We come to NYC every year in search of the best food and cocktails in the city. When we discovered Thyme Bar in 2023 our search was over. The artistic creativity as well as the fabulous flavors of their cocktails were epic. Unfortunately, this year they have changed the cocktails and the whole vibe along with it. As someone that fancies speakeasies, Thyme Bar has a great vibe! It is a bit hard to find...but luckily my friend got there first and was able to locate it. The space is small, though beautifully decorated and would be great to meet with a friend or go on a date. If going with a larger party, reservations are a must. We only came here for drinks, and it is definitely a visually stunning experience. Prices are not for the faint of heart. Cocktails can average from $20-$30 a glass. One of the cocktails was a drink hung from a decorative branch secured to the hook on the ceiling. If sharing, you can even swing the drink, coconino rain, around to your companion (though don't swing too hard!). Some of the other drinks had candles in them or some fire element which was fun. Also, there was a time limit on our table so did feel a bit rushed towards the end. Overall, the presentation and theatrics are top notch, though I think the taste of some of the drinks could be a bit better (one of them did taste a bit like cough medicine). I feel like you are paying for more of the experience here but worth checking out once. read more

It's a speakeasy, tucked underneath a coffee shop. Very clever use of space. Very intimate setting. Dimly lit, but not so dark you can't see. Bar along one side, mainly 2 tops along the wall opposite the bar with a few areas towards the front/back that accommodate slightly larger parties. Every bartender is a server. Every server is a bartender. They collaborate and develop creative cocktails. Those that are better received remain on the menu. Those that aren't get cut. Constantly creating adding/dropping etc. Didn't try any of the food. Went for drinks after dinner. Some of the cocktails were sensational. Some I felt were simply too sweet. It's a fun place to try something new. Fun variety of creative glasses. Some they hang on chains from hooks. Lots of novelty. Hit and miss cocktails, but several are absolute home runs. Definitely a fun place to go to try something new and relax. Gets a little loud when the crowd builds up. But not too over the top. read more

This was the weirdest bar I've ever been to. We've tried to come here a few times over the years, just walking by and forgetting about it by the time we got home so we never made a reservation. Got lucky on a Sunday evening. The menu was different to say the least. My husband and I each ordered a drink and both were odd. I got one that was essentially a stout infused with some smoke that dissipated by the time it got to me and some ice cream that i wonder if it was freeze dried. Nothing was cold and there were no ice cream chunks in my drink though i saw him put it. 01/03/23: Where do I start, what an awesome experience. Never thought I would be that person to go drinking in a bar solo but that's what happened. Minding my business walking to the subway to obtain some extra steps for my Fitbit challenge when the thought hit me isn't there a speakeasy near by. Stopped on the sidewalk, whipped out my phone and headed to my yelp collection I recently started. Low n behold yup I'm a couple blocks away. Reached the address enter the building and figured since they said cellar I would take the elevator to the basement. Now people you would think as I push the down button nothing happened that should have been the first clue. However another lady was at the elevator she also stated the same. Any event elevator arrived she pressed her floor I tried to push B. Once again nothing so I assume maybe she pushed first. Wrong again nothing happened so I pressed lobby exit the elevator, called and hope someone picks up. Score, some one did , she stated exit the building turn left and enter the bakery next door. In my head..is this a scene playing from criminal minds.. Voila I arrived. Very pleasant hostess told me she will check and will be back. She entered a door and disappeared downstairs. Lord is she going to talk to the "insub"..lol. Upon her return I was told about a 5-6 minute wait. Times up, followed her down the stairs, the cutest little bar appeared before my eyes. I was seated by the bar, friendly greetings by servers and the bartenders. They explained the types.. but let's be honest I wanted that IG worthy picture of the swinging drink, although I was hesitant about the ingredients. While the bartender prepped drink waitstaff came over and placed a hook in the ceiling above me. Upon completion she brought my drink attached to the vine and hooked it so as it swang from the ceiling. Can you say YUUUUM. Especially the gooseberry looking lollipop dipped in spiked caramel. It's best described as a rum punch with nice punch. It was definitely spirit forward. Scrimping on alcohol was not done. But I believe as the drink size isn't plentiful and pretty pricy it needs to be strong. It's nice spot for possible date night, hang with friends, as