I've been coming to Folklore for years and love this place. My mom and I are not vegetarian, but don't eat a lot of meat, and the mushroom and spinach tacos/burrito...amazing! The food is always fresh and delicious. If you haven't been here before I recomend taking the time to read through the whole menu because there are a good amount of options and some appear very similar upon quick glance. I ordered online and waited in my car for 37mins for takeout. When I walked in the woman behind the counter couldn't find my order, until I showed it to her on my phone. She said it'll be ready in 5mins and I knew she was not telling me the truth. I stood there for another 30mins until she finally called my name. Quietly I suggested it might be helpful if she just tell the truth when they are running behind. She started giving me attitude so I grabbed my food and left. The manager of the store would not give us a refund or coupon for future orders. Since we did not hire the delivery service thru DoorDash, they would not refund. (My review is based on a single online order which I picked up) I'm honestly appalled to see 3.5 stars on yelp. Considering I just had some of the best tacos in my life, I genuinely cannot fathom any negative reviews though I digress, to each his own. Firstly I ordered the special cheese chipotle chicken tacos. All the sauces are on the side which is exceptional as I like a small amount on each taco and I can do exactly that to a T. The chicken was well seasoned and very juicy, tortillas well made and hold up well. I really have nothing bad to say, exceptional service and the location is perfect. The store is on the smaller side but there are several seats to eat in and it definitely has a welcoming, friendly vibe. Can't even argue with the price, 4 delicious specialty cheese tacos, ready on time for less than $20..can't beat it and I surely will be back for more. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a taco that speaks to the soul ! read more

Wow! I want to come back all the time! Folklore is an incredible bang for your buck, we had a great time in such a cute place. The atmosphere is adorable, I never would have expected to find this in a hole in the wall. We got 4 for $14 each. We were able to mix and match on the menu, all of which were fantastic! I want to try them all next time. I always need to try the al pastor, which was delicious, and less pineapple than usual (which I prefer). The chipotle chicken was good, but the bbq short rib was to die for! My only critique is that they only offer one kind of salsa (the verde, which I found very addicting but my partner prefers having a hot or kind of variety) and I had a gritty piece in one of my tacos that kept me from finishing my plate - alrhough the flavor was incredible. read more

Just got home after trying this place for the first time. We had high hopes for a great new taco place in Chatham. To say it was disappointing is a serious understatement. First of all, we called a bit earlier just to confirm that they were opened, and their hours. We did this because we knew they had closed early many times before. So they told us they were open until 7:30PM, even though their own website says they are open until 8:00PM every day. This is from their website: We're open Everyday 11am - 8pm We were given menus and a while later when she came to take our orders, she said they are backed up with takeout orders and our food would be out in about 1/2 hour. Why weren't we told that before we spent time deciding what we wanted? Anyway, it was cold out, and we didn't feel like going somewhere else, so we waited...and waited. They could have at least offered free chips and salsa while we waited, but instead they offered to sell them to us. We ordered the carnitas nachos. I have had lots of nachos over the years, and this, sadly, was at the very bottom of the list. It was cold, with something very, very salty. It wasn't the cheese - we don't know what it was. There were huge chunks of fat, and lots of flavorless black beans. It tasted like they opened a can, rinsed the beans, and tossed them in. We also ordered the mulas tacos. Two carnita and two pastor. They certainly didn't look like the pictures. We realized when we were almost done that the chipotle cream was missing. With one taco left, she brought it out. I tasted it before I put it on my taco. It was a container of cream with some spice. No sense of chipotle at all - none of the smokiness or flavor - just heat. It was the same with the green sauce that came out earlier. No flavor - just heat. The pastor was an off-putting orange color. On my last taco, I also found a hair. Longer and reddish-blond. Definitely NOT mine. There are other great Mexican places around - a short drive to Parsippany will pay off a thousand times over in food quality, authenticity and service. We won't be back. Ugh. read more

