According to locals, ThunderCloud Subs is an Austin staple. But, for my first visit, it completely missed the mark. I ordered the foot-long California Club, and it was the saddest sub I've ever had. The lettuce was micro-shredded, clumped together and translucent, there was just one tiny chunk of avocado, the bread looked lifeless, and the meat and cheese were a train wreck. We always love Thundercloud's food, but good grief the incompetence is outstanding. Nothing is ever ready even close to when they say it will be. We picked up our order and two sandwiches were on the wrong bread, one had two ingredients it shouldn't have had on it, and the additional topping chosen for that sandwich was as on a different one. Just a nightmare if you had allergies. One sandwich had two ingredients total (bacon and egg salad) and it was missing one... Not the first time we've had a bad experience at this location. 'Funky Austin' vibe with friendly staff who told me about their two most popular 'named' sandwiches. I tried The Austin with their smoothie named 'Blue', made with blueberries and banana. Another dark berry but can't remember which one for sure. Delicious! Highly recommend over the usual Subway or other national chains. These folks are running a cool, quality sandwich shop! We were here today for lunch and it was great. We had 2 large sandwiches 1 club 1 Italian both on wheat with chips and potato salad. The sandwiches were full of multiple meats and veggies the potato salad had good size pieces of potato with onions and perfect amount of flavor. I love Thundercloud, but the staff always seems a little too 420 friendly. If you've seen the movie Zootopia, the employees move about as slow as the sloths at the DMV. As slow as they move, you'd think they would at least get the order right, but while I was waiting for my food, they had to completely remake an entire order because they didn't read that things were supposed to be on the side. On top of that, they messed up my order by giving me smalls instead of larges and were 15 min past my pickup time. Some previous staff that worked there had a similar snails pace, but they were at least friendly. This staff just seemed dead inside and didn't seem to care about the getting customers in and out quickly. I propose they change their motto from "Fresh, fast and healthy" to "Slow, wrong and high." read more

We've lived in this area since August and this Thundercloud has been our go to for quick meals. Lately, it's been a lackluster experience. They've shorted me on a cup of soup twice, filling the cup just over half. Today, my soup cup was full but they're still out of the garlic balsamic and had to scrap the bottom of the tub for bleu cheese dressing (it was gross/oily, I didn't eat it). Gentleman who made my Nada chicken salad said it was labor intensive and didn't understand why I wanted a scoop of egg salad when there's a boiled egg included. I have wanted to check out thundercloud subs ever since I moved here about two months ago. I think it was mainly the name for me on why I wanted to check it out. Anyway my husband and I stopped in today and each got a sub to go. I ordered a small roast beef and avocado sub on wheat. The bread tasted fresh and so did the ingredients. I even tried a little bit of thunder sauce which I think it made my sub. My husband ordered the NY Italian sub. It was tasty and contained ham, salami, capicola, peppers, & oregano. The only complaint if I really had one was the employee. He was a little slow and we never had been there. It would have been nice to have been explained the ordering process since it was different than the usual sub places like Subway. read more

I was parked outside the store for a long time waiting on a doctors appointment and couldn't help notice this place's customer service. To the gentleman with the backwards hat and salmon colored shorts that was running around and helping customers with pick up/to-go orders: BRAVO. Not only is hot as hell outside, but he had a huge line of customers and kept his composure. He was cracking jokes and really making everyone forget they were sweatily waiting for their food. This place is up the street from my house and now that I've witnessed what kind of customer-service oriented people they have during a freaking pandemic, I will definitely be ordering my next sub from here!! read more

This is my local Thundercloud, as it's 1/2 mile from my house. I love this location because I love eating subs made by people who sound like they just smoked a big fatty. I mean it. The "sandwich artists" here or whatever they call them at T-Cloud are pretty awesome and always have the best things to say to make me smile. Like a little bonus in addition to my meal. I have seriously eaten the same sandwich three times this week- it's that good: small turkey & avocado on wheat, lettuce, tomatoes, t-sauce (oil, vinegar & spices) & American cheese (but only 1 slice cut in 1/2). I don't know why it's so amazing, maybe it's the freshness, or because it's an Austin-based business, or the friendly people who serve it to me. Doesn't matter why, I just know it's good. read more

This place is better than Tucci's Subs and Cafe 1628 but that isn't really saying too much. It is more professionally run and the staff is on the ball. What I didn't like was that all the cold cuts were precut and portion controlled with separators. A sandwich should be a work of art created by the craftsman and not something predetermined by the accountant. That style is the trademark of Subway which shouldn't be replicated. I thought their Big Paul sandwich was pretty good-it's big and varied enough to satisfy. The tuna fish salad and roast beef with avocado sandwiches were lackluster. After having my review deleted due to flagging by biased Yelp users a couple years ago, I'm re-visiting and writing this whole thing. This review is based on my experiences back in fall of 2009 just fyi. I do not like Thundercloud. I have been to both this location and the South Lamar location. My experiences at the South Lamar location are explained in that review. As for this location, it's the same deal. I'm all for local business, local food and Austiney places, but hygiene and food standards have got to be important too. Along with the other location, I got food poisoning from them as well, which made for a really fun night. I know that TONS of people go here with no issues, but that, unfortunately, wasn't the case for me. The first time I went, I got food poisoning. I decided to try it a second time because my friend insisted on coming here. After handling my friend's money, the guy came back and started to get ready to make my sandwich and asked what I wanted. I asked if he could wash his hands first since he just handled money (AND in the fall) and he acted like I had asked him to climb Mount Everest. I explained I got sick last time I ate here and he said that it could've been anything, people get sick all the time... Hi, are you my doctor? No, I didn't think so. Thanks.. The food itself does taste good and fresh, but it is a bit expensive and you have to pay extra for each additional vegetable. The sandwiches are also just a bit small for me (I eat a LOT). Also, not gonna lie, those jingles on the radio are incredibly obnoxious. Like I said, I love to support local business, but I won't be coming back here again. read more
