My other half ordered and picked up the food. He's had it before but this was my first time. We ordered the burrito, fish tacos, and chips w/ guacamole. The tacos were a generous portion and tasted good! I was thrilled when he asked for no cilantro the order was accurate (harder to do than one would think). Nice to have more Mexican food options on this side of the island. Hopefully this place lasts a long time as the restaurants in this shopping complex change often. Very happy to see a new tex-mex / Mexican spot in Hawaii Kai. Located in conjunction with Tex 808, where Phoenix Chinese Restaurant used to be. It's on the right side, while Tex 808 exists on the left side. Kinda glanced at the reviews but decided to try it just 'cause. I think my inner Mexican-loving-foodie had a hunch it was going to be good because I was extremely satisfied. Firstly, they have 2 kiosk screens to order on. While others commented how not ordering from a person takes away from the experience, I believe it made the process way more efficient. Remember, YOU can choose how YOU want to order at the tip of your fingers. No miscommunication or attitude from customer service. This is very smart, and I think more restaurants should be this way. Save money on labor and focus on dishing out food faster! On to the food. I got the burrito and holy goodness, "it was huge" (she said)! There was so much carnitas meat, as well as other fillings. Carnitas wasn't very salty nor dry. It was moist and well-seasoned. I got the lettuce, tomatoes, and a few other things as my choices for fillings. It all went very well together! It also came with chips and salsa. The chips were very crunchy, and had like a slight sweetness - I can't put my finger on it but it was delicious. The salsa was also great, as it tasted extremely fresh. This was so complimentary to the burrito. Cost is $14, as of 9/2024. The burrito fed me for two meals, and not because I saved it, but because it was perfectly sized to feed two (moderate eaters). I think I found a gem in Hawaii Kai. We are always on the lookout for good Mexican food since my husband is Mexican and from California. We saw this place opened down the street from where we live, so we had high hopes! We weren't too hungry, but we wanted to try it out, so we got an order of chips and salsa, a large guacamole, and 1 carnitas taco 1 carnitas taco was $5.. which is pretty pricey. We opened the box to eat it as soon as we got it, and it was a soggy mess :( there was only 1 corn tortilla, and it was cold, while the carnitas and the rest of the filling tasted watery. The taco was so soggy, it was impossible to pick it up to eat it The chips were pretty good, but they forgot my salsa. The guacamole was decently priced ($8 for an 8oz container), but it was very bland and tasted like the "fake" guacamole you get at grocery stores :( Also, on the menu, they had "aguas frescas", but the pictures on the kiosks show that they were actually jarrito sodas - definitely not aguas frescas lol I am hoping that they are still working things out since they are relatively new, so I gave them 1 extra star to give them the benefit of the doubt. The birria burrito was nasty served with a side of consume that had a thick layer of oil, to where you couldn't taste the broth, and "Mexican" rice that they pretty much cooked with orange oil from the consume and called it a day. The burrito was fried but the oil seemed to be old based on how daaaaaark brown it was. One side had some meat and the other was mostly just onions. It's like they take the brisket from Tex 808 then soak it in the nasty consume and put it in a tortilla. I don't like leaving 1 stars, but diners be aware. I ate it bc I didn't want my family to feel bad having dinner with them, but the process was painful and I didn't feel that great when I got home. I had the California burrito, the one with brisket. Let's start with the positive. It was definitely a large burrito. I was pretty hungry but I wasn't able to finish it all. You will definitely want to moderate your expectations and appreciate it as American food rather than Mexican. The flavor profile is not Mexican in any way, but still somewhat enjoyable. The brisket was good. About halfway through the burrito, the mayo taste became really heavy and overwhelming. The "salsa" is like just pureed tomato, no heat. Came here for the Christmas boat parade. We didn't know that you needed tickets, but there were some additional seating that was free and we were still able to see the boats from there. I ended up ordering a birria burrito. The consume was very flavorful and the burrito was well put together however it fell apart halfway through. The first bite, though it gave off this nice crisp shell and held its weight about halfway through. I ended up grabbing a fork and knife to finish off the rest of the burrito. Staff was friendly. Don't waste your time and money here because it'll take both. It's an insult that they even consider to be a Mexican restaurant. We ordered our food which we waited 30mins for and when it came it had zero napkins knowing you eat this with your hands, also don't bother trying to order a drink they are all out of stock of everything. We were really excited to find out that Hawaii Kai was getting a Mexican restaurant. We saw on their Instagram page that they were open now so we went over and they were closed. They said it was their soft opening the day before and to come back the next day. Two days later, we decided to give it another go. Super excited to try their food, we placed the order online. One of the items we ordered was a "Build your own " chimichanga. Emphasis on the build your own because they didn't give us half the items we requested in the chimichanga. No cheese, no sour cream, no chipotle aioli.... And we requested both to be wet and they weren't. It was pretty disappointing because we were really looking forward to this place. I understand these things can happen when a place first opens but it was a mobile order so everything we requested was written down. On a positive note, The food didn't take long. It was ready within 15-20 min of placing the order. The chips are amazing. They were very well seasoned but the salsa tasted only like tomatoes. Not "authentic" Mexican/Tex Mex, but the food is very good ... ordered takeout and the birria chimichanga was still crisp in the container after the hubs brought it home. Meat was well marinated, and the birria sauce was wasn't super oily like others I've had on island. Went there for the first time because I had the Camp Card for $5 off and I was in the area. I get there and am unable to use the kiosk they have to order because it doesn't give you an option for discounts. Spoke to, who I assume is a Manager, and he said that they will have to ring me up at the register. Cashier rang me up and gave me the discount and was super polite. So, their online order system is flawed. But knowing it's cinco de mayo, you think they'd increase staffing or not do take out. Which is what a lot of the restaurants do on this day. Someone got their order and told me good luck. By now, there was a decent crowd waiting for food. One couple came in and was discouraged from ordering online, so they sat at the bar and got their food right away Now to the food. It was not like the picture at all, but was very tasty although very salty. Probably so you'd order more drinks. But it was super soggy and we had to use paper towels to soak up the mess in the containers. The tortillas also soaked up the juices from the salsa verde and had to be eaten with fork and knife. When we got there at 7pm, the order still wasn't ready so we didn't mind a little wait even if we ordered a ahead of time. We ended up not getting the order until 7:20pm...almost 50 minutes to make one burrito is too long.
