Starting in November of last year I began working with Alicia at Tiny Jewel Box to design a custom engagement ring for my girlfriend. I had been looking at rings and learning about materials for a year, but had hit a point where I really needed a professional who could help me hone my vision. Alicia provided that and so much more. I had a hard date set for proposal, and she worked with me to nail that deadline, even with the holiday season rush. She walked an incredible line of providing her artistic input and reassurance without pushing me in a direction that didn't feel right. She was open to all of my ideas and helped me to see the long and short picture of an engagement ring- durable, timeless, elegant. The custom design process is excellent. It begins with a consultation about what you're trying to make, the style of the person getting the piece, and your budget. From this conversation I was able to email in photos of rings that I thought were in the right direction, and then I got a series of sketches from Alicia to help narrow the scope of what I was looking for. From there, Alicia created a 3D model that allowed me to see the ring from all sides and really get a feel for the way it would look. At the same time, Alicia was busy tracking down an unusual type of diamond for the center stone, bringing in several different sets of options for me to see and decide on. She was really reassuring during the process, which I needed because I could have spent another full year agonizing on exactly The Right look. We went back and forth- Alicia spent most of one of her vacation days in Jan re-working a model to accommodate my timeline- and then a 3D mold was made that allowed it be cast into rough form. After that I was able to see it a last time, cast but without stones. Alicia got my thoughts on finishing touches and some awesome detail work she would do on the band, and we were set. I went in around lunch on a Monday(rainy Monday) and the staff were great. Rich helped to explain the differences between diamonds with the 4 c's and he broke it down nicely. He also let me try on a few different styles of rings and carat sizes. I felt really special trying on a 2 carat but it is outside the price range. After over 13 years of marriage, two children, and lots of adventures, it was time for new engagement and wedding rings. We are so fortunate that we met Brian as soon as we walked into the bridal department. From the moment we stood at the counter he took care of us. He counseled us, without ever pressuring us, and helped us choose a setting and a diamond that I will wear for a lifetime and pass on to the next generation. My experience with Tiny Jewel Box was fantastic! I walked into the store in a deep sweat knowing I was about to make a huge life decision. I had a friend with me to help who had arrived before me. When I arrived she was already talking with Brian. He introduced himself and asked me about myself. After talking for awhile I told Brain I needed a ring with a plain band and one diamond and he didn't even blink an eye at my rather "plain" request. He said "you can still personalize it". I came up with an idea that I wanted for the design. A couple of days later I received an email with the sketches of the setting. After approving the setting we looked at diamonds. Brian had diamonds brought in and started teaching me about diamonds. He showed me how to use a "jeweler's loupe" to check clarity, cut quality etc. Then I chose the diamond. Once the design and diamond was finalized the team used a process of digital fabrication to make a physical prototype. This was absolutely the best part of the design process being able to see a physical representation before going forward! It's probably the smartest service you can seek out in a jeweler and Tiny Jewel Box has it! Brian was fantastic to work with and I am more than pleased with the end product. He was professional, responsive, creative....the list just goes on and on! I could not be more pleased with the ring! It is stunning! A nightmare! 5 weeks into our engagement and a trip to the emergency room later, the ring is back in the shop a second time. The first time it arrived late and with poor workmanship and wrong sizing. It was also sized wrong the second time and ended up cutting off my circulation, necessitating being sawed off in the emergency room. Instead of showing empathy and a desire to make things right, the owner lambasted me (for putting the ring on my finger) and the doctor (for sawing it off to save my finger). He spoke to me extremely rudely then denied my fiance a replacement or refund, which was my request. Now the mangled ring is back in their hands. Alicia Arnold, TJB's Director of Custom Design, is a miracle worker! I came to her with a long list of specifications as well as some of my own ideas for a custom piece. She managed to incorporate all of these ideas, as well as some brilliant ones of her own, into a piece that far exceeded my expectations--and I went in with pretty high expectations!
