A friend was raving about Plaza so we decided to try it one Friday night in January. There is seating and space is casual and colorful. We were able to grab a table and placed our appy orders. Unfortunately it took about 30 min. Looked like a small staff and everyone was hustling to do their best. Dinners came out and they checked up on us a few times. Was taking a while though to get check so I went to the counter myself. Aside from the wait, the staff was great and food was tasty. It's a great spot for Mexican. There's some street parking. When I was craving a burrito, this restaurant was the best choice. They have good quality dishes and a fun atmosphere.

Update: I ordered carnitas online for delivery and got a call from the restaurant asking what sauce I wanted on my enchiladas. I corrected the person and said I ordered carnitas. He said, "Oh, right!" Still, he asked what kind of sauce I wanted. I told him I didn't know carnitas had a sauce on them and asked him if I could have it on the side. He said it comes on the meal, not on the side. I chose salsa verde, thinking that might be interesting. The order was delivered promptly, but I got enchiladas verde with raw red onions and lettuce on top. That phone conversation apparently meant nothing. We really liked Plaza Tikal for authentic Mexican food. We shared Birria Tacos and 3 Pastor ( Pork w pineapple tacos) ( forgot to take a pic of those)and a been and cheese Pupusa. The consume for the Birria tacos was very flavorful with pieces of beef. The pico served with the tortilla chips (brought to table right away) was yummy. We asked for more with our Tacos. BYOB. We picked up take out the other day and received guacamole. Wow! It was fantastic, so fresh. We eat a lot of guacamole at home and it doesn't even come close to the taste of Julio's. Small place in town with very good Mexican food. I would give 4 stars for food but service was not good. We needed to ask a few times for extra chips, water etc. There was only one other table in the restaurant so not sure why. Maybe take out is busy? But they should be a little more attentive to patrons in the restaurant. Otherwise food was delicious and large portions. The guacamole was delicious and very fresh. This is my go-to Mexican spot. Authentic, delicious, great decor and atmosphere. The staff is so lovely and the food is fresh. What a hidden gem in Bernardsville! I love that it's BYOB. It's a great spot to come with friends and family- I love showing people this place! I'm a vegetarian and they have plenty of options for me. They even serve pupusas which are hard to find in NJ. The food is consistent when I order out from here and when I sit down to eat here. My food was still steaming hot when it was delivered to my house the other day. I've eaten lots of Mexican food in Mexico and Southern California and can confidently say this may be the best Mexican food I've ever had. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Plaza Tikal! I never dined in but I always take out since it is located close to my job. They have a small lot next to Plaza where you can park to either dine in or to just run in and pick up your food. The restaurant is super fast with the food it is usually done before I get there in 15 minutes to pick it up! Now let me tell you, the vegetable burrito is generously portioned with sour cream and guacamole on the side. The outside is crisp and the cheese on the inside is melted to perfection. My burrito only runs me about $11 and it gets me satisfyingly full every time. Definitely recommend Plaza Tikal for some authentic Mexican food! read more

30 mins before closing, we called & ordered the burrito family meal. Such delightful service & delicious, fresh burritos were prepared very quickly. The family meal also came with a half pint fresh sour cream & amazingly creamy guacamole. If taco sauce was offered, it would have added a nice flavor; we used our own. To start, when we were ordering, the server forgot to ask a member of our party what they wanted to eat. Their menu also had more American food items than Mexican. Once we got our food, one of our tacos had avocados and the member of the party was deathly allergic to them. They then said that they would make us another taco but would have to charge us for the tacos that no one wanted. The food was ok and my food tasted like something I've bought in the freezer section of the grocery store. The waiter also did not speak enough English to get our orders right. The atmosphere was like I was eating in my grandma's house(in a bad way). The restaurant was tucked away in an alley with barely any parking and I think it is a good reason. We were the only people in there and the service was still long. If you want mexican food please go to casa maya. SO MUCH BETTER! read more

