This is the kind of place I'm hoping to stumble upon when I'm visiting another city and looking for "sandwiches". The joint hasn't been updated since probably 1990, so you know they're putting their money in the right place: food over aesthetic. The front-facing counter piece dons posters for local arts/music/movie festivals, so you know these people are local royalty and champions of their community. A grand mural of (what I assume to be) Austin pre-settlement is plastered on the far wall, hand painted probably two decades ago. Grimy, cracked floor tiles in an unappealing shade of green sprawl across the floor, worn from scores of starving customers coming in to satisfy their hunger. The ceiling tiles don't match, the fluorescent lighting is hideous, and the booths haven't had their cushions replaced in decades-- yet they still welcome you in with a gentle embrace, as you sit down to unwrap a sandwich made by a friendly staff who cuts through the bullshit of fancy sandwich names and flashy neon signs. Thundercloud is doing it right. The tastiness of their sandwiches goes without saying-- when a place lacks aesthetic this much, you know you're getting something delicious. Easy, casual, affordable subs! I usually prefer toasted subs, but they didn't seem to have that option. I got the Austin Classic Signature Sub and it was delicious. The woman taking my order was SO kind, conversational, positive. She made the sub on the spot and gave great recommendations with add ins. I really enjoyed the wheat bread, very soft. I had such an authentic and wonderful experience. great conversation to start with Oscar and Sam. and they had just finished a big call in order. and immediately started helping me instead of taking a break. They were very real and the exact opposite of robotic which I always crave in the service industry. Gave me recommendations, and ended up getting a soup because Sam gave me a sample; and one of the best soups I've had! (Chicken tortilla btw) Sadly halfway through I went up to use the restroom and spilt the remaining bit, i asked for stuff to clean it up with because I hate being a bother. but they both rushed over and cleaned it all up without even giving me a chance to help. and without even asking Sam gave me even more soup than I had spilt to replace. I love this Thunderclouds! It's located off 290 and 35 so it's super convenient lunch option or quick dinner home. It has this 90's deli shop feel to it with its throwback music and wooden booths (that can occasionally be dirty but eh there's plenty of seating.) Their sandwiches alwaysss hit the spot. I get the California Club and add sprouts (except this time the man making my sandwich forgot the sprouts so I asked at the front counter and he gave me an overflowing cup of them (thanks man!)) I've been eating Thundercloud for close to 40 years. They always have fresh, quality ingredients and their staff is always doing a good job. I went in today and and had the same good experience I usually do except this time it was even better. When I was leaving the bag that held my sandwiches tore and one of the sandwiches ended face up on the floor. I was having a bad day and just figured this was part of it and I should just trudge on. I picked up my mess and asked the woman making the to go order to throw away the sandwich for me. She wondered why and I explained what happened. She offered to make a new one and I declined. It wasn't the shops fault I dropped my food. However, she insisted and I acquiesced. I was hungry after all. Anyway, she didn't need to do that but I greatly appreciated it. Another staple of Austin, Texas. They've branched into surrounding towns and a few cities with their 70s style sub sandwiches. They have sweet peppers that they put on the sandwiches which are great. They cold cuts are fresh and tasty. I've been eating here for 30+ years whenever I get to Austin. This place didn't disappoint. I did find the broken ice machine and not so clean tables a little upsetting. However, I'm sure this was a result of a busy lunch and 109 degree days which do take their toll on equipment. I first tried Thundercloud in 1980 on Riverside drive. Years later when my son was at UT, the Burnet Road location was our favorite but I've also eaten at the one near ACC Rio Grande and on Guadalupe St. I like the 290 location because it is near me. I usually love this location. I always get a large wheat veggie delite with cream cheese. There's a new girl (young Hispanic, not the one with the hat, usually wears leggings) that has messed up my sandwich both times. One time she forgot my onions and the other time (today) she put hummus on my sandwich and when she realized I said cream cheese she scraped it off instead of getting a new bread now my sandwich tastes horrible and when she chopped the cucumbers they were in chunks in my sandwich.. ugh i hope I get a new sandwich. Also she never gave me a bag for my sandwich and when I didn't tip her she gave me a glare. On top of that she almost put the wrong soda in my cup. The guy and girl that work at this particular store have been there a long time, and I've been coming here since '99. Thundercloud has always been a great go-to place for a quick and cheap sandwich, and their quality is very good. My faves include the NY Italian, California Club, The Office Favorite (egg salad and bacon), and the Pastrami - - although I got to try their Nada Chicken Parmesan during a specials week and I must say it was quite awesome! LOVE the Thunder sauce and their hot / spicy relish (that usually goes on the Italian). It's quick and good food, and they always have a weekly special going on, but the kudos for this review has to go to the guy (skinny w/ brown hair) and gal (red hair w/ tatoos) at this specific store - - they are quick, friendly, and efficient. Over the past several visits they have pumped out some awesome subs w/ over-the-top customer service - - that's 5 stars in my book - - it keeps me coming back! read more

