Mass Eye and Ear, of all places, doesn't understand accessibility and accommodations for people with vision and language disabilities. They have a page on their website that says they can provide communication in required formats for people with disabilities, but none of their staff are aware that the law requires this. The webpage saying they provide accessible communication only has a phone number to contact them. It has one e-mail address, but that is for requesting interpreter services, not for general e-mail correspondence from people who need to contact the clinic via text. The website says to use the portal to schedule appointments for patients who are already registered, but the portal is set up so there is no way to request an appointment unless already seen recently by that department. The Patient Relations office has no idea that the ADA exists and told the person to find an abled person to make a voice call for them. The nurses in the departments don't understand what large print is and several of them have provided a legally blind multiply disabled person with handwritten illegible instructions, stating they don't know how where they would type and print instructions to give the person. I was treated like garbage by certain staff members and when you try to make an appointment for one of their doctors in an office they put you on hold and then proceed to hang up on you. I called 4 times and got hung up on every SINGLE time. Also I was given a surgery date that was then canceled last minute. I was yelled at and treated poorly and as a person with autism I'm pretty sure that's a full on crime. After my surgery I don't intend to continue as a patient at mass eye and ear or mass general. The doctors are smart but their attitudes are meh and very questionable but everyone else is super rude and disrespectful. Wouldn't recommend this place read more

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE MASS EYE AND EAR EMERGENCY ROOM ONLY In April of 2024 I had an emergency situation with my eyes. I'm a blade shaver and managed to touch my three blade razor to one of my eyes. That contact dumped a whole lot of shaving gel and beard stubble into my eye. I hoped I had not scraped off part of a cornea. I promptly washed out that eye and got everything out of it, as best I could. The vision problems began a week later. My reading vision began to blur and got scary. And then a similar thing started happening to my distance vision. I called Mass Eye and Ear's ER and drove there early one morning, feeling regretful that I had not gone there many days earlier. First off, I was seen by one and then a second, very young doctor, obviously interns. One of the doctors was literally sprinting to another patient and returning back to me. That's OK, as long as he helps me and fixes what's wrong. I was shocked by the ancient equipment at the Mass Eye and Ear ER, it was old and creaky diagnostic equipment and the exam was very uncomfortable. The light shined into my eyes at different angles was painful and felt like torture and went on and on. The doctor would do something and run off again, presumably to another ER patient. I could go on and on, but suffice to say, I was not helped. I got some eye drops for dry eye as suggested but dry eye was not emphasized as a major problem. When I got home and tried the reading glasses, the intern stated I needed due to my older eyes, those eye glasses only magnified the blurriness! I was now more anxious and worried, AFTER the exam at the Mass Eye and Ear ER. I supposedly had gone to the best... no, not in this case of this emergency room. I work in a health-related field and did research on an eye care practice, Casco Bay EyeCare, in Portland, Maine where I had lived for many years. I had heard from many happy patients of this practice. Unbeknownst to me, optometrists have become your every day eye doctor, for many eye issues beyond simple eye glass prescription and fittings. Many ophthalmologists now mostly do surgery and treat diseases of the eye. After researching the optometrists at Casco Bay EyeCare, I found the one for my needs and she could see me now! I drove three hours to Portland and arrived sleep deprived, exhausted and hopeless. Upon entering Casco Bay EyeCare, I felt just a tiny bit of hope. The office was bright, white and clean. It looked like an entry room to heaven. One of the kind, front desk gals gave me a hug I asked for. The doctor, Amy Cyr, soon appeared and re-assured me right away that she could help me... and she did! Her equipment was white and shiny and looked brand new, as if it had arrived yesterday. It was state of the art, not the "Civil War era" ancient equipment at the Mass Eye and Ear ER. Dr. Cyr's diagnostic equipment was soft and gentle on my eyes, there was zero discomfort. She also had a hand held examination device the interns in Boston did not have. Dr. Cyr spent over an hour with me, with no sprinting out of her exam room and returning in a huff. After a thorough and painless exam, she told me I had one of the worst cases of dry eye she'd ever seen. She actually sketched out what it looked like. Dr. Cyr prescribed specific OTC eye drops, Refresh preservative-free, that she directed me to apply every two hours and before bed. Within days, after feeling so anxious and hopeless for weeks, my eyes began to return to normal. Within ten days or so, of intensive daily use of the Refresh eye drops, both eyes were completely normal again. I did not need eye glasses as the intern at Mass Eye and Ear ER claimed I did. I had extreme dry eye and nothing else! At a three week follow up exam, with my eyesight fully restored, I brought a bouquet of flowers for Dr. Cyr and her wonderful office gals. I consider Dr. Amy Cyr and the Casco Bay EyeCare team my eye angels, and told them so. I am beyond grateful to Amy and the entire practice, they put the Mass Eye and Ear ER crew of interns, with their ancient, painful equipment to shame. Yesterday, on April 17, 2025, my house staff took me to the Main Campus of Mass Eye & Ear in Boston, Massachusetts, on the first floor, where I waited forever to be seen, I had arrived at Mass Eye & Ear at 10:30 AM, and my appointment was until 2:30 PM so I been at Mass Eye & Ear Main Campus for five hours, this always happens when I have my daily check up for my eyes, the eye doctor keeps me waiting, so my experience each time when I have my daily check up for my eyes is very stressful because of the waiting. read more

