For a first time experience. I absolutely loved it! I walked in and the entire place looked beautiful. I love the decor and how everything is set up. I had a reservation and was seated immediately! That was the first box checked off my list... Second box checked was the service. Waiter was on point with everything and gave suggestions (which were amazing). Third and final box checked off my list was the bill... it was definitely worth what my husband and I had. 10/10 experience. Overall best Anniversary decision we've made so far! We started off with our drinks. Mango Margarita on the left and a pear drink I forget the name. But stunning recommendation! Secondly was our entrees. My husband got the Cowboy Steak medium well with a side of Mashed Potatoes. He said it was the best steak he has had and he loves his steaks lol! I got the Rack of Lamb Oscar Style! Wow wow wow..this a place to be seen & to see people! From the moment you walk in your eyes are directed in every direction. The bar is UHMAZING...and the drinks match the ambience. A French Martino isn't difficult but I've been to many places that destroy it....not here...my French was so yummy I had 2! Then we get seated & are rite by the kitchen, it was the best seat in the house to see the magic happening. We 3 enjoyed the Tomahawk, Mac & cheese & several other fab dishes. Every plate was better then the last..we couldn't stop commenting how delish it all is. The staff are on point & professional, we were never rushed & the volume around us was never to loud. What a gem. Randomly found this place and I am glad I did. It is an upscale steakhouse. It is more american than mexican in my opinion. They do have an enchilada of the day special on the menu and this time it was chicken. Pretty good but not the best I have had. The calamari was ok and they put fried jalapenos in there. Real ones not the pickled ones. The tuna tostada's were lovely. The chips and salsa that they give you when you sit down were nice and the salsa has a nice kick to it. The steaks were what you would expect from a nice steakhouse. The cookie skillet for 2 and flourless chocolate cake were a nice finish to the meal. Tried this spot for a "special" dinner with my wife and son. One and done. Overpriced steak. Not even top quality steak. I had salmon. Came to the table very rare. I told server I wanted a new piece of fish. If they were going to just finish the piece they just screwed up, I didn't want it. Plate came back to my table. Same piece I just sent back. I refused the plate and passed on dinner. If a restaurant screws up a simple dish like salmon TWICE, I don't want anything from that kitchen. Manager came to my table and gave a half ass apology. Offered to make me something else. I was very polite. Thanked him and declined his offer. This is where it got weird. He seemed offended and gave me a very odd long stare like I was offending him. He was lucky I was in a good mood and that I was with my family. Based on his behavior I should have told him or showed him what he could do with his attitude. A pricey upscale Mexican restaurant with a unique upscale refurbished barn feel, with waitstaff in chef jackets. Excellent short rib tacos that honestly didn't need to be deep fried. The additional oil took away from the excellence of the marinade and protein prep. Chicken Tinga tacos were very nice. Toca Vez salad was a nice take on a southwest salad. Attentive service, full bar, big steaks and standard steakhouse a la carte pricing at this newly remodeled place on a quiet part of Rte 202. Tables both upstairs and downstairs, quiet enough to talk easily, no outdoor dining at all. The Mexican influence here is mostly limited to the guacamole and tacos on the menu. Started with palomas and margaritas, about $12, tasty but surprisingly weak. Our steaks and lamb chops came out pretty much exactly as ordered altho we didn't order them swimming in butter, just a little crust on the meat, tender and juicy, very good, about $60 each. A side of shoestring fries were hot salty deliciousness, creamed spinach was very good, a side of brussel sprouts was just ok, all about $12. For dessert we split the tres leches & chocolate cakes, another $12 per, not made in house. I'm not a fan of mandatory valet parking out in the country. Oh if your ride is a stick shift you have to park it yourself lol. Why only three stars? The upselling was annoying, sauce extra $6 etc. And the price-quality balance wasn't there. What a great new addition to the restaurant scene in the area! A mexican steakhouse beautifully decorated and designed. Kudos to the design team! As to the food and cocktails, a total package. Although a bit pricier than average for a steakhouse, the prices warrant the quality. The raw fish appetizers were fresh and top quality on top of tastefully curated. The portions are substantial and by the time entrees came around, I was already feeling full. The shrimp risotto dish was fresh and buttery she the steak was cooked to perfect temperature and sear. The long-anticipated opening of Toca Vez, the Basking Ridge, Mexican inspired steakhouse has finally arrived. Great selection of Mexican inspired cocktails and the inside décor is trendy, upscale and a nice addition to the area. Also, valet parking appears mandatory so keep this in mind when visiting. Besides the décor and cocktail menu, the actual food offerings didn't showcase much Mexican inspiration at all to the final product. Our shared appetizer was tuna tostadas which was fine, but the tostadas were of Asian fusion and not Mexican. This follows the trend of most other area restaurants where anything tuna is automatically transformed into something Asian inspired. Why can't tuna be offered in other ethnic varieties? Hopefully Toca Vez can work out the kinks here and get the menu aligned with more traditional Mexican offerings. We also ordered the wedge salad which is easily sharable between 2 people. The salad was okay, heavily dressed and no Mexican inspiration was applied here either. For our main entrees, I ordered the 16 oz. New York strip and my wife ordered the marinated hangar steak. Both steaks were cooked to our liking but my New York strip and the accompanied red wine demi glaze were under seasoned and the steak itself was heavily buttered. My wife's steak came paired with a side of yucca fries which are more South American than Mexican. The yucca fries were served cold, but her steak was decently flavored. We also shared a truffle mac n cheese that was hot and crispy after arriving at the table, but I tasted zero truffle flavor in the dish. Also noted, this is not Mexican inspired either. For desert we shared an order of Churros. This does not appear on the regular menu but was offered as a special. Finally, something Mexican inspired and quite fantastic. Please add the churros as a permanent staple on your desert menu. Understandably, this is a new restaurant which still has some kinks to work out. Toca Vez is also pricey so I'm going to be a bit over critical in my critique because this isn't the type of establishment you would visit on a routine basis. I would come back again, especially after the staff and kitchen have time to organize and perfect the menu. If you are in search of a steakhouse that's not the Capital Grill and local, then come give this place a try. Just don't expect to be taken to Mexico. read more

