I had a great experience with Tobias and Battite. Its reasonably priced and the expertise of the staff really shines through. I had a weird hearing issue in my ear that wouldn't go away. I heard a noise that sounded like water rushing through my ear every 20 minutes or so. I wasn't sure if I should go to the doctor or call an audiologist, and I am really glad I called Tobias and Battite. I had actually never done a virtual appointment related to health, but the advice I got from Dr. Fligor was really valuable and put me at ease. He told me not to worry and to continue protecting my hearing with good habits. I followed up and went for an in person appointment, even though my hearing issue went away on its own in about a month. I thought it would be a good thing to check my hearing just to make sure, and I learned my hearing is normal and that the tests would be helpful for the future as a baseline. Having just moved into a building with noisy upstairs neighbors, I went to Tobias & Battite for custom ear plugs to supplement my white noise machine as needed. I was a bit surprised - and concerned! - that at both my initial appointment and the fitting the provider did not wear gloves, but I got my earplugs and was happy with them the first few times I wore them. But in the past few weeks I used them twice and both times the left one did not fully fill my ear. I had the flu, I got busy at work, and it wasn't a very high priority since I don't use them that often so I didn't call about it until today. When I made the appointment for an adjustment, which was supposedly included in the $250 cost, I was told that I only had 30 days (Jan. 6) and so now they want to charge me an additional $150. VERY disappointed!!! First, that's a pretty short window; second, it's not like I've had them for months. I've had them 6 weeks but they did not care. They did not ask if there were extenuating circumstances, didn't take into account illness, holidays, snow days. They basically said too bad, so sad for you. I would hope that a local company, especially one that is healthcare adjacent, would have more concern, better customer service, and more integrity to stand behind their work. read more

Louise, you're awesome!! I was in Boston from California and my Oticon wire went out. I made an appointment for the next day to get it replace at the closest audiologist near my hotel. Fortunately for me it happened to be Tobias. I had asked what the cost would be when I scheduled my appointment, approx $125, and was fine with it. There was no way I was going to spend a week in Boston with only one working hearing aid. I went in, experienced a friendly greeting from the receptionist, and was see by Louise very quickly. She took my hearing aid and returned just a few minutes later, AND with great news. She didn't have to as I'd already accepted the price that was quoted, but Louise, in all her awesomeness, took the time to call Oticon and discover that my hearing aids were still under warranty, which meant the wire was replaced at no cost!!! She saved me over $100. So, because of this I felt a solid review was warranted. I'll most likely never be back in Tobias again, but for anyone else who is looking for a friendly and helpful Audiologist, I obviously recommend them very highly. Thank you Louise. We were on a cruise with very rough seas. Things were flying through the air all night. In the morning, my husband's hearing aids/charger were on the floor. One of the devices broke. Our audiologist from Beaufort, SC (Kalady Audiology) helped to find someone at our next port of call (Boston). Operations Manager, Jana, at Tobias and Battite took us right away, identified and fixed the problem. The entire staff was wonderful. I thank you so much. For any musicians concerned about noise induced hearing loss, I highly, highly recommend consulting with Brian Fligor. He is an expert at making sure musicians' hearing is staying safe and has a passion for helping musicians too! He helped me with an in depth risk assessment about a concert I was concerned about and made sure I was approaching it in a safe way, with exposure time and appropriate hearing protection - I was so grateful for his expertise and extensive thoughtfulness in this area, which you would not find with your average audiologist. (I drove from Vermont to Boston to see him and I was not disappointed, it was worth every penny.) In addition, he also gave me assurance and help in reorienting my attitude toward tinnitus, which I was struggling with. Needless to say, the show went great and my symptoms of NIHL and tinnitus didn't get any worse. Please don't hesitate to consult with Brian if you are a musician and want to make sure you are protecting your ears! read more

Tobias & Battite is a family run business specializing in custom hearing aid systems and repair as well as hearing protection items. I got a pair of custom swimmers plugs for $70. Somehow involving my insurance cartel blasts the price for the exact same blobs of silicone to $300. Nonsense. They also make custom musician's earplugs for $140 that don't flatten or muffle sound just reduce the intensity. After going to a few concerts, it's hard to believe so few artists wear these! You don't want to end up like Ozzy Osborne, do you? Their prices on custom-made products undercut the Internet and all those sketchy do-it-at-home kits. On top of a lower price, you also get local service should anything go wrong. T&B is a niche business, but I recommend anyone in the market for hearing aids and ear protection check this place out. Friendly, professional staff. Good variety of products, though cost is frightening. My big reason for the "one star" is location, location, location. They are located in the elite area of Boston where you are expected to have a personal driver at your disposal. (Check it out on Google maps!). The few 'Public Parking' businesses near them fill up early. There is almost no handicap parking near them either. I don't live near Boston so I can't take the 'T'. I drive a car. Going there is a miserable experience. Be prepared for a long, long walk from a parking garage and hiking over snow banks in winter. My parking fee last time there was $48.00 at the closet private parking garage, about 1/3 mile away. read more

As the first reviewer mentioned, this is a nice, family-owned business where you get personal attention. Last week I called with a simple request: "Please make me as close to deaf as possible." This sounds perverse, I know, but I'm trying to finish my dissertation this semester and some of my neighbors are loud, obnoxious, and generally inconsiderate, so I had to find some way to block them out in order to work. I went in to T&B on Monday (1/28/13) to be fitted for a pair of custom silicone swimmer's plugs. They told me that these were just as effective----if not more----at blocking sound than any type of "musicians' plugs" but would save me money, since they're half the price of musicians' plugs. The original reviewer paid $70 for his back in 2009 and I paid $90 for mine 4 years later, in 2013. Not bad. The price increase over the years is clearly reasonable and not drastic at all. I'm looking forward to picking up my plugs in less than 2 weeks and enjoying the sweet, sweet sound of silence from now on..... read more

Compared to the pathetic service I got when buying my first non-functional hearing aid, Tobias and Battite has been like a breath of fresh air. I ended up with a hearing aid that really works, has many adjustments, and was $400 cheaper than my first one. It also has a 4-year repair policy for no extra charge (a current deal from Oticon). Nicky, the woman who worked with me, is excellent. She knows her business and follows through. I checked "moderate" price as a guess but I haven't done enough comparative shopping to make an accurate assessment. read more
