This review is for a custom jewelry project with Alicia Arnold. I can also say a million nice things about the shop itself, but this review is for Alicia. Background: In a car in Boston, on our first "family meeting" trip, I tied a string from Mike's Pastry Shop around his finger and told him "You are mine". He wore the string for months, until it started falling apart. Then we put it in a little box. When he properly proposed to me, I knew we had to recreate this string ring for his wedding band. I googled for custom jewelers and found the Tiny Jewel Box. I emailed and they connected me with Alicia. I explained to her what I was looking for -- this string ring made into platinum. I sent photos of the string. I even brought in the string itself. We went through a couple CAD mockups and a few wax molds to get to perfect. She received my feedback wonderfully, and did an excellent job incorporating my suggestions. At the last moment my fiance decided he wanted a thicker ring. No problem from Alicia. Another wax mold. She smiled and smiled. The whole process usually takes a few weeks, but we dragged it for months. Just smiles. We are very particular, and had many requests. She met every single request promptly with a smile. She worked tirelessly to meet our requirements. The ring is PERFECT. Absolutely to die for. The envy of everyone, seriously. It is so shiny and special, and looks from another place and time. When we went to pick it up, my fiance lit up with delight. Every time we see the ring on his finger, it makes us smile. I have some jewelry that needs to be redesigned and I will choose Alicia. I have recommended her to several friends who are planning engagements, or who are recently engaged. I recommend you go see her for any custom jewelry needs you have or are considering. I know it is a strange or touchy subject to comment on price, but I feel that I need to for people who might shy away from custom jewelry for fear of it being too expensive... the price was 100% reasonable and in line with what you would spend for an equivalent weight mass produced designer band. Without hesitation you should reach out to Alicia and consider this approach as if money was no object. Then make your decision. read more

I made an appointment to meet with an associate who told me that they would be able to design reset an heirloom ring and use the gold which has sentimental value. When I got to the Tiny Jewel box, I asked for the associate but they were busy with a walk-in sale and I proceeded to wait about a half an hour. Then another associate ended up serving me since the first was still busy with the walk-in sale, and that associate told me they would not be able to reuse the gold in a custom design as I had hoped. The second associate was perfectly nice. This would have NEVER have happened at Tiffany's or another high end jewelry store. Expectations should be correctly set BEFORE an appointment is made. And when an appointment has been made it should be honored. The walk-in sale should have been given to a different associate or told to wait. I have had that happen to me several times at other jewelry stores and had 0 problem with it. When a person carves out time in their day for a special experience like designing an heirloom ring, their time should be honored. read more

Appears to be a great jeweler, (can't attest for the merchandise) but I came away disappointed after bringing in my Hamilton tank watch to have a battery changed. The watch had two incorporated faces. When the clerk waited on me, he immediately indicated that because my watch had two separate faces, that there would be a double-charge for the batteries. I was quoted a $50 estimate. I refused to have this done, as I've never paid $50 for a watch battery. I typically only pay $20 to have this done on this particular watch. I searched the area & found a jeweler that charge me $20. A total ripoff, or case of overcharging for a simple fee. read more

I was really disappointed/shocked at my first visit to Tiny Jewel Box. I just got engaged and my engagement ring is antique and not a traditional shape. I let the salesperson know that I was researching bands that could go with it and its unique shape. I was then told that they "hate" when grooms buy rings that don't match with wedding bands. And that one option would be to wear my engagement ring on my other hand and "buy a new ring." This was within being in the store for less than five minutes. I was pretty shocked by this advice, since I had told them I got engaged less than two weeks ago. I really like my ring (which I told them twice) and have no interest in getting a new one. They also advised me of many other "shortcomings" of my ring and things that could possibly be wrong with it, which was all unsolicited. Including that if the stones fell out that they would be impossible to replace. All I said was that I was interested in looking at a band to purchase. I was in the store for less than 15 minutes and these were the first things mentioned to me. I am not sure what all of the attitude was about, but it was a very unwelcoming and not fun experience. read more

