Beef tacos

I played two soccer games today and I showed up starving. I could've eaten my cleats! However, I could not finish my burrito. It had olives? What? The meat was smoky which I didn't want. Have you ever been to Mexico? Also the steak in the beef taco was tough! Too bad. - Z age 11

(Tookout 11/04/24 MO @ 5:00pm): Uncle's making burritos as well as other Mexican food favorites! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes throughout O'ahu's Windward side (east shore of the island) after a recent acquisition of an investment/private-use property, I finally made my way to Tio's Burritos. As a born and raised Angeleno, I loved Mexican food and always craved it whenever I returned home from an extended stay away. Needless to say, Mexican food was hard to come by in Hawaii outside of Taco Bell, but I have seen random mom & pops like this one in recent times or places that served burritos and tacos but not necessarily a Mexican restaurant. Were Tio's burritos - along with some tacos and chips * salsa - up to the challenge with their island-style Mexican food!? PURCHASE Piledriver Burrito w/Carnitas + Chips & Salsa ($15.00): A thick burrito stuffed with carnitas, pinto beans, Spanish rice, salsa verde, shredded cheeses, onions, cilantro, and jalapeños, this two-hander wasn't messing around! Packed to the point that I felt it was about to burst if I didn't cut it in half https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=0aCVC2YMzzhSTEmGlF-bbA before I dove in, every bite had a bit of everything which I truly loved. The ingredients were fresh and plentiful, but I wished I had more carnitas than rice and it was more spicy (very low on the spicy meter). I managed to split this into two meals which saved me some money. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=vknbbvMnC5AC5zoohi4OBw 3pc Ghost Pepper Tacos w/Tinga Chicken + Chips & Salsa ($15.00): I was sold on the ghost pepper for some extra spiciness, and although there was some, I could've handled more heat. With your choice of meats, I opted for the rarely-selected tinga chicken. The meat was nicely plentiful, seasoned, shredded, and succulent. The rest of the tacos were built out with the usual dressings, but honestly it was the amount of meat that was the highlight. The tortillas were overmatched by the weight of the ingredients. I also managed to save one for another meal. Five dollars per taco was a tad hard to accept, but ultimately my tummy was happy. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=bdSaDcmVZDqX-ec-85wy6Q Side Chips ($2.00): Apparently, I didn't read that my burrito and tacos came with chips & salsa, or I wouldn't have ordered an extra bag! No worries, their tortilla chips were homemade and wonderfully had the stains of oil as each chip was crispy to near perfection. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=CO2vaAE5PwoACynjuHpvEQ Salsa (COMP): I appreciated this, but it lacked flavor and spiciness. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=QCOAh1yTQ7uY-FZL2Gb9_A SERVICE I simply placed my order at the front kiosk, hung around for about fifteen minutes or so, and then an attractive young woman appeared, called out my name, and handed me my order with a cheery smile and a "come back again" salutation; easy-peasy - mahalo! PARKING (FREE) Located in the outdoor Hawaii Kai Towne Center, there were plenty of spots, and I was able to park relatively close to the business - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Located inside the Tex 808 BBQ & Brews, although they appeared to share some dining space https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=bTNxGrYSxTDZsM7JkvDZPQ they were basically a takeaway food business (I'm sure you were allowed to have your meal there, too, even though the restaurant obviously served food). They had an order kiosk, a view into the kitchen, and an area where completed orders were placed. Decent natural lighting came in through the front door and various windows while bright electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were several TVs with the volume turned up for your background sound. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=O_5oy48_JKQYJahMtYcfZA ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I was pleasantly surprised by Tio's Burritos, and would consider another visit. I've barely scratched the surface for Mexican food in Hawaii, but this was a nice start. Sadly, the meat choices were limited to the standards and didn't include my favorites such as cabeza, chorizo, and lengua. And, the menu selection was simple and tight. I enjoyed the food and service with the prices a tad elevated. Lastly, whenever possible I liked to support small family-owned businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $34.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Very happy to see a new tex-mex / Mexican spot in Hawaii Kai. Located in conjunction with Tex 808, where Phoenix Chinese Restaurant used to be. It's on the right side, while Tex 808 exists on the left side. Kinda glanced at the reviews but decided to try it just 'cause. I think my inner Mexican-loving-foodie had a hunch it was going to be good because I was extremely satisfied. Firstly, they have 2 kiosk screens to order on. While others commented how not ordering from a person takes away from the experience, I believe it made the process way more efficient. Remember, YOU can choose how YOU want to order at the tip of your fingers. No miscommunication or attitude from customer service. This is very smart, and I think more restaurants should be this way. Save money on labor and focus on dishing out food faster! On to the food. I got the burrito and holy goodness, "it was huge" (she said)! There was so much carnitas meat, as well as other fillings. Carnitas wasn't very salty nor dry. It was moist and well-seasoned. I got the lettuce, tomatoes, and a few other things as my choices for fillings. It all went very well together! It also came with chips and salsa. The chips were very crunchy, and had like a slight sweetness - I can't put my finger on it but it was delicious. The salsa was also great, as it tasted extremely fresh. This was so complimentary to the burrito. Cost is $14, as of 9/2024. The burrito fed me for two meals, and not because I saved it, but because it was perfectly sized to feed two (moderate eaters). I think I found a gem in Hawaii Kai. To all the others who have tried in this shopping center, sorry it didn't work out but thanks for paving the way for a wonderful joint like Tio's Burritos to come through and fulfill our true tex-mex/Mexican cravings no joint (sorry, Taco Bell) can fill for miles.

