Best watch repair in DC. I've been going to Mr. Compton's store for almost 40 years. He regularly keeps my 1944 Bulova pink gold watch in pink condition. Will be taking it in tomorrow to have a new crystal put on as I fell while walking and broke it open. Watch is still ticking away. Alas, needs new crystal. So I give Susan 4 stars. I have not used their repair or engraving services. My ex from two years ago works at the World Bank and bought me two pieces of jewelry from there. He had given me the receipts in case I wanted to exchange them. In any case, I went there a few times last year to look at items, one of which was a nice emerald estate piece. I was an idiot and should have gotten it but there was no occasion for me to treat myself. In any case, I went in yesterday and she remembered me from like over a year ago! Super-friendly and patient...and she lets you know about items that are discounted. In any case, I found two great pieces for gifts. Went in here to get my watch repaired. All the sudden it just stopped working though I had gotten the battery replaced months before. I stepped in and someone was immediately there to help me. He popped it open, found the loose item, put it all back in place, and returned it to me within a minute for no charge. I am pretty tough on jewelry and broke the latch on one pearl necklace and had somehow tarnished a Tiffanys necklace to the point where I had no idea how to fix it. The chain was all dark and I tried dipping silver polish but it just smelled bad and made me think I was ruining the expensive necklace one dunk at a time. I love both of these necklaces and finally decided to make the effort to find a nearby jewelry store. I actually asked my boss if he knew of a jewelry repair shop nearby and he said he knew there were a few but the closest one (to the White House) is Compton Jewelry on G Street. I realized I walk by it EVERY day on my way to work but never really took in that it was a jewelry store that could come to my rescue. I walked in and there was a young guy (teenager) who I presented the jewelry to. He said he had to ask the woman (who I assume owns the place/looks like she runs it at least) what the solution was for the pearls. He took my other necklace to the back and came out about 5 minutes later with it shiny and brand new looking! What a wonder! He said he tried the dipping but it didn't help so he shined it by hand with a cloth. I promptly bought one of those clothes there! The best part was that they didn't charge me for shining the necklace! I went in there thinking the necklace was a goner and mourning its loss and left with it looking brand new! The woman said it would cost at least $20 to fix my pearls because she had to restring them and it wouldn't be done until Monday. Whatever, it's not like I wear them every day (although I would if I could) so I could wait until then. The problem was that when I went in the following Friday (after the promised Monday) they said that it would be until the next Monday. So I told them that meant I was waiting two weeks for the pearls to be restrung but I didn't push the issue. It ended up costing what she had told me it would and I didn't ask for a discount because of the delay, although I'm sure I could have. read more

I just went to Compton to get an extra hole punched into a leather watch band. I was very impressed with them -- they knew their watches, were friendly, and punched the hole without any charge. The man I spoke with had been working there for over 60 years, and on the way out, showed me a pocket watch from my same watch maker -- you can tell he appreciates his life's work! I've used Compton as a watch repair shop and a jewelry store and have been happy. They have repaired, cleaned, service, and replaced crystals. They have even tracked down difficult to find parts. Watches are sent out and retrieved once a week so a repair takes some time. They carry a nice assortment of estate jewelry and I have been successful shopping for my wife and mother. Estate prices are good. So, the shop is small but packs a good punch. As such it gets five stars. read more

The folks at Compton care about timepieces and longevity. I took them my watch with a failed band clip on a Thursday (you have to go Thursday if you need watch repair) expecting to be sold a new bracelet/band. No, the watchmaker, Mr. Compton himself, assessed the break, made the repair and had my watch for me within a few days, at a very reasonable price. I'm a bit suspect of yelp and the "algorithm" that goes into filtering the reviews. As of this writing half a dozen positive reviews were hidden. Could it be that this old school business doesn't pay to play on yelp? Hard to say, but most of the filtered results appear legit. read more

My fiancée had a ring made here years ago and was pleased with it so when her brand new engagement ring needed a ring guard, she brought it here. Compton's absolutely mangled the setting with scratches and one large divot on the side of the ring. When my fiancée complained, they were nonchalant about it. I have a pocket watch that is at least 125 years old. The crystal came loose and I went to see Alan Compton who was recommended by a neighbor of mine. He took a look and told me he could fix it using the original crystal. Later that same day he called to tell me it was ready. Alan did a perfect job of remounting the crystal on this antique watch. When I picked it up, I asked him to also replace another watch's battery. He did so immediately. His prices for both services were extremely reasonable. Alan has been in the business for 65 years and I am very happy that he is still working in DC. I recommend him highly as one who will give you excellent personal service. read more

I went to this place because of the good reviews on Yelp and thought I had gotten good service. I had brought in a Baume and Mercier watch that needed a new battery. They told me that my watch needed some other items besides the battery and I had them do this as well. However, within less than 3 months of getting the new battery, the watch died again. I brought it into a place I trust in NYC and they told me that I was sold an old battery as new batteries last at least 1 year and that the items that were replaced were faulty. They put in a new battery and also gave me a guarantee on the battery for at least one year. So my advice is not to go to this place, choose another place since their watch batteries are very old and they do not seem to know what they are doing. read more

This has been my favorite jewelry store for at least the last twenty years. I've always been treated very cordially. All repairs have been done on time and at a reasonable cost. I bought a pendant once that I hoped could be converted to a pin. When I took it here, they steered me away from a very expensive modification that I had in mind to an inexpensive and fully satisfactory one. This is a family owned shop that has been in business for many decades. (My grandmother had some jewelry that my grandfather has purchased from them back in the 50's and 60's.) I recently took in my grandmother's engagement and wedding ring set to have the diamonds taken out and placed into two new rings at my mother's request. Susan looked the rings over with me, agreed about having them reset but suggested that we only have enough diamonds for 1 good ring which was my opinion as well. We looked at rings that she had in the store and came up with a possible design for the new ring. A few weeks later, she asked me if I trusted her on choosing a slightly different type of mounting for the center diamond, I did and let her and the goldsmith choose one. End result, the ring is fabulous! I am pleased and so is my mother; very happy that I let Susan and the goldsmith come up with a slighly different design - it looks contemporary but still classic, the diamonds shine beautifully and the gold is a good heavy weight so that my mom can have years of wear from this ring. read more

I have had two pleasant experiences in this shop in 2011. By nature of being a smaller business they don't turn specialty work around as fast as the commercial places but the jeweler does good custom work. He is usually only in the shop once or twice a week. The sales people are definitely not pushy however they also do not coddle customers or display the type of eagerness to please that you will find in wholesale commercial shops. If you know what you want they will definitely take the time to steer you towards the product that best suits your needs. I will likely spend my hard earned money here again. read more

Now a lovely sales person from Continental Jewlers, now closed, is at Compton's and uses the repair person from that store. I just had an ruby ring and John Hardy necklace repaired there. Excellent service on my Swiss watch. My first experience with a nearby shop advised not just the need of a battery but $150 for extensive cleaning or $250 for a new movement. My husband and I have had 10+ watch batteries replaced here, as well as a couple of leather bands. All are done quickly and professionally. I recently had two rings resized and they did a great job at a fair price. This review is really for another ring I had altered by them. I have an old family ring made of etched gold that had a resizing hack job done about 30 years ago. I took it to Compton and they not only were able to salvage the ring and resize it to fit me, but they also fixed the seam so that it looks brand new. This is a really excellent place for jewelry repair! They've done great work restringing and replacing clasps on a number of my grandmother's pieces over the years. However, the most impressive experience was my last one: I brought them a watch band that three other jewelers had said could not be fixed, but Compton was able to repair it.
