During the five years I lived in Kearney, I enjoyed a lot of the local restaurants, Thunderhead Brewing being among the top of the list. My son and I got together there often and ordered The Angry Greek pizza and one of your craft beers. We always enjoyed it and never had a negative experience there. Great service! Beers were authentic brewed to style. A large variety available. The Scottish ale was delicious, as well as the Belgium ale. Cans available for purchase, grab some for home. A must stop if you appreciate quality beer and are in the Kearney area. read more

This is a great pizza brewpub. The beer is really good- flights are available too so you can try them all! We went just after St Patrick's Day and they had a special hard mint tea, which was green and tasty like a sweet mint tea. Really interesting and delicious! We went home with Chinook IPA in the can. Pizza is straightforward and they have many topping options- we had bacon artichoke- the bacon was crispy, which was great! Our kids ate the entire 10in cheese pizza- perfect kid style with 'no green stuff'. Staff is so friendly and the ambiance is sports bar that's kid friendly. Highly recommend! read more

A Tuesday night, there was a grand total of three other customers in the place, sat down, was handed a menu, then radio silence for the next ten minutes. Four employees, including the guy who gave me the menu, standing behind the bar doing god only knows what, got tired of waiting and left. Very limited menu, so I knew what I wanted after about 1 minute, but I guess they'll never know. Definitely not deserving of the 4 stars it showed on yelp. read more

When I haven't been to Kearney in a while, Thunderhead is one of the things I miss the most. It's a comfortable, airy spot to have a great beer, and no one can touch the perfection of a Thunderpie. We stopped for the night in Kearney, and figured it would be fun to check out a brewery while we were there. This was a good stop, but the beer certainly left a lot to be desired. The seltzer was overly sweet and truly just tasted like syrup that you'd find in a snow cone or something like that. I wouldn't get the seltzer again. The food was surprising, much better than I expected (although it wasn't anything that'll totally blow your socks off), but it was better than the beer. The space is huge - you shouldn't have to worry too much about securing a spot to sit, since there's an upstairs and a downstairs. The highlight of this place for me...how cheap it all was! Three of us had a full meal and two beers each, including a generous tip, it was $60. Not bad! read more

Beer: As expected after reviewing untapped. Not going to write home but some good and strong flavors. Food: Pizza: I think this dough is undercooked or it's a thin crust that is meant to be eatten with a knife and fork. Lots of salt in the crust which I personally enjoy. Nachos: Sour cream and salsa come in the side. Nice distribution of cheese, but about half as much meat as I wanted. Covid safety: Does not exist. Tables and seats within six feet of each other. We were the only folks I saw the whole time wearing masks. That includes 0 wait staff wearing masks or trying to be socially distant. Would not recommend for someone who is traveling through and concerned about Covid. read more

There was nowhere for us to be seated, so we were asked to go sit upstairs. Because of this we were unable to check out the lively main level. The atmosphere was extremely quiet upstairs and while there were about two other larger groups gathered, it just wasn't lively like downstairs even with televisions on. Our initial server was really friendly and brought us menus, water, and each of us a taster as we were undecided on what to order brew wise. We ordered an appetizer of artichoke dip as well as a pizza to share. First, the appetizer arrived by a different server and my boyfriend noticed that they had been sitting in the booth behind us playing on their phone. This server also seemed annoyed when we asked for more napkins as they only brought two whenever they brought out the appetizer. The pizza arrived and it was good. A huge turnoff for us was not only this server sitting on their phone but mainly because the largest of the two groups that had been there when we arrived left about ten minutes after we were seated and it needed to be cleaned up and was still sitting their unclean when we left almost 45 minutes later. This same server got an annoyed when my boyfriend asked him for the check so we could pay to leave. read more