the crowd wasn't very loud and the vibes very laid back, then again it was a Tuesday. I ordered Raventos cava and the guy pours me some cheap Prosecco. I asked him why and he casually tells me that they're out of Raventos and told me it's cava. I pointed out that the bottle clearly says Prosecco and he proceeds to tell me "it says Prosecco but it's really cava." I told him, "proseccco is Italian, cava is Spanish. It is not the same." Guy lies to my face and won't back down. He then tells me, "oh yeah, cava is Spanish but they make them in Italy too!" And then the just walks away. My husband is a certified level 2 sommelier and we were just dumbfounded. The waiter decides to randomly serve me something other than what I ordered, lies about it and when I confronted him, he doubles down?? This is fraudulent and dishonest. Naturally, I refused to drink the Prosecco and sent it back. We told him that cava can only made in Spain just like champagne can only be from the champagne region in France. He then just laughs it off and say his boss lied to him. Zero accountability, no apology. This really makes me wonder how often does this establishment serve customers the wrong drink and get away with it?? The desserts sucks and he also opened a can or beer at our table just to immediately realize it's the wrong one and then switch it back. I would definitely recommend visiting Thyme Bar for those who are really into creative cocktails / just looking for a unique date night idea. My friends and I were wanting to do the tasting menu for some time, and we finally made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7pm. I almost missed the entrance to Thyme, because I was looking for a storefront sign. There's a doormat outside that says Thyme. When you enter, the hostess will check you in and let you know if your table is ready. There's a couple of tables where you can wait if your table is not yet ready. Thankfully, ours was ready immediately, so we didn't have to wait at all. The hostess led us down a staircase (not sure if there is an elevator -- I didn't see one) to our table. Downstairs, the lighting is cozy and not too overpowering. Each table is near a lamp (great lighting for taking pictures of the cocktails). Since we were doing the tasting menu, we got an amuse bouche, two cocktails, one food plate, and one dessert (you get to pick your options from a double-sided menu). We had a great server who was super friendly, and we ended up choosing his three favorite cocktails without him having to tell us (Gin and Tonic, Manhattan, and Agrabah). Everyone gets the same amuse bouche, which is a delicious champagne-based drink that is served in a plate shaped like an oyster shell. The best part of the amuse bouche was this delicate red blob which resembled an egg yolk in texture, which tasted like a cherry. It pops in your mouth! For my other courses, I selected: 1. Noir - suuuuper smoky. I thought the presentation was nice, but I took a sip of my friend's Dell Iris and actually preferred that cocktail more in terms of taste. 2. Agrabah - beautiful presentation. You get a teapot which has dry ice fog coming out of the spot. It was cool that you could refill the cocktail since there was more in the teapot. However, in terms of taste, I preferred my friend's Gin & Tonic over the Agrabah. The Gin & Tonic is also cool since it's served in a bathtub and you can taste the bubbles after you take a sip. 3. Croquettes - I thought these were delicious and the portion size wasn't bad! However, the best portion size is DEFINITELY the sliders which come with a good amount of truffle fries. The truffle fries were SO good. 4. Raspberry Tart - The presentation was lovely and this came with a lot of raspberries on top, but I actually liked the chocolate shell dessert better than this one. I also tried the lemon meringue which I thought was too tart (but if you're into lemon, then get it!). I'm glad that I was able to visit, but I don't necessarily feel like I have to come again. It was a fun time, but the 90 minute time limit on the table definitely went by too quick! Personally I feel like 120 minutes would be best for those doing the tasting menu. Went over the weekend without reservation because unless you pay for the tasting menu you cannot get one, the place is very intimate and small, I don't think they can fit more than 30 people, that's how small it is. However the decor is beautiful and the drinks are good, probably better looking than made but definitely unique flavors and presentation. I got my name on the waiting list and were told to wait between 60 to 90 minutes, and that I will get a text when our table was ready, this was Friday at 7PM. Since the wait was so long we decided to go another bar nearby to hang out and have some food in the meantime. After more than 90 minutes waiting and not receiving the text, we went back to thyme to check with the hostess how longer the wait will be, but unfortunately she couldn't give us an estimate and that's when we decided to leave for good and not keep waiting because it was almost 9PM. Walking to our next destination about 5 minutes after we left, I got a text from the hostess, saying