I scarfed down the first half and saved the second half. While mushy the next day, it was still a quality tuna sandwich. My home TC is off of Riverside and during peak times they get sandwiches cranked out! Maybe they were just under staffed this day. I ordered a sandwich online for a pick-up time of 4:30 I arrive a little after that time there was a couple ordering their sandwiches and there was only one young lady working. So I got in line and waited my turn, the pickup time was based on me getting sandwich and making it to work! Well when it was my turn I told the young lady I placed a online order she turns to what I thought was to get my sandwich but no it was to get the order receipt! Basically making my sandwich right then so after waiting for the couple in front of me and waiting for her to make my sandwich I was LATE!!!!!! I can't believe it. A Thundercloud located in Austin that actually has employees that smile....and get this - make small talk with you. Every time I visit I actually WANT to tip them and not do it because I know this hipster in front of me will roll his eyes with emo dismay if I don't shell out a dollar. During busy lunches they actually have 4-5 people working the front. It's efficiency at its greatest. The long lines never phase me because I know they are busting ass to get you in and out. This particular Thundercloud operates as my personal little (semi-)healthful oasis amidst a sea of fast food establishments surrounding my work. I usually try to bring my lunch and thus come here probably not quite weekly, but often enough that the employees seem to recognize me. They are an unfailingly polite and efficient group, whipping up delicious sandwiches so fast that I think it usually ends up being quicker than the average drive-through jaunt, anyway (and less fumes, since my car isn't idling). I think people forget that this location is here, maybe, because it's so rare that I encounter any line (but then, I'm usually not there at the conventional lunch hour, so perhaps that's it). I typically get the small egg salad sandwich on wheat and add pickle but occasionally get a little crazy and order the Texas tuna (tuna salad, avocado, jalapenos and cheese- okay, so maybe this one isn't so healthy, but it sure is tasty) or the veggie sandwich with hummus instead. I still need to try the Nada chicken; that's next on the list. Salads and soups have proven reliably good as well, particularly the tomato garlic bisque, which is probably one of my favorite soups locally. Perfect for a casual and inexpensive yet filling lunch or dinner when you're in a rush, and worlds better (for you, and tasting) than most fast food, I'd venture to say. read more

I've never actually been dying to try out Thundercloud, but thanks to that Kroger-like jingle on the radio that's always in my head, my starving body at work today and the fact that it is about 30 seconds from my workplace, I finally gave in. I love subs to begin with, but somehow they managed to make average ingredients taste good. It might have gotten extra points because of the Miss Vickie's. Average ham, average cheese, average vegetables, but possibly sub-par bread in comparison to other sub shops where it's often toasted, buttered, chewier.. and less stale. It was a tiny bit buttered which tasted good toward the end, but maybe I'm too sheltered by the delicious bread at jimmy john's or the option to toast my sub at subways or quiznos. Bread is a big factor and Thundercloud just wasn't doing it for me.. I was a bit turned off at the fact that they don't use gloves when preparing your sandwich, but the girl making my sandwich looked like she had good hygiene, was super friendly, and drew my mustard on in the shape of a smiley face. If someone else had made it for me I'm not sure I'd be enjoying it as much, but I hear they are all super friendly. I appreciate Thundercloud's rep and loyal followers describing it as "Austiny" and "filled with tradition" and I'm sure I will return, but it didn't exactly blow me away. read more

If extremely average subs at moderately-high prices and frustratingly-long lines are your thing, come here. The subs are by no means bad, but they're just so basic and ordinary - subs I could very easily make myself, and I'm no chef - that I cannot figure out why so many people love this place. I enjoy the people that work here. All down to earth and genuine. As far as my Roast Beef and Avocado it was lovely. I made the mistake of the american cheese but apart from that. It's fast and friendly and healthy. So how can you lose. Did I mention Vicker's Chip are the BOMB. And I just saw a fellow Yelper mention egg Salad and Wheat. It is a great thing. So simple yet yummy. I have not had pickle on mine but will try anything at least once. I just came back to read my review and have to say this review is so lame I am adding some Ummff to it and you know what that Ummff is....the fact that these guys work hard day in day out to give us a piece of mind in the sense that we don't have to worry about mediocre fast food. I love their egg salad on wheat, and they are willing to slice up pickles for me and add them to the sandwich (I think that's something like $0.10 extra, which is well worth it, since it's a fresh dill pickle). Okay typically I'm a huge fan of this location, always well taken care of. My last two experiences have left a NASTY taste in my mouth per say..... Direct and to my point: I called in a to-go order, while I was running some errands. So when I arrived, thinking it would be easy out and go.... WRONG My order was never made, and was still sitting next to the phone. So as I patiently waited for them to locate my order, nobody seemed to notice this mistake.... I really enjoy watching people play around pretending they don't know WHERE or WHY my food was never made or my personal favorite, PUSHING THE BUCK.. Blaming someone else for their mistake... At least the nice guy from Mississippi took care of the mistake and handled it well Second time: Ordered a pick-up again Waited in the LINE, not thinking that waiting in a REGULAR LINE or PICK-UP made the difference... Well apparently it does! Got up to the counter, told the girl "I've got it easy one for you, pick-up".. Pointed back at the other line, REALLY you just can't hand me my salad. I like Thundercloud. The sandwiches are good, the service is quick, and the prices are fair ($7) . My only concern is that many of the employees are putting sandwiches together directly with their hands...no gloves.... I haven't gotten sick though, so I guess they do wash up enough! This is a great quick spot to pick up lunch if you're in the area. They put your lunch together fast and the employees seem to be pretty upbeat, friendly people. Bonus points, they have sprouts!!! My favorite combination is whole wheat with turkey, spicy mustard, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, tomato and sprouts. Probably one of the most expensive, lack luster and bitter sandwiches of my life. I came in based off of the reviews and I deeply regretted it the second I walked in the door. The actual establishment looks like they have given up on it. I could have saved half my money going to heb and buying what's in this sandwich because it is literally nothing special at all.
