Got two different tacos here. It was average at best. I think 5 bucks for a small taco wasn't worth the price but I did enjoy the experience. I placed my order up front at the register. I ended up getting an al pastor taco since they had it on rotation grill up front with slices of pineapple. I did like how when they gave me the pastor taco, they had both the pineapple and al pastor. The portobello mushroom taco was very very disappointing in my opinion. The mushrooms tasted rubbery. I got the taco de ribeye and it was ok. The meat was a little fatty and the taco wasn't very filling. The bowl was better. The chicken tasted fresh and it was made exactly like I requested. The Mexican rice was unlike most I have had but it complemented the rest of the bowl well. I did find it surprising that my order online was $10 more than the order I placed over the phone. Having just returned from vacation in Los Angeles, we were on the hunt for good authentic Mexican street style tacos. After trying several very highly rated places in North Jersey that were all subpar, we were excited to try Central Taqueria especially after reading about the owner's Mexican background and his passion for food, and their handmade corn tortillas. Even though their menu prices are quite a bit higher than what I paid on the west coast ($5 for an al pastor taco and $6.75 for a ribeye taco vs. $3-4 in SoCal), I wasn't deterred because I know that downtown Morristown is not an easy or inexpensive place to set up shop. We had a strong start after being warmly greeted by the woman at the register (Yuri A, according to the receipt) and seeing the fresh trompo of al pastor and pineapple roasting, but things quickly went downhill from there after ordering for my party of 3 to dine-in. Even though we were only one of four tables dining in at that time, we experienced one service issue after another. First, the woman asked us if she had brought us our drinks even though she had just brought them to our table a minute ago and they were on the table right in front of us. Then, she brought us several plates of food that we thought were ours, but were actually intended for another group. She returned several minutes later, asked us whether we touched the food (we had not), and took the plates away and brought them to another table. I can only imagine what a nightmare this place would be when it's busy. When our order arrived, the al pastor was very dry and grainy. The underlying flavor was excellent, but unfortunately, this restaurant doesn't have high enough turnover to keep the pork juicy. The trompo just spins and cooks and cooks continuously on low to medium heat while very few customers come in to order. I don't know what the solution is, but I recently had al pastor tacos at a gas station taqueria in Texas during off-peak hours when I was the only one in the shop and they were juicy and delicious. The other items in our order, the ribeye tacos, birria tacos, and nopales tacos were satisfactory. The handmade corn tortillas were definitely a step up from processed store-bought tortillas. The multiple salsas of varying spiciness levels were all excellent and came in individual squeeze bottles rather than being left in pans out in the open as I've seen at other places. The various agua frescas were fantastic -- I would love to know how they're made (the menu doesn't specify whether they were made from scratch or from instant powder). Clean restaurant, friendly staff and the owner greeted customers!! I think their tacos are probably bomb but the burritos were small for the price and didn't include beans, not much meat and mostly rice. If I was in the area again I would definitely try the fresh grilled tacos. read more

The place isn't super big but they have enough stool seating. The portions are good enough to get you comfortably full and the prices are reasonable ($15 for two birria tacos with cheese and consome, and $4.25 for one taco). The consome was a bit cold which has happened before unfortunately but it still tastes great. The people there are always super nice so can't complain about that but this time we did have the girl at the front forget about serving our Esquite and we were waiting for an extra 20 minutes for it which was disappointing, we had to ask about it and it came out cold on top of it. We asked for a refund and were given it so props to them for making it right. We'll give them another chance soon. read more

Staff was super helpful and offered great recommendations. The flavors are off the charts and the food comes out before you can even sit down at a table. I ordered the 3-taco pastor and was overall satisfied. The combination of onion, pineapple, and seasoned pork worked well together. I also added the guacamole for $2 extra, which comes in two small containers (more than enough for 3 tacos). The pork was not too fatty (a good thing) and tasted a little sweet (maybe cinnamon-y too?). The order was ready when I got there and the service was friendly. Has gone way downhill. Door Dash delivery. No text alerts had to go on website to know what was happening. Food was below room temp and tin dishes make it very har to microwave! Cold Taco had mushy meat completely blah taste. And this was the best item! Guacamole was super spicy could not taste anything but pepper. Burned my throat. Inedible. Chips were semi stale- way better available in bag at a supermarket. Main dish was (small portion ) of very chewy meat with no flavor. Veggie were in such encompassing grease that they were not edible. Taco shells (paid for upgrade) were salty and as chewy as gum. Some of the worst food I have ever had. Can get MUCH better frozen dishes. Sad. Used to be quite tasty. read more

