Always, always a huge fan here. We come back for two reasons, the subs (duh) but the service from everyone.

After having my review deleted due to flagging by biased Yelp users a couple years ago, I'm re-visiting and writing this whole thing. This review is based on my experiences back in fall of 2009 just fyi. I do not like Thundercloud. I have been to both this location and the South Lamar location. My experiences at the South Lamar location are explained in that review. As for this location, it's the same deal. I'm all for local business, local food and Austiney places, but hygiene and food standards have got to be important too. Along with the other location, I got food poisoning from them as well, which made for a really fun night. I know that TONS of people go here with no issues, but that, unfortunately, wasn't the case for me. The first time I went, I got food poisoning. I decided to try it a second time because my friend insisted on coming here. After handling my friend's money, the guy came back and started to get ready to make my sandwich and asked what I wanted. I asked if he could wash his hands first since he just handled money (AND in the fall) and he acted like I had asked him to climb Mount Everest. I explained I got sick last time I ate here and he said that it could've been anything, people get sick all the time... Hi, are you my doctor? No, I didn't think so. Thanks.. The food itself does taste good and fresh, but it is a bit expensive and you have to pay extra for each additional vegetable. The sandwiches are also just a bit small for me (I eat a LOT). Also, not gonna lie, those jingles on the radio are incredibly obnoxious. Like I said, I love to support local business, but I won't be coming back here again. read more

If you haven't been to a Thundercloud, it's an Austin institution that's been around for over 20 years and they pride themselves on using fresh ingredients. Good for them, and good for you! I've had different experiences at the different locations, but we ordered a six sandwich to go order here and everything was perfect and ready when we got there. I felt like I was in an episode of Portlandia too - the dude had such a big beard that he had a hairnet over it. Good job beard man. They now offer gluten free bread, which makes me over the moon happy!!! Thank you Thundercloud for identifying the needs of your community and providing a product that doesn't suck at all. I am always happy when a place offers a gluten free option, but it's so annoying when it just plain sucks. The bread here is up to par and will please any non-gluten eater. Fave sandwiches are Roast Beef & Avocado, California Club, and the Nada Chicken (I don't think that's GF though). read more

This place is better than Tucci's Subs and Cafe 1628 but that isn't really saying too much. It is more professionally run and the staff is on the ball. What I didn't like was that all the cold cuts were precut and portion controlled with separators. A sandwich should be a work of art created by the craftsman and not something predetermined by the accountant. That style is the trademark of Subway which shouldn't be replicated. I thought their Big Paul sandwich was pretty good-it's big and varied enough to satisfy. The tuna fish salad and roast beef with avocado sandwiches were lackluster. Among the sandwich places Thundercloud is worth a try. read more

these are some pretty tasty sandwiches...I've only ever eaten here once, because if I feel like eating a sub, i'll usually just make it at home, but we tried the italian and the turkey and they were both really good. I know a lot of the people that work here, too and they're all really nice! :) read more

I love this place!! The sandwiches are always fresh, the staff are super friendly and they always get my order right. This place has been a saving grace on more than one occasion when we couldn't be bothered to make dinner. For the larger appetite, ask for double meat. * Better service and consistency than the William Cannon location. Drive the extra few minutes for a better experience. read more

Love the sandwiches but always feel kind of unwelcome by staff. Got two sandwiches and employee took gloves off after the first and didn't put any back on for second. Im not supper worried about customer service but it's hard to look past food safety. read more

Just a little underwhelming. I ordered the turkey samich with veggies and extra meet. While I paid for extra meet there wasn't even enough meet to cover the entire samich. Both ends were over an inch long of nothing. Even had I not ordered extra toppings I still expect the full length of the bread to be covered with something. Always good, always tasty. Friendly employees and tons of parking available. Easy to get to. Fresh, yummy ingredients and they're fast!

