What creditials can't give you, however, is patient care. My experience with the front desk/administrative staff, the nurses, the other doctors I interacted with (it's a learning hospital) and Dr. Gray herself has been beyond exceptional. The front desk staff (especially Sam) has gone beyond all expectations to make certain that I was prepared for the appointment, had all the answers to any questions I may have had, and even went through great lengths to assist me in scheduling an appointment with another specialist Dr. Gray referred me to who had a notoriously difficult front staff and who I was especially frustrated with. The remainder of the administrative staff was also friendly and helpful, from receptionist to billing. Dr. Gray herself was friendly and informative. She took the time to explain each test she was doing and why it was needed and, although, ultimately, my problem does not lie in Dr. Gray's arena to be resolved (hence the referral), she was helpful in ruling out potential causes and helping me understand what the next steps would be. I've been seeing Dr. Franco for 4 years for various vocal cord issues (recurrent bleeding and granulomas, a la Adele and John Mayer). I've seen him twice in the past month, once for surgery. I take the bus down from Portland, ME because he is one of the world's premiere otolaryngologists. All of the ENTs I've seen in Maine act like fanboys, eager to impress "Ramon." Several of them have spent time under Dr. Franco's tutelage. In the last couple years, Dr. Franco has become more of an international superstar--he travels to teach docs in South America, Eastern and Western Europe, and perhaps beyond. When he's in town, he's often swarmed by doctors who have travelled from all over the US and the globe to study under him. Being out of town so much does make it harder to get an appointment with Dr. Franco. Sometimes I get really frustrated with waiting for weeks to see him, making a four-hour round-trip, and then getting a five or 10-minute appointment. But there are a few reasons I keep coming back. 1. There's a reason he's so popular. He's one of the world's best at what he does. 2. I want to go to a doctor who sees my weird vocal condition and can say, "meh, I've seen worse," because he sees weird vocal cord/larynx stuff all the time. 3. Being with a teaching doctor means that there are always several people looking at my case. It's like a built-in second opinion. 4. He's shown over the years that I'm not just a case, but that he genuinely cares and remembers me. When I came to see him in March after a 1.5 year break, he said "oh, I was just thinking about you last week and wondering how you're doing. Remember that I said xxx to you, Dr. So-and-So?" And I knew it was true. Nancy, Dr. Franco's assistant, can seem grouchy but she has a soft spot. I've just learned to be relentlessly friendly and appreciative. As a result, she has bent over backwards for me in several cases. She has a tough job keeping track of Dr. Franco's ever-changing busy schedule and frustrated patients who wish they could see him sooner.

He completely ignored my significant others' symptoms and her statements, and gave her a diagnosis of "anxiety" that simply isn't true (as has been since verified by actually competant professionals). He also told her to keep taking a drug he prescribed that other physicians said was dangerous (and prescribed it in the first place without haven't a diagnosis). This guy might come off as reasonable but his sexism and bias toward thinking "all women are hysterical" make him a bad doctor. Don't see him.

The bill was sent to a collection agency after a few months, so not only did I have terrible scars all over my face, I started getting hounded almost daily to pay a bill for twice the cost of the procedure that I had already paid. None of my friends or family felt my neck look improved, but many of them asked me if I had been in an accident and questioned what had happened to leave me with such horrible scars. I have never had worse care at any facility than I did at MEEI ER today. As a man who has had a…read morelot of care across the country that is saying something. I am a Registered Nurse and a professional classical singer. I have strong interest in immunology and the singing voice. My big impediment to success in any career is an underlying immune deficiency. I recently developed severe pneumonia. I was started on exceptionally high doses PO steroids and by definition am further immune compromised. Last week I endured new, severe hearing loss and ear pain when I was forced to flee a wildfire by airplane while I was ill with the above pneumonia. Went to MEEI for hearing and ear pain eval. Was asked if I had any issues that needed accommodation. I stated that my hearing loss would make it difficult to hear my name called. They said they had me. Meanwhile the waiting room was packed hook by jowl with patients. No ventilation. No one masking and some had active coughs. I was told to sit in one of the annexes to get some space. I did not hear my name called when the triage nurse called me. No apologies offered from the nurse, just a grumble and annoyance. . After that I was again asked if I had any issues that needed accommodation I again stated my acute, severe hearing loss and was again told that they had me. I am a nurse. I know it sucks to work in health care nowadays so I did not keep harassing folks. I waited patiently. After three hours of waiting in that absolute bedlam I asked what was up. . I was met with attitude and anger. I was told that I had been taken off the patient roster because they had called me and I never came to the desk. They wanted to know why I did not answer them when they called my name. They stated they would place me on the bottom of the triage list and I could wait my turn all over again. I pushed back and stated that this was unacceptable. That as the allegedly pre- eminent ENT ER for the region this was outrageous malpractice. I was given a patronizing speech about having good manners. ( no one identifies themselves so I had no idea who I was being scolded by or what their job title ls). I again pointed out: " I am severely ill with pneumonia. I have severe acute hearing loss. I am immune compromised and my thinking is impaired by high dose steroids". Not a word of compassion. No empathy. Not a hint of an apology. Just more scolding. Patronizingly told that if I was able to act more nicely I would be seen . I am a nice man so of course I was brought to exam room. I was seen by the doc ( no name or title given ) Doc wanted to know why I thought I had immune disorder. She seemed in a total daze. Sent upstairs for Hearing eval. In Audio I was treated with compassion and kindness first and only encounter in the entire 7 hours I was at MEEI. Curiously the Audio clinic had these really cool mid-century buzzers to hold on to so you knew when you were going to be seen. Funny how that technology hasn't tricked down to the ER in 30 years. I guess it's better to yell at your acutely ill hearing impaired patients and threaten to deny care . That makes sense. Seen again by same doc. Told I have hearing loss. Recommended nasal steroids. I stated again that I am on high dose steroids. This was news to her and she then stated nasal steroids contraindicated. Stated she was making a referral to an MEEI doc for me. Wants me seen in 1-2 weeks time. States she was calling in an RX for antihistamine. She handed me DC paperwork. ( never bothered to have me review or sign ) and told me I as good to go. Left ER to discover that DC paperwork tells me to call my PCP ( not an ent ). to ask for Audio referral. Found out they called in RX to a town I haven't lived in for 10 years ( 1 hour drive in each direction.) Went back to ER. They hooked ho apt with audio but in late September. I am supposed to call a number and beg for something earlier. I kept thinking of the outrageous CEO perks that the crooks that run MEEI/ Partners are getting. How many staff are being cut. How many patient waiting rooms are eliminated so those 1%ers can build their mansions and get their yachts and go to their MAGA fundraisers. The care offered at MEEI was an insult to the profession. It is substandard bordering on malpractice. I do not blame a single clinician I met. I do not blame facitlies management. I blame the corrupt CEO's who are ramming our health care into the ground. And taking wonderful clinicians and us poor patients along as hostages . I just lavaged my nose. Took my megadose steroids and antibiotics for my pneumonia.