I so wanted to like this place and give it 5 stars but our experience was just average. I was wining a client and he chose here. The idea of a steakhouse with a Mexican flare was intriguing. Valet parking only when you arrive due to a small parking lot. Notice the very expensive cars in the lot up front. Once you walk in the place is a bit more on the dark side. Bar isn't too big but it's very modern. Make sure you have a reservation, even during the week, because it's busy. On weekends they will turn you away. Once seated we were greeted by a friendly server. They work in team. The kitchen is an open concept and fully staffed. Their prices are really on the expensive side. They bring complementary chips and salsa (upscale). We ordered two apps - thick cut bacon which was pretty much all fat (17.50) and garlic shrimp ($19) which were 6 small shrimp in a decent garlic sauce. For our entree's - we split the 38oz tomahawk ($152) which we were disappointed in. Reason being, and I do like some fat on my steak, it was very fatty. We also ordered the enchilada's (29.50)but didn't really have any since we were planning on taking them home. Sides we had fries and creamed spinach (11.50 each). Luckily it was being expensed so split a bottle of wine ($152) and had some dessert. We both left quite disappointed. If I had to pay on my own dime I would have been super unhappy. Not someplace we would go back to. A shame since we wanted to like it. read more

Amazing dinner experience at Toca Vez! I absolutely love the vibe here though it goes get a bit loud. Started out the night with a delicious margarita and some yummy apps: Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, Grilled Octopus and Shrimp Tacos. The steak here is on point, I highly recommend it if you are into that. I had the Enchilada of the Day (which was chicken that day). I wasn't too sure about ordering Enchiladas for a higher-end spot like this but they did not disappoint. In fact, all of my tablemates tried some of my dish and agreed it was their favorite. Just think of them as elevated enchiladas! Our waitresses were super sweet and our food was all amazing. I could not have been more disappointed in this restaurant. We were so excited to go...I ordered the NY Strip, medium rare, which by the way costs over $61. I have been to MANY high end steak houses, including Capital Grille, Ted's Montana Grill, Del Frisco's, Ruth's Chris, etc., and I have never paid this much. I also have never been served such a terrible, subpar steak. First of all, after a few bites, I realized it was overcooked. It was at best medium, which could have been because it kept cooking on the lava hot plate it was served on. (That was another thing--the plate was so hot you could easily have burned your hand.) My first instinct was to send it back, but (a) we were with another couple celebrating an occasion, and (b) the waitress never reappeared to ask if everything was OK. But as I was eating it, I noticed that it was actually chewy and tough. I cannot say the last time--if ever--I have had a steak of such poor quality. I could not finish it. I could easily go to the stop and shop and get a NY strip on sale for $10 and get a better cut of meat than the one I was served at Toca Vez. Speaking of the waitress...in the beginning, she was extremely attentive--so much so that she made all of us a bit uncomfortable. But by mealtime she disappeared and we hardly saw her again. It was so bad that we had to ask the owner for our check. So, in short, I'd say save your money and go elsewhere. read more