Terrible on the phone. I spoke to 3 persons on the phone. The last was a nightmare in the Cornea department. She refused to give her name, refused to escalate the call to a manager, berated me for asking her if she knew what escalate means, and this asian sounding woman hung up on me. I spoke to an intern who was nice at the main number and Chantelle in the cornea department who was especially helpful and intelligent. Chantelle told me she had my fax from my doctor with the requisite referral, The person today told me she did not have the fax and it would have to be sent again and she did not know who Chantelle is and refused to inquire. This arrogance and poor office administration is frustrating. I am a regular good paying customer of Brigham Whigams, trying to coordinate a cornea appointment at Mass eye and ear, with my upcoming mid april Brigham Whigams appointment before booking hotel and plane reservations. This is not to be a reflection on the medical excellence i expect from Mass Eye and Ear but rather a heads up. And believe me Mark Glasser. I am not afraid to speak out. read more

Hi MEEI, I had UPPP surgery on Wednesday, July 18 and went to the PACU at 9:30 am. I had a difficult time with the nurse. Please see my documentation below. A found our 1-hour exchange circular and frustrating about why she couldn't increase pain meds and give me water. I documented this below. My best guess is that it can be attributed to ESL, a non-U.S. clinical culture she may have come from, and not having the ability to listen and problem-solve with the patient. I finally got the pain meds (brought pain down to a 3) , a cup of water, and ice chips to bring down the inflammation. What was all of this about? My next nurse said she knows Elizabeth "has this history". Btw, the surgical team was excellent! [Note: I have not gotten a reply from the Nurse Manager] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Me: Can you give me something for the pain? I'm a 7. And I need water - I haven't had anything to drink since yesterday. Nurse: You're at the maximum for pain meds... and you're having trouble breathing. Me: What do you mean the max? (she couldn't tell me) - and I'm not having trouble breathing Nurse: Your O2 is low - pain meds gives you shallow breathing Me: How about if I just take deep breaths? (I did and O2 went up) - now can I have something for the pain? Nurse: You have COPD Me: What?? I don't have COPD Nurse: Well, you're on a CPAP Me: No, I haven't use a CPAP for a year... can't tolerate it - it's why I just did a UPPP Nurse: It says you're on it now.... The medications we give you will mean you can't remember Me: I remember everything...can you update the EHR? I don't use a CPAP... by the way, what's your name? and your last name? and how about the water? Nurse: Your nauseous - you could vomit Me: I don't have trouble breathing and I am not nauseous!! I was scheduled to see Dr Abel David, ENT doctor, after review of an Audiology test. he was exceptionally rude, personal insults and gender based defaming statements within a minute of the visit. Never recommend him. I expected honest reviews specific to this field of study. instead got a juvenile who believed he could defame a patient. They have no ADA Coordinator and no effective management. read more