We decided to try this place around 7PM on a sunny Tuesday. I am just realizing now that it was Taco Tuesday! The pastor tacos were so very good and the portion was very generous. The order came with 4 fully loaded tacos for only $13. What a deal! I was full after 2 but couldn't stop eating and was completely stuffed after 4. Totally worth the over indulgence. The ingredients were fresh and the tortillas were perfectly warmed. We dined outside and watched the sunset in the parking lot. It was the perfect night for some casual dining and the service was friendly and fast. I also want to add that food delivery drivers were running in and out of this place constantly the entire time that we were there, this place is available on all of the food delivery apps and is evidently very popular. Great spot for authentic and tasty tacos....... Mostly delivered by Doordash these days, but we stopped in in person to pick up our order. The nicest people working there and delicious and inexpensive tacos. Of course, it would be better to eat them fresh to order (tacos don't travel well), so eat them in your car if you want super fresh! ;) I hesitated ordering fish tacos, since I knew they were tilapia, but they were so good...with cabbage slaw and a delicious cilantro green sauce to pour on top. The carne asada were great, as were the chicken tacos w/ onions and cilantro. We opted for corn tortillas, but you can choose flour if you like. $12. for 4 fresh and delicious tacos, you can't go wrong......their guac was decent too. It's not often I agree with Chris L but my family and I were very disappointed with the quality of meats ordered from here. I really didn't want to post a "bad review" during this time but I gave them a second chance - which turned out to be little consolation. Their meats are very dry. To a point where they are inedible. I really wanted to like them and give them a shot but I just couldn't. They offer a lot of different meats and options - I am in no way a business owner but maybe master a few items as opposed to offering a bunch of different ones. Three stars is very generous. Being a vegetarian I don't always get great options at taco places . They had yummy mushroom, veggie , cactus and hibiscus flower tacos .. yumm fillings and good sauces . They gave me 2 types of tacos for a plate for 4 because I wanted to taste it all . They also made a veggie burrito bowl for us even though it isn't on the menu . This is our new favorite taco shop for take out meals. Every filling combination we have tried has been a homerun of flavor. The BBQ Short Rib Tacos are our favorite, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The Elote is also something special! "Folklore Artisanal Tacos" actually started in Mexico which is where the mother restaurant is located today. This is a family owned venture & we are very proud of them for their success. This was a fine tasting experience as we got to taste some of their many different artisanal tacos. The place is casual & comfortable, it's not a place where you have to be all serious. It's a cool place where you can have a good time. In addition, we got to try burritos, quesadillas, nachos, a burrito bowl, elote, churros, & Horchata! Everything that we got to try was absolutely fantastic. There are so many Mexican inspired places in New Jersey but how many are actually authentic? The quality of the food was incredibly fresh, everything felt like it was coming out of someone's home kitchen. Some of the most tender & juicy meat you could ever hope for. Options of protein include grasshopper, fish, chorizo, chicken, steak, short ribs, & pulled pork just to name a few, plus there are meatless options too. Some of their items are pre-cooked & ready to go. Also, sometimes the restaurant gets really busy & cannot cater to the masses, so it's only natural as they close earlier than usual. Give them a break! The people that work here are good people & put their heart into producing the food. It was hard to decide on a favorite as we just loved everything. The choices of protein are incredibly fun & festive plus true to the Mexican culture. In addition, the decor is very fun with many Mexican inspired pieces plus original paintings from the father of the family. "Folklore Artisanal Tacos" is a great place for family & friends. One of my most favorite local taco spots has opened a second location in Chatham! A son, mom and dad from Teziutlan, Puebla Mexico opened up Folklore in West Orange some time ago. Very rustique hidden gem kind of spot. The new location is much more modern and feels cozy inside. A little roomier too, with tables outside if it's warm enough. Parking - there is plenty as it is located in a big strip mall. On the Western side. Keep walking and look for signs, you may