The bartender guided us on the drink options and offered suggestions, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the spicy margarita, which was delicious. We then were seated up stairs (the decor and ambiance of this place is beautiful!). They provide complimentary chips and salsa (my fav). The owner came by to apologize for the wait, which really wasn't terrible, and offered us two free tacos on the house. They were delicious! One chicken and one beef. We ordered the toca vez salad and plantain and coconut shrimp sushi (UNREAL!). Both were delicious but the plantain starter was heavenly. I ordered the scallop risotto. Delicious! My husband ordered the salmon and it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cooked to perfection!! Maybe my expectations were a bit too high. I'll give it that. The place is visually very interesting - there's really nothing else like it in the Somerset Hills and looks like it came from a much more metropolitan area. The food was a mixed bag. Shrimp tacos - tender seasoned shrimp served on fresh corn tortillas and a spicy sauce on the side were excellent. The steaks - one medium rare ribeye was surprisingly lean, but tender and flavorful and was beautifully cooked. The filet ordered medium came somewhere between rare and medium rare. But it was tender as expected (it is prime filet after all). Asparagus side was phenomenal. Shoestring fries came out crisp but oddly room temp. Sea bass dish was good, but the menu description failed to adequately describe the ingredients. The steaks were typical upscale steakhouse, but I guess I was hoping for a more Mexican-inspired flare when it came to the sauces or sides. Service was well-coordinated and available and friendly and efficient. The area that was lacking was the knowledge of the food. No one knew what was in the sauce that accompanied the shrimp tacos. It's okay not to know perhaps, but say I don't know and go find out. Came to Toca Vez for Valentine's Day. A friend of the Mrs recommended it & knows the Owner. It's a large two level venue with complimentary valet parking. It has a low light romantic ambiance, & the staff are very friendly and very attentive. The Owner came over and sat and spoke with us and he was an absolute pleasure to meet, such a kind and warmhearted Man. This is a high end type of place, so prepare to spend accordingly, but you definitely get what you pay for. After a year of living in the area, I finally made it to Toca Vez last night, and let me tell you: it was worth the wait! My 3 friends and I shared the short rib empanadas, plantain and coconut shrimp sushi, and the guacamole. Each plate was more delectable than the next. I had a "Cowboy Killer" drink (jalapeño margarita) and it was just the right amount of spicy. For dinner, I had the colossal shrimp risotto which came with some lobster bits. I loved it. My friends had some steak and pork chops and said they came out perfectly as well. For dessert, we shared the skillet cookie. It was to die for. There was a huge lump of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top that balanced out the heat of the cookie. Yum! I definitely recommend going to Toca Vez and can't wait to go back! read more

Inconspicuous restaurant along a local highway but it gets packed in here! They do have mandatory valet parking which was odd since there is plenty of space for cars. Service was friendly and the inside space was large with different rooms. 1. Oysters - Good variety and fresh. 2. Caesar salad - Lots of sauce on this, came with grated parm strips. Overall simple but good. Large dish. 3. Lobster Quesadilla - Very good and loads of flavor here. Lobster was not overpowering. 4. Empanadas - Crunchy, came out hot, good flavor with dipping sauce. 5. Ribeye - Cooked as ordered. Can be salty but very good flavor! 6. Lobster tail - Loads of meat and flavor. Can be a standalone if you don't want red meat. 7. Layered chocolate cake - Good rich chocolate cake. Not too heavy but by the time we reached this, had to take a good portion home. Very good though! 8. This was hands down the worst meal I have ever eaten. Appetizers were salty and way too spicy we had the chips & guac and the tamales. Drinks were mediocre and overpriced. For dinner we had mashed potatoes which were heavy and unflavored and the dry aged cowboy we asked for medium and to have the sliced off the bone as well. When I tell you it was off the bone in 4 hunks with the middle being completely raw with the end pieces beyond burnt they were charred and the bone was burnt an charred on one side. I am telling you burnt like they threw it in a fire. The quality of the steak was also horrible it was like a sirloin which was mind boggling as it was a dry aged cowboy! This place has valet parking. It is dark inside and I saw some older folks using flashlights. The food was phenomenal. We got tuna tostada, chicken enchiladas, and filet mignon bites. The tuna tostada and chicken enchiladas had a very slight spice but nothing you can't handle. The steak was good but parts were chewy but I think it's because of the steak I got. When we arrived we were told our table wasn't ready yet but we could wait at the bar downstairs or upstairs. The downstairs bar was packed so we headed upstairs and was immediately greeted by Chip and taken to a table. The staff here is amazing! Chip immediately made our party feel at home and everyone was extremely accommodating and funny. We started with the thick cut bacon and Caesar salad. Both were great! Chip brought out complimentary chicken and short rib tacos which were excellent! The meat was tender and seasoned well. Highly recommend! To drink I tried the First Bloom followed by the brown butter old fashioned. The First Bloom was delicious and definitely my favorite. The old fashioned felt a bit watered down in my option but still tasty. The drink menu is really cool! Each cocktail