LOVE this spot! This is a regular lunch spot of mine and I don't think I will ever get tired of it. My favorite sandwich is the California Club and the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. The service at this location is always outstanding. The staff is friendly and attentive, always working very quickly to make your meal. Sometimes the lunch rush causes a pretty long line, but the staff always finds a way to move people through at a pretty steady pace. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE Thundercloud. I love the laid back Austin feel of the staff. I love the freshness and the love that goes into my sandwich. The employees always seem happy and eager to help at every location I've been to....I've been to A LOT. I bring all visitors to T-Cloud! It's a nice lil piece of Austin Goodness! I've always loved Thundercloud over other sandwich shops. I do have an issue with this location - The curbside service app does not work. When you arrive you are supposed to press the "I am here" button on the text they send you. It never has worked for me and I have always had to call and let them know when I've arrived. No biggie! Until they do not answer the phone. After several attempts to call, I walked inside and the two employees who were both talking to the same ONE (count it, 1) customer, said, "Oh that was you calling?" I tried to hold my temper but when my husband only had 5 minutes to eat before he had to leave for a meeting, I decided I finally needed to complain about their "convenient app" for curbside pick-up. read more

SUB-PAR Thundercloud sub location on W Slaughter. Sorry guys, but this is the worst Thundercloud I've ever eaten at! Where do I start? Tables were not clean at 11am and the food was barely adequate. Portion control was ridiculous stingy with both the chicken salad and egg salad subs just a minimal smear of ingredients. The meatball sub was fairly dry. Had to go back to the counter to get the jalapeños we ordered, too. Only rated 2 stars cause the music playing was amazing and the ingredients fresh, just teeny portions! Really a shame. And nowhere near the cool experience like the Riverside Drive or other locations. We been enjoying thundercloud subs since the 70s, and this location sucks. read more

Earlier today my girlfriend and I I was helped by Benjamin I could tell it was slightly busy but I asked him to make the sub that he would usually make for himself. Watching him make the sandwich was weirdly satisfying knowing how clean and precise he was with placing everything and keeping up the chatter. (I can't believe I've met someone else allergic to onions!) The sandwich was literally the best I've had. The fact that I was able to take it home and it wasn't slightly messy or sloppy or damp makes the little extra drive worth knowing thats the care going into my food and hopefully others.! I am not really big on sandwiches, but my boyfriend kept on insisting me to try this (his fav sub place). We both ordered the California club.. hands down best sub place I've had. You can tell the ingredients were fresh and the dough was light and wasn't overpowering like some places. Like I said, I'm not a sub person but I will definitely stop by here again!! read more

Ordered one small sandwich online. It was supposed to be ready at 12:49. I walked in at 1:02 and it still wasn't ready. The gentleman making the sandwich was talking and not focused on making anything. The reason I'm giving two stars and not one is because the sandwich is actually really good and there was a guy that did keep trying to help me get my sandwich. So if you don't mind waiting past the time your food should be ready, order online. If you do I'd suggest just going in and ordering your food that way you're not disappointed. read more

Great subs. The perfect alternative to the boring usual suspects. They offer plenty of relatively helathy options to enjoy. They have lots of Austin flare, speaking of which try out the Austin Club its great. read more

I had a craving for an egg salad sandwich and a friend told me this Thundercloud made good egg salad sandwiches. I found the person who helped me at the counter to be very nice. The guy taking my order and putting the sandwich together was super accomodating. I wanted a hint of pickles and he sliced them super thin and was very attentive to all the ingredients that I wanted. They have WiFi and he made sure I got the code. For me, the sandwich could have been less dry but I attribute that to my personal situation of "dry mouth" after treatment. I would go back. Oh, and I am a clean freak and this place was super clean. I didn't find the music overly loud or the staff overly "smart ass" as you might think from other reviews. I would go back if I wanted a sandwich. They also have a table outside if the weather permits. read more

Really love their food and the Thundercloud sauce is very nice, however this location has their in store music very loud, so you can barely hear what the person behind the counter is saying. The people are nice but it's kind of annoying not being able to hear what they are saying or having to yell your order to them. Their are plenty of people working here and you'll never have to wait, but still the music is very annoying, I will go back but it's getting tiring with the loud music. There are better Thundercloud's around in my opinion. read more

