I get it. Tiny Boxwoods is a three and a half stars kind of place. I want it to be better than that but at least, for now, that's where it stands. Ambiance is fantastic - the decor is bright and airy and the staff is friendly and seemingly eager to please. They have some inventive cocktails (the Bourbon sour was just what the doctor ordered for the end of a scorcher summer day) and the meat&cheese board may be among the best I have ever had and I have had many. But while the service was friendly, it was painfully slow and at times our waiter seemed like he wasn't sure where he was. The entrees didn't live up to the appetizer and my pasta carbonara (a special) was dry and disappointing. My wife's salad was nothing special and our friends baked chicken was - well - baked chicken. The manager, hearing we were not thrilled about the carbonara comped them from our bill (on his own - we wouldn't have even considered asking) and so I want to like this spot and I will give it another go. The pizzas look great and probably should have been what we ordered and my guess is brunch or lunch is where the excel. What a shame=pretty decent food + terrible service. We met a friend for brunch here this past weekend, and since we arrived early the wait was under 10 minutes. We got sat at a table in the center of the dining room, and you'd think all those windows everywhere would be nice, BUT NO, not when the bright morning sun is shining DIRECTLY INTO YOUR FACE. Cannot believe that they wouldn't install blinds to rectify that issue, but after what happened next, we can hardly be surprised. We put in our coffee and food order. Waiting for the coffee...15 minutes..waiting for the coffee...finally ask the server and she's like oh yeah, we're brewing another pot. HUH?!?! This is a Sunday BRUNCH SERVICE: are you seriously that unprepared with coffee?? Then, waiting for our food...waiting...waiting...still waiting...we start seeing tables who were sat AFTER us getting up to leave because they've already eaten. We ask both the manager AND the server what's going on and they both tell us just a few more minutes. And finally 15 minutes after THAT, we get our food. Listen, it was fine, we're not going to complain about it, but we're certainly not going to puff it up and pretend that it was worth the one hour+ wait. Suffice it to say that if you ordered the turkey avocado club, the blueberry pancakes, and the (absurdly overpriced) chia pudding, you wouldn't be unhappy. Here's why this place should hire a new manager: we had a four year old with us, who for the record was behaving like an angelic champ considering the situation, and she was starving. We mentioned this to the manager and the server...and when they kept lying to us about a few more minutes, you know what else they could have done...ANYTHING!!! Like, brought her a piece of bread or a cookie. That would have been an altruistic gesture to acknowledge that waiting over one hour for pancakes is absurd. There was obviously a mess up in the kitchen or with our lackadaisical server, but she only thought to bring us out some apology cookies AFTER we ate as we were getting up to leave. Again: HUH??!?! Does nobody train in customer service anymore?? Anyway, we will not be back here ever again; if we had had a better service experience, this would have been four stars. Next time we will stick with the kiosk--and we recommend others do as well. read more

My daughter has been wanting to go here mainly because of the chocolate chip cookies hype. Reservations are recommended but we got in w out, early dinner. The place is very nice small. Staff was very accommodating and very nice, they know they have a nice unique place and it comes across. Waitress was great, the pastries delicious a bit pricey but not too bad. The shrimp risotto was very delicious, but the steak was excellent! Rib eye steak cooked perfectly, very tender and delicious. Small cut for the cost but the quality made up for it. Came here for Wednesday lunch with coworkers at 11am. There wasn't much of a wait, but it was very crowded inside. I did think the tables were set up too close together and I was almost sitting right next to another party and could hear their conversations. The interior was very aesthetic. I ordered the chicken enchiladas ($18.50). There was a good amount of food to split into 2 meals. Chicken was tender and the sauce and rice added to the enchiladas. I do think this place is pricey, especially when a salad costs more than my dish. The real star of this place are the chocolate chip cookies. The tomatoes with lemon jalapeño ranch were delicious! For mains we had the shrimp and risotto and the watercolor. We shared both and they were equally delicious! The shrimp and crab tasted fresh and were perfectly cooked. The watercolor had a bit of spice but it wasn't overwhelming. Such a cute spot in Austin! I've been there for both dinner and brunch, and while both were delicious, the brunch hits the spot. I got the avocado toast and the portions were generous and I loved