miss it! Chips and guac - do it! I love their creamy soft guac. Goes perfectly with all the tacos + chips. Tacos - are legit. Each one on the menu represents a different Mexican state's specialty taco. Certain special sauces are prepared and served so these tacos are as authentic as you can find locally. Among the tacos you can select from Hibiscus Flower, Al Pastor (v popular), BBQ Short Ribs + Nopal. Cochintas Pibil come with an excellent pickled habaneros and red onions. Def try it! We also tried to cricket tacos. How about those for a little taco shop in Chatham NJ?! They were crunchy and tasted like Fritos. Mesquite BBQ Fritos with notes of raisins. Churros - you need these in your life. Fried to order, coated in cinnamon sugar, served with 2 chocolate and Carmel dipping sauces. Highly recommend finishing off the meal with these no matter how full you are. Overall, if you live in the area and want to chow down on some tacos come here! Start with chips & green salsa for $4.50. Bring your own cerveza. Elote is corn on the cob with sauce and powdery cheese, good but overcooked, $4. I tried tacos with carnitas (unfortunately dry shreds of pork) and pork short ribs (very good). Steak filling was just plain tough, rescued only by guac and sour cream. The menu says four tacos per serving but we received five, thanks! Vegetarian rating: 4 stars for the cactus, veggie, mushroom & spinach, and hibiscus flower fillings. Small place, about 8 tables plus 6 seats at the bar. Comfortable to sit for a while! Only one waitress and service was uneven. The churros were excellent, piping hot crispy on the outside & served with Nutella. Yummy. Sign in the window says, last order at 7:15, closed at 7:30. I know we're out in the country but this seems crazy early to close a sit-down restaurant. Maybe Folklore should reduce the number of fillings so they have time to make a few good ones. we have tried to eat there a few times on Mondays but they're closed. We're excited to give them a try today. We are from out of town but my mother lives close by we walked in. We weren't even seated we had to grab a highchair and seed ourselves. We had a few questions about the menu, and the waitress was nasty didn't wanna answer our questions, and when we ordered in the middle of ordering drinks, she walked away and refused to acknowledge what my son wanted. I will never ever go back there, and I highly recommend that they find new service the worst service ever been that was in this area. read more

Interesting concept and a lot of potential but definitely room for improvement. The flavors are quite good and their menu is very enticing. Agree with other reviewers that their meats are on the dry side. It's a little hard to do your research on this place because their website is outdated and some of the pages are not functional. They had a sign inside that alerted customers to a recent price increase - if I remember correctly, it was $2 across every item. I got the short rib tacos and the churros with nutella and both were $2 more than what was listed on the menu. Prices were still reasonable, however, the pictures on yelp show 4 tacos and the menu also stated 4 per order but I only had 3 in my order. The salsa and guac were pretty good but the portion they gave was extremely small. The lime complimented the tacos well. Overall, the flavors were good, the meat was dry (but very lean so maybe there's an upside to that) and the mini churros were quite tasty. Sad to say, this isn't a good addition to the Chatham restaurant scene. A massive letdown from the minute I walked in to order. The menu has too much on it, the food was a D- at best, and it is overpriced. They should go visit Tacoria in Morristown to learn how modern day Mexican food is done right. To be clear on the food, we ordered tacos, a burrito, and nachos. I couldn't identify what the orange squares were in the Tacos, but assumed they were pork. Maybe Spam. Not sure. The burrito was Taco Bell worthy. The nacho. Oh the nachos. When was the last time you ordered nachos and ate 5% of the content. Not because it was a big plate of nachos. It was because they were completely tasteless and seemed like the beans were cold rinsed out of the can and dumped on the pile, half the content of the dish was chopped tomatoes, and there was almost no carnitas in the tiny to-go bowl. I've grown up in Chatham/Madison and I would say that the food options are well..... bland and boring. HOWEVER Folklore Taco is an exception. We had a carne quesadilla, it was so flavorful yet authentic as well as the short rib cheese tacos. The tacos were so delicious and flavorful. Not greasy or overdone. Served with guacamole and salsa verde. Both so refreshing to the meat taco. I can not wait to go back and eat our way through the menu. Seriously check them out, you won't be sorry!
