At 5 years old, I was diagnosed with a mild mid-frequency bi-lateral hearing loss. Since that time, I have been to at least 15 different audiologists and 7 ENTs; going through the dreaded annual hearing evaluations for 25 years. For years, my mother was berated for not putting hearing aids on her child, mostly because I refused to wear them and I was functioning "well enough" in school. As I grew older I went from a mild to moderate hearing loss. Understanding speech became increasingly difficult. I began to realize my ability to "hide" my disability without amplification wasn't "well enough" for the professional world and personal life. That's when I started my journey to find hearing aids. As a young professional living in Boston and working 2 jobs, it was easier to buy a new car than get financing for hearing aids. Insurance doesn't cover it and my company didn't offer a HSA account. Additionally, I made too much money on paper to get government funding. The technology for mid-frequency hearing loss is not quite here yet, but significantly better than 20 years ago. I shopped around from audiologist to hearing aid distributors who all turned me away when I said I could not pay $8k - $10k within 30-days. I was devastated, defeated, and felt no one could help me...until I went to Brookline Hearing Center. The first time I visited, I met Judith Chasin. This was a very emotional situation and sensitive decision for me. She sat down with me to really listen. Judith made me feel comfortable and gave me the reassurance that hearing aids will increase my quality of life. We must have spent 2 hours talking! I have never received this kind of support and attention from an audiologist in 25 years. With a little bit of coaxing, and encouragement, I got molds for Orticon hearing aids. I came back a second visit to find out the molds didn't fit comfortably in my tiny ears but Judy found me an alternative solution that made them fit much more comfortably. I tried them out for a couple weeks, but realized they were not doing enough for me. I came back a second time and met Judy Arick. Again, this visit was over an hour as she mostly listened to my needs. It was suggested to try another brand, Plantronics, and was sent home for another 30-day trial. I returned a third time, ready to give up, convinced the technology doesn't exist for my mid-frequency hearing loss. I remember being in tears and ready to call it quits when both Judy's told me they'll never give up on me and will find me the right amplification - no matter how many times it took! I was fitted for Widex hearing aids, top of the line, with the most advanced technology. They were very expensive, but did work! This process took 3 months, 6 + visits (at least an hour each), and both Judy's gave me emotional support and technical advice. During the 3 trials and many visits, never once was I asked for payment! At the time of purchase, they worked with me to come up with a financial plan to afford my hearing aids. Almost 2 years later from that first visit, my quality of life has significantly increased, more than I could have ever imagined. With the help of Brookline Hearing Center, I was given the confidence to leave my old company and interview for a new job. I not only got the job, but a major promotion with a Fortune 100 company. Also that year, I met the man of my dreams and will be getting married this summer. I can't express my sincere gratitude to Brookline Hearing and their unbelievably kind and helpful staff. Lastly but not least, I thank both Judy Arick and Judy Chasin for helping me achieve my goals. My story is unique and has impacted my life in many ways. My visit for in-ear impressions was a breeze and the specialist who did them for me was great. After doing my right ear once, she noticed it wasn't quite correct due to the interesting shape of my inner ear. So she re-did it promptly for a proper molding. Finally I broke with this office and saw another audiologist! After a couple of recent visits, when the owner/ audiologist seemed very rushed and distracted, and the adjustments to my hearing aids did not give me the promised help, I knew something had to be wrong. Three years ago when I first got the hearing aids, a different audiologist did an excellent job. but then she left and the quality of service and attention diminished drastically. My new audiologist explained that I had top of the line hearing aids but that some of the programming had been left incomplete. My hearing is excellent now! Look further. I have worn hearing aids for 20 years and am a "heavy user"--as a young "working professional", I go to restaurants, meetings, outdoor festivals, concerts, etc. I know exactly what I want in my hearing aids. When I first visited Brookline Hearing, I was just curious about the new waterproof Siemens Aquaris hearing aids, but ultimately did not purchase them, and Brookline Hearing did not charge me at all for the hearing test or appointment time. 8 months later, I lost one of my hearing aids and was in a crisis situation, trying to get it replaced ASAP. I got an appointment at Brookline Hearing within a week and we tried out a new hearing aid while trying to get another unit of my old hearing aids shipped out. This meant more appointment time and calls to Siemens. Happily, the Siemens audiologist was able to find an old unit and ship one out. Judy loaded my old program onto the new unit and I was good to go. Additionally, instead