The food itself was delicious, I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns. I haven't been able to stop thinking about the salty sausage gravy pairing with the hash browns. My husband has fond memories of the Hi-Way Diner, as he went to school at UNL and visited on many a morning after late nights "studying" in college. We happened to be in the Lincoln area for an event, and he begged to visit the Hi-Way Diner again to relive those memories he cherishes. It was pretty early in the morning, so a breakfast stop did sound pretty appealing to me. We popped in and the interior is pretty cute, with vintage signs and items scattered throughout. The look of the building is a little worse for wear, I will say, with musty carpets, fluorescent lighting, and a faded smell of a building that has been standing a while (which this has) along with the delicious smells of the food cooking. Ignoring the smells and sights, we stood in line to get a table. It was a Sunday when we were there, so very busy obviously. We were seated at a booth, and perused the menu. Let me tell you right now now, you do NOT come here for health food. It's either very heavy meaty options, or sweet pancakes and waffles. Because of the aforementioned heaviness of the fare, my husband and I decided to split two entrees and share the sides. I chose the South Street Meatloaf, and it tasted just like my mom used to make, with a ketchupy brown sugar glaze. My better half chose the Chicken Fried Chicken, and it was ENORMOUS. For our sides, we had mashed potatoes and corn, and those were pretty standard - nothing to write home about. We packed most of our entrees and sides away to take home, because my husband said we had to try the pancakes too! He got the standard pancakes and doused them in butter and blueberry syrup. Can't go wrong there. I got the Magic Toast and chose the French Toast flavor. It was very well battered and came with some delicious syrup to top it with. Highly recommend trying anything from the Magic Toast menu. Hi-Way Diner is definitely a hole in the wall style eatery, but it's worth a stop in Lincoln if you're looking for a tasty breakfast at a pretty affordable price! read more

Been going here for years usually once a week. Little diner like the old days. Laid back w/old time decorations. Old time/laid back atmosphere. Order at counter and they bring your food. After reading several rave reviews about Hi Way Diner, we decided to go there for breakfast. My friend ordered a steak fajita wrap. It was gross. The size was incredibly small and the contents looked like overcooked dog food..not steak. She ended up taking one bite and leaving it. I ordered eggs with crisp hasbrowns and a pancake. The hashbrowns were nit crisp. The egg was OK. But the pancake tasted like a Bisquick pancake. There is no atmosphere and very little service. I'll never go there again and I recommend you don't either. I cannot figure out how people rate this place as high as they do. read more

Stopped for lunch on our way through Lincoln. Wanted lunch fare in a quick restaurant style way. This was perfect. You order at the counter, find your table, then your meal is delivered to your table. We wanted a soup salad or soup half sandwich type lunch. They didn't have that on the menu, instead we ordered a full club sandwich with a cup of soup on the side plus an extra cup of soup, Wah-lah soup and half a sandwich for two. Sandwich was good. Lots of turkey, crispy bacon, fresh veggies. Soup was good as well, curly egg noodles and chicken. Refillable fountain soda as well so we got one for the road. So the process is walk up and request what one likes to have and special requests seem acceptable. Perfect! So I have asked for burned brown/black pancake and hash browns with 2 eggs over medium. I told my cousin about my love for local spots and he nailed with with the beautiful Hi-Way Diner, a longtime Lincoln staple. The breakfast was top notch American and the history is still alive. I had a classic two eggs with hash browns and meat breakfast and my bacon came perfectly crispy, as requested. The hash browns were browned to perfection and my daughter loved her half order of eggs Benedict. You order at the counter, pick up your utensils and sauces yourself, but don't let that fool you. Hi-Way Diner is a "home town" diner in a city. The ambiance is great, like it's something out of the 1950s -- Mayberry-ish. You enter, order your food and drinks, grab your silverware and sit down. No matter how busy they are, the food comes quickly. It's always more than you ordered. I order the no. 4, 2 eggs, breakfast meat, and "magic toast." It comes with a third egg. Back here again 10 months later than last time. I love the way this classic diner is decorated. Small town feeling as I saw the same group of older gentlemen in here as when I was here before. I had a nice plate of 3 over medium eggs , 2 crispy strips of well done bacon , and 2 slices of lightly buttered sour dough toast . I bought my friend the same items. He also got a coffee . They have good service here! The lady kept coming around asking if my friend wanted a fresh and hot refill on the coffee! If I can't settle on what to do for dinner I come here. If I'm having a bad day I go here. It's always good, unbelievably cheap, very friendly, and so comforting. I will say they seem to have changed their pie supplier recently so that's a disappointment but other than that (which doesn't even knock them down a star rating, you'll note) I have not a bad word to say. Nostalgic diner. I remember being a kid and stopping here to eat with my parents on the way to the west coast. So when I found myself driving through here with my young kids I decided we needed to stop. The food isn't horrible, for a diner it was fairly good. You order and pay at the register then your food is brought to your table. It's a quirky place with a bit of history. My kids loved the old reliques from the old stove, type writer and gas containers. I'm sure there are better places out there for food, but the memories in this place made it absolutely worth the stop. read more