that a space opened up at the bar but only for 2 people and we were 3. At this point we just wanted to accomplish the mission of trying this bar so we went back, everyone was friendly and they were really trying their best, despite the situation. The spot we were assigned was a love seat at the bar, so it was extremely uncomfortable for 3 because one person was just left behind, they had a 3 people space with individual stools available at the bar but we were told it was for a 9PM reservation, so we made our best effort to fit in the small love seat but it was awful anyways. At 9.20PM the reservation haven't arrived and we were still very uncomfortable, we were told than when the guests next to us leave we could grab their chair, but it took them about 40 minutes to leave. So at this point this was just poor management, because we were waiting for more than 2 hours and they won't give us the empty chairs because of a reservation that was at this point 30 minutes late. The situation could have been managed very differently. Long story short, the drinks were good, very unique presentations, and flavors, infusions made in-house etc, but the overall experience with the wait and how uncomfortable we were during 3/4 of the time that we were there, don't make me want to visit again. If you are really that busy and full of reservations is better to tell customers that you are fully booked for the night because after more than two hours of waiting they still couldn't provide 3 seats for us to be comfortable and that ruined the entire experience. If you go, make a reservation and be ready to pay about $100 per person which I think is the price for the tasting menu, or simply don't go on a weekend, because at the end their drinks are good, but not as good to worth the hustle. read more

A cool little speak easy near the Eataly NYC flatiron. The bar is slightly hidden below the restaurant, but has a nice cozy space that's perfect for a friend or date. The cocktails are pretty price, around $25 a drink. They come as a pretty creative design. You never know what they'll come up with. The server kindly helped us pick a few recommendations out of the menu and we definitely enjoyed the tasty and strong drinks. I came with a friend around 10pm on a Wednesday night I was already mentally prepared for the price but still can't get over how one cocktail can cost $25+. For those who enjoy drinks on the more fruity side I definitely recommend dell iris - it's got a fresh flowery scent as well. I have mixed feelings on this place. I'll start with the positive which is that the drinks are truly one of a kind - I've never seen anything like them at other bars - and the one I had, "midnight snack" was delicious. At $22 it was actually one of the more affordable choices, so bear that in mind. Now for the ambiance, which I felt left much to be desired. While the concept of the speakeasy being hidden under the bakery was cool, the room itself looked kind of thrown together and didn't feel as elevated as it seemed to want to. It also had a pretty odd smell. The service was good, everyone was polite and attentive, but overall not a super memorable experience. My friend and I like to treat ourselves like the queens that we are. After a wonderful event at the NYPL re" Andy Warhol and Truman Capote, we were parched. We were here on a Thursday Night without a reservation. We had an hour wait and had to kill time in Eataly! It was worth the wait. You walk down the stairs to a magical, cocktail little secret in the city. People are drinking out of all kinds of glassware. The menu is intimidating. You don't know where to even start. We were seated at the bar and if you ask me, this was the best spot. We got to see all the cocktails being made. It is an art form. And the two bartenders took their time perfecting each one with edible spray paint, drilling holes in ice cubes and dipping gooseberries in white chocolate. I always seem to order old man drinks. My friend is like a woodland fairy and ordered the perfect hanging flower cocktail. "Coconino Rain" came in a beautiful flower shaped hanging cup, it hung from the ceiling with leaves on the rope. Very whimsical. The "Hana Ni Arashi" was the smoky Japanese whiskey drink. It would definitely put some hair on your chest. Not that that's the goal but it's that kinda drink. Mine was a sipper. Which let us have time for some bites. The Salmon Tartare is exquisite. The wasabi came on an airy cracker that looked like a pearl on Venus' shell. Everything tasted fresh and on point. The mini cilantro was amazing. The little bits of all the elements in one bite was playful and delicious. My absolute favorite of this experience was the "Saffron Crème Brûlée ! Oh man! Only my most favorite dessert of all time, elevated to perfection. Every bite was heavenly. It did take a long time to get the dessert and that is the only time I had trouble getting the staff's attention. In the end they helped me out. And I enjoyed my experience. Cocktails range from $16-$46. That is one cocktail. 