This review is ONLY based on service. The food looks like it could be pretty decent based on the pictures but unfortunately we never got to try it. Went on a Tuesday night. We were the the only ones in the restaurant. 2 other couples came in after we did. We placed our order quickly but that's where it went down hill. It took 25 minutes to bring us our waters. After that we waited another 50 minutes and still no food and no server in sight. So after an hour and 15 minutes since we placed our order we just walked out. The couple sitting next to us walked out a few minutes before we did and the 3rd group went to the front counter to complain a few minutes before that, so no one was happy and no one was served any food. I am not sure if they were short staffed due to Covid which I can certainly understand. My problem is there were only 3 tables in the whole restaurant occupied and the server didn't come check on any of the tables at all for almost an hour. For an almost empty restaurant there is no excuse for not at least taking 10 seconds to check on your only customers. I really hate to leave a 1 star review but this was a pretty terrible experience. I just hope the owners see this and make some changes so they don't loose anymore business. read more

Fantastic Mexican food at reasonable prices. The guac is delicious. So are the burritos and quesadillas. I've only eaten inside the restaurant once and it's very casual but has upbeat fun music on. Can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a Mexican place. Everything from the food to the service was subpar. The three tacos are all very plain tasting and dry. The beef that is in the burrito is plain and the burrito itself was dry as well. No extra seasoning to make it seem unique, and beef was was basically cut up pieces of meat that seemed like pieces of rubber. The flour tasted very plain as well. The nachos faced a similar disappointing fate, cheese and meat and only on the top layer. The service was also very disappointing, we waited ten minutes for our check as we watched our waitress (who was also a hostess) walk passed us multiple times to go clean up a table. On a quiet Friday at noon our simple orders took 30 min to appear, that's just too long. Free chips arrive first in the Mexican flag colors green, red and (almost) white. The Plaza Tikal salsa was generous but forgettable, very mild. A pupusa for $3 makes a yummy appetizer, basically a savory pancake stuffed with cheese, comes with a nice side of cabbage and red dipping sauce. I tried al pastor tacos, three for $10, good balance of meat and sliced radish, great cilantro sauce on the side, double corn tortilla supporting the whole pile of goodness, yummy. My buddies got the burrito and the quesadilla. Burrito was a huge portion of rice, beans and animal protein for $12, generous with the guacamole also. Quesadilla had been nicely browned, also lots of guac. Vegetarian rating: 2 stars, The pupusas are a good choice and you can get a vegetable burrito, but most of the dishes are chicken and beef. It's worth finding this brightly colored new place in its niche on Quimby Street, but BYO and leave yourself plenty of time. read more

Just tried this new Mexican restaurant in town. I am so glad they opened. Bernardsville has a lot of high-end restaurants, but we REALLY needed another casual place to eat. Our food was very good. I had a chicken burrito, which was delicious and (thankfully) not one of those massive ones they serve at Chipotle. My wife had a chicken fajita, which was also delicious. The wait staff was very friendly, but it was a bit chaotic as they just opened and are working out the kinks. The only complaint was that their chips are not the best quality. I think they are out of a bag, whereas other Mexican restaurant make them fresh. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious my meal was here. It was not filled early Saturday evening but it started filling up as the evening progressed. And I noticed take out orders leaving consistently. We parked on the main Street nearby but there might be lot parking to the side of this place, I couldn't tell if it belonged to the restaurant. They provide chips and salsa at the table. The chips are fine. The salsa isn't special, but the diced onion in it is great. Definitely try the nachos! We all loved the beef nachos. Perfect amount of chips, cheese, and the meat was in diced chunks and flavorful. The jalapeños weren't spicy. It was great. I'm picky about burritos, and while this wasn't the best burrito I've ever had, I would definitely order the carne asada again! The rice, refried beans, and cheese were gooey and soft. The steak had a lot of flavor with spice and char. And they sear the outside of the burrito and serve it with lettuce, guac, and sour cream. I was so stuffed. The kids burrito was the same size as the adult burrito and equally delicious. My spouse's beef chili relleno was gooey and tasty. He raved about it.