First I had to spend a total of three hours for a check-up, because they were trying to measure something with a machine that was not made for it, according to the tech, and then apparently I was "misplaced". Then I received a 300 USD bill when I was supposed to have a copay of 10 dollars only. I was at no time told I would have to pay that amount and didn't pay that sum last time, for the same check-up. It turns out they had made a mistake in coding the claim for the insurance, didn't get reimbursed and decided to make me pay for their incompetence, all that without giving me any information. For one year I had to call their services to change that, and they told me they'd put the bill on hold and never did. I unsuccessfully appealed to Blue Cross Blue Shield, which said they couldn't tell them how to do their job and I had to see with them directly. I tried to contact the doctor but the manager would never call me back. I then complained to their patient complaint system. They sent it for recoding but again entered the wrong code! Which led to me getting the same medical bill again without explanation. I called them and they told me it would go to collections if I didn't pay. They even lowered the price so that I would pay, like I'm going to accept to pay 275 instead of 300 to make your incompetence go away. After calling again the financial services, a complaint to the attorney general and a complaint to another service, I finally got a voicemail from them (so they did have my number finally) a few days ago telling me that they had successfully recoded the claim and that my balance was now 0. No excuses, nothing. The service was in March 2022. For one year I wasted countless hours trying to fix stupid. Their job is really to try to make you pay because they're unable to do their job properly. If I had been someone with less ressources and less time I probably would have had to pay. They prey on people. Unless you're dying and there's no other hospital around don't go there. read more

Mass Eye & Ear truly lived up to their world class expectations. Special touches were: the Chaplin walking around talking to parents and kids while they waited, extensive playrooms, and the KINDEST and chillest team of care professionals. They really made what could have been a stressful situation very grounding. Extra shout out to Dr. Namiranian for coming in on her day off for our son and a couple of other kiddos that needed the surgery sooner than the schedule allowed for booking. Alyssa at Dr. Namiranian was also so kind, patient, timely in responses, and thorough. The intake floor at Mass Eye & Ear became our son's playground and he made himself very comfortable crawling around to say to everyone waiting for surgery and was quite comfortable lunging at nurses for hugs and tours around the ward. The Best Care! If you have an urgent problem having to do with eyes, ears, or throat, this is where you should go. Maybe because this is a specialty ER, it was not nearly as crowded as a general ER--and the wait, at least for me on this occasion, was less than 30 minutes. The entire care team was knowledgeable, skilled, kind, and empathetic (I had the good fortune to be cared for by Carmen, Katherine, Lauren, and Dr. McKee). They explained everything to me, step-by-step, and prepared me well. While 3 days prior, my Fish Center GP had decided that I had a viral sinus infection and should just wait it out, even though I told her that symptoms worsened over the weekend, this team knew exactly what they were seeing. After carefully diagnosing the peritonsillar abscess, they lanced it and sent me home with prescriptions for antibiotic and other meds to bring down the swelling. I feel very fortunate to have been taken care of by such thorough and thoughtful people and wish I had known about the clinic earlier. read more

1. I was pleased with the doctor and resident. This one star review is for the rest of the staff at Mass Eye and Ear. I had an extreme loss of vision and had been to a local urgent care, ER, PCP, optometrist, 2 ophthalmologists and a Mass General neurologist. All advised an urgent consult with neuro ophthalmology. My insurance requires that my PCP refer to specialists. So he did. Countless times. I spent 35 days calling every single day having rude receptionists hang up on me, refuse to schedule, tell me they don't take PCP referrals, they don't have the referral, they need a diagnosis first, they don't take my insurance, etc. All 100% inaccurate info. I called patient relations countless times and they could not get me an appointment either. They advised me to go to the ER because they could not make a simple appointment with countless referrals. Instead I called my neurologist. When my mass General neurologist refers? They called with an appointment within the hour for 5 months later. They very clearly have a bias in who the referrals come from. If you don't have a well known specialist referring you, you will not get in. However, many patients for insurance purposes need their PCP to refer. No matter how many people I spoke to at MEE, they couldn't comprehend this. I had referrals from pcp, neurology and ophthalmology. Appointment comes and goes and then I am billed. Incorrectly. I was covered here. Why? They claimed I didn't have authorization. What kind of authorization could I possibly need beyond 10 PCP, ER, opthalmology and neurology referrals?!?! It took MONTHS of phone calls with patient relations to resolve the billing. Patient relations is cordial and did eventually resolve the issue. However, my general experience here was terrible. I waited for months, had insane difficulty trying to get an appointment, received no answers or diagnosis, and then had months more aggravation to resolve billing errors. I have never in my life experienced such rude and inefficient staff as the Mass Eye and Ear schedulers. They hang up on patients, make no effort to help, can't keep track or act on referrals and have the worst customer service skills of any healthcare organization on the east coast. read more

