This is the second time I have been to Toast. I had the prime rib, baked potatoes and veggies. Prime rib was cooked as requested & baked potatoes was good. Didn't eat the veggies as I was too full but they looked good. We had some drinks & sat around and talked for several hours & were the last people out of there. Good food, great service throughout & background music that wasn't some new weird nonsense angry teens listen to while driving. We come to this area a couple of times a year to visit family and initially loved Toast. We'd come in at least 2 or 3 times for lunch or dinner over the course of a long weekend. The last couple of times I'm sorry to say that Toast has slipped, ... a lot. Not only is the place looking worn down (Exh A - the Men's Room looks like there was a bar fight in there and has yet to be put back together again). The food is still pretty good. But the service, which used to be great, is now closer to indifferent. I'm not saying we won't be back. But, before Toast was our "default". (No need to fire up Yelp, let's go to Toast.) Now, the next time we visit, I am will be on Yelp and looking for alternatives in the area or in Lincoln. read more

We needed a place to eat on our way from Omaha to Crete that was close to the interstate. Had never heard of Toast, but the menu looked appealing. My wife and I both had the grilled salmon, with grilled green beans, she had mashed potatoes and I had rice. The meal was wonderful. If you're like me, you saw "Toast" and expected to find a full breakfast menu. As it turns out, the name refers to the other kind of toast, a call to raise a glass. Minor details aside, Toast serves casual American fare for lunch and dinner along with a full drink menu. Unless you arrived hoping to order an omelet or stack of pancakes, you won't be disappointed. I visited around noon on a Wednesday with my dad and brother. The dining room, which I would describe as modern-rustic, was sparsely populated but had filled up by the time we left. There's a bar and several TVs on the walls, but by no means does it feel like Buffalo Wild Wings. Service was prompt and polite. The menu balances variety with familiarity, including appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, and even a limited kids menu. It's easy to find something you'll like at a reasonable price. My dad, who has visited before, recommended we try the House Tomato Dill soup, which was rich and creamy with great tomato flavor (Campbell's can't hold a candle to it). I had the Toast Reuben sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes, and our server gladly accommodated my requests to go light on the 1000 island and hold the gravy on the potatoes. Portions are not enormous but will easily satisfy. Notably, Toast offers several $9.99 lunch specials Mon-Fri from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Toast isn't an outstanding, Michelin star-worthy experience, but it isn't trying to be. If you're looking for prompt service, a comfortable environment, and satisfying food, I recommend Toast. read more

To me, this level of responsiveness and accountability is admirable, shows the owner cares about his customers, and cares about his product. Based purely on this interaction I'd be willing to give Toast another try if I'm in town again. So, I literally walked out of Toast 10 minutes ago with a take-out order. The food itself is not bad and the server was very friendly, but they completely messed up my order. I got the California Cobb Salad. Description from the menu follows: Fresh mixed greens and multi-grain croutons, garnished with deli-style smoked turkey, chopped market bacon, fresh zucchini, red onion, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, crispy avocado, and bleu cheese crumbles Now, I asked them to hold the zucchini and artichoke hearts, and put dressing on the side. They did hold the two items I requested - AND EVERYTHING ELSE, TOO!! Seriously, no red onion, no avocado, no blue cheese, and no dressing... Recently went there for the first time. Service was fast and food was very good! I had the beer cheese fried chicken. Yeah it was a heavy, filling meal that sounded like a questionable pairing, but it was delicious. The chicken was moist and juicy and the the sauce added just the right amount of salt to the dish. Went with a party of 6 and we all seemed very satisfied with the food and the price. Perhaps the only issue I had was with the presentation of the carrots. They were cooked but had the tiniest amount of stalk left on top. I imagine it was presented this way to look pretty but I found myself questioning whether I should eat that part or remove it as garnish. In my opinion that shouldn't be a decision that needs to be made. But other than that, all good! read more

