We were in town for a bachelorette weekend (total of 8 ladies) and was spending Friday night in town so we came here for dinner. I called about 2 weeks before and made a reservation for us. We had seen online that there was a vault that you could sit in (this restaurant used to be an old bank) so I did try to request it but it wasn't guaranteed. The salmon dip was SOOOO good, that was my favorite for sure. The fried green tomatoes and cornbread were also good. I did not try the pork belly, but heard from the other girls that they enjoyed it. For entrees, a lot of the ladies ordered one of the specials, which was a fish dish with gnocchi. Unfortunately, the gnocchi was not cooked correctly and nobody liked that part of their dish. The rest of it was good they said, it had great flavor. I ordered the pescatore pasta and I really enjoyed that - good flavor, good amount of lobster, calamari and shrimp! It was very busy but they were able to accommodate us about 10 minutes early and give us a relatively private area for a large group. The service was very kind and attentive and our waitress was able to effectively and efficiently serve our table with a bright smile! The food itself was great! The cordon blue sandwich had so much flavor. I loved the addition of the red peppers as it really took it over the top. The white cheddar croquettes that I got as the side were tasty but needed a little salt. I tried my sister's burger and the patty was HUGE. The server was a nice guy, but was not particularly comfortable in my dining experience, both due to the food itself, style of service, and ambiance. Starting with the food, my girlfriend and I got the following items: -the cornbread -fried green tomatoes -general ledger salad -pecan crusted trout -chicken cordon blue sandwich The cornbread was good, but could've used some salt. The fried green tomatoes were pretty tasty. The general ledger salad wasn't bad, but it was confused-- lots of sweet elements (craisins, candy pecans, citrus) that overpowered dish; goat cheese was delicious, but it was pretty hard to break it up with the tiny little bowls the dish came in. Mixed bag overall. The Pecan-crusted trout was not crusted with anything and flavorless; a meager amount of sauce that was sickly sweet and just didn't fit, flavor-wise; the fish was well cooked though. Chicken Cordon Blue was good, but... weird Caesar salad. Quite possibly the worst Caesar I've had... the sweet croutons feels like this restaurant's version of the imperial system (pointless and bad, but they're doin' it anyways). Ambiance-wise, we didn't appreciate everybody in the restaurant cleaning up & prepping to go so loudly, as we felt like we had to dash out (we had a 7:45 res & they close at 9, so I understand we've somewhat to blame, but there was a point where the plate-clacking of people clearing tables was louder than anything else in the space). July 4th, 2024 - How lucky are we that the General Ledger has availability and on July 4th weekend. Let me tell you that we have been here before twice and we had to make reservations way in advanced. It is THAT GOOD!. If you are in Blue Ridge, this restaurant needs to be in your list of restaurants to visit. It is located in the main street in a beautiful historic bank building from the 1920's hence the name, General Ledger. It even still has the original vault. To make things even cooler, you can reserve to eat with your party inside! If you go, you must order their cast-iron cornbread, green chilis, cheddar cheese, sweet corn & served with honey butter. I could just eat it all by myself. Our server recommended we ordered the Crispy Crab Fritters blue crab, shrimp, lobster ginger sauce, pepper relish. The sauce was the perfect complement to the cornbread. We ordered from their lunch specials menu the meatloaf. Oh boy! it was mouthwatering. The meat was so tender and juicy. We ended up sharing it. Add this place to your Blue Ridge restaurant bucket list because it's so worth it! I actually found rave reviews on a random blogger I watched and decided I must try. Just in case, I made a reservation for Thursday dinner. The day of our reservation, someone called me to confirm our reservation. It wasn't quite a full house on Thursday, but was pretty busy. We were seated right away to our table upon checking in. We perused the regular menu and the special menu that offered things like meat loaf, NY strip (the only two things I could remember on top of my head). While they have a lot of wine and liquor options to choose from, their cocktails selections were funky. My husband ended up ordering an old fashioned and an espresso martini for me. I was worried when the server asked if I wanted cream or not, so I opted for no cream mostly because I'm lactose intolerant. When the drinks arrived to the table, I noticed that my martini was a light brown color. It was not a traditional martini but it was fine for what it was. The food though is where it's at! We started the cornbread skillet with bits of jalapeños and topped with butter. I thought the added jalapeños balanced out the sweetness of the cornbread. I loved the crunch sides since it was cooked on a cast iron. Easily shareable and our group of 2 didn't finish the cornbread. For entree. I ordered the General Ledger salad with goat cheese and steak cooked medium rare as the added protein (yes, goat cheese still has lactose but has lower amounts of lactose than cow's milk so don't came at me, lol). It's a big serving of salad with two golf ball size pieces of goat cheese coated in panko crust. Dressing was delicious and loved the added crunch from the pecans. The steak though was cooked perfectly and marinated in some sweet/vinegar/garlicky-based marinate because it was so flavorful! My husband ordered one of the specials - 12oz NY strip that was served with risotto and green beans. He enjoyed the steak but thought the risotto was a little undercooked. Green beans were still crunchy and delicious. We inhaled both of our entrees, then comes our wonderful server asking if we wanted dessert. So duh, and she brought us a menu. This is where our wonderful meal went downhill. We opted for the fruit cobbler of the day, which happens to be peach. Our server did warn us that it's not a typical cobbler but it's more of a cake-y cobbler so we decided to try. Both of my husband and I love a good dessert and this just wasn't it for us. He didn't even touch it after the first bite and I only ended up eating the peaches; there was just something off about the dessert. Nevertheless, everything else we ate was good. Had dinner here with a larger group and we sat inside the vault and it was such a fun time. The cornbread is unreal, the oysters were so good and the crab cake ball things were so good too. I got the blackened pork chop and it was exactly what the server described. A lot of my friends got the chicken pasta and they loved that. The restaurant is classy yet casual, the servers (ours was Keegan) are friendly and welcoming. The owner used to be a server and you can tell she runs the place as a family business. We ordered wings, a Cobb salad with shrimp, the ledger salad, burgers and cornbread. The burgers were well seasoned but the toppings were sparse, 1 slice of onion and 1 piece of lettuce. The Mac and cheese was amazing. The croquettes were AMAZINGGGG. GET THEM. If I could only eat carbs this is what I eat all day, think loaded potato marries sour cream and onion potato chips. The salads are huge and both the Cobb and Ledger salad were delicious. The Cobb dressing was interesting, sweeter than I prefer but still good. The Ledger salad, the fried goat cheese make you want to go to heaven. The wings were crisp, flavorful but didn't pack enough punch in the spice level. But would still order again. Upon arriving, and throughout dinner service, the staff was a bit sassy and rude towards the people in our group. Service was okay, but definitely could have been better. The food was really good, and was a decent portion! Pricing for everything was also very fair. Overall I think this location has potential, and perhaps we came on an off night for service. The best parts about the GL are the location, setting, ambiance, bar, and service (Valerie was so excellent), and wine list. The food is a bit hit or miss, but the hits are really good. First, if you enjoy bourbon, try their "S'mores Old Fashioned" Don't worry it's not sweeter than a regular old fashioned but their use of bitters is fantastic. Well done barkeeper team!!! Second, if they put quail on the menu, you must try it. This was some of the best quail I ever had in a special. Absolutely delicious. Also, we really liked the ruben, but the cornbread and the chocolate chip cookies were both too sweet for our taste. The caesar dressing also didn't have the "punch" that one expects from sardines.
