Blown away by dinner tonight. We come here a few times a year and it is always solid food and service but the special this week shows a step up from their solid good foot into excellence. I rarely do a second review unless something really notable happens and this deserves a call out. It was chicken cordon blue made from scratch with a delicious sauce on top. It was crispy and still moist. The sauce was brilliant and the cheese was so gooey. The homemade and quality result makes me think they are really growing here and deserve more frequent visits. read more

I've not been to many restaurants that consistently tantalize my taste buds but I honestly LOVE Cafe on the Square. I wish they were also located in Lincoln so I could visit more often. But if you're in Lincoln, yes, it's worth the drive! I returned for lunch again, this time with coworkers. I had the mac n cheese and it was incredible! It's cheesy, and homemade, and very rich. I think next time I'd enjoy it more as a side rather than an entree just because it's so heavy. It would go very well with their hand-battered, freshly cut chicken strips, which are equally as delicious. I do not like overly crispy, thick battered meats. These strips are done well. AND the best part is the mac n cheese and chicken strips that you order for adults, are the SAME for kids. No Kraft mac n cheese on this kids menu. I LOVE that! The mac n cheese also come with garlic bread (I know, carb overload) and it's also totally worth mentioning. It's also very yummy, with a soft inside and crispy outside. My coworker had the meatloaf, which I was able to try. It's also delicious. The meat was kind of crumbly, not because it's dry, it was a good, moist crumble. I love the texture. And that brown gray. It has chunks of fresh mushrooms in it. The gravy honestly, for me, took the dish to the next level. I love that the chef takes comfort food everyone knows and loves and adds his own touch to take it to the next level. Fresh ingredients, great textures, quality bread, etc. This is a cafe, but this is not your typical mom and pop diner fare. I noticed there were also some renovations since the last time I came. They took out one of the entrances/waiting areas and added a simple bar. There is also outdoor seating. I can't wait to go back and try something else. If you're in Seward and not going here, you must! Not only to support a small business, but because it's delicious!! read more

Wow. How did this very classy restaurant with great food end up in a small town like Seward? This beautiful place is worth the drive from Lincoln or Omaha on a nice weekend or evening drive. I had the chicken soup which was homemade and the chicken strips which were also homemade with their own dipping sauce. The atmosphere is very open with large windows on a corner store that lets in a lot of light. There's also many shops in close proximity to this cafe so spending a few hours in town would also be fun. Enjoy! read more

Working in my field, you get to see a lot of small towns and the gems of local food establishments. Cafe On The Square offers great food from burgers, to chicken fried steak. I can't speak for the burgers as I had chicken fried steak but my party of four was impressed with the quality of food and mine was no different. If drinking isn't your thing(alcohol) I strongly recommend the lemonade. It's absolutely delicious. The staff is chock full of smiles and great customer service. I will definitely be returning on my future visits to this town. read more

I want to start by saying I really wanted to like this place especially with new owners.... but it was a completely mess. First, on a Saturday afternoon this place was busy(great news!) but the smell was not of food - it literally smells like a horse barn. I kept getting the whiff and it never left. Gross. We ordered a patty melt, philly sand which and grilled cheese. All with fries. The good: 1. Our waitress was pleasant and great. The fries are legit. Yum 2. The bad: 1. A grilled cheese should include bread that has been grilled right? My tasteless sandwich was disabusing, soggy, and greasy. 2. Since when does a patty melt come with cheddar cheese? And another bummer on the soggy untoasted rye. 3. The steak sandwich was no better than meat from Walmart thrown on a hotdog bun. Not a fan. read more

I had the chance to stop in last night. After reading the Yelp reviews, I opted to give out a try..a few said good, a few said so-so, an one said bad. I think the so-so crowd wins. On the first look, you can see that they are trying to be a bit. nicer than a rural diner...call the decor, 'Upscale Prairie.' I ordered pork chops, green beans, and garlic potatoes. The best part was the beans...crisp, firm, with just the right amount of freshness. Next were the garlic mashed potatoes, which were hot and garlicky...they also had texture that was just right. The dinner roll was also warm and just right. The price was also reasonable. NOW for the negative.. Service was slow and distracted. I came for dinner, and when I needed my waitress for more water, she was busy on sidework or giving a detailed descriptionof her trip to Bolivia....I was concerned that she was going to break out slides, complete with a picture of the Spanish Inquisition... (Let's pause while I look around because NOBODY expects...) OKAY.... My last concern were my pork chops...they were pretty thin and dry...while flavorful, it still took away from things....Ii would suggest either having one thicker chop and not overcooking as much..also, how about even a small side of apple sauce? I ate at this small town cafe a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty decent, and probably as good as it gets in Seward. There were 4 of us and we came here on a Saturday over lunch. The place was packed and we had to wait about 25 minutes for a table. The atmosphere is nice and homey. There is exposed brick, antiques and collectibles on the walls, and a nice tin ceiling. It's a very pleasant space. The food was okay. Nothing knock out, but nothing particularly bad. I had the patty melt which they had added their own twist to. They sprinkle Parmesan cheese on the bread and it gives the sandwich a unique flavor and a bit of crunch. The rest of the patty melt was okay. It didn't have sauteed onions on it like it stated on the menu (and how a patty melt is supposed to be), instead it had raw, red onions. The french fries were your typical frozen crinkle fries. The service was friendly but a bit slow. They were very busy and in the middle of lunch rush, so this is excusable. I'd say, if you're passing through, go ahead and stop. It's decent food and better than the fast food joints around. read more

We sat outside and were able to watch trains go by on the Union Pacific transcontinental route, which was nice added bonus. Was very impressed with the variety of selections on the menu - everything from salads to pastas to burgers and sandwiches. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Had Cafe cater to our basketball team 23 sandwiches and sides. Lacey was great to work with, clear and constant communication and pleasant to deal with. The food was all sandwiches and not your run of the mill sandwich. All were nice big toasted bread and real, great, fresh ingredients. Lots of flavor and overall a great experience. Teenage boys made lots of comments that they were glad that we didn't get subway because these sandwiches were WAY better! Totally unorganized and unprepared for the eclipse visitors. They say common sense isn't common. How about not thinking altogether. It seems they have a captive college crowd to keep them running. So it starts out they have no busser for the tables. No flatware on any tables, including after the food is served. So walking dead waiter takes the time to wrap it in a napkin and seal it, then give it to the people waiting. I was first in line and a large booth opens up and and I see a party of 5 and offer it to them. Brain dead waitress gives it to the next 2 people and the larger party gets to huddle at a table for 4. So much for good intentions. I'm seeing this madness unfold, I'm not even awake yet and inside I'm losing my shit. I order the veggie omelette minus the peppers, I was told they didn't have broccoli to sub even though it was listed someplace on the menu. Then we both witness the same idiocy with the utensils at another table. Had to roll them up too. I asked for ours before we got served.I love quiche, good thing I didn't order it, it's a skimpy piece, the omelette wasn't much bigger. If you need breakfast in Seward, and are downtown, wait till 11 and go to the Chinese buffet down the street. The only downer on this trip. Then on the news it was announced not to drink the water in Seward. read more

I don't have too much to say because all of it is really good! The vibe? Great--the bricks and how it looks out on the town square are great. Also, everything on the menu looked REALLY good, and obviously my food was, too (French Toast if you're curious). Finally, even for a dead time of day, the service was blisteringly fast.