18% gratuity is added to all bills. I of course added more to make it that 20%. Update: Downgraded to 3 / 3.5 stars bc it's been a bit loud the last 2 times I've come - the music choice is off. I don't think it's as intimate as before. Drinks imo are also slightly worse but still fun tho - the Coconino Rain is the one that hangs from the ceiling, Baines Douches is the bathtub, Blood Moon has water steam rolling out, Cloud is the cotton candy, Agrabah is the genie lamp. Drinks are fine / solid but sweeter than I'd like. Prob no longer ideal for 1st dates bc it's loud, but if you're many dates in, this has some canoodling potential (dim) and girls generally love the fun presentation. Not really a place I'd come back for the drinks themselves - more if I'm bringing friends and I know they'll like the fun presentations. Thyme Bar is a beautifully executed speakeasy with the most delicately and expertly crafted cocktails. It's located in the Flatiron in a pre-war cellar and has very mellow vibes with an elevated experience. You'll want to put this one on your list for NYC. Many drinks feature a complex presentation, with the level of complexity denoted on the menu with cocktails ranging from $19-$30 which is arguably very high. Figuring I might as well live it up while I'm here, I ordered the Chapata Fizz which is rated the highest level of presentation complexity and served in a terrarium inside 3 small bubbles, the top bubble billowing out puffs of dry ice over the entire concoction. The drink itself didn't blow me away and had little liquid, but it's a sight to behold. My gripe with this bar is that they offer both a mocktail called the Health Bloom AND a cocktail with the same name. This is just asking for trouble because often times people who don't drink don't want to specify that they are ordering a mocktail. My friend who has been sober for years ordered it, shortly realized that she was drinking vodka and had to leave because she felt sick. They really need to change the name of the mocktail or ask guests to specify when ordering. read more

Usually this place has been hard to find a spot, but to our surprise there was a good amount of space when we went. Ambience is pretty low key, definitely a nice place to chill or wind down. This cocktail bar specializes in aesthetically pleasing cocktails. Many times you'll see very aesthetic drinks which makes up for the lack of taste, but rest assure you won't find that as an issue here! I got the Chatpata Fizz which is a concoction of Mezcal, Chapata Soda, Pandan, and Lime. The drink is served in a terrarium pyramid box. The drink itself is well balanced in all its elements. Pandan is always an interesting flavor and it's perfectly meshed with the mezcal in this drink. I've also tried my friend's Flower Bomb and their Old Fashioned, both of which were really good. Amazing cocktail bar! From the ambiance to the service and drinks, it was truly an unforgettable experience. We had reservations for 4 at 9:30pm on a weekday and were seated at the bar. This is a fairly small venue - intimate set up with tables and bar seating, great for a date or small groups. We did the Euphoria experience and had the best time. For drinks I ordered Venus Eternity, Peach Silk Poppy Fizz and Sage and Savage. All were amazing. My favorite was Venus Eternity. The Sage and Savage was too strong for me since I usually prefer my drinks light, fruity and sweet, but I had no regrets trying it and neither did my friend who helped me finish it. For food I had the Black Truffle Grilled Cheese which came with tomato soup. It came out hot and was the perfect portion, I just wish it had more than a hint of truffle flavor. I had the Chocolate Zuccotta for dessert and didn't expect anything less from Patiserrie Chanson. It was so good and left me wanting more as usual. Since we sat at the bar, we had the opportunity to meet Jeremy, the curator behind this magical experience. He was so attentive to detail and ensured we all enjoyed our time/drinks. You don't come to Thyme Bar for a drink, you come to Thyme Bar for an experience. And an experience is what you'll get. The space is small but very thoughtfully decorated to create warm, romantic vibes, perfect for a date or a small gathering of friends. We had the Euphoria experience ($95, which included an amuse-bouche shot, a food item, dessert, and 3 of their other-worldly cocktails). The amuse-bouche shot was a citrusy shot, which was the perfect start to the experience. Then the food and drinks come out staggered and paced very comfortably, allowing us to enjoy each component fully. For my 3 cocktails, I chose the Venus Eternity (comes in a rose glass), the Ambre Nuit (comes in a birdcage), and the Chatpata Fizz (the famous drink that comes in a terrarium); each of the drinks were expertly crafted and extremely well-balanced. After serving us our first drinks, the beverage director Jeremy even came by to let us know we were welcome to replace any of our drinks if we didn't like it - GREAT attention to the customer experience! But of course, everything was delicious and nothing needed replacing. For food, I had the tuna poke bowl, which was fresh and tasty but came with an unexpected sprinkling of chili flakes, which caught me off guard and caused a short coughing fit when a chili flake hit the back of my throat (not a cute look ever but especially during COVID!) Note to management to consider making note of the chili flakes on the food menu. For dessert, I had the strawberry rose eclair which was PHENOMENAL - the perfect amount of strawberry flavor and sweetness and the perfect end to an amazing experience! read more

