I have always liked Toast! Interesting menu, friendly service. Very cool outdoor space in the warmer months.

Eh..... long wait times on a sunday morning more than what we have been promised. Nice vibe though. Food over priced in my opinion. Maybe 3.5 starts. read more

Cute place with fast service. Has an eclectic vibe that matches the Birmingham area. I ordered a mimosa, over easy eggs and avocado toast (because I am so hipster). Really simple so pretty hard to mess up, but still good. The avocado on top was a little browner than I would like. I'll come back and try something else. read more

I went to Toast for the first time to film a short video about the restaurant, needless to say this was the first of many visits to Toast! The place looks great, it has a big city feel but at the same time makes you feel right at home. The shoot went great, the owner Thom was a nice guy that really has a passion to run a great business and put out a quality product everyday with every dish. The customers were also a lot of fun. Once I was finished with the shoot a young couple invited me to have lunch with them! How often does that happen? I hit the jackpot when I ordered "The Joint" and a Pabst Blue Ribbon! Toast made my day! Here is a link to the video I produced: http://toscanomedia.com/?p=98 read more

Hmm I am torn between a 3 and a 4 JUSt because this location doesn't have the to die for banana coffee that ferndale has! I don't understand it, it's one of my main reasons for going to Ferndale toast when I do so when we have gone here the few times we have and they don't have and don't seem to plan to carry that tasty coffee I'm bummed :(. Overall though great breakfast food, a bit on the pricy side but definitely. Always great service and friendly staff. read more

When we arrived I was unsure. I overheard the waiter was being quadruple-sat. I was patient, I've been here before. The food is great. Another server came, we ordered drinks. After a reasonable wait we hit the apps. Drinks and the restaurant week menu. This is where is need to pause. Say what you will about the hipster decor and Converse high tops, but, as a restaurant, this is about food. The endive salad, the short rib...the salmon....even during restaurant week when business is a given and the price is fixed, what is your motivation? All I have to say is WOW! I have been around the block and this place does food. The beef was rich, tender, and amazing. The salmon can and should only be ordered with the pork belly (sorry my Hebrew friends). For dessert I wanted some scotch, and after 10 minutes with the front house manager I ended up with a triple mixed drink of smokey greatness. In the end- I am rarely overwhelmed and amazed. Point, set, match Toast! read more

We did a call ahead reservation at 10:52am, for TWO people and told that there would be a half hour wait. It is now 11:54am and we still have not been seated. Nobody has asked us if we'd like anything after we've now waited over an hour. And the odd thing is, the outdoor patio has five or six tables open. When I asked the host what the holdup was since there were clearly open tables, I was told that "the kitchen is backed up, so we can't seat anyone". You've got to be kidding me. You have customers who have been waiting for an hour, and you can't at least offer them a place to sit after standing around?? Your best option is to wait until the kitchen congestion clears?? What a terribly managed establishment. This place is an embarrassment to downtown Birmingham, which is filled with such excellent dining options. We've been here before and the food is pretty good (although pricey for what you get), which is what keeps it from getting one star. With such great options in Birmingham, don't bother with Toast. read more

I've been thinking about starting reviewing restaurants for a while now, and after eating at Toast in Birmingham, MI, I decided to take the plunge, for many great reasons. My girl and I were boppin' around Birmingham passing time as we were going to see a movie later that night and we decided to have some dinner. I'm a huge seafood fan, so I spied Streetside Seafood, made a B-line for it, sat down relatively quickly, asked for a draught list, was informed that there was no draught list only bottled beer, was also recommended a beer with 'rose hips', got up, went to Toast. Got to toast and was immediately more at ease than the stuffy, super WASPy Streetside. The place reminded me of my Grandmother's basement in terms decor, but was super clean. Our waiter was a baller, he gave you straight up answers, let you know what you were getting yourself into, and cracked good well-timed jokes.....we were off to a good start. We had: -the mushroom appetizer (which is different day to day, as I understood it) with sourdough toast, warm red cabbage slaw/salad, a type of mushroom I can't remember, plenty of garlic and seasonings, and an poached egg.....and I'll lemme tell you, I'm a huge sucker for eggs in non-breakfast dishes. Anyhow, the thing was off the chain. The girl and I were throwing bows to get at it first, and I almost ordered another one. -steak frites with truffle fries. The steak was a really nice cut, nice portion, was cooked perfectly (medium rare. It really grinds my gears when I order a steak medium rare and the chef takes it upon himself to redefine medium rare as medium or medium well, but enough griping). They decided to sauce that slab of heaven with some kind of red wine sauce, which I guess is fine, but not my style......let the meat speak for itself. That cut was really nice and needed no frills to make it sing. However, as far as sauces go, I concede that it was pretty delicious. The fries were good not exceptional, not overly truffle-y or salty, no further comment. -red snapper with bacon fried cabbage salad. Hell yeah. Like I said, I'm a big fish lover so I was immediately sold when our boy, Marco, told us about the special. This dish is exactly what you look for when you want to order fish. The fish was seasoned and cooked right-the-f-on. These fish are easily overcooked and this one was done to perfection, it did the fish true justice, because it was utterly amazing. Mix that with the warm cabbage salad infused with bacon flavor, giving the thin broth wisps of bacon, acidity, and somekind of sweetness. You have yourself a true winner here; Kudos to that chef. Toast, You get 5/5 stars because you gave us a 5 star meal at a 3 star price, and I wouldn't change a thing about how the meal was executed. I'm sure Streetside is great, but that snapper was too legit to quit. read more

