Tipico's food is very good. It is the closest you will get to authentic Mexican food in Dallas. They also also have the typical tex-mex like Enchiladas. Best authentic Mexican food in Dallas. I come here multiple times, every time I am back visiting the area. Food is always consistent and delicious. Portions are very generous, and I don't think prices have changed substantially in the 15+ years I've been dining there (they are very fair/low). Just writing this review is making me crave some good mole, or carnitas, or chilaquiles...the list goes on. I can't wait until I'm back in the Dallas area. We ordered Huevos Rancheros, Flautas, a gordita de fajitas and a taco of Carne Guisada. Everything was great! Came with homemade tortillas. A word of caution...... Not the greatest mexican food. Not authentic Mexican food but the decor of the restaurant is. The food is more like tex-mex. The appetizer chips were very greasy. My husband ordered a guiso; it was pretty good but not spicy (TEXMEX) and came with homemade tortillas but they weren't the greatest. I ordered chicken enchiladas not what I expected (ALL TEXMEX) nothing but melted yellow and white cheese all over the tortillas. Luckily I also ordered gorditas and those were bombing... Its hard to find a great family-owned mexican food place in DFW among all the chain restaurants, but Tipicos seems to be a good one! Hubby loved that they serve breakfast all day, and I really enjoyed my lunch too - enchilada plate with a small scoop of guacamole on the side. The chips and salsa were great, and I particularly loved the rice. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that the flour tortillas were a little hard and oily. I am a disabled person. I'm not able to walk for too long before I get winded so I take small steps and rest for a bit to catch my breath and strength. My sister who is also disabled needed to seat down and rest our legs for a moment. The benches that are inside and outside were occupied so we just looked for something to seat down immediately until I caught my breath and strength. Gerrardo came up to me talking loud so that everyone could hear that he can talk to the customer any way he wants too. He was rude and arrogant. He yelled out that I needed to get up now because there were customers waiting to be seated. I told him that I needed to catch my breath for just a moment. I was trying to tell him about my condition but he rudely talked over me and told me to get off now. He would not hear my pleas that if I got up quickly I could fall and it was going to be on him for not letting me catch my breath. He said to get out now and I don't care about your condition. I had my walker with me so it takes me a little bit to get up and walk. I have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetic, troble breathing and Lupus. He just got more ugly and told me to leave now that he will not serve me and I tried to tell him I'm getting off the chair and that I understood that others were there before me but once again Gerardo yelled over me and threaten to call the police. I told him many times to stop talking to me but he would not stop yelling at me. I told him to give me his name and he did but he continued to yell at me when I was already outside going towards my car. I told a couple of people that were about to go in that Gerardo was being very rude and to be careful of his rath. Gerardo must think just because he is related in some way to the owners he can talk and do what he wants. I've enjoyed going to Tipicos but this man acted a fool and my interest in going back to Tipicos has been damaged. read more

If you have never heard of this joint, it's no surprise. The Northwest Highway is slathered with Mexican places and I dont know how someone would choose just one. The way we found it was such: We bought a car from a hispanic guy off Harry Hines, meanwhile we were asking him his favorite places to eat around there, and he said that everyone goes to Tipico's. So we cruised by and it was PACKED. And it has been everytime I go there. This little gem is a wonderful lunch spot. It's a seat-yourself, pay-at-the-counter after your done, DIRT-CHEAP mexican joint. We are nearly always the only non-Hispanic folks there, and the people who know-GO. The service is really great. They hardly ever speak English though, so don't expect any long explanations about their food if you don't know Spanish. But , now the food. Everything I have had is exceptional. The beef enchiladas are great, the beans are way above average. But to me the two stand outs are 1. The warm, stewwed salsa. I have not had this anywhere else, but it is great. I tried to ask how they made it and all I could understand was "tomatoes, peppers, and hot". But it is really good and totally different. And 2. The carne guisada burritos- Simple but packed with flavor. Imagine your grandma's slow-cooked pot roast, with a few potatoes in a soft homemade tortilla. Exceptional. Noticed this place was the busiest out of most mexican restaurants on this street. I walked in and it smelled like a greasy spoon joint. Those places turn me off but with the amount of people here I just sucked it up and decided to not walk out. The waitstaff was nice and spoke enough english to understand. They were on top of keeping the place clean to make up for the grease smell. The tap water tasted a little grimy next time ill order a bottle of coke and they sent out chips with two types of salsa/verde one was hot temperature wise and spicy homeade. I ordered the beef caldo de res soup which had a good broth flavor but the beef was chewy and tough.. really authentic they gave me a side of rice which was really authentic and homeade. I also ordered a barbacoa corn taco it was so yummy and tasted real authentic lots of juicyness. And they had some mexican guy in the restaurant playing his guitar and singing mexican hits at lunch. He sang two songs and left. I left stuffed and satisfied under nine bucks for lunch plus tip. This is a very good place. Contrary to others, I found the food to not be greasy. The chips were fantastic and I would assume are house made from scratch. The Monday enchilada special is off the hook. The soups are some of the best in town. I happen to prefer dark meat from the chicken especially when used in soup or other forms of stews. It can cook longer and stay moist. The meats are marinated, moist and tender. You have to get there early for lunch as this is a very popular spot. Went here because other choice was closed in Sunday's and I'm glad we went. Get ready to wait because this is the place for Mexican food in the area. It's small and parking is challenging but get there early or after the lunch crowd and you will be glad you did. The service is not awful but it's slow but you are there for the authentic food and not the ambiance or service. No wifi or hard liquor and no frills. The tables are very close to each other so you feel like you are packed in but again, it's worth it. They offer authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices and they do breakfast all day. I went with the chorizo and eggs and it comes with beans (very good) and potatoes. They bring you homemade flour or corn tortillas and the plate is large and filling. The chips (a little stale and greasy) but the salsas are good and very spicy. First of all this place is filthy. The tortillas were good but the barbacoa had an off taste. The rice and beans are similar quality to what you would find at a a typical fast food place. The "queso" was some glop that probably came from a giant can - just partially warmed velveeta. No peppers or other seasoning.