My husband took me here as a surprise for my birthday and we had their tasting menu (only available on reservation). My friend and I were looking to grab cocktails after our dinner nearby and so we stumbled upon this place and I was very impressed. It's located downstairs inside a restaurant so kind of gives a little bit of a speakeasy vibe. It's a pretty small but quite intimate and low lit, so perfect for a date night also. The staff was very welcoming and nice and the bartenders are very talented making gorgeous cocktails that are also super tasty. We also ordered their truffle Parmesan fries to snack on and they were nice and crispy, you could actually taste the truffle. The drinks are a bit pricey, but I guess you're paying for the quality and the appearance so it's not the end of the world. I'm a visual person so I liked seeing their zany ways of gorgeously presenting cocktails as works of art (not shooting for subtlety, which is just fine IMO). Drink I had was pretty stiff with a matching stiff price tag - just so you know what to expect. Walk-ins only unless you want to do the set menu, which looks amazing but I don't know if I can hold that many drinks anymore? Classy-trendy vibe. Our reservation here included an amuse bouche, 2 drinks, a small plate, and dessert. The amuse bouche was amazing! Definitely one of my favorite parts of the evening. The drinks have wonderful presentations. The drinks change from time to time but my drinks included the abstract mandarin and a drink that mimicked a bubble bath (I forgot the name). Both drinks were made well but my favorite was the abstract mandarin. It was light and mandarin notes were perfect. The food is the reason I took off a star. My friend got the cheese board and the bread was stale. I got the truffle fries, which were also okay. For my dessert I got the saffron creme brulee. We forgot to make reservations for a Saturday night but figured we would try to walk-in. When we got here the staff told us there was no availability but there would likely be a table open in about an hour. I gave her my phone number and she said she would text us. After about 40 minutes I got the text that our table was ready. When we went back we had our vaccine cards and IDs checked and then were led down a set of stairs to the bar. So Thyme bar is known for their cocktail presentations which are a bit off the norm. On their menu they even indicate how elaborate a cocktail set-up is. My friend and I were set up at the bar so we were able to see a lot of the preparations. For ourselves, we decided to start with the more elaborate to the less elaborate. The cocktails ranged from about $18 to $30. For the first round we had the The Chatpata Fizz and the Primrose & Rye. The Chatpata Fizz started off with a lot of smoke and was super impressive looking when they placed it in front of me. The drink was refreshing and came with a piece of crispy salmon skin. The only problem was the metal straw was a little difficult to maneuver in the strange stacked pebble shaped glass. My friend's Primrose & Rye looked more like a table decoration but was also an interesting drink. For the second round, I had the Bloomist Cloche which was much easier to drink than my last one. The ice cube was turned into a popsicle with chocolate. My friend had the Gynoecium Old Fashioned that was a really unique tasting old fashioned and came with a little dessert. For the last round, we decided to go for the more "basic" drinks. I really liked the HWYL cocktail but it was too tall. The "glass" it was in was about a foot tall and then you used a straw. I had to keep tilting it downwards to try to drink it. As for the Eucalyptus Watercolor, when reading the description I thought it was too strange but it blended nicely and nothing stuck out as a weird flavor. All in all, we spent way too much here on cocktails but it was a very unique experience. We also order fries which were crisp on the outside but very soft on the inside. I think there was also a 90 minute time limit as the waiter very courteously informed us as we neared it. So if you decide to come here, keep that in mind. Also, it is a very intimate setting so I would not recommend it for large groups. They would probably have to split you up anyways read more

Super fun cocktail bar that manages to stand out from the legions of cocktail bars in this city by their insanely creative presentations of the drinks, some of which are complex to the point of requiring instructions on how to drink them. The "tasting menu" is a great way to experience their fun drinks and food options. The food menu is vegan-friendly. Not sure how often I will be coming back here because of the slightly high prices for pretty small amounts of food and drinks, but it is definitely worth coming for the experience at least once. read more