Other than being over-priced and always busy - I'm a fan of Toast! The dishes are interesting and delicious though I've only ever gone for breakfast. It's the kind of place to go when you don't want your run-of-the-mill diner/coney breakfast options. I've had most of their food and the only thing I found kind of disappointing was the eggs benedict. The staff has always been friendly and even if the food doesn't come out super-fast - it isn't too bad of a wait, typically. I take my niece her every year for our birthday and it's become our tradition - she's just as much of a fan. Go early though or you're going to have a preposterously long wait. read more

Great place for a somewhat expensive breakfast. Can't seem to escape 'priceyness' that in this area (!). I'm not made of money and I can cook at home. So, if I pay for prepared food -- particularly in an upscale place -- I expect value for my dough. Toast is cool & hip; kitschy decor and well-crafted, eclectic (but plenty of ol' stand-bys) meals. I guess you *HAVE* to have the French toast but I still haven't after a few visits. I don't really care for it. So there! They have a cranberry/nut/bacon/feta omelette that is to die for, though. Friendly service and staff, but be prepared to wait 30-60 minutes if busy. Bring your appetite, their portions are generous. read more

The Birmingham toast location is much better than the Ferndale one in my opinion. The menu is great, challa French toast with lemon cream is like no other. They have all flavors for mimosas (though I wish they weren't $10+ a piece) and they are tasty. My only pointer would be that the servers aren't very friendly or attentive and the tables can feel a bit crammed. Other than that, I've never had a bad meal there. read more

One star is too high. I honestly don't think we have ever eaten at a more poorly run restaurant. This is the second time we have eaten here in the past month. The first time we were there a month ago, our food never came after sitting there for 30-40 minutes. The waitress hardly ever checked on us, kept making excuses for the kitchen and ultimately told us that she never put our order in. Ok, one time. I could forgive that. However, I have also carried out from there since then twice. The first time, they made my order wrong. I didn't say anything. The second time, the order still wasn't ready after an hour and I ended up sitting in my car waiting. I was hungry by that time so again I said nothing and decided I wasn't going back. Today is Father's Day and my husband decided we would go there since there was a long wait at pancake house. We were literally the first people seated in the restaurant, arriving at 7:45 and waiting patiently. Forty minutes later, every person seated near us had received their order. Half of our order arrived, minus the side dishes. Our kids still did not have food. We asked our waitress multiple times what was going on, she had no idea. She arrived with a cinnamon bun as an apology which we did not want and did not accept. Still no food for my kids except for a side of sausage. The waitress announced the meal was on them. Finally the manager comes walking up with my kids food, 45 minute into arriving. We told him this isn't acceptable, this is the second time in a month this has happened. He didn't listen, he told us to to just leave and then as we were walking out literally told my husband that we are terrible people. He also insulted my looks. I have been to many restaurants in my life, I have never seen a manager as unprofessional as this man is. My husband is a a cancer physician, he performs radiation on people and is highly regarded by everybody who has ever met him. If somebody could instigate my husband enough to make him say "fuck you", that person must be absolutely despicable. The most unbelievable part is that the manager of this restaurant actually said "fuck you too" right back at him. I've never heard that in my entire life from a manager. In addition, I will add that I am a physician as well and have never insulted somebody's looks or called them a terrible person to their face for any reason, even when they are rude to me or don't agree with me. This occurred simply because we didn't appreciate the poor service in a restaurant in the middle of a high end area such as birmingham. I have never written a review like this, I am not on social media and it's not really my style. However I felt this needed to be put out there. I don't think I have ever seen my husband so infuriated. I realize that people will continue going to this bat shit crazy place despite this review, there are few breakfasts places in the area. My only hope is that this manager realizes how despicably and unprofessionally he has acted, he needs to do some real soul searching and look in the mirror himself. read more

