I've been eating at various Austin Thundercloud locations since the 90s so this review is long overdue. Over the hundreds of subs I've eaten here I can count on a one-fingered hand how many times I've had a poorly made sub (that's 1). Over time I've perfected my special sub and I'd like to share that here: the Nada Chicken, sized small, on wheat, with everything including cheddar, jalepeños, spicy mustard, and bacon. Yes. Add bacon. This might just be the best sandwich at TCloud with the Texas Tuna, Office Favorite, and Austin Club close behind. If you want a sub shop that consistently makes very good subs at a reasonable price, TCloud is for you. read more

I always try to have a buy 1 sub get 1 free coupon when I go - they're always in coupon books they hand out on the drag among other places - so I can get 2 large subs for about $9 after a tip. I always get the california club on wheat - turkey, guacamole, bacon, cheese, and all the trimmings. The guacamole is always good, the bread always fresh, it's pretty consistent. They also have a good veggie sub. If you find yourself a coupon, definitely go, and if you don't, still go if you're not cheap like me. read more

My first time yeaaaaaah after keep passing by many many times by this place I always wanted to try some other sandwich after I see the commercial on Facebook about their chicken salad sandwich they got my application so I decide to have chicken salad sandwich for lunch on Friday on Guadalupe st is were I work almost every day as soon as I walk into the place I feel very welcomed by all the employees behind the bar they asked me what do I like to order and I see all the employees involve. In my needs That's amazing I place my order very easy since was my first time they offered to me all the condiments and I said yes I said yes to the special dressing that was good I proceed to the drink machine for me a coke and the price was reasonable. The sandwich was delicious I ordered a whole sandwich wheat that I enjoy great chicken salad guys you are the best on that. I love this T Cloud! The employees are hilarious, yet attentive. The manager is awesome. They have a picture of Creek on the wall! Those of you who have ever worked on Guadalupe probably know him. A solid sub sandwich is always delivered fast and energetically at this Thundercloud. There are many options and pricing is unbeatable. The place even has a weekly discounted featured sub. The ingredients are fresh, the people who work here are hit or miss (could easily catch them on an 'off' day or you could have the best server ever), the sandwiches are delicious, and it is quick to order and quick to receive! Nothing spectacular, but taste and quality for the price can't be beat. Also, it is an Austin chain with a quirky and nerdy advertising song...what more could you want for a fast-food sub shop in Austin? One of my favorite sub shops in Austin! It's very local, and you just can't beat the quality you get. My favorite subs include both the Italian and meatballs. I like to get my Italian sub with everything on it, sweet and spicy chilis, and extra thunder sauce. Also, the way they shred their lettuce here is something special. They sometimes run out of certain breads (white or wheat) by the evening, so make sure you come for lunch. They have different sub specials that change every so often, so be on the look out for those! read more

I've been a customer of Thundercloud since they opened the first store, and today I had the worst subs over all of that time. Truth is, they have steadily going down hill for quite a while, but today I quit. My order was two of their simplest offerings, the kind I think they do best - egg salad and avocado subs. They were skimpy on all of the ingredients, sloppily put together, and not a hint of the Thunder Sauce. The bread has never been good, more a hot dog bun than a sub baguette. It was a dismal offering, and please, don't blame the virus, but maybe because we weren't there watching it just didn't matter to whomever "made" the sandwiches. There are plenty of other options around, so go elsewhere, where they care about their product. read more

I didn't like Thundie the first time I ate there over 10 years ago, but after I gave it a few shots and got used to the slightly different taste, it's been my favorite sub place ever since. There's something about it that's highly addictive....and it's usually pretty cheap. And it's perfect to take to the park. But I still don't get why the "Office Favorite" is egg salad. Thundercloud is an Austin institution. They're been around since jesus...anyway, they've been around a long time. The other reviewer that commented about not wearing gloves, I don't worry about that. They have a system where one person handles the money, everyone else stays "clean" and handles the food. Works for me and I've never had an issue. Mostly I get the American Classic all the way. Thundercloud's pastrami is at worst a four-star review. It's the service at the Guadalupe location that earns the prestige of worst the chain has to offer in Austin, and why I recommend you find alternate places to consume if you're in North Campus. Upon returning to the ATX for the first time since moving away, this was a close option for me to meet a friend as I wanted the sandwich that no place I've tried since the move has been able to duplicate. What I forgot was that this particular location all but trains their sandwich artists to be minimalists. Once I specified my type of sandwich and bread, the bread-barista departed for the microwave and the next thing I knew she was wrapping the sub without having asked what else I would like on it. This is a repeat offense. If tomatoes were so scarce, why didn't you just charge extra and tell us? read more

I am a deli freak. When I moved to Austin, every time I asked where to go the answer was always Thundercloud Subs. If it wasnt for the last 2 subs Ive got there, I wouldve given them a 2 star rating. That wouldve been based solely on the food, not the service, which is always personable and excellent. The first couple of times I went, the sub was good but ok at best. The second sub I got was the meatball. One of the meatballs had been re-heated so many times that it was solid as a rock in the middle. If it was the first meatball in the sub, I wouldve asked for another one or asked for my money back. Since it was the last one and I was mostly full I just let it go. My brother recommended that I go back and get the New York Italian. It just happens to be on special this month, and with chips and a drink is less than $8. The first one I had was so good that I was back 2 days later to have another. I like mine with sweet peppers, Thunder sauce, mayo, pepper, brown spicy mustard and all the veggies. If it as good as it has been the last 2 times Ive gone, I will quickly upgrade TCS to 4 stars read more

