I was writing my review for Ballston Mall (which sucks) and realized I should do a review for Express Jewelers. I really like this place. I have used it for several watch battery replacements as well as to have the band on my Wenger tightened. But don't that the name fool you. They are not express unless that is what you need. When you need or want them to take their time they will. You see this is the place my now hubby learned about rings and designs and got comfortable making a decision. They were nice and helpful, he learned a lot and in the end felt good about his decisions. They were never pushy. They helped us find designs we liked and that messed well with our personalities and preferences. I hope they continue to exist for a long long time, after all we plan to get anniversary rings. I really wanted these guys to work out. I have a collection of designer glasses that really need crystal repair but...I went in to ask about my glasses and a guy behind the counter started talking about how my glasses could be bought for 30 Bucks at Sunglass Hut.(They are $500 Dolce and Gabbana prescription glasses not sunglasses) How they are all made in China and cheap and he knows because he was a manager a Sunglass Hut. I politely corrected him and asked if they could repair the glasses and another very nice reasonable guy, Raul, sized and said he could repair my glasses. He asked me to come back at the end of the day. When I did my glasses were no where to be found in the completed projects bin but were left on the counter of the repair room, with no name attached to it and completely filthy. At least the 3 crystals were replaced (with a slightly larger size as I was told the smaller size is impossible to order....which I now doubt in lieu of the rest of the fabulous customer service I received.) I paid 30 bucks...10 bucks a crystal. I will not be returning. read more

My husband and I got our wedding bands here, just plain ones that the store actually orders for you in your size. It was supposed to take 7-10 days to get them in, and we waited two weeks before I called the shop and found out that they were indeed there and I could pick them up. Whoever picked up the phone first was rather rude about me not having my order number right in front of me, but Raul took over and apologized for that and was able to find my order. Unfortunately, when we went my husband's ring had been shipped in the wrong size. We were told it would take another 7-10 days for them to get a ring in the right size. It ended up taking 3 weeks and 3 days to get it back! So what I thought would be a 7-10 day wait took over 5 weeks! While I understand this is more the fault of their ring supplier than the store itself, I would recommend going to a big box jewelry store that has wedding bands in stock for this type of purchase - I could have really have bought these rings at Macy's down the hall or online for faster and cheaper. read more

I checked out a few places and I decided on this place. It's in ballston mall which sucks, but Raul the shop owner was really nice. I got my ring resized. It was still a bit loose after I picked it up and we had a bit of trouble getting the correct size for my finger. It's only been about two weeks and today I noticed that one of my diamonds was missing. Raul didn't inform me that since we're downsizing my diamonds will probably be loose. I really wanted to like this jewelers, but since this had happen I don't think I'll be coming back here. read more

Normally I just automatically assume that any store in the Ballston mall is going to be disappointing - but this place is a gem! I work above the mall so I thought I'd try it a few months ago when my watch needed resizing, solely because it was convenient. I walked in and he told me I'd need 2 links taken out...and I was annoying and disagreed and told him that it would be too tight, so he only took out 1 per my request. Needless to say...I came back hours later after I realized he was right, and he took out the other link at no charge. I needed my earrings cleaned a few months later and immediately remembered this place. Brought them in to be cleaned...an hour later I picked them up looking better than they did when I bought them, and at NO charge! Great place for watch battery replacements! I showed up shortly before closing, and between the gentleman ahead of me and my own, we had ten watches. The man working was able to have all ten watches fixed and sized in half an hour. They seem to have non-standard hours though, so may be a good idea to call ahead before arriving. read more

We got an engagement ring and two wedding bands here, and the whole experience was fantastic. Raul was patient and did a fantastic job on each of them, even helping us with several rounds of resizing at no extra cost. Great place for watch battery replacement!! I work next to the mall; my Burberry watch battery was basically dying. I walked in and they quoted me within the first 5 minutes to ensure that I was okay with the price. It was extremely reasonable coming out at $20.00. Then, they told me it would take about 15 minutes, so I just walked around the area for a little while, and they fixed it good as new! Fast service, friendly workers and very good work. I went here after work to get the battery changed on my Seiko watch. He took a glance at it, told me exactly how much it would cost and to come back in fifteen minutes. Came back a couple minutes early and he had everything ready to go, including my receipt - he kindly informed me that the battery was warranted for a year, and to come back if it went out before then. Total? $15.90 A couple other reviews have noted problems with rings, and I can't speak to that, but for watches? Fast service, but then at check out he charges me $50; the batteries were $20 EACH. That is just really outrageous pricing to me, and I felt he was intentionally deceptive on the quote. I did not end up using Express Jewelers. First, their response to my quote inquiry took too long and second, I felt the cost they were quoting was pretty high for the repair I needed. I only needed them to open a few stainless steel split jump rings on a necklace and rearrange the charms. When I didn't hear back from them until many hours later, it was too late, as they are close to my office and I'd gone home for the day. I went on YouTube and watched a video on how to properly open a jump ring. Stopped at Michael's that evening and for $6.00 (on sale), bought a 5 piece set of jewelry pliers and did the job myself in about 10 minutes. Easy peasy! I thanked Express Jewelers for their reply, even though it took a long time for them to respond. I never heard anything from them again. My word of advice, as a former business owner in a very competitive market, do something like this for a reasonable fee and you might win a future customer, not to mention more word-of-mouth marketing than you can ever buy. read more