Love this place and love the idea of not counting your toppings like your other competition. I decided to try the one local to my house. Working from home need quality food and quick! No surprise it was just as I had hoped... crunch, fresh, mouthwatering and knock my socks off "yummy". My only complaint would be is where is the other half of the egg? Worth every trip ... This T-cloud holds true to my idea of a "real" T-cloud sub shop, which is the RIVERSIDE location... ( I feel riverside is the best )... but this place also only seems to hire young, cheerful tattoo collectors, and the food is fresh and tastes clean... couldnt be happier to have them in my hood... a few of the other locations are not QUITE as good, though Im a fan of them all... if T-cloud subs would go national, they would put subway out of business in about 48 hrs I think... and do us all a favor...TIP THE SANDWICH MAKERS GENEROUSLY... you want to keep the good ones happy to be working there for us. read more

The bread sucks. Not baked fresh on site, instead in bags stacked up on the counter. Everything else was fine, but when the bread sucks it kills the whole experience. Bummer read more

Love me some T-clouds. Just moved back to austin from a 7 year hiatus in SA and had to make sure I lived within a mile of the nearest thundercloud. This one is my go to, and so far service is great. Their chicken salad is the best! read more

Subs are good, service is below average, and they still hand you the paper the get a tip

I think these guys make some of the best subs around. The ingredients always taste fresh and the employees are laid back. These subs are way better than anything Subway or Quiznos are doing and cost just as much or less. My only complaint is I wish they were larger because they're so good. read more

Personality of workers is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a very happy, talkative "sub technician," and sometimes you get one who clearly doesn't want to be there. Not really a big deal. Sub size is very small compared to competitors like Jersey Mikes and Firehouse Subs--but that's more a ding against the corporate chain and not so much this particular location. Sub selection is good and everything tastes reasonably fresh. My one big disappointment with this location is how filthy it is. Every time I come, my arms stick to the tables. Tabletops and seats often have food on them. (As I write this, a worker swept off some food debris with their hand and moved on.) Walls everywhere are dirty, bathroom is nasty, surfaces everywhere, including cheap painted plywood booths and worn seats--just kind of grosses me out when I come. They clearly don't put much time or money into aesthetics and cleanliness.... so I do wonder about sanitary issues with my food handling. But ya know what? If you have a strong stomach, just order ahead via their convenient online app, grab your tasty sub and get out before you contract anything. read more

This is only the second time I've been to Thundercloud. The first visit was at the old location on Lamar that was in front of the Alamo Drafthouse. I remember I got the Texas Tuna, but didn't walk away impressed. Since then I've stuck with Subway and Jimmy John's. Today that all changed. I wanted the Veggie Delight, but was kinda pissed that additional veggies cost more (I'm that person at Subway that gets all the veggies on their sandwich). However, additional veggies weren't needed on this sub. The flavors and items that come on it are more than enough. I absolutely loved the sandwich! The veggies were fresh and not overly pickled/salted/frozen like the ones at Subway. I think I've officially dumped both JJ's and Subway. The quality at Thundercloud has given me a new perspective on how I want my subs from here on out... read more

I went here when I was really hungry and wanted a good sub sandwich. The sandwich was okay, but had like two slices of meat and one slice of cheese. So, if you're looking for plenty of bread, but not so much meat...this is your place. read more

I'm new to Austin, and Thundercloud Subs has been a welcome surprise. As a mostly vegetarian, I hesitate to go to most sub shops, but Thundercloud makes it tasty and easy for my whole family. The Nada Chicken Parmesan is a fave. read more

I am a die hard Thundercloud fan but this location is awful....really unfriendly employees. My husband and I were at this location about a month ago and had a really bad experience with one of the employees and we vowed to never go back to this location. I emailed our complaint to the corporate office and they sent us an apology and some free coupons which was really cool. read more

Business seems slow at night. I got attitude a couple times from Thunderclouds for no reason. I worked in restaurants for 15 years. But I get treated like some spoiled kid. But I'm actually 43 years old but don't look like it. After reading another comment, and realizing that we are in a college town area. I should have known that I shouldn't expect reliable service with teenage kids working. read more