the presentation of it! When the weather is nice, the outdoor area is perfect too. In the fall, they have a seasonal drink called the Figgy Collins, and both times I went, they were unfortunately out. I definitely want to come back when they have it again because it sounded amazing! Also need to try their cookies! I heard they are amazing! I loved Tiny Boxwoods' brunch and plan to go back for dinner. My sweet friend suggested we go there for our "women who have not hung out in awhile" meal. The House Migas dish was plentiful and tasty and my Vanilla latte delish! There is a gorgeous outdoor area where I envisioned a bridesmaid event or special celebration. Service was great and very attentive but our food took forever to arrive. I wondered if they'd lost our order! As we waited our server refilled water and topped off my wonderful Vanilla Latte. After years of wanting to eat at this restaurant my friend and I finally had lunch there. We love the ambiance, the overall feel is very calming and fresh. The interior gives off a modern farmhouse feel with white walls, tall ceilings and black metal frame windows that cover the walls, bringing the outside in. Their outside patio area is very pleasant and well manicured. It has a touch of French country feel as well in the back bar area where they had white tile walls and metal and glass shelving holding bottles of liquor and wine. It felt like we were in a restaurant in the Sonoma region. The noise level when we arrived on a weekday at 11 was very calm and quiet. Once 12:00 rolled around it was beginning to liven up from the lunch crowd. The food was great. I had the pesto grilled cheese, which whole good was a little more heavy on the pesto than the cheese which became slightly overwhelming as I reached the end of my meal. The baked goods appetizer course was wonderful! I highly recommend. The service was great as well, our waiter was very attentive and helpful in making decisions. They didn't rush us which was very nice. I have to say even the bathrooms were well decorated and felt more like a spa bath than a restaurant. Me and my husband came here for the first time for brunch. It did not disappoint. We each for the avocado toast - his with salmon and mine with bacon. BOTH were DELICIOUS! Our waitress was reserved but very attentive! Only negative was that she accidentally charged our credit card for another tables meals. She charged our card $70 and our ticket was only $43. Whoopsy! In a word, "DIVINE!" I surprised even my wife with this stop for a late breakfast / early lunch. My wife is a certified Sommelier and appreciated the thought that went into the wine list, and she was even attracted to the cocktail list. The staff were incredibly friendly, always smiling, and there's a background of low-key laughter that pervades the atmosphere in a great way I've simply not seen elsewhere. It's just a happy place. We ate at the bar with a lit fireplace to our backs--so nice on a cool Winter day. The vibe is simply pretty, rustic clean, and bright. There is outdoor seating too we'll try on a sunnier day that looks so inviting. I had migas while my wife had a Cobb salad (chicken substituted for the petite filet)...and we had a pastry tray, wine, and a cortado (espresso). My friend and I met for lunch today and we had good service, it's a lovely atmosphere, and there was no wait, however my friend ordered the Caesar Salad with chicken and was served a plate of lettuce with three croutons. When they brought the chicken it was a plate with a chicken leg she ha had to cut up herself. For this she paid $18...no wait, the menu says $18, she was charged $19 when the bill arrived. We ordered our usuals; the wood grilled artichokes, watercolor and shrimp risotto. Everything but the shrimp risotto was as gd as always; delicious, well seasoned and flavorful. The shrimp & risotto was so salty, it was inedible. The beurre blanc sauce on top of the already over salted risotto resulted in a $36 dish that went straight into the food waste bin.This is unacceptable from a restaurant with such high price tags. The ambience is very cute. There is a small courtyard and tables with umbrellas. It looks perfect for an afternoon tea party. The service was hit or miss. The server seemed to want to well but he overemphasized certain words and gestures. My friend and I both picked up on it and we weren't sure if he was trying to make the place seem very fancy or what. It's hard to explain but it was a little over the top. We wouldn't have minded it as much if we didn't have to repeatedly ask for small things like honey for our teas or a box for our leftovers. We both asked for honey for our teas and when it was finally brought out, it was such a small amount. He asked us if it was enough or if we wanted more. As we both had full pots of Jasmine tea, I felt like we were put in an uncomfortable spot by confirming that we did indeed want more. I wasn't sure if they charged for the extra honey but, either way, it didn't match up with the level of service that the