the name, General Ledger. It even still has the original vault. To make things even cooler, you can reserve to eat with your party inside! If you go, you must order their cast-iron cornbread, green chilis, cheddar cheese, sweet corn & served with honey butter. I could just eat it all by myself. Our server recommended we ordered the Crispy Crab Fritters blue crab, shrimp, lobster ginger sauce, pepper relish. The sauce was the perfect complement to the cornbread. We ordered from their lunch specials menu the meatloaf. Oh boy! it was mouthwatering. The meat was so tender and juicy. We ended up sharing it. Add this place to your Blue Ridge restaurant bucket list because it's so worth it! I actually found rave reviews on a random blogger I watched and decided I must try. Just in case, I made a reservation for Thursday dinner. The day of our reservation, someone called me to confirm our reservation. It wasn't quite a full house on Thursday, but was pretty busy. We were seated right away to our table upon checking in. We perused the regular menu and the special menu that offered things like meat loaf, NY strip (the only two things I could remember on top of my head). While they have a lot of wine and liquor options to choose from, their cocktails selections were funky. My husband ended up ordering an old fashioned and an espresso martini for me. I was worried when the server asked if I wanted cream or not, so I opted for no cream mostly because I'm lactose intolerant. When the drinks arrived to the table, I noticed that my martini was a light brown color. It was not a traditional martini but it was fine for what it was. The food though is where it's at! We started the cornbread skillet with bits of jalapeños and topped with butter. I thought the added jalapeños balanced out the sweetness of the cornbread. I loved the crunch sides since it was cooked on a cast iron. Easily shareable and our group of 2 didn't finish the cornbread. For entree. I ordered the General Ledger salad with goat cheese and steak cooked medium rare as the added protein (yes, goat cheese still has lactose but has lower amounts of lactose than cow's milk so don't came at me, lol). It's a big serving of salad with two golf ball size pieces of goat cheese coated in panko crust. Dressing was delicious and loved the added crunch from the pecans. The steak though was cooked perfectly and marinated in some sweet/vinegar/garlicky-based marinate because it was so flavorful! My husband ordered one of the specials - 12oz NY strip that was served with risotto and green beans. He enjoyed the steak but thought the risotto was a little undercooked. Green beans were still crunchy and delicious. We inhaled both of our entrees, then comes our wonderful server asking if we wanted dessert. So duh, and she brought us a menu. This is where our wonderful meal went downhill. We opted for the fruit cobbler of the day, which happens to be peach. Our server did warn us that it's not a typical cobbler but it's more of a cake-y cobbler so we decided to try. Both of my husband and I love a good dessert and this just wasn't it for us. He didn't even touch it after the first bite and I only ended up eating the peaches; there was just something off about the dessert. Nevertheless, everything else we ate was good. Upon arriving, and throughout dinner service, the staff was a bit sassy and rude towards the people in our group. Service was okay, but definitely could have been better. The food was really good, and was a decent portion! Pricing for everything was also very fair. Overall I think this location has potential, and perhaps we came on an off night for service.