The space is nice and the staff is friendly, but the food seriously under-delivers, even by Lincoln standards. The cook doesn't have a good understanding for spice and balance; from the cloyingly sweet bacon jam to the anemic grilled chicken, the "heroes" of the dish don't keep you going back for more. :/ Even the salad was improperly dressed and had a few rotten leaves, () but at least the dressing was yummy. What is worse (at least for me) the kitchen seems to have an obsession with the microwave - leaving the cheddar muffins and the bread pudding chewy and greasy and gross. The caramel for the bread pudding was tasty and decadent but was ruined by the texture of the bread that had gone cold in the middle from the microwaving. This is the first one star review I have ever left. In the past, I've left 5 stars or nothing. I'm just so upset with this place I feel the need to share. I had a large group of friends who were in the back room. We were the only ones back there and asked that one of the the Tvs be changed to fox sports so we could watch the ufc fight. The wait staff (who were excellent the whole night) informed us that the owners "disagreed" with the ufc and refused to let us watch it. I could not believe how inappropriate this was since we were the only ones in the room and we were quiet and spending hundreds of dollars at their establishment. In short, excellent staff, terrible owners, mediocre food. Will not return. Update: The owner contacted me personally and explained the miscommunication with the staff and assured me that there was No problem with the ufc being played in the restaurant. . I was in town for business and looking for a nice place my friends could join us not near the Haymarket or the Railyard area after the games. I was informed about this location. I walked in and the atmosphere was very nice. It is a fast casual restaurant, coffee place bar. It was busy that night and I looked around at some of the plates of food being brought out and they looked nice. I thought it was cheesy to have a sign up roster to control waiting customers. I got seated and was quick to get my warranty and beer. They have a nice selection of beer. I ordered a side salad and the steak stroganoff. Nice portion size on the salad and the steak stroganoff was very nice. I prefer to cut my own steak, but that was done nicely too. You would think with everything going well, why two stars? Well during my meal there was a bit of an uproar in the restaurant. This lasywas upset about the vegetables served and how they looked nasty, and that the cooks can not do anything right. She and her friend seemed a little toasty herself. She got up and headed to what I presume was the entrance of the kitchen. After she came out she looked more up set and apologized to her friend how bad the food was. I asked my waitress who that was? She replied it was the owner of this establishment. I quickly paid my tab and left. To be honest, this lady had nothing good to say about her staff and the food was coming out nicely, and the service was great. How this place keeps anyone to work here is a mystery. When the owner voices their negative opinion and can be heard by most of the restaurant, there is something more wrong here and you won't get my service of my friends and family. read more

I thought this place was painfully average. My wife and I were looking to try someplace new, and with our first choice having a long wait on a Sat. night, we drove out here to see what everyone was raving about. I was surprised that there was seat-yourself service and it wasn't real busy. While I was in the mood for a beer, there was no menu with drink options and the waitress didn't offer any, so I went with a soda. We had the toasted nachos to start- not bad, but kind of dry and nothing special. I tried the peanut butter and blue burger for my main course. The burger itself was tasty and cooked just right, but the blue cheese was overpowering and I struggled to taste the pb. The fries were really dry and not that tasty. My wife had the NY strip salad. The steak was cooked ok and the salad was ok- but just ok. The prices were fair and it wasn't a terrible meal, but it was very forgettable. I'd give the place another shot if I'm ever in that area, but I'll never again drive out of my way to eat there. read more

Toast didn't live up to the 4 and 5 star ratings and raves it's given. For an appetizer I tried the Italian Wontons and they we're bad to say the least. The wonton shell was burned to a crisp and the cube of meat with a melted slice of cheese was lacking taste. And the sweet and sour dipping sauce doesn't go with anything outside of asian food why wouldn't it be marinara? Fo my entrée I had the french dip with coleslaw. It too was very underwhelming. The meat in the sandwich must have come from a plastic box from Super-Saver and the same could be said of the jus. If there was anything that saved the plate it was the coleslaw but thats sad if the star of my dinner was cabbage. Not going back. read more