We are always on the lookout for good Mexican food since my husband is Mexican and from California. We saw this place opened down the street from where we live, so we had high hopes! We weren't too hungry, but we wanted to try it out, so we got an order of chips and salsa, a large guacamole, and 1 carnitas taco 1 carnitas taco was $5.. which is pretty pricey. We opened the box to eat it as soon as we got it, and it was a soggy mess :( there was only 1 corn tortilla, and it was cold, while the carnitas and the rest of the filling tasted watery. The taco was so soggy, it was impossible to pick it up to eat it The chips were pretty good, but they forgot my salsa. The guacamole was decently priced ($8 for an 8oz container), but it was very bland and tasted like the "fake" guacamole you get at grocery stores :( Also, on the menu, they had "aguas frescas", but the pictures on the kiosks show that they were actually jarrito sodas - definitely not aguas frescas lol I am hoping that they are still working things out since they are relatively new, so I gave them 1 extra star to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll be back once more to try some of their other stuff, but probably not for awhile

Great addition to the Hawaii Kai area. Dine in was great, love the decor and ambiance of this spot and it still gives vibes of all the previous food spots that used to be in this location. Flavor and portions are great with alot of different protein options to test out different menu offerings at another visit. The winner that we shared with the whole table was the Elote Fries next time we'll order 2!

Pros: Nice Staff Food was decent Cons: Ordering from a kiosk is always so impersonal. Dishes come in plastic containers. Plastic utensils. Confusing restaurant space: If you grab food here, you are not allowed to eat your food on the lanai by the water, which is apparently a BBQ place. Yet their happy hour promotion sign is displayed in the BBQ restaurant?

Build your own chimichanga without half the things I asked for
Susan I.

We were really excited to find out that Hawaii Kai was getting a Mexican restaurant. We saw on their Instagram page that they were open now so we went over and they were closed. They said it was their soft opening the day before and to come back the next day. Two days later, we decided to give it another go. Super excited to try their food, we placed the order online. One of the items we ordered was a "Build your own " chimichanga. Emphasis on the build your own because they didn't give us half the items we requested in the chimichanga. No cheese, no sour cream, no chipotle aioli.... And we requested both to be wet and they weren't. It was pretty disappointing because we were really looking forward to this place. I understand these things can happen when a place first opens but it was a mobile order so everything we requested was written down. On a positive note, The food didn't take long. It was ready within 15-20 min of placing the order. The chips are amazing. They were very well seasoned but the salsa tasted only like tomatoes. The chimichanga we received, although lacking the things we ordered, was very tasty. I really hope they get the kinks worked out so they can stick around.

Chicken burrito was a "mystery meat" looking substance. "No sitting close to the water unless you buy food from Tex808". Ridiculous!

But we were looking for something different, quick, and tasty. That's what we got at K-Mex HI although to be quite frank - the parking lot here is terrible! Mostly due to their location in the middle of the street with a handful of street parking locations shared with multiple other businesses down the lane. It took us 3 rounds of driving before we ended up deciding it was better to drop me off to order and pick up the food and have my man drive around into another larger parking lot to wait the 15-ish minutes it would take for our food to be ready. The owners were so nice. Answering all of my insistent questions, smiling when I ended up ordering something different from what they recommended on the menu (my bad - it's a question I ask all businesses even though I usually decide what I want beforehand LOL). They asked if I needed a bag, if I needed utensils and napkins, and even checked in on me while they made the food! Awesome service and I'm sure it would be the same if we decided to eat in. I liked the atmosphere. It was small but homely, clean, and there were a few small fish tanks in the corner! 15-ish minutes later, food packed up - I jumped back in the car and we drove down to South Shore Market in Ward to eat at the tables and take a glance if Ocean Taste's line was... long (it was). And let me tell you... the food? Delicious. The amount of food? Good for the price! And overall pretty darn great experience. I wasn't the biggest fan of the spicy pork (not my preference). But my fiancé liked it and his only comment was that it was a bit greasy for his liking. Reminded him he was in-fact eating spicy pork which is normally served on his plate lunch in a piece of tinfoil so the oil doesn't get everywhere! The carne asada was super delish along with the gochujang hot sauce cups we found at the bottom of the bag. I'd get K-Mex HI again if I was in the area but I'd love to see them in another location where I can more easily park! That's the only real bummer about this place and has deterred me from returning. :(