After reading extensive Yelp reviews of dining spots in Kearney, we chose Thunderhead Brewing. Large beer selection. We ordered salad, appetizer pretzel, and pizza. The pretzel was the star of the meal, covered in butter, hot and delish. The salad was basic and fresh. The pizza was meh. The crust was soggy in the middle, and the cheese and toppings were sparse. Ambiance was nice, including music. It felt like a spot for locals. Gives travelers a spot to see old downtown Kearney. Service was very good. read more

This was a great experience. The bartender was very personable and the drinks were a great price and quality. My wife and I split a plate of nachos and a house salad and it was a plenty of food for a small dinner. I would recommend this place to anyone in or driving by Kearney. read more

Between five beers, the flavors all died on my tongue pretty immediately. The prairie peach wheat was my favorite along with the grapefruit IPA. The service was unbearably slow. We started the evening at a popular burger/pizza pub. We had 1 beer, but the rotating beers were underwhelming so we left without ordering food. Actually, the manager at the restaurant we left, comped our beer and recommended Thunderhead because of the food. Thunderhead had a good beer selection. I had dunkel and my wife had a wheat beer. We had a hot pretzel with the first beer and a homemade pizza with the second. The service was ok, but we had a long day on the road so we preferred to be left alone. We only pass through Kearney a couple times a year, but Thunderhead will be a new regular stop. read more

So glad we came here for dinner. Food and beer was good, especially for being in a smaller city. Service is pretty relaxed. We sat ourselves for dinner. Beer menu is on a nearby TV screen. They had many choices, way more than a lot of small breweries I go to in Denver. I was quite impressed, and they usually have their staples. I went with their standard IPA and I approve - all American beer for sure. We both had calzones for dinner and a small salad. The dough is amazing, so yummy and chewy in a good way. Salad had fresh ingredients. Not a fan of tomatoes and black olives, but the lettuce mix and mozzarella cheese were great! Parking is ample with street parking easy to find in the area. Bathrooms are nothing fancy, but CLEAN! That's all I ask for in a bathroom. If all you want for dinner is a pizza and a food beer, I recommend coming here. read more

Stopped here for food and drinks during a cross country road trip. The drinks were great! Some of the best we've had on our trip, very flavorful and unique options. The grape hard seltzer was one of a kind! Our server was also awesome, very attentive and friendly. We had the chicken spinach alfredo pizza for dinner which was pretty good. We really liked the crust but it was a little soggy. I think it was the tomatoes that threw things off, if those were replaced with sun dried tomatoes it would be way better! In a town with limited quality, independent businesses for a visitor, this is a standout. The beers we tried -- a chocolate porter and coffee stout -- would have been good at any microbrewery in Denver. The pizza was not amazing, but definitely worth the $19 to feed 3-4, with high quality cheese, a variety of toppings, and thin chewy crust. The only thing holding back the fifth star is the speed. Having a hungry kid who had spent all morning on I-80, we ordered the simplest appetizer: a hot pretzel. We received it exactly 30 minutes after ordering, alongside the pizza, which rather defeated the purpose. Service was generally friendly, but no comment or apology about this. read more

Enjoyed this brewery. I had the New England IPA - First Frost, I liked it. Out of curiosity I tried the El Jefe Jalapeño beer and it was good as well, not too much bite! Solid brew pub. We were here the night before the 2017 eclipse and I think they were greatly understaffed. That being said, we had a good time. The four of us shared the GIANT nachos and the cheese breadsticks and enjoyed several different pints of beer. The place was packed and we had to wait a bit to find a seat. I stayed in Kearney when driving along I-80 cross-country and was excited to try a local restaurant along the way, so I ventured into Thunderhead Brewing. The vibe here is casual, relaxed, local, and a touch of "dive." I'm not a beer drinker, so I landed on their red cream soda, which was underwhelming. It tasted a little chemically and not what I was expecting. For dinner, I ordered the chicken alfredo pizza, which was also very underwhelming. The chicken on the pizza was bland, flavorless, and very dry. The rest of the pizza was also pretty muted tastes, with the exception of the onion. Overall, it was very bland.