I would give this establishment an extra 1/2 star, but nothing really stood out to me as astonishing. The decor is eclectic and "cool", but the food is not memorable. As in, after dining here at least 3 times with friends in the last year, I can't remember anything really standing out to me as extraordinary. And looking at the menu, which is comprised of pretty basic American cuisine, you can't really go wrong with anything they serve. Nonetheless, their brunch is pretty good, the atmosphere is energetic, the service is decent, and the food that they served during Birmingham's Restaurant Week was nice. read more

This review if for the Hostess ONLY. The food & service we had from our waitress was GREAT! A couple weeks ago my family & I were visiting from out of town & decided to head here on a Saturday morning. When we arrived we were told our wait would be 20/25 minutes. I tell my husband who says we'll have to pay the meter more later so we paid close attention to the time. We were a party of 6 including 3 small children that could handle that wait time so we stuck it out seeing how delicious the food looked on the Yelp reviews. Plus they had a Disney movie playing on a tv so our kids were occupied while we looked over the menu. Fast forward to 40 minutes later & we've yet to be seated. I ask the hostess how much longer & she state another 15 minutes or so. At this point the kids are starting to get restless. Again, I return back to the hostess stand & get told we still have to wait. At this point I'm pretty much upset & tell them their timing is horrible & had I know it would be an hour I would have gone else where. She proceeded to tell me the table they were waiting to seat us at is still sitting & they are trying to move them along. She said there was nothing the manager or them could do & that we would just have to wait. When I told her we now would have feed our meter 2 times she stated "you would have had to feed your meter anyway". Who says that to a costumer who has a large party what could potentially spend a lot of money? Then she states she can sit us at a high top which I tell her would not work since we needed 1 high chair. The hostess keep pushing for us to go "check out" the high top & that she had a high chair tall enough. What part of "no" 3 times do you NOT understand. After waiting another 10 minutes another hostess informs us that they are clearing the table. We are told the manger will be out to talk with us. Guess what the manager has to say...."we're getting your table ready now" That's it's? Your 3 other hostesses just told us the same thing. we are finally seated handed our menus, apologized to & told "there are a lot of working parts to a restaurant". I'm sorry but that's no excuse for getting your timing off. I've worked in plenty of restaurants to know you can hold smaller tables instead of turning a bunch of them in order to accommodate larger parties. Again, asides from that the food lived up to the hype & our waitress was great. read more

YUM! This place was quaint and hip and pretty yummy! I was tempted by the mimosa options but resisted as I had to go to work after (boo!). I went with a make-your-own omelette, as did my company. The omelette were delicious and I suspect they were baked, so that was amazing. They are so much fluffier when baked, I just love it. I opted for the Asiago toast and thought it was absolutely divine, while my friend had the jalapeño cheddar which she says she always gets because she loves it. I opted for home fries, while she got bacon fried rice. Let me say that again...BACON FRIED RICE. Omg, I died and went to bacon heaven, but decided one bite of her food was enough and managed to stop myself. My home fries were ok, but I only took a few bites because everything else was so amazing. We shared a side of delicious bacon. I also stole a drink from her banana-coffee-French-press-something-something. Even with cream/sugar, it was still a little bitter for me and the banana was almost too strong of a flavor, but she looooves it so...different strokes ya know. The price was reasonable for being a trendy place in downtown Birmingham. Overall, 2 thumbs up. read more

Great establishment! The mimosas are outstanding! Wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world

Great food and love the banana coffee. Been many times and have never been disappointed.

toast is such a comfy brunch spot that is usually pretty busy on weekends. if you're coming to the birmingham location, use the nowait app to add your name to the waitlist before you arrive. this is especially great for people like me who don't like to wait ridiculous times for breakfast spots. however, i must say that toast moves pretty quick and efficiently to get everyone seated in a timely manner. it's so hard to choose between sweet and savory here, this weekend they had a pound cake french toast special that sounded amazing, however i decided to go with the chicken and waffles benny. the benny was excellent however i asked for scrambled eggs and still got poached eggs anyway. which was no biggie. the potatoes they serve with it are perfectly seasoned and cooked thoroughly! adding a side of cinnamon challah toast gave my meal the perfect amount of sweetness it needed. definitely check this place out and get one of their many flavored mimosas while you wait for your food to come out :) read more

