I have been to many of the Thundercloud locations around town, but this is by far my favorite for one reason: Kassie! She totally ROCKS! She knows my entire family's order by heart. And she can sling 3 - 4 sandwiches in the time it takes most everybody else to make 1. Okay, it helps that it's really close to my house. And both my kids like the food (rare enough by itself). And it's affordable. And fresh, fast and healthy! Everybody here is friendly, and even if they don't know my name, they recognize me as a regular. The only time I have ever had a complaint was when I was in there with my two pre-teen girls and they had some really loud music on that was dropping F bombs right and left. I'm no prude, but that wasn't exactly family-friendly fare in the middle of the afternoon. Probably one of the most expensive, lack luster and bitter sandwiches of my life. I came in based off of the reviews and I deeply regretted it the second I walked in the door. The actual establishment looks like they have given up on it. I could have saved half my money going to heb and buying what's in this sandwich because it is literally nothing special at all. I HAD to have a Nada the next day. The homeless guy wasn't around, so I skipped that part. THAT'S the service you get. VERY personable staff. I love each and every one of them. 360 Nueces Downtown location is horrible!!! This place has gone down the drain over the last 3 months or so. Not sure what happened but it needs to be addressed. Service is very slow at all times, not just between noon-1 p.m. They have 4-6 people behind counter and only 2 are actually working. Today I waited 10 minutes before someone help me and there was only 1 person ahead of me. As I ate my lunch I noticed all the employees left the counter and made a customer wait 12 minutes to come help her and this is because she yelled hello I need help!! read more

This is my favorite Thundercloud location for a variety of reasons. 1) They consistently make the best California Club I've ever eaten. They're not stingy with toppings, either. I always get black olives added to my sandwich and they fill that thing with olives. That's basically five stars right there. 2) The staff are all super friendly. They'll chat with me while making my sandwich and I've never once gotten someone who was grumpy or unpleasant. I started coming so much that I'm pretty sure they all started to recognize me, too. 3) The staff are also super fast and efficient. Even during the crazy lunch rush, I'm never waiting for more than 10 minutes to get a sandwich. 4) Seriously, the best California Club every. single. time. And they have Miss Vickie's jalapeno chips! 5) I love this place so much, I know the Thundercloud jingle by heart. This both concerns and amuses my friends. Best sub shop in town. Not that others can't make a great sandwich, but Thundercloud is how Austin does subs. Lots of places have that Austin feel, but this is a successful chain that has been here decades. They have a good weekly special normally. Some sandwich off the regular menu that is discounted. I either get that Stores all over town, but sad they don't have more of an east-side presence. read more

I like the California Club but have come to the conclusion that I like any sub with a healthy serving of guacamole. The long lines here at lunchtime are a testament to the food, and the staff at this location is always in a very good mood with excellent service. A large Cali Club and Chips will set you back around $7, but the best subs around for a work lunch escape. read more

This location (which is the same as the listing under N I H 35 & Hwy 290 E) is totally disgusting, and I hope the Health Department surprises them with an inspection soon. The guy who made my sandwich kept rubbing his nose and very obviously had a cold. At one point he covered his mouth to cough and continued to make my sandwich. I had to stop him and tell him I wanted someone else to make me a new sandwich. He obviously had no clue why I didn't want his grimy hands all over my food. Completely revolting. The person who remade my sandwich was apologetic and looked pretty guilty about the situation. I don't walk into any Thundercloud location thinking it's going to be the most sanitary place in the world (it's a hippie kind of place after all), but seriously? The manager of this store should be fired if employees are forced to come into work sick or if they aren't forced to go home if they come in hacking and sneezing all over peoples' food. read more

Right now this mama-to-be is craving tomatoes and where can I get a delicious tomatoey sauce?? Thundercloud! That's where. I get the meatball sub for this little craving and it fixes me right up. I am not too keen on cold cuts so I have never gotten the other options here, but I can definitely vouch for that meatball sub. Just wish the meatballs were a bit small so I didn't have to bite into a big hunk o' meat for one little bite. Also, have them slice up a pickle spear for you. Thundercloud is nothing special. It's Hit or Miss depending on the attitude of the person making your food. Smoothies used to be my go-to item. Turns out only one person made them properly and they left. The sandwiches are okay. The bread is nothing to write home about and the meats you can get at your own grocery store. I prefer sandwich shop that cooks their own meat. I don't need someone else to assemble pre cut meat for me, I can do that on my own. read more

You have no reasonable system in place for your staff to be successful so they are NOT. The space is not laid out well for taking orders. Your sandwich "artists " are also expected to be cashiers. And answer the phone. And pour drinks. Designate someone for that role!! Your chicken salad sandwich should be marketed as a MAYONNAISE sandwich... sooooo much Mayo and sooo little chicken. I have never been treated so rudely in a food establishment. I was running within 15-20 minutes of closing when I phoned in an order. I still arrived at least 10 min prior to closing to pick up and purchase my order. The location was filthy and disgusting. The staff well I can not say a good thing about it. As I was leaving the establishment turned to enter my vehicle the guy that was helping me took what appeared to be a tip jar (as I went to another establishment on another visit and realized) and threw it at the door. This location is very close to my work. At lunchtime it's always packed. The sandwich makers are a little slow. But when I go back to my desk and eat my wonderful sandwich it's sooo worth it. My sandwich is always tasty and fresh. My favorite was on special this week- the office. Egg salad & bacon. I stopped going to Subway because they tasted like cardboard. I'd rather support local businesses anyway. read more