This is a "must try" place for great food, service and atmosphere, my only beef is that I would like to see a more realistic wine list and prices. For example a good bottle of Pinot Noir called Mark West retails for around $15 should be on the menu for $30 and you will be very happy. Surprisingly nice atmosphere for a place in the middle of nowhere! First impression was... why do they have valet only for a place like this with tones of spaces to park on your own. The service was good and the food was decent but everything had way too much sauce on it and very sweet. From the drinks to the tuna appetizer and calamari. Our main meals were also covered in sauce. They try to be fancy but destroyed the main course covering it with unnecessary sweet sauces. Doubtful I would return but a good place for suburb people that don't get out much. read more

Meh. We were seated on the second floor. The restaurant and bar were lively and had a good energy. The food was very good, if not excellent. We had the Seared Tuna, Shrimp Tacos, NY Strip Steak and Striped Bass. The striped bass could have been seasoned a little better, but overall, the food did not disappoint. The service was a bit choppy and not what one would expect for ~$150 per person for dinner and drinks. Our server was attentive, but disappeared at times. We waited far too long to order drinks and to long again for our second round and between our appetizers and entree. We noticed that the servers spent too much time at a service counter, most likely to enter the orders into the restaurant's computer system. It definitely had a negative impact on service (note to management: take feedback from your staff...it looks like your computer system is costing you money - there has to be a more efficient way. Maybe have the servers enter the food orders on IPads at the tables...your customers will order more and you will turn tables faster). We will return to give Toca Vez another chance. read more

Went to Toca Vez with 3 other couples. The place is nice but loud. Hard to hear anyone talking which is a bit of a drag. They have an extensive selection of bourbons and other spirits. Point of irritation made us settle bar tab before being seated. Why can't you just put it on our dinner tab? Servers are nice but service is spotty. My octopus appetizer took forever and if we don't remind the waitress it would never have come. That being said the octopus was good although I could not detect grilling. The table was too small for eight people so when entrees and sides came the servers were trying to get rid of water glasses. Sorry seat us at a bigger table. Prices are high but food was good. My only complaint was that the steak was not served medium rare like I asked. Maybe due to the thermonuclear plate it was delivered on which kept it cooking. I ate it but a steak should be delivered as ordered. Valet parking required which is ok by me. I would give this another try as the quality of the food was good but service needs to be improved and please do t squeeze 8 into a 6. read more

Toca Vez exceeded my expectations with food and service and ambiance. First the food ...... I loved the texture of the guacamole, smooth like cream cheese and as I ran out of chips to dip, the waiter came back with more chips for me to dip within seconds. It's almost as if he was reading my mind. As I was thinking to myself will I get charged for more chips ( no) and how long it would take the waiter to bring me a second helping of chips, they arrived serendipitously. I tried the colossal shrimp which were seasoned perfectly and were almost the size of a small lobster tail. They were cooked perfectly. I ordered two more extra at $9 a piece but sometimes you get what you pay for, and I most certainly did. I tried the braised short rib tacos which were also very good. It was the perfect combination of meat and shell. ( soft) Even though I don't drink alcohol much, I noticed the wine list and beverage menu was very extensive. I also noticed how colorful and nicely put together the beverage menu was set up. Next time I go I'll try a sangria but wasn't in the mood so I had a regular cola which came from the tap and was the right concentrate of sugar to water. I'm very picky about my sodas. I also liked when we asked for tap water it came in a nice bottle and the wait staff was more than happy to keep refilling my water glass as if it was a $20 glass of tequila. Lastly I will say it was so nice to see Afrim Berisha back at his old stomping grounds where the Vine used to be. I thought he and Tony did a great job with the Vine and was my mothers favorite restaurant. When I saw Afrim that night circling around the restaurant to make sure everyone was being well taken care of it made me feel like I was home again. When he came by to say hello, I shook his hand and said " everything is great.!" When he asked me how my golf game was I replied, like I said "the food is great " The atmosphere was very cool and different with beautiful paintings and chandeliers and I loved the bar set up. I like getting there around 530 to get a seat at the bar because it does fill up quick. One last thing, the tables are well spaced out so you don't feel crammed in and claustrophobic, rather open and airy.