Wait is always super long for brunch on weekends so you know it's good. I opted to get an omelette with spinach onion and feta. It was delicious. Came with a side of toast and either potatoes or grits. I asked for grits, but got potatoes when it came out. No big deal it was still good. Place is super loud so hard to hear people at your own table talk. Also the tables are super close together. read more

Took my wife here for brunch and I was so amazed at the charm, and character of this little restaurant. Bloody Marry was outstanding, and food was original, fresh, and worth the wait. Every time I eat here I'm underwhelmed. It's probably the best breakfast place in the area, but there isn't much else to choose from. It's no Rochester Brunch House. The coffee mugs are cool. Great place just wish they had some vegan options for some pancakes and waffles. I love their cannoli French toast. Love the cute little design of the place. Otherwise, definitely check this place out, you'll be going back! read more

Traditionally when I go here for breakfast or brunch the food is always great. However, my last 3 experiences here have been far less than great. The last time I was there the waitress took 10 min to greet us, and then she asked for our drink orders and comes back 10 min later without our drinks. After that debacle, we ordered our food which also took a long time to get it and of course the orders were both wrong and the food was hardly even warm. Very disappointed because I used to like going here. read more

I should have walked out as soon as I walked in. The smell of damp mildewed upholstery greeted me at the door. But I decided to give it a chance. I was seated next to a table of 4-5 women that were EXTREMELY LOUD. I changed my seat. I ordered the hash and it was too salty, had too much pepper and the potatoes were mushy and oily. TERRIBLE!! I do not recommend this place on any level. The only reason I gave it one star is because the waitress was pleasant and the toast was good. read more

My review is about the dinner menu, so please read other reviews if you want to know about the brunch experience. I found myself quite disappointed at the dinner menu because I was hoping this place would be selling their popular brunch items all day and focus on brunch (they are called, Toast, after all). The only brunch item on the dinner menu was the chicken and waffles. It was my mistake for not looking at their dinner menu online, but I find it to be a strange branding decision. The food was ok, but lacked in flavor for the price point. The chicken and waffles my boyfriend got were very plain and needed salt (which was not on the table). It tasted good, but I was expecting more flavor or something more unique for the price point. It came with mashed potatoes that had, I believe, little to no seasoning. It just tasted like potato and maybe some milk. I got the tacos, and they were also just ok. I was told they would be spicy but didn't find that to be the case, they were a little on the dry side. The best things we got were the flatbread dippers. They actually had some unique and tasty sauces! This appetizer left me hoping for even better flavors in the entrees but I was left disappointed. The atmosphere is quite nice and I sat outside. There are cute shops nearby and the street isn't too busy. read more

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Toast is always a sure thing when in Birmingham.

Since I been here a couple times before and enjoyed it, I recommended it for Sunday brunch this past Sunday and was excited for everyone to try it. The wait was a hour which is longer than I have ever waited. Then we get seated and the server was nice and attentive. We ordered waters and 2 coffees, then for the meals we had the Birmingham omelette - the sauerkraut, trashy hash, and toast hash, which came out quickly. The problem didn't occur till after we ate our food. Two of us were back and forth to the bathroom and the third thought we were making it up till he heated up the leftovers and ate them later in the day causing him the same problem as we had earlier. None of us had the same thing and all of us had the same problem. Not sure what it was but defiantly won't be risking it again. read more

Place is amazing! while we were waiting to be seated, they had time magazines, Netflix of 1950's shows or movies, and very comfy waiting seats. Awesome service and very polite and respectful waiters and waitresses. Food was amazing! The food came out quick and I got the chicken and waffle Benny and it was so delicious definitely coming back again! read more

Would give it 3.5 stars but as Yelp doesn't do half stars I went with the lower end of the spectrum. The wait was good at only about 15 minuets considering how busy the restaurant was. The service sucked and the place is super noisy so don't expect a nice quiet breakfast experience. The positives; cool stylish restaurant with a creative menu. It is a bit on the pricey side so you expect the food to amaze you. I got the chicken and waffle with bacon fried rice, good however it did not blow me away considering the price tag. The all star for me was the toast, the jalapeño cheddar challah break was phenomenal. Will be back at least one more time to try the chilaquiles. read more

Been here several times for drinks at night and just went there for breakfast today. They have some interesting french toast options and a lot of standard omelets.
