I am in town visiting. I used to live in Virginia 4 years ago and back for the holiday. I LOVED this place before I left. I used to go to the hookah bar on the corner and that's how I discovered it. Now that I am out of state I have had such a hard time finding a good papusa place!!! I had to order it while I was in town. I was not disappointed at all. They're even better than I remembered. I do not order any of the tacos or anything like that so I cannot speak to it. I'm sure they're good if the papusas are this good. I ordered, bean & cheese, 2 chicken, 2 pork. (Obviously not all for me) Then I ordered a side of rice, beans, and chips & salsa. I forgot how big the papusas were. I ate a chicken one and was so full!!! My favorite spot for a pupusa craving! We have only ordered takeout from here but the pupusas are hot, cheesy and perfect each time. I love the little spicy curtido it comes with - always fresh and tasty. The tacos are very flavorful, particularly the chorizo! The wrap is a bit thicker than what I'm used to but I love the simplicity of it all. El Salvadoran. Typical menu. Fairly priced. As English speakers we had no problem. All the wait staff were perfectly bilingual. Our waitress was excellent. Very rude staff, las time we came with my family and we wanted to stay a little longer than usual. After 10:30 they were kicking us out because my siblings and I are underaged and they "don't allow minors." They never specified that after 11pm minors weren't allowed. They should at least tell you beforehand and not tell you to leave out of the blu. read more

I came to Tipicos los Amigos to spend a good time with my family. We use to come and they would let us go in even though we are under age but with marks to prevent us from going to the bar. Last time I went they kick us out telling us that we were not allowed to be there because we were under age. Came here for the first time a couple days ago. The service was alright, we got seated pretty quickly but our waiter only checked on us about three times (counting when he took our order and gave our bill). It seemed like he was busy giving his attention to other customers & sitting with them and pulling his mask down. If i could give a zero i would. Worst place ever. My friend and i went in for lunch and it took the server over 20 minutes to greet us. After we ordered our drinks, it took another fifteen minutes to get. The margaritas were nasty. Because we weren't Spanish, we were not treated well. This place was a great choice for an affordable, filling dinner Sat night!! Be forewarned, however, that the tables were completely full. This is a GREAT indication that the food is awesome, but bad because there is a wait. Fortunately, my friend and I were able to snag a table at the bar side (left side). My friend recommended the tacos, so I ordered the lengua (tounge), and "Taco Rockero" (chorizo, pork, carne asada). They were $3-4 each. Both were delicious. Although the corn tortilla was thicker than what I was used to at other restaurants, it effectively held together the hearty, meaty ingredients. They do NOT skimp out on the meat here! Tomatoes (chopped) and a mild green sauce came on the side to customize the order to your liking. The flavors all worked together perfectly! My girl friend also ordered guacamole and chips, which were surprisingly really good. The guacamole tasted freshly made, and the light chips complimented the appetizer very well. We also shared a bean and cheese pupusa, in which I recommend for a cheap eat! It was only $3 and we were able to split it into four pieces. She took the rest home. Overall, I have to mention the service was super slow in getting our food out... I could overlook this, because the food was delicious, cheap, and filling. We really liked our meals here. The pupusas with pickled cabbage were outstanding. I've had a few pupisas over the years and these were the best by far. Not greasy. I speak fluent Spanish and the waitress had a hard time understanding me. I wanted to order food and eat outside. She got confused and thought I wanted table service. I went outside to wait...and wait...and wait. I went back inside. She had forgotten about me. She put together my order so quickly the hot food burned a hole through the styrofoam plate and the rice was falling through the hole. I gave her my credit card. 15 min later a random customer asked me if this credi card she was holding belonged to me. It did. How did she get it? The waitress had given her my credit card and the woman was about to drive away and realized the card was not hers. I left a tip because I always do, but I won't ever go back there. They first sat us at a booth with a TON of food and grease leftover from the previous people on the seats. We quickly moved to another slightly less dirty table on our own. The waitress had a lot of trouble understanding super basic menu orders in English, which is fine! But we were pointing at menu items and still didn't get what we ordered. What a pleasant surprise last weekend! Good Tex Mex at reasonable prices! We moved to VA from Texas and have not found a good Tex-Mex restaurant in the area. We hear the recommendations of friends only to be disappointed at the food or the prices. My wife and I were looking for somewhere to eat and saw this restaurant that was busy - so we thought we would give it a try. The salsa and chips were tasty and crisp! My wife ordered the steak fajitas ($13.25) and I ordered the shrimp fajitas ($14.50). The food was excellent and plentiful, with plenty of tortillas. The fajitas also came with guacamole, sour cream and jalepenos as part of the price - which is a nice surprise in this area. The waitress was pleasant although having lived in Texas - our limited spanish was helpful in ordering. We also tried the margaritas - on the rocks and frozen - both were priced fairly! Tried their Taco Rockero and Chicken taco today and I'm officially in love! The sauce that comes with it had great spice and flavor. The Rockero had pork, chorizo and beef I believe. It was slightly oily but it tasted really absolutely delicious! They have a bar and television screens to watch games. It was a little dark on the inside though, but the atmosphere wasn't too bad. No numbered dishes, no lunch combo specials, no pictures of tacos to remind idiots what tacos are. This place is legit. The papusas are all about $2 and they are HUGE. This one was a bit of a toughie. I did takeout, so I can't speak on service, but i will say before saying anything else that the food was very flavorful, incredibly so, in fact. I have to agree that it is just slightly pricey for what you get in terms of entrees compared to other places. For the salpicon ($11), you get a butt load of rice, probably a whole plantain's worth of maduros, and about scant cup of salpicon. Not what you expect for Central American restaurants in terms of portion, but not terrible. What makes me give three stars instead of four is two things: 1. the rice is like the kind you get out of the box with dried peas and carrots and seasoning mixed in it--very low quality. What absolutely impressed me was the quality of the homestyle tortillas. I am all about a good, thick, homemade tortilla. These, although a little short on salt, were the tenderest tortillas I've had and that's comparing to the amazing Nicaraguan ones I tried at all of the Nica places in Miami. Also, the beans were incredibly flavorful as well. I was very impressed with these two items. Besides the rice, the other downfall was that the salpicon (shredded beef with radish (I hate radish, but it kills in this dish), onions, herbs, and loads of lime), although perfect in flavor, was a bit on the dry side. The meat was definitely overcooked. For those who may be a little confused, this place is Salvadorian all day long--sopa de res, pupusas, sopa de gallina, etc, but they have some other mixes, such as Lomo Saltado (Peru) and others. The Mexican part is mostly to attract people unfamiliar with Salvadorian food. It's true that if you like Tex Mex, you'd like Salvadorian. If you have any doubts on whether I'm telling the truth on it being Salvadorian rather than Mx, the proof that this place is Salvadorian more than anything is in the beans. Don't expect the mild, light brown pintos used in Tex Mex, here they use the much stronger in flavor Central American small red beans. Overall, if I was already in the area, I'd go back to try the sopa de gallina, the pupusas, or the sopa de res, or even to give the salpicon another shot. read more

Except for the service itself, food definitely exceeded my expectations. We went on a Sunday for lunch and this place was so crowded with locals. We ordered two entrees, steak burrito which came with rice, quac, lettuce and beans and chicken fajita. Chicken fajita wasn't as good, I thought it was really blend and could use more reasoning but everything was super fresh and can tell nothing they served was frozen.
