Always wanted to hit the Tin Fish in the Gaslamp Quarter, but it turns out Tin Fish couldn't wait and came to me instead by opening this place in Oceanside where the old McDonald's was. E, I, E, I, O? Okay, just had to do that. First thing that struck me is that the staff here was extremely courteous and made me feel value as a customer. Next was a nice varied menu of which I picked the fish n chips where the wife picked the chowder. While I enjoyed the fish (kinda smallish, especially when comparing to Harbor Fish n Chips), I can't say I'm a fan of the cornmeal batter. That was just okay. Waffle fries were great though and take no back seat to Chick Fil A's in my opinion. Wife thought the clam chowder was just okay (I won't touch that stuff). Overall, it's a 2 edged sword eating there as far as location. Like certain areas of the Del Mar Fair, you have to keep an eye out and looking up to see if any passers-by feel like being spitters that day, and some of the beach folks were looking pretty sketchy as they walked by and talked to their invisible friends. The fish tacos are overpriced and not that great. The topping are cold but the fish is hot. For example, they use cheddar cheese on fish tacos- which is not they great. Cole slaw is good. Frozen yogurt is hollow inside- so you think your getting a lot but your really getting a small amount. I really enjoy the tin fish. I like how it's nestled underneath the pier for that feeling of seclusion, but you still get a great view. It's fun to watch the runners go by and the people on their bikes ride around while enjoying breakfast and some hot coffee. The food is served pretty quickly and I've yet to be disappointed with anything I've ordered. Their clam chowder is amazing and they also have bread bowls if you prefer. French fries always come out hot and salted just right. Their shrimp is also pretty delicious and crispy. I thought the crab cake was decent, but my husband didn't like it at all. It was a breaded and fried crab cake in a firm patty that didn't contain "lump" crab meat, but was still pretty good. My kids loved the chicken tender meal, but the pieces of chicken were very thin; they resembled chicken slivers. We were at the beach for a few hours & this place was right by us, it was a Weds (5/18) at noon so there was no line & plenty of seating. My husband got the fish/chips combo which he said was ok, I got the cup of clam chowder which was really good, our daughter got the shrimp combo & we thought that was the best meal, it was amazing. A variety of menu options and of the menu items we selected, they were are delicious. I'm quite hungry but don't feel up to a walk out to the place on the pier, so I check out this place to see if they serve breakfast. I've had fish and chips a number of times (in San Diego at Point Loma Seafood, Bay Park Seafood, Princess Pub among others) and this seven dollar and change (with tax) was without a doubt the best I have ever had. The fish was perfectly cooked and delicious, the cole slaw was superb (it's the vinegar based kind, not the mayo based), and the chips...Well, I wondered what the unusual taste was until I realized it was the taste of potatoes!! So, I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast while, pulling a filner, I ogled some young women working out in a group nearby.