I say cheap because I was asking for gold and was told subtly that I could only afford silver by the woman downstairs. Why they stuck him up there I'll never know. I came here, thanks to the reviews on Yelp, in my search for the perfect vintage diamond engagement ring to give to my girlfriend. The selection of items was pretty lacking for a store that claims to have a specialty in estate jewelry. In addition, they mix truly vintage pieces with replicas. I know this is a somewhat common practice, but when I came in to the store, I requested vintage. Please show me what you have that fits what I'm looking for. I have mixed feelings about TJB. On the one hand, the prices are actually quite reasonable for designer settings. In particular, I came in wanting a semi bezel with a touch of pave (think of a strip down a wider band), and my fiancee came in wanting the thinnest band possible, and she found a Mark Patterson setting that really fit the bill (tiny pave band, and crescents that looked like a semi bezel, and a cathedral shank so it wouldn't get caught on everything). For that particular designer setting, TJB had the lowest price we could find in NY or DC. If you go in without a male counter part, perchance to browse the selection before coming with the fiancee -- the service is not nearly as attentive. It's actually a bit off the cuff. Soo...come with the one that they perceive to have the wallet, or else they don't give you the time of day. That was my experience. read more

I went to Tiny Jewel Box in search of a wedding band. I was running out of time; every jewelry store I had been to at this point was a let down. I started getting nervous I would never find a ring I liked unless I spent a fortune. I had a budget in mind and I really didn't want to go over, but it was important that I felt good about the purchase too. I knew about TJB but I thought they wouldn't have anything in my price range so I ruled it out originally. After reading reviews, I thought I should give it a shot! This jewelry store is beautiful and everyone was so friendly. They have a great selection to choose from and you might be interested to know the salespeople do not work on commission. So, tell them your budget and let them help you find a piece you love and can afford. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and creative. The store is a family business that has been in DC for about 80 years - impressive, right? They wouldn't let me leave without cleaning my ring. They noticed something I also noticed about a month ago, soap or lotion got underneath the stone and had hardened on it. Interestingly, I had taken my ring into the store where we bought it and they mentioned it to me but said they saw it and cleaned it. Clearly, they didn't but TJB kept the ring for 2 hours to clean it properly. I'll be a returning customer! read more

Five stars for the service and selection. There is an overwhelming amount of items, but the items displayed are top notch. You can peruse through books for special orders. My jewelry shopping experience is very limited, but this was by far the most comfortable experience. We worked with Rich S. and he was so wonderful with my indecision. We met at least three times. My wedding rings were VERY modest and it was lovely to receive attention despite not spending what most people spent. They have Annie Fensterstock (sp?) who crafts all her jewelry and one of my wedding bands is from her collection. Work with Rich Spero, I can't say enough about how great it was to work with him. Note on choosing ring sizes: Platinum and gold are heavier than ring sizers. Thinner bands will move around more i.e. fit looser. Also, the skin under your rings will atrophy. My rings sized at 4.75 and I wish I had gone with a 4.5 so that the rings don't move around, esp. during the winter. Go! Enjoy! read more

S picked TJB because of two unrelated personal recommendations, one of which noted TJB's excellent record keeping. S picked a TJB-exclusive ring and customized it. I have been told that it is "literally the most beautiful ring I have ever seen." (I think so too.) S couldn't wait to introduce me to Maggie, who had helped him with his order. Like any young lady, I love scoping out diamond rings. Dream big, right? Some friends had recommended the Tiny Jewel Box, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out on a Friday post-work. It's an awkward thing to look at engagement rings. Emotional, financial, confusing, overwhelming. But Maggie, the saleswoman who greeted us, was great. She walked us through all kinds of ring choices, encouraged me to try things on, joked with us, made note of what I liked, gave my boyfriend a card with all the relevant info. It was great. Diamonds, while a girl's best friend, might be the most complicated things I have ever encountered. I heard that TJB is owned by Georgetown people, so I figured they of all people could make some sense of diamonds for me. I made the mistake of going at 6pm one day. Yeah, they close at 5.30. So went the next day when they were actually open, and the lady attending to me was quite helpful, but seemed reluctant, like she didn't believe me when I said I didn't know the difference between SI1 and VVS2. She finally explained to me that any flaws SI1 or greater are not visible to the naked eye, nor any color greater than I. So now I'm armed with information and desire. And the good news is that I can get a lesser quality, but BIG ASS diamond for not too shabby a price! Woot! read more