Cool atmosphere and was a great place to go early in the morning to get out of the cold with a coffee during my daughter's too early band competition at Malcolm High School. Ordered the coffee which I think they sell The Mill Coffee. Way dark coffee, if you like that. Didn't seem good idea to have such a dark roast coffee as your house coffee. Ordered the bkfast sandwich as they all had for breakfast during the week said the only staff person there at 9am upon opening. This one person does cooking and serving. One woman walked in wanting latte's and the machine wasn't ready at opening. Back to the bkfast sandwich...it was bacon, cheddar, egg on a croissant. okay. However, the croissant looked and tasted like Thomas's packaged brand. Gross. I will be back later for lunch and let you know what's happening. Lunch: bleh. Had their tomato dill soup and half Sandwich, I forget the name it was something like Mr. Joe something. It was two types of cheeses melted with lettuce tomato and mushrooms on marble rye. Great place! Had a couple salads the one with almonds and cranberries with salmon instead of chicken and was delicious! Also tried the fried green beans and boom! Juicy, meaty, crisp! The menu is sentimental because it shows historical items around Nebraska that are within the building! The service was phenomenal, the drinks were great and cheap!! Wife and I sat down for a Sunday evening quiet dinner and were brought our waters by the hostess and told our server would be right with us. 10 minutes went by and a family of four sat down at the table beside us. There were 2 servers in our area that walked by us 6 times each without any offer of service or a courtesy message that they would be right back. The server at the family's table beside us quickly got there drinks and came back and took there order. 15 minutes setting at the table without service in a restaurant that was not busy at all is unacceptable. When we got up to leave the hostess tried to talk us into staying and then the manager noticed what was going on. We wanted nothing to do with this restaurant at that point. Do not waste your time. Popular lunch spot since I work in the area, they have a monopoly on that area. No other eating establishment around for quite a ways. Been there twice and it is consistent. Basically it's a sandwich and small menu shop. Had the "Hob Knob" and Andoille and Black Bean soup. Both were great, Hob Knob was on toasted wheat, smoked ham, spicy mayo, loaded with lettuce, sliced tomato, peppers, and swiss cheese. It was good, the ham was the best part, smoky, warm, just right. A touch of yellow mustard would have made it irresistible. I could have ordered a plateful by itself. The andoille and black bean soup was good too. Both had a little kick to them. Andoille was sparse, but there was an abundance of black beans. Nothing to rave about, but not awful either. It wasn't busy, but service was snail slow. We had a big party but even after ordering and service, it took forever for refills and getting the checks. For roughly $10, not bad. read more

The restaurant is situated in a splendid new area of town. I'd heard this place was worth a visit and was happy to have visited on a splendid summers evening with my wife. The experience was a bit hit and miss to be honest. My wife's dish was a Tuna Melt Sandwich with a hint of curry, simple but good quality and well executed especially as Tuna which can be dry. The serving size was more than ample and we landed up taking half home, not a bad problem I guess. I had the Tilapia with rice and fresh veggies, the fish could have stood up with the amount of salt/seasoning on it. Had to re-fire the dish and the second attempt which was much better with the seasoning left on the side for my discretion which was a very good call. I'll be back even if it's an odd kind of coffee shop/cafe/bar/restaurant. The cross branding with the Mill and Toast is confusing from a marketing and consumer perspective. Like trying to squeeze too many good ideas into one brand. The door has both names and logos on the front, upon entering it looks like a coffee shop but then there's a restaurant and bar area on the sides. Love the decor which was a mix of old reclaimed wood from other local buildings with modern industrial infusions. We will return for another summers evening laid back dinner. read more

Went here on a Sunday for lunch around 1 pm. Love the woodwork and high ceilings, makes for an open feel. Ordered the French Dip sandwich w/potato salad. The sandwich was solid. It may be a little salty for some people. The potato salad was good. Wife had a salad and daughter had some sort of cheese sandwich w/fries. We all enjoyed our meals. Great service! I had a Caesar salad, garlic green beans, and the seasonal vegetables which were caulilini and kale. The green beans and caulilini were sooooooooo good! Perfectly cooked and well seasoned. My co-worker had the southwest chicken salad with grilled chicken (love when they offer substitutes like this!) and he loved it.