I had a middle fossa craniotomy done by Dr. Daniel Lee and his team. This was to repair some defects in my skull near my ear. Although a tough situation for me, it was a wonderful experience because of the great care I received from everyone there, the skill and kindness of Dr. Lee, and the results of the surgery which have been life changing. Useful floors: Lobby= as you walk in, the right hand side has a cafe stand 3rd floor= library including a small computer lab, open 8:30am 7th floor= cafeteria, outpatient pharmacy. The outpatient pharmacy DOES NOT ACCEPT ANY INSURANCE so everything will have to be paid out of pocket. For meds that can be commonly found in retail pharmacies, they will highly recommend you to fill your Rx at your local pharmacy as MEEI's formulary and therefore the pharmacy does not carry every single type of medication. As a hospital pharmacy, they mainly cater to inpatient, compounded medications as opposed outpatient, OTC meds. The cafeteria view is SPECTACULAR. You have the entire view of the Charles river, the "salt and pepper" bridge, portions of the red line, as well as the museum of science. Highly recommend to stop by on a sunny day, hands down a million dollar view. Lunches are awesome! 100% better than my college's cafeteria options and some are even comparable to restaurant food. Everyday of the week has a different specials of the day menu; each special has some sort of meat, bread/potatoes, vegetables in an effort for guests and staff to have a balanced meal. For vegetarians there's made to go sandwiches and a salad bar. Spoiled with drinks...soda fountain, bottled soda, Tropicana orange juices (no pulp, lots of pulp etc), Naked smoothie, Snapple, etc. Like a friggin' drinks aisle in CVS. One of their hot meal specials + a drink will cost you an average of 8 bucks. The cafeteria staff are lovely! They don't embody the attitude of 'fml I want to be somewhere else.' They smile, say have a nice day, and when one dude asked me whether I wanted some sauce and I said yes, he replied "it's sweet like you" lol.... Cafeteria is clean. Great volunteering program available. You get free $7 lunch coupons if you're a volunteer here. It's a way of the hospital thanking you for your services. MEEI is a teaching hospital and is affiliated with Harvard so there will be many residents and interns who maybe observing or working with you FYI. As a specialized hospital, MEEI is small in comparison to Children's or Brighams. In that respect, it is annoying the hospital is built up instead of having floors that cover a large area. Don't go to the ER!! Eye service is excellent but ear not so much!! The ER is understaffed and not remotely equipped for busy times!! If you go to the ER for any sort of Ear issue be prepared to wait for hours!! The Ear doctors there are excellent if you have the patience to wait for them but it will take 2-3+ hours on most days. The Customer Experience (aka Patient Experience) is atrocious and it's obvious no leaders at MEEI have any expertise in Customer Experience to improve the ER area. The eye doctors are excellent at the hospital but the ear doctors are lacking and if you attempt to go to the ER for help prepare to be disappointed. After waiting 3+ hours i finally left and will no longer donate to the hospital. Massive improvements needed at the ER including staffing more on busy days!! read more