The best part about Tiny Jewel Box is actually the upstairs watch section. The SA is very nice and patient and this store is one of the only authorized Rolex retailers in the area. Other than watches, I don't see much of a reason to return. I wasn't very impressed with the jewelry section downstairs -- very traditional designs and a very indifferent staff. There was also a lot of David Yurman on display, for some odd reason. I didn't think sterling silver and cheap irradiated topaz really fit the image TJB is trying to project. read more

What an fab experience I've had at Tiny Jewel Box! I went into the store expecting to look for a piece of jewelry for a special occasion. This was going to be a big-deal purchase for me. Of course, my "big deal" isn't so big compared to some of the stuff they stock, and I wasn't sure what I would be able to afford. I started talking to Matthew about what I wanted, and he suggested that I take some of the jewelry I already owned and remake into something unique, instead of buying something off the shelf. I loved that idea and began working with their in-house designer, Alicia. What a rockstar! Instead of buying one piece of jewelry, she has basically reinvented some pieces that I got from family members, but never wore. Her designs were amazing and I got way way more bang for my buck this way. I feel like I have a whole new jewelry collection, and what's even better is that it's all meaningful! My fiance and I had a great experience at Tiny Jewel Box. We showed up with a small budget and an old ring we wanted to pull the center stone from - two things that a lot of jewelers don't seem to want to deal with. We worked with Travis and he couldn't have been nicer. At the initial appointment, he showed me a few things within (and just over) our budget and then called me the next week to follow up with some more information. We visited several shops, and I ended up back at TJB - their selection is absolutely beautiful, and I just had a good feeling about the staff. I settled on a simple Mark Patterson setting, and we turned over the old ring. I got the empty setting back within a week, and the new ring arrived in a month. It is BEAUTIFUL and they did a great job cleaning up my old diamond; it's never looked this sparkly before. All in all, we found a gorgeous ring, and Travis made us feel right at home during the shopping process. I also felt that they treated my mother's ring with respect, which was really important to me. While I have had a nice pendant designed by TJB, and several repairs through the years, I was greatly disappointed by a recent experience with this business. A few years back I was heartily encouraged by a sales associate at TJB to purchase a bangle on sale. I asked about it being a more delicate piece, and was reassured it should hold up just fine. I wore the piece every once in a while. It start to become misshapen. I took it in to TJB and they recommended that I have the bangle opened up so there wouldn't be pressure on the bracelet when I pulled it over my hand. The repair actually made for more problems--leading to more damage of the bracelet. TJB did ultimately refund the repair charge, but took no responsibility for selling me a piece of jewelry that was far too fragile to wear, and no longer reparable. Ultimately, this purchase was a real waste of money, and TJB did not offer anything other than refunding a repair that led to the expedited deterioration of the jewelry. A reputable business like this should do better for its customers. Buyers beware. read more