The rib eye burrito I got wasn't the best I'd give it 6/10. the steak was seasoned well but it was in large chunks and wasn't ideal for a burrito. The service was friendly but slow and our appetizer was supposed to take an extra 5 minutes to come out but they forgot about it and when we reminded them they made it quickly but it was cold and tasted terrible. I had to return the app because it was so bad but they gave a refund immediately and apologized. My chicken taco was well seasoned and well balanced with fresh cilantro, my veggie taco entered the chat with sautéed, juicy peppers, the house hot sauce (in bottles on the counter) was nice, and the tortillas were delicious. I liked the a la carte ordering, too, since it allowed portion control. My brother set himself up with a cochinita torta, which I sampled. Stopped by for a quick lunch at this unassuming taco place and we ended up with two types of tacos. The al pastor tacos had great flavor and the pineapple complimented it really well. Great, authentic tacos in the Morristown area. Would recommend! Having lived on the Mexican border for several years, I have been trying to find authentic Mexican food in the tri-state area for a while. This place has been one of the closest and best I've had in a while. I ordered to go. I got the Al pastor and nopales (cactus) tacos and they were great! HUGE compliments to the incredibly attentive service! From the minute I walked in, who I assumed was the Manager was helpful and not in an overbearing way. He was so nice! Got the nopal taco, the cochinita taco, and the al pastor taco. The nopal had good texture & crunch. The cochinita was probably my least favorite. Still good, but not as good as the other two. And the al pastor was THE BEST!! Good flavor on all, especially with the recommended hot sauce which wasn't that hot at all but added something a little extra. If the Yelp review didn't point me to al pastor, then the giant "al pastor machine" with pineapple on top would have. My other taco was cochinita pibil. They're fine on their own and no sauce is needed, but I did sample the two excellent hot sauces and even enjoyed the mild one. Fast and friendly service. read more

To my surprise, this little restaurant serves as a fast casual takeout spot as well as a full serviced restaurant! Service was incredibly helpful and friendly; our waiter happily walked through the entire menu with us. I tried several tacos and loved their signature pastor (marinated pork with pineapple) and cochinita (slow cooked pork with achiote and orange juice). Both where phenomenal with so much flavor! The nopales (cactus) and ribeye, were good, but not as memorable as their signatures. For drinks, their horchata was wonderfully creamy and sweet. I've been lucky enough to eat at Central Taqueria several times and have made my way through a lot of the menu, and I can tell you this place is a great addition to an already tasty stretch of South Street. You can't lose with pastor, cochinita, pollo, or their three vegetarian tacos. Guacamole is great, street corn (esquites) is delicious. Horchata (which is way too rare around here) is rice/creamy/cinnamony deliciousness. Not sure about the milk, Chris; most horchata skips the milk entirely and relies on the rice. One of my pics is of birria tacos with cheese; I'd skip the cheese next time because the brisket is so rich and unctuous, the cheese isn't at all necessary. Three birria tacos without the cheese is the same price FYI. The service has always been friendly and fast. Seating is limited as some people have said, but that's not a problem. Come in, get a couple of tacos and get out. Enjoy the eclectic Mexican music while you're here, but it's not a lingering place and they don't serve lingering food. Their menu has plenty to choose from and even includes vegetarian items that can be made vegan. My boyfriend and I ordered the pastor, cochinita, and pollo. We ordered 4 kinds of tacos: pastor, pollo, veggie, and the house specialty, cochinita. Results were mixed. Both pork tacos were delicious, well seasoned, well balanced with toppings. The veggie taco was too greasy for my liking. The chicken, although fine, was a bit dry and tasteless. Kind of boring. Staff was incredibly friendly, giving us a guac sampler. Also, very quick. The food is authentic and there is a good range of vegetarian choices. I also liked the choice of spices and which vegetables are used in the taco. I also had the bean soup. The portions are not as large as you might get in a less expensive town, but the staff was very helpful and attentive. Short review: Best and most authentic flavor of real Mexican food that I've had in NJ. Definitely worth a visit for what it's like to be in a Mexican taqueria. Long Review: Came here on a rainy Sunday just after opening and were approached by a friendly employee. Upon seeing a real trompo - or the spit that roasts meat and pineapple for el pastor tacos - I knew I had to try some. The rest of our large group placed our order and then the kitchen sprang to life. As a gringo who has spent time in Mexico, the scene reminded me of what it's like to be in a taqueria in Mexico. The open kitchen, the sounds and smells of the grill and the trompo. The taquero - that is the taco master - taking his place in the kitchen and expertly and efficiently preparing food. The menu is not pages long, because the meat is the real star. The tortillas and bread for the tortas are just right - exactly what you might get from a tortillera or a panadería. The food seems simple but the flavors, mixed in with homemade salsas - not the chunky kind you get from a jar at the supermarket - are varied and complex. The food is plated promptly and with care. This restaurant has all of those qualities in spades. And, importantly, as opposed to many watered-down Mexican restaurants here in Jersey, there are no heaping plates of flavorless rice and beans. We ordered 3 tortas, two tacos, a side of esquites, and two kids quesadillas. I appreciated that the server made sure to tell me that the quesadillas are prepared the way they are made in Mexico -- the tortilla is heated on the grill with a pile of cheese and once the cheese melts, the tortilla is folded in half. At that point, I knew that this place was striving for true authenticity. And, just like a Mexican taqueria, we were offered the chance to keep ordering more food until our bellies were full. At this point, the owner kindly welcomed us and we swapped stories with a smile. Later, after we had finished eating and left the restaurant, we felt like we had enjoyed a real cultural experience. A real throwback to our many visits to Mexican taquerias. Overall, this place is a triumph and we hope to return again soon to try the fresh aguas and the slow-cooked cochinita pibil. I had two tacos just to try this place out for the first time. It was the pastor taco and the cochinita. They were both juicy and had amazing flavor. I like the cochinita better because it was juicer. The pastor taco was also great - I loved the pineapple slice on top. Very quick and friendly service. Seating is limited - seems like more of a to go place. I would recommend trying to eat them fresh and in the restaurant. So happy another great food place has come to Morristown.