server presented with his voice and gestures whenever he would check-in on our table. My friend had the avocado toast and I had the prosciutto and goat sandwich with sweet potato fries. The taste of both sandwiches was good but we each thought that our breads were too dry and a little uncomfortable to eat. At both of their price points, I thought they were both overpriced. RUN AWAY WHILE YOU CAN. The food is good, but nothing to make up for what this place lacks in service. This is a novel, but I HIGHLY recommend reading the entire story. Tonight was my close friend's 21st birthday and while we arrived feeling excited to celebrate, we left feeling neglected and taken advantage of. Our visit began with the host telling us to wait while they "got their shit together". That says a lot on its own. While we had made a reservation for 6 in advance, they wanted to split our table up into multiple groups because of how "booked" they were. We emphasized we wanted our party to stay together and were reluctantly brought to our table outside. Next, our waitress was cold to us the entire time and began by assuming we were lying about our friend's birthday. We showed her our IDs to order drinks, and she responded in a surprised tone "Oh! It actually is your birthday" moments after we said, "tonight is her 21st birthday". This was off-putting but we were still willing to look past it in an effort to enjoy the evening. Next, when we began to order our food we were informed that our party of 6 could only order a maximum of 3 pizzas due to "oven size". While we were confused by this, we began to adjust our order. Once one of my friends had figured out what they would order in place of the pizza they had planned on, the waitress informed us that she could "hack the system for us to order four pizzas" as long as we were willing to have one pizza arrive before the rest of the food. Trying to keep in good spirits, we agreed with her "hack" but when the last person at our table tried to order a fifth pizza, she was told that "five pizzas were pushing it" and she needed to choose something else to order. There was never any apology or better reasoning provided. Additionally, the pizzas came out on the same size plate as the other entrees, so we were left confused about how tiny their oven was to not be able to accommodate more than 3 pizzas for a party of 6. I wish I was making this next part up. The first pizza came out about 10 minutes before the rest of the tables order, as predicted. Then, all of the food, except one dish, came out at once. We waited for about five minutes before our waitress came back and asked about the one dish missing. We informed her it never came out so she went to check on it. She returned with SHOCKING news. Deadpanned, she looked us in the eye and said "It's a good thing I went back when I did, because the new guy was about to eat your burger!" We were speechless. My friend was left to wonder how much of her burger had come into contact with the 'new guy' before our waitress swooped in. Keep in mind, that while all of this was going on, our table was plagued with flies. After 30 minutes of fanning, the flies off our waitress brought out a candle and ended up leaving us with her lighter after the fan right behind us, extinguished the flame multiple times. Not our ideal dining atmosphere. Finally, we were beyond ready for the check. Our waitress brought out the bill and we asked to split it 6 ways. She said the maximum amount of times she could split the bill was 3. After everything, this was not that surprising, but still disappointing for a restaurant that charges $20-$40 for entrees. After all this, we asked about getting a birthday treat for my friend's birthday, and our waitress told us that the best they could do was to "maybe put a candle on a cookie". When asked if the cookie was free for the birthday girl, it was made clear that it would not be. So the best they could do for us was to possibly put a candle on a cookie that we purchased. Wow. This experience was awful. The food was pretty decent, but I don't think I could ever bring my friends or family to this restaurant in good conscience. The staff were rude and made us feel like we had inconvenienced them by being there. We felt belittled and frankly ignored. Our waitress would disappear for long periods of time, never apologized for anything during our entire visit, and was unhelpful, to say the least. If there really is a "3-pizza rule" perhaps they should include that on the menu as well as a heads up about splitting the bill for larger parties. This is the last place in Austin I would recommend going, theres plenty of good restaurants out there with much better service. If I'm being honest there's a shut-down Randall's next door and frankly, I bet you could find friendlier people over there. Seriously, DO NOT EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE UNTIL THEY HIRE NEW PEOPLE (PREFERABLY THOSE WHO WON'T EAT YOUR ORDERS WHILE YOU WAIT OUTSIDE WITH THE FLIES ON YOUR BIRTHDAY). read more