Wow, have heard of Thunderclouds for several years and have to admit the modest building and less than attractive atmosphere have kept me away. Wow, how was I wrong in so many ways! I'm sorry for that, one of the best subs I've heard, and how needs all the flashy signs, photos, etc... They have all that matters, awesome staff, a very clean facility and good food that truly puts all the chain subway shops to shame! Fresh ingredients, the staff was outstanding and it was just a damn good sandwich that had a very unique taste... Not blab at all! The tuna sub rocks the house...the service is fast and love the fresh bread...Now the.decor needs.lots.of help...it does not have a stay & eat it here feel...so i always take to go. I have ordered the salads but they are not a very good size...i always have to ask for extra tomatoe and think they should add more lettuce. read more

I've been enjoying their April specials. Unfortunately, it seems that every time I tip when I pay, I go to eat my sandwich and find out they've gotten my order wrong. This has been my T-Cloud for about 15 years now. I go to others, but this one is closest to my casita. True. There are times when I don't go very often, but if I don't know what to eat and don't want to drive very far, this is my "go to" place. I've been a T-Cloud fan for about 20 years now. There are always interesting people working the counter. Some of them are really friendly. I even went out once with one of the guys that worked there (that was a long time ago). The sandwiches are consistently good. The sandwichistas (I just made that up) always ask if you want every ingredient they normally put on a sandwich, Mayonnaise, Mustard? Lettuce, tomatoes, onions? American or Provelone? Salt, pepper, Thundersauce? If you don't specify at the beginning of your order, they always ask, Small or Large, White or Wheat? They ask. They don't assume. I don't think there's a sandwich there over $5, unless it has avocado, (which is really pricey everywhere). My biggest beef with T-Cloud is that most of them serve Pepsi products, but I can get a DP or a Diet DP, so that's cool. I love this place and I hope to be going there for a long, long time. read more

They get pretty steady business during the lunch hour. Personally, I like the hummus or egg salad sandwiches, although they can (and do) get a little messy. Ok, actually Yelp, I hate this place. I didn't notice this before but NO ONE WEARS GLOVES, hairnets, anything. I had the same experience as reviewer Melanie D. A woman coughed (a wet cough, a productive, deep chest cough) all over my sandwich, and coughed so hard she left the room. She did appear to wash her hands but she was clearly sick with a URI and had already been glovelessly handling my sandwich. She apologized, laughing a little. I said, "you know what, I get colds very easily, and you aren't wearing gloves..." She cut me off and became instantly irate, half yelling, "I washed my hands! What do you want, I washed my hands!" She made a scene, tried to embarrass me. Little did she know I am much more immune to embarrassment than I am to headcolds. I held my own and walked out. As I shut the door, I heard her yell, "Whatever". Whatever indeed. I echo concerns about health code compliance, maybe they're due for a surprise visit. Also, another thing I didn't note before is that they seem to be a libertarian stronghold, with Ron Paul and 9/11 conspiracy bumper stickers everywhere. Gross. read more

Been here 5 times within the past year. Had a great experience first time... and been searching for that experience ever since. The sandwich guys are rude, don't smile, are hiding out in the back, with little to no lights on and can't follow simple instructions like light mayo. Two people both with an attitude, both looked like they shouldve been working at the smoke shop next door if you know what I mean. I have worked for thundercloud subs, on and off for about 10 years in my past..At all locations I worked as a closing manager..Now this isn't a difficult job, little more than locking the door, but I did work for one of the best managers in the company-(now deceased-RIP)-a legend really..So, I know the company well, at least well enough for this review to be taken Very seriously...Certain locations, were starting to disturb me, and I wondered if there was a shake up in upper management-then I popped in this location in a small shopping center just east of I-35 ..really it's entrance is off of koenig lane 2222 just east of the 290 exit if heading north on I-35..The place was packed and yet the lines ones moved at a quick pace, all the employees seemed calm and cheerfull.(As long as I have been in the FandB industry, I have never seen this consistency with a most likely minimum wage crew). The phone did not stop ringing while I was there, and when it was my turn to order and what not, the young man was calm and all smiles,he repeated my order back to me..I got it to go(which he asked)He said"no problem" when I asked that he slice pickles on on my sub, he remained courteous and cheerful, seemingly unaware of the huge line behind me.....The teamwork was impressive as one employee got my drink for me and rang me up, while the young man making my sub 'cleaned up his station and washed his hands'.Even though I got it to go, I asked to use the restroom and leave my food on the counter, they not only put is aside for me but in the mini fridge-so as not to spoil I guess???Anyways, the bathroom was spotless-which is how I judge most kitchens..When I saw the amount of people in the place I thought I was going to wait most of my lunch break time waiting and then ordering from an "seemingly over worked kid". Instead, I was out of there in no time, the experience was pleasant, the store was spotless, and the music was cool but not over the top...Bravo , to whoever is running that place, usually I can spot a manager right away(this is not always a good thing) and I was again pleasently surprised that I had no clue who the manager was. And even though it was that busy at least 2 voices 'yelled' out "thank you sir-have a nice day" .or something to that effect as I was hitting the door with my easily yet consistent sub..If this Thundercloud is close by to where you live and/or work, make sure to check it out...Location is in very small shopping center..Store name faces 290 acess road, just east of light, which if followed North can take you to both I-35North and/or 183(south or north)....If your coming from say downtown Austin, heading north. Exit 290 exit as if you were going to highland mall. Get in the right lane. You will pass mall very quickly, once you pass Clayton lane and a Texas Land And Cattle steak house(You will be able to see the main light by now), turn into the first entrance to the timy shopping center. Located in left corner of parking lot from their..If you miss this entrance, which is easy to do, simply turn right at the light, take the 1st entrance on the right. First and only business on your left.