It's not just that this place is local and has that independently-ran, small business charm... The food is right on par for what it provides itself as. To the person who said they would rather eat at Schlotzky's, that's like comparing a grilled chicken from wherever to a bucket of fried, spicy chicken.... Mmmmmmm fried spicy chicken... Schlotzky's is built on the grease and cheese they splatter all over each sandwich. That's why they are so delicious AND unhealthy. Thundercloud is the quintessential, stripped-down quick, submarine-style sandwich. They embrace fresh ingredients and quick production. The food may not be the BEST ever, but for the type of business they are, it's spot on. This place is cheap, (mostly) healthy, quick, accessible and best of all committed to bolstering Austin as a vibrant, unique community. Ever seen the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving? It's enormous! Thundercloud subs is a pure Austin establishment. The first time I came here was in 2004, and it's had hippy employees this whole time. The subs I've had are consistently good, but I also know to avoid things that might be a gamble. :) Check out Ozone bikes next door while you're there! read more

Thundercloud is pretty good, but not great. The sandwiches are really nothing to write home about. Most of the ingredients are completely forgettable, and they don't stock any sauces to add some flavor - just mustard and mayonnaise. I will say that I stuck with something pretty safe and got a turkey club, so maybe their specialty sandwiches are better. And they used real bacon and not some weird chewy packaged stuff, which I definitely appreciate. I'll give three to three and a half stars because the staff was very friendly and the bacon was fresh. I'll probably come back again and try something else off the menu. read more

Weird music, great subs. I ordered the Texas Tuna on wheat and was not disappointed! I'd been eating beef and chicken all week and was happy to see the big tuna on the menu =) While they can't toast your sub, they will zap it for you in the microwave. A great local chain that hasn't become bloated and evil by it's success. The Nada Chicken is probably the best vegetarian sandwich anywhere, and when you don't want to be that good, the meatball sub is great. A pretty Spartan chips selection, but they have baked ones, which is nice. The soda choices are also limited, with only lemonade if you don't want soda. But for a quick sandwich, it can't be beat. The tiny patio is neat too in good weather. My only complaint is that they keep it freezing in there year round, maybe for the comfort of the workers (good) or to turn tables faster (bad). But miles better than Subway and other national chains. read more

I came in and the kid behind the counter was like a deer in the headlights. He didn't tell me what came on my sandwich, so I ended up not getting things on my sandwich that I would have liked. I guess he just assumed for me? Fresh vegetables is the best thing about this place. But Wheatsville is right down the street and their sandwiches rock! They nickle and dime you for every extra, including pepper. WHAT? The Nada chicken was just a boca patty microwaved. Have you ever had a microwaved boca patty? Not tasty. I have to say, Thundercloud will always be one of my favorite places in Austin to grab a sandwich. It's not gourmet, it's just healthy comfort food that's always fresh. I can get a ham on wheat with the works and know that all the things I like are on it - and none of it is fried or spoiled. The atmosphere (loud music and hippies) may be a little jarring for some, but I have to hand it to them - every Thundercloud is pretty much the same. Consistency = good in my book. I've been eating here for 20 years (gasp!) and have always been a satisfied customer. It's one of those local businesses that still feels local, even though there are a ton of locations. read more

I don't know if it was the guys first day, but this was literally my worst experience ever at a thundercloud. you know when you have 1 specific taste in your head and that's all you want? The veggie delight was all I wanted today, yet that did not happen. The guy who made my sandwich looked so confused and asked a million questions when I said all I want is how it comes with hummus and add jalapeños. What I got was no hummus, no olives, hardly any onions, and no jalapeños with a thick spread of mayonnaise and mustard. Now I'm home having to eat this sad sandwich that is not pleasing whatsoever. I will never go back to this location again... sad because I live so close and would definitely go more often. I would give this location one star only but I know how it's supposed to come and I know the way it should actually come is awesome. read more

Meatball sub was pretty good. We were looking forward to trying the Austin Club but they were out of smoked chicken :( . It was fine with Turkey- just nothing special. Went to Thundercloud subs last night to see what it was about. Tons of choices off the menu and they all sounded amazing. I finally decided on getting the club with peppers and avocado added on. The thunder sauce was the the big hype, I wished that I had more on the sandwich, couldn't really taste it. It was filling but didn't leave me feeling extremely full which was great. Five stars? Really guys? Jeez, I was all set to give this place three stars but now I'm feeling guilted into giving them four. I agree with the sentiments about the employees. Each time I've gone they've been extremely friendly and have made my sandwich quickly and with care. That said, I'm never that impressed with the resulting sandwich. Seriously. I keep trying the California Club, waiting for it to blow my mind with a taste sensation and it just never happens. PLUS, guacamole is not the same as avocado, but I'll let it slide. The turkey just seems tasteless to me. It's a passable sandwich, although they are generous with the bacon which is always a plus. So in closing, not fantastic out of this world sandwiches, but I've gone back a couple of times which I guess is telling. Not bad, on par with Subway but with better employees and a better vibe. And it's Austin-friendly, as others have noted, so that must be worth something right? I'm giving it four stars because of the guilt, and until I try at least one of the sandwiches mentioned below. OK, OK. I didn't think much of this place based on one experience. I went back a few months ago on my lunch break and had a club sandwich. They guys working there were super nice and when i got back to work to devour my sandwich. It was delicious. You really could tell the difference. I've gotten completely burned out on other Sub places due to horrible service and a complete lack of caring about making your meal taste great.