I brought my sister-in-law all the way to Boston to see two specialists. Dr Daniel J Lee who specializes in Otology and Neurotology and Richard F Lewis who is an Otolaryngologist . Both Dr's are tops in their field for Vertigo and Vestibular problems. Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is on Charles Street in downtown Boston. It's right next to Massachusetts General Hospital. The best thing to do when coming here for treatment or an appointment is to Valet park right in front of Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. . It's $15 for the entire day. Its especially convenient when it's cold out or rainy., or if the person is in a wheelchair. You just pull up , the valet gives you a ticket and it's only a few hundred feet to get inside the building where there is a information desk and staff to direct you where to go. Once inside, there is a place to pay for valet parking and wait for you vehicle to be pulled up. Don't park at Mass General parking lot because it's a far walk and if the person is in a wheelchair it's very hard to get the elevator down because so many people use it and you'll have a long wait. If you make the mistake of entering at Mass General Hospital you can get to Mass Eye and Ear but it's several elevators and a long walk to the other building. Once at Mass Eye and Ear, there are two sets of elevators that will take you where you want to go. The first visit was to Dr. Lee. He is very through and spent a great deal of time with my sister-in-law. He did a lot of testing and he and his staff were very kind. After meeting with Dr Lee we saw Dr. Lewis a couple of days later. He too was very professional and through along with his staff. We left with reports and further information about my sister-in-law's illnesses. I had cataract surgery here with Dr Nandini Venkateswaran last month. The entire procedure, from initial visit until final evaluation, post procedure, was tremendous. The staff at Mass Eye and Ear were professional, caring and efficient, from check in to exit. That experience was inclusive of the entire team involved, starting with the comfortable welcome from the first receptionist. Dr Venkateswaran is a superb professional and that thought is evidenced today in my new found sight. Further, she is a caring individual who is genuine in her excitement for your success in the improvements made due her procedures. Visits to the office are relaxed and personable. I was attending a hockey game in Boston on a Friday night when my retina decided to detach. I proceeded to the Mass Eye and Ear Emergency room and was promptly seen by a physician. As luck would have it, a retina specialist was walking through the ER and was available to further evaluate my condition. She saw the tear and immediately scheduled a surgery for early the next morning (Saturday). The surgical team was fantastic, they explained everything step by step. The Anesthesiologist was a charming gent. The team wrapped me in a warm blanket and I have to say the whole event was rather not uncomfortable. I recently met Dr. Weis Rahmati at an initial consultation visit where he quickly diagnosed an issue I have had since January. Last week he performed a Sialendoscopy on my right and left salivary glands and a biopsy on the inside of my lip. I had consulted numerous doctors in my local area but they basically didn't know what to do with me. After persistent pain and swelling I was encouraged by coworker to see medical help from Mass Eye and Ear. I am thrilled that I did although the outcome wasn't as positive as I had hoped. It was determined that I have Sjogren's Disease. He put in some temporary stents as well. From the moment I entered Mass Eye and Ear I knew that I would be well cared from. The staff was so sweet and kind and very compassionate as though I were the only patient. They did every thing possible to make sure ever question was answered as well as returned phone calls prompt and informative. I had my procedure last Thursday and wow talk about TLC!!! Everyone went above and beyond to make sure at every step of the way I was comfortable and felt safe. So no doubt I made the right decision to seek treatment at MA Eye and Ear. Let me drive a Chevy through your front teeth and into a brick wall, and you'll be right where I am on the pain scale. I just had my tonsils removed and deviated septum fixed, so I'm in a world of hurt now, but that's only because I refuse to take the Percocet they prescribed, which do a real hallucagenic number on me (last time I took them, I hallucinated I was grilling airconditioners on an open BBQ). That said, I can't say enough good things about the place. First, I had a great doctor and surgeon, Stacy Gray, who is not just hot, but a wonderful physician and instilled all the confidence in going through with this surgery. Second, in the pre-op room, I had a really hot medical assistant... like... yowzers hot... and even bragged to the other patients in the room around me. Third, I don't even remember making it into the operating room, cuz they jabbed me with some IV, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in the post-op room with bandaids around my face, and a very full bladder... (and it takes quite a struggle in post-anaesthesia trying to plant your pecker into a urine bottle without making a mess). Everything, from consultancy, to pre-op, to the operation, to the overnight post-op stay, and even the instructions on what to do after I got back home went well for me (except dealing with the mucus pouring out of my nose after trying a nasal flush for the first time..... it felt lilke a seal blew its load inside my sinuses). My mother spent most of my sister's life bringing her here every week when she was a child due to her eyesight. I never really acknowledged how great this place is and what they do for their patients here. That is, until I came to see my aunt here last week. She was checking out when we arrived and honestly, the nurse assisting us was nothing but pleasant, instructions and all were detailed and was given for take home. The front desk was very kind to our kids and the building is spotless (sanitation is very important!) so I wanted to write a review to thank this place for all it's done for my sister within the last 20 years and what it continues to do for others. read more

I visited the Mass Eye and Ear emergency room at 8pm on Tuesday October 26th. After 4.5 hours waiting in the ER I was seen for glass in my eye. The young Dr on duty at 12:30pm pulled a piece of what he said was glass out of my eye. If it wasn't for a 4:45 hour visit and leaving a 2nd piece of glass in my eye I would say well done. The Dr seemed rushed and I was last person in ER, obviously I won't use Mass Eye & Ear ER agai. read more

MEEI is one of the best facilities in the country. Read the negative posts, and you'll see that they are written by folks who felt put out due to some administrative fluke, so they chose to gripe about it. The fact is that we are extraordinarily lucky to get such excellent care right at our doorsteps. People come from all over the world to get proper care at MEEI. I went to MEEI because I needed a second opinion, and glad that I did. Because the eye doctor I was seeing at home was a decent person, but lacked the diagnostic skills you'll find at MEEI. I finally found out why I'd been losing vision in my eye and am now on the path to arresting that loss. I'll never get the lost vision restored. If I had been seen at MEEI at the onset of my symptoms, I could have been spared. So, one final note: To repeat, if you want the best possible care for your eyes and ears, come to MEEI. read more