I worked with Alicia to recreate a vintage ring that had been stolen. I am completely blown away and overjoyed with the results! I had an old, not very clear photo to go off of and my memory of the ring. Alicia listened to me every step of the way and truly made an identical ring. I recently purchased a watch at TJB and the experience could not have been better. I'll admit that I was somewhat apprehensive walking in, being new to the world of watches and expecting to feel like the novice that I am. My worry was entirely unwarranted. I worked with Brian who quickly put me at ease and made the entire encounter a rewarding and enjoyable one. Brian talked with me about my interests and preferences, showed me several watches that I'd been wanting to see, and ultimately introduced me to a timepiece that had not been on my radar but was absolutely the right one for me. What saves this store is the fact that it carries Rolex watches, and is the only one in the area short of heading out to Tysons Corner. I also hear they will be expending the watch selection shortly to carry a few more of the high end lines. I inquired about a rolex Daytona and they asked if i was an existing customer. When i mentioned that I hadn't purchased watches from them in the past they said there is nothing they could do to help me. Clearly Im a second class citizen in the eyes of management there. On my way out I took a look through the engagement ring selection and was asking about some of their pricing on diamonds/finished pieces. I was shocked at some of the prices quoted to me (and no, im not comparing to "bluenile," which i consider a joke, but to other local establishments offering equal service for a fraction of the price). I just finished designing a ring with Alicia at the Tiny Jewel Box, and I couldn't be happier with the result! My fiance proposed with a family diamond, but he knew that I wanted to be involved in the design process for the actual ring. We met with Alicia, who listened intently as I described and shared a few photos of what I had in mind, and then sketched out an absolutely gorgeous design on the spot. She encouraged me to mull over the sketch, but once I signed off on it she created a computer model of the ring, which her team then used to print out a 3D model that I was actually able to wear around for a weekend to see how the final ring would look and feel. This stage of the process was not only incredibly cool, (3D printing blows my mind) it helped me feel confident that the design was really what I wanted. And when I did have any questions or concerns about what the final product would look like, Alicia was EXTREMELY helpful in explaining every last detail and making sure I was 100% comfortable with the process. (Designing something you'll wear forever is stressful!) When we did get the final product there were only good surprises-- it was even more stunning than any computer or 3D model could have prepared me for! All in all, the design process with Alicia, the end result, and the service we received from everyone in the store was excellent, and I can't wait to return to get our wedding bands! read more

I was looking for a particular watch and was referred to the Tiny Jewel Box by a friend. I ended up walking in on a random weekday and had a very pleasant and informative experience. The sales rep, Steve, was very knowledgable and went through all the details of the watch I wanted and even compared a couple of different examples. Unfortunately the model I wanted was not in stock, so Steve let me know that he would be in touch when he has a better understanding of it coming back into stock. I also walked around the store and had very good experiences with the rest of the staff. Then Coronavirus hit and everything shut down. Fortunately, Steve still kept in touch via email and kept me updated of the situation. After a week or two of things returning to some normal I got the wonderful email that my piece had arrived. I drove to the store the next day, got the watch fitted, and was taught how to correctly use and care for the piece. When the day comes that I need to purchase a significant piece of jewelry, Tiny Jewel Box will be my first stop. I came here for three watch repairs. One, a link removal took about five minutes and was done while I browsed. The second, a band change, they could not help me with due to the type of band and how it was attached to the watch. The third, a battery change, took about a day and a half and cost $25. I was quoted 1-2 days and that I would be called when it was ready; I happened to be in the area on the 2nd day so I stopped in to check. They bumped my watch up and changed the battery while I waited there. Customer service here was excellent. Everyone was kind and helpful and service was fast. I have my eye on a few pieces of jewelry that I was considering ordering online from the jeweler's websites - but now I will be coming back in to TJB instead! read more

Upon entering this corner shop, the store opens up to an expensive area that is separated by various high end jewelry and watches including Cartier and David Yurman. If you're looking for rings, The right hand side is where they host a lot of their engagement stuff, and they do limited selection of diamonds on site. The salesperson was very helpful, not pushy at all, and knowledgeable. Quite a different experience of what you would get at Mervis Diamonds. They have their own designer in house and have some lovely Tiny Jewel Box designs. The store has a boutique feel, but has quite a number of items to choose from. It tends to attract a lot of customers from the adjacent Mayflower Hotel. read more