I was looking for a place to clean a necklace and resize a ring...I had it resized a few months ago at another place, but it was still too big and one of the chip diamonds fell out after the work...I found a review on here that pretty much said "Ballston Mall sucks, but these are the best jewelers in Arlington..." All true. They took beautiful care of my pieces, returned them to shiney glory, didn't charge me a fortune, and all within a few days. Besides the theaters, this may be the only store in this mall worth a damn. I've had batteries replaced, watch links removed/re-sized, cleaned and polished, and even had special parts ordered for an older watch that 2 other jewelers I tried prior couldn't service. We stopped in to have a links removed from a new Christmas gift. He was very friendly and efficient. Fifteen minutes and $15 later, we were finished. My boyfriend said it was a little snug. He told us the links were large and if he added one back in it would be too loose. But he said we only have to pay the adjustment fee once so if we keep the receipt and if after wearing it for a few days he still wanted it larger, he could come back in for free. read more

I give up. I've tried to use this place on several occassions hoping it will be my local go-to for jewelry repair, only to be massively dissapointed every time except when I ask for something simple such as a battery replacement in my watch. Two examples worth highlighting: Knock-off necklace repair: I had a knock-off Van Cleef and Arpels 50-inch base metal with rhodium plating neckalce. It was a standard large link chain connected by a few decorative Van Cleef icons with welded eyelets. One of the welded eyelets had come apart and I asked them to fix it. They said that the base metal would not be a problem. When I got it back, it was noticeably shorter. Indeed, they had just removed the welded icon and reconnected the link chain to one that was not broken. There was a pattern to the original neckalce that was now off because of this. I asked them to take another stab because I didn't want it shorter. A few hours later I returned and the guy showed me the "piece he had fixed" and packaged it in a bag. When I got home, he hadn't done anything; he just showed me a part of the necklace that hadn't been altered. I couldn't wear it anymore since they had thrown the extra piece away and I just had to throw the necklace away. Watch: After having successfully gotten a battery replaced, I decided to try them for something that didn't seem all that much more challenging. I took the rather expensive watch to have the crown (the dial that sets time and date) repaired as it had lost an onyx cap stone. They told me they would get a quote because it would be a special order, and that it would take about a week and a half to get the quote, get the stone, and get it fixed. They also said it would be between $40-50. After a week, I visited the store because I had not heard from them. Found out they ordered the stone without asking permission and it was already on its way. And oh btw, it would be $65 but it would be done in 5 days. Disappointed but still encouraged that my watch would be fixed, I chalked it up that I probably would've allowed them to do it for that price even if they had called. TWO WEEKS LATER I still haven't been contacted or called, so I called them. After spending 10 minutes on hold while they chased down my paperwork, I'm informed that if I arrive in 25 minutes, my watch will be fixed. So now I'm pissed that I had to call them to get them off their butts to fix my watch. When I arrive, the watch looks funny. The cap stone is significantly larger than the original. What was barely noticeable is now clearly sticking out 1/16 of an inch. I mentioned this to him and he said this was the original match. So I took the watch to another jeweler and asked their opinion and they said that it is obviously not supposed to stick out that far. So three weeks to fix a crown that was never fixed properly. Very disappointing. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on them. Well, and me. read more

I've been a customer of Express Jewelers since they started as a Kiosk at Ballston Common Mall back in 1991. The quality and craftsmanship of their work & repair should be enough to keep any customer long term, but for me it's the personal way that I'm treated that is quintessential to their business and longevity. Every time I stop by the store, I feel like I'm visiting family, and am always greeted with smile. It's also a very nice feeling to go to a store, have the first 10 mins of conversation to be about life and family progress before even a thought or question is asked about sales or jewelry. The owner, Raul, treats me more like we are brothers rather than a customer. For example, one day I stopped by to pick up a repaired watch, and he was finishing making an espresso for himself. He offered and gave it to me instead, then made another one for himself. That's the personal touch, in my opinion, that has kept them in business for so long, and clearly has secured my loyalty as one of their customers. Aside from these things, what I appreciate most about Raul and his staff are the deals/discounts that they provide on a regular basis. I've never been able to find another store that can beat their prices. At best, I may rarely find a store that come close to matching their prices in hopes of getting new customers, but the personal touch of Express Jewelers is uniquely priceless. Their repair services set the bar, and they never disappoint. They sell and deliver quality jewelry with a smile and guarantee that has always kept me satisfied. Even after moving to Massachusetts in late 1990s, I remained a loyal customer. Since I continued to visit family living in DC area, I would hold all my jewelry repairs and purchases until I come to DC, and go see Raul and his staff. Now that I've moved back to DC area, it's been great to bring my kids to the store, and through their own experiences with Raul and Express Jewelers, they have now become loyal customers themselves. Once inside the store, I was immediately greeted by Raul, who is extremely professional and personable, and was given a detailed overview of the "purchasing an engagement ring" process and all that it entails, along with what were the best options for me with the price range that I was looking for. They do good work here, but it's not necessarily "express." Call ahead, because they often only have one person working and it slows down the process. Also, that person won't be able to do any tasks that require him to go to the back (quick jewelry services), since he is the only person working. read more

What a jewel of a place! Having lived in the Ballston area of Arlington for almost three decades, I can attest to the creativity and care taken with each piece of jewelry (whether valuable pieces purchased through Raul or Donald or just casual costume jewelry given to me by an Aunt). Each piece is treated lovingly as if a treasure. My husband will go only to Express Jewelers for battery changes, watch bands, repairs and special gifts. Express Jewelers is conveniently located in the Ballston Common Mall, so we drop items off for repair while we shop and return later to collect. We have developed a close relationship with these talented jewelers over the years and respect their judgment and advice. Raul and Donald will be celebrating their 25th anniversary this year I believe.