is accompanied by a description and a sketch of each drink. As for the mains, we ordered the cowboy ribeye paired with a side of creamed spinach and the truffle mac and cheese. The spinach was perfect! Creamy and cooked well. The mac was well seasoned and cheesy. Didn't really get any truffle tasting notes though. Unfortunately I just wasn't a fan of the steak. Apart from the fact that we had to send my partner's steak back because it was over cooked (he asked for medium rare as the steak would continue to cook on the plate they serve it on which is about 500° F and it came out medium well) the seasoning was overwhelming and took away from the taste. On their menu they note "Each steak at Toca Vez Steakhouse is seasoned with our own proprietary blend of spices & salt and dressed with melted, unsalted butter." It really reminded me of the steak rub you get from the supermarket. The texture and taste of all the spices took away from the experience. I personally like a steak that relies on the pre-salt and basting while cooking vs a season dump after or during cooking. So I can't recommend the steak unfortunately. Dessert was also good and complimentary which we appreciated. I had the crème brûlée cheesecake was wait moist and had a delight it crunch on top. Our first time here - fun vibe ( a little LOUD) but we met a group of friends who suggested meeting here for dinner. We were a Large group but they took good care of us- being attentive and accommodating with any food allergies. When we arrived our table was a bit delayed bc of other patrons but they kept apologizing and were very considerate and brought us some items once we sat down to make up for it. We had an array of apps, drinks, bottles of wine, mixed drinks, entrees, and dessert. The street corn side, creamed spinach side and oh, that apple crumb dessert was especially delicious too. Debatably one of the best steakhouses in Central Jersey. This was my second time dining at Toca Vez and it was just as memorable as the first. What a beautifully designed restaurant. The decor is fun and inviting. The restaurant is clean and cozy. The servers are wonderful. Very attentive and detail oriented. The food is absolutely delicious. They have a wide range of options on their menu from tacos to seafood towers. Our group shared the calamari and queso to start. For mains we shared a couple of their Cowboy cut steaks, the perfect combination of marbleization and tenderness, cooked to a perfect medium temperature. The sides were also very complimenting. This is a high end steakhouse with some Mexican influences. The lobster empanadas were just ok, hardly any lobster in it. Oysters were fresh,delicious and not too briny. I had a nice thick cut Kansas dry aged steak griiled medium. This steak had an excellent dry aged flavor, super juicy and not chewy at all. The sides were excellent. We had haricot vert, truffle Mac, asparagus. For dessert, the chocolate cake and churros were just mediocre. The service was great. I'll be back to try other items on the menu soon. read more

Our only beef was that there's a mandatory valet parking onsite (I drive a stick shift so that "allowed" us to self park since none of the staff knew how to drive one,ha!),though most customers would likely appreciate this perk, and just how dark it is inside once seated at the table...I had to turn on my phone's light to read out of the menu,which is ridiculous,but quite common in many restaurants these days (I get it but I don't...you know what I mean?..). So not only is difficult to read what you'll eat, see what you eat but also really poor lighting to take any quality pictures. It came with sweet potato which was good but a little too sweet with the maple sauce on the pork chop. The scallops were delicious and cooked well but I was disappointed that it did not come with risotto like the menu online. Over $40 for 4 scallops with edamame and corn is a little expensive I think. The food is delicious, however the service is terrible & so is the noise level. We recently dined here for a birthday celebration. Upon being seated, our waitress informed us the kitchen was very busy & we needed to order all our food at once. No problem, we do that anyway. We did not realize that meant we would be rushed out of the restaurant, or we would have left then & there. Within 5 minutes of our appetizers being cleared away, dinner was brought out. No time to digest, converse, nothing. Just back to back plates of food. Our entire meal was over in 46 minutes. Not the birthday celebration we had planned on. On top of that, drinks were terrible & made incorrectly, & it was so loud we couldn't even hear the person right next to us speak. The service at Toca Vez was superb and out of sight!! Food was great! My husband had a delicious filet mignon, and had leftovers which were equally delicious! My choices were truffle macaroni and cheese and vegetable tacos. Wow both choices were fantastic! My husband's dessert was the caramel apple cream cake. It was super delicious. I love the modern design of the restaurant, especially the bar. The ambiance was also very good. Looking at the food, the apps were fairly strong. My family and I shared the short rib tacos which were packed with flavor, the thick cut bacon which was super juicy, and the queso dip which was good but not great. I ordered the short rib as my main which absolutely melts in your mouth and is super tender. The red wine sauce was a bit strong and seemed like it needed to be reduced a tad bit more, but that might just be personal preference. The mashed potatoes that came with it were great. I tried the sea bass and chicken that my family members ordered, both of which were also great. The food was very strong and the service was fast and friendly. I would definitely come back. I highly recommend this restaurant and want to go back to try other items! The chips and salsa were