of paying $2600 for a new hearing aid, I only had to pay $500! That includes the hearing aid, 6 month repair warranty, ear mold, and all associated appointment time. Needless to say, I had a great experience with Brookline Hearing. The staff were always courteous and I believe that Judy Arick is the best audiologist I have ever had. She always started appointments by asking what she could do for me, and was always cheerful throughout our appointments as well. Most importantly, she genuinely wanted to find the best solution for me, rather than maximizing her billing as much as possible. I will definitely come back to Brookline Hearing as long as I am in the Boston area, and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an audiologist. One note--there are two audiologists named Judith, and they both go by Judy. This was very confusing for me at first. Judy Arick is the more senior audiologist, and Judy Chasin is the younger one. I am sorry that I an limited to five stars. I have been using Brookline hearing services for around eight years. The first time I contacted them was on a Friday afternoon when I was just about to go away for a weekend to a niece's graduation. My hearing aid, purchased from someplace else, had died. I really wanted to be able to hear. They were kind enough to stay beyond their normal 5 o'clock closing and lend me a hearing aid. They fixed the old one and I have been using them ever since. I have mostly dealt with Lisa who is the hearing aid specialist. I have always found her to be kind, warm, and generous. When I did purchase new hearing aids, their prices were very competitive. And Lisa will work with you until your hearing aids are as fitted to your hearing as possible, I can't begin to convey how terrific Brookline Hearing Services is. Truly good people. read more

I've been with Brookline Hearing for nearly a decade, and couldn't be more pleased. Outside of having bought great hearing aids there several time, the follow-up is unbelievable, at no cost. Appointments are ALWAYS made within a day or two, if not the same day. My latest contact involved one of my hearing aids no longer working, due to a moisture problem. Brookline Hearing got my warranty extended at no cost, and the hearing aid was totally refurbished. They suggested I send in both hearing aids, and gave me two loaner aids, programmed as my own aids had been programmed. One google review states that they declined to remove wax. They're probably not even permitted to do that. That's for a doctor's office. read more

My mother has a great deal of hearing loss. He old hearing aids started to give her more of a problem than help, so I took her to an otolaryngologist . That doctor after observation and tests decided that she needed a new set of aids. So, we went to see a specialist at Mass Audiology Waltham. Their specialist took another test, gathered her MassHealth information, and promised to cal within 6 weeks, so we could come and pick up the hearing aids. ...Two month later I made a call the office myself. A very rood receptionist barked at me that I have to have a patience, that these are very delicate apparatuses, that they need special attention, and so on... She said she will call me herself, so I should not interrupt her busy days. She never called... Two months later I decided o drop in there without appointment. By that time my 81 y.o. mom started to get really depressed. She had no desire to attend the adult day care she use to enjoy... So I went to the office. A totally new person greeted me there. She told me that the man who used to work before her, left, and did'n leave any records. She also said that he was taking the orders from MassHealth patients, but never processed them! What a shock! She also suggested that I should take my mother to see Suzanne Rakov, which I did. What an angel! After performing her own thorough examination Suzanne offered my mom two different brands to choose from. Mom could not tell them apart, so she randomly chose one. IN TWO DAYS (!) I got a call to come and try them! So we did. Suzanne tuned the phones very carefully, and instructed mom on how to use them. She invited us to come in a couple of weeks. In two weeks my mother admitted that the aids were not so perfect, and that the other brand seemed to work better. Suzanne tuned her aids again and sent her home. NEXT DAY (!) her receptionist called to confirm that new ones arrived! We came, got tuned, and my dear mother lives happily ever after. The whole process took 3 weeks! Suzanne is such and attentive specialist and empathetic person! She has an endless reserve of patience. She truly enjoys what she does. I wish there where more people like her... I liked this place at first because the people are nice and seem competent but I was not listened to when I complained that the device was not helping me hear. A year later I returned insisting that it was not helping. The audiologist changed the piece that went into my ear and raised the level; then it finally worked. No apologies. I spent a frustrating year trying to convince myself that the thing was working. Further, they did not tell me anything about insuring the device once the year of free loss coverage ran out. I recently lost it and am now stuck replacing it. They could sell insurance policies at the point of sale, or at least emphasize the importance of doing so, and prevent these kinds of losses and frustrations. read more
