Been going here for years usually once a week. Little diner like the old days. Laid back w/old time decorations. Old time/laid back atmosphere. Order at counter and they bring your food. I think they do a lot of old style cooking. Meatloaf dinners, hot beef/turkey sandwiches, just like old times. Everything I have eaten there is very good. Decent prices. Staff is friendly. After reading several rave reviews about Hi Way Diner, we decided to go there for breakfast. My friend ordered a steak fajita wrap. It was gross. The size was incredibly small and the contents looked like overcooked dog food..not steak. She ended up taking one bite and leaving it. I ordered eggs with crisp hasbrowns and a pancake. The hashbrowns were nit crisp. The egg was OK. But the pancake tasted like a Bisquick pancake. There is no atmosphere and very little service. I'll never go there again and I recommend you don't either. I cannot figure out how people rate this place as high as they do. read more

Stopped for lunch on our way through Lincoln. Wanted lunch fare in a quick restaurant style way. This was perfect. You order at the counter, find your table, then your meal is delivered to your table. We wanted a soup salad or soup half sandwich type lunch. They didn't have that on the menu, instead we ordered a full club sandwich with a cup of soup on the side plus an extra cup of soup, Wah-lah soup and half a sandwich for two. Sandwich was good. Lots of turkey, crispy bacon, fresh veggies. Soup was good as well, curly egg noodles and chicken. Refillable fountain soda as well so we got one for the road. So the process is walk up and request what one likes to have and special requests seem acceptable. Perfect! So I have asked for burned brown/black pancake and hash browns with 2 eggs over medium. Pecan pie warmed to start. And pie is ok. Pancake is perfect to my specs, as is the hash browns. Maybe a first anywhere. I like everything about this. I told my cousin about my love for local spots and he nailed with with the beautiful Hi-Way Diner, a longtime Lincoln staple. The breakfast was top notch American and the history is still alive. I had a classic two eggs with hash browns and meat breakfast and my bacon came perfectly crispy, as requested. Hi-Way Diner is a "home town" diner in a city. The ambiance is great, like it's something out of the 1950s -- Mayberry-ish. You enter, order your food and drinks, grab your silverware and sit down. No matter how busy they are, the food comes quickly. It's always more than you ordered. I order the no. 4, 2 eggs, breakfast meat, and "magic toast." It comes with a third egg. A completely different sort of rowdy. There's a menu and there's a menu board. They're not the same which did lead to a little confusion for the folks in front of me. It's diner food and they do it well. I chose the chili, onions and cheddar omelet which comes with "magic toast." Back here again 10 months later than last time. I love the way this classic diner is decorated. Small town feeling as I saw the same group of older gentlemen in here as when I was here before. I had a nice plate of 3 over medium eggs , 2 crispy strips of well done bacon , and 2 slices of lightly buttered sour dough toast . I bought my friend the same items. He also got a coffee . They have good service here! The lady kept coming around asking if my friend wanted a fresh and hot refill on the coffee! Kind of can't believe that I've never given them a review before? There's nowhere in town I love more than the Hi Way. I take everyone who visits here. If I can't settle on what to do for dinner I come here. If I'm having a bad day I go here. It's always good, unbelievably cheap, very friendly, and so comforting. I will say they seem to have changed their pie supplier recently so that's a disappointment but other than that (which doesn't even knock them down a star rating, you'll note) I have not a bad word to say. I also added a pancake to my order. It was just the meal I needed for my Sunday brunch. Greasy and buttery perfection. The only part I didn't enjoy were the eggs as they were a little on the dry side. But the pancake? Huge and fluffy with crispy edges, just how it should be. Went in on a sunday at noon. You can usually expect any place at this time to be busy and cranky and they were very busy but not at all cranky. Line Moved fast, Order was taken fast with amazing service, a server from the back came and checked up on the cashier because it was a rush, asked them if they needed water or to take a break, which was nice to see. We went outside to sit and someone else had to chase us down about question on our order and they were even absolutely lovely. Our food came out fast and delicious, everything was perfect. First time here but I can definitely see why there was such a commotion when you guys went away with the 24/7 open service. We will definitely be back. Thank you guys for a great meal. read more