complimentary; the salsa had a slight kick. Such good chips! My weakness! I ordered a classic margarita with LALO tequila which is my new fav tequila. The other drink was called something with Cowboy in the name and it was not good. The ambiance is chic but inviting and the noise level makes conversations easy. We felt pampered the moment we were seated. The staff could not have been more attentive (but not intrusive) particularly Mandy and Dez. They really made us feel special. The food was excellent. We had the garlic shrimp as an appetizer and the Chilean Sea Bass and Short Rib entree's all delicious and perfectly prepared! The Tequila offerings are impressive. I had a simplified margarita with an Organic Tequila that was balanced and refreshing. Fantastic spot. Seems a bit of a weird location as it appears to be right off a country road in Basking Ridge but you don't want to miss trying it out. This place is pretty pricy which is expected for the fine-dining establishments so I wouldn't come for a normal date night or with friends, but is worth it for special occasions. Came here to celebrate my wife's birthday and hoping to visit again soon for another celebration. Parking is Valet only which I probably could have done without, but not a big deal. Beautiful interior, both in the main dining room as well as upstairs. Great experience with the service too - never felt like I had to wait too long for someone to come and they were always good about answering any questions I had. Large selection of drinks. Not as many margarita options as you'd expect for a Mexican spot but they make up for it with plenty of other options. They also have some excellent mocktails for those who prefer alcohol-free. You wouldn't expect it at such a fine-dining place, but the Chips & Guac are highly recommended. It sounds so plain but on top of being extremely fresh, the portion size is huge which matters when you're paying a lot. Pretty much every entree and appetizer we've tried has been excellent, and haven't found anything to not be worth it. Yes it's expensive but you're paying for quality and they deliver there. I only have amazing things to say about my experience here. The service from the start was incredible. Everyone was attentive to every need, and I specifically sat at the bar where the bartenders were lively and amazing with perfect customer service and skillful bartending. I had the 10oz filet with the mashed potatoes. I've been to many steakhouses and I can honestly review this to be the best filet I've had. The seasonings they use are perfect for each cut, the searing on the outside made it crisp but the inside was as tender as butter. My steak was cooked to the textbook version of medium. The grilled octopus was tender, but there was more fried yuca then octopus. NY Strip was served on a 500F plate it was cooked perfectly ! It was lacking any flavor ! The Oscar style crab was succulent & fresh. However the "Béarnaise" was very thin and watery. Salmon w/ Farro. Came here on a Thursday night to celebrate my friend's birthday with a group of 8 ladies. We were greeted by the hostess and seated upstairs where we thought was nice as it's not as noisy and we can have a comfortable conversation without yelling over the background noises. The chairs however were not very comfortable especially for short people like me. We ordered some appetizers to share in which they were ok. Nothing outstanding but edible. I ordered the beef short ribs for my entree. The meat was very good and tender and it fell apart easily without needing a knife. However, the carrots could be cooked 1-2 minutes more as it was still a little hard. The dish was drenched in sauce in which it was a little too overpowering and sweet to my liking. The meal was fine up until the server brought out our cake to the table. My friend had requested this cake from Brooklyn which has to be preordered a week in advance. I had a bad feeling when the server asked if the cake needs to be refrigerated immediately after I told her it needs to be. After she came out with the cake and we sang our birthday song, she asked if she should just cut the cake into 8 pieces. We told her we were too full and would like for her to just cut half of the cake and we would like to take the other half home. When she came back with our cake cut, I felt something was wrong. The cake tasted off and weird as it was mostly cream. They also added more whipped cream and vanilla ice cream on the side which made the cake overly sweet. As soon as we got the remaining of our cake back, I was shocked and horrified to see what they did to it. Instead of cutting the cake vertically in half, they cut our cake horizontally. The sponge cake, cream and mangos are perfectly proportioned in which you should eat all layers together at the same time. Instead, cutting it horizontally left a huge chunk of the sponge cake behind hence it was mostly cream when we ate it. Now there will be mostly sponge cake and little cream and fruits left for the remaining half. The person who did this clearly has no knowledge of food and lacks common sense, which is a little concerning to have someone like this working in the food restaurant industry. I was really upset as they completely ruined our cake. My friend was going to take the half back to enjoy with her family and they now only get to eat the sponge cake with little cream and mangos. We raised our concerns on our way out and thankfully, the manager and chef apologized to us and refunded our cake cutting fees. Overall, the food was underwhelming but expected in the suburb so I had no expectations to begin with. Some staff lack common sense but our main server although was slow but friendly. This is probably a good place to go for a casual dinner since there's not much options around the area but I most likely won't go back unless it's another gathering and someone requested it.
