Everytime I get sweet tea through the drive through it's old and nasty. Tea has a certain life span of 4-5hrs before it needs to be changed out, instead of serving quality they are being lazy and letting people waste their hard earned money on trash. read more

It's always something with this location. Put in an order online and came to pick it up. As I walk up they put a sign on the door "drive thru only" with several people still inside. So I have to sit in a long drive thru for 15 minutes just to pick up an order I put in 30 minutes ago. Then the order was wrong. Not bothering sitting in that line again just because they messed up my order. Idk why they would not allow pickups even if they don't have a cashier for inside. I've only had thunderclouds once before and I will say i was disappointed with the bread! It was pretty hard but I think it might have been closer to end of day.. This place is great, I've been eating at Thundercloud since the 90s. The food here is pretty good about 90% of the time. They really need to offer non-pickled jalapenos for their sandwiches and salads A little ways back they had some issues with unfriendly uptight employees, definitely not the vibe you expect at a Thundercloud. Something good, they do have a drive-thru, wish they were opened until 10pm though. Ordered a meatball sub for lunch. Great meatballs, good cheese, what was left of the bread was nice, terrible sauce. The tomato sauce is like water. Add it onto untoasted white bread and the bread dissolves into paste. Maybe a liquid tomato sauce is a Texas thing? Every meatball sub I've had along the east coast has a thick sauce that could be eaten with a fork. Toasted bread would be a bonus but it was a busy day and getting sandwiches made fast is better than making them perfect. Will order a meatball sub without sauce on my next visit. read more

I live two blocks from the 5401 Burnet location and I'm a regular. The subs are messy (ask for napkins), but so delicious. My current favorite is the Greenbelt, with bacon, avocado, and jalapeños. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Last time I was in the drive-thru, I accidentally dropped the $20 bill I was handing the cashier. If you're looking for a inexpensive and simple meal, Thundercloud Subs checks those boxes. Came here over the weekend to pick up lunch to go. Ordered the Veggie Delite and Nada Chicken subs. I appreciate the options for vegetarians and vegans. Overall both sandwiches were perfectly fine - not spectacular, but not terrible either. The sprouts on the Veggie Delite definitely are a nice touch though. For the price, it's not a bad deal in terms of quality and portion size. The shop is small and on the older side, but don't let that stop you from coming in. Although there's about 5 tables inside so it seems like this location caters more to to-go orders. There's a small parking lot, but we didn't have trouble finding a spot. There's also a drive-thru which is interesting, but I haven't used it. read more

I was appointment-hopping on North Lamar and needed a bite to eat before a semi-long drive. I'm always hesitant to grab Thundercloud because of my strange Subway obsession (yes, I know). Burnet Road was nearby and has a handy drive-thru, so I decided I needed to give it another go. The service was quick, and the location is convenient for North-Central Austinites, but the sub was so-so. I tried the Veggie Delite this time and was turned off immediately by the avocado-cream cheese overload. Sprouts were everywhere - on the car seat, in the cream cheese, in my teeth. I wish I didn't feel so guilty about my mediocre feelings toward an Austin institution, but there it is, folks. I believe you when you say the meats, cheeses and produce are sliced daily. The wonderful people in this town are always lucky to have such great places like Thundecloud. The subs were great everything was freshly prepared and tasted delicious. The guy preparing my sub made sure I got what I wanted asking all the right questions. There is nothing great about the interior of the place but all you need is great food at a reasonable price and who cares about the rest. Very bad experience here at this location, the guy taking my order was not paying attention. I had to repeat twice I wanted the combos, I get to the window and had to tell him twice what type of chips I wanted. Once I paid and he gave me my food, I ask for my drinks and he says "oh you just got the sandwiches and chips" then I told him I wanted the combos but that I needed to leave as I was in a bit of a rush. This location was once average now it's time to retire this location perhaps Thundercloud Subs period. The last couple of times I've eaten here the sandwiches has been very underwhelming. I have lived in Austin for 40 years, everyone I know has worked at or managed a TC at some point. My son worked at TC all through high school under the reign of Toby(rip) and this is by far the WORST TC ever!!. Sloppy sandwiches with nearly no ingredients. Thundercloud has always been around since my infancy in Austin so it's hard for me to be unbiased. They are friendly and goofy but clean and organized. The food is fast, fresh, amazing and they cater to vegans, vegetarians and everyone in between. They have some amazingly good combinations on their menu for sandwich toppings as well as old favorites. I've visited the Burnet/Houston location a few times during Covid-19 and they have it down to a science. They hand you a sanitized pen to sign the receipt. The first visit to this Thundercloud was fantastic. I had my dog in the car so we went through the drive-thru and the girl at the window gave him bacon. Real bacon! He was beyond excited. I also got my sandwich fast and it was delicious. The second time my order was entirely messed up, it took a really long time for me to get my sandwich, and the staff member I dealt with was incredibly rude. When I said that I got the wrong sandwich, he acted as though I had personally offended him and it was incredibly inconvenient for him to go change the sandwich... Sorry I'm allergic to avocado, dude, but there was a reason I asked you not to put it on my sandwich. I live close to two thunderclouds. This one is the one I'll skip, no matter what. I don't want to say it's scary, it's not, it's just shady. It seems like, after 5 pm, when the manager leaves, the "Drive Thru Only" sign is whipped up super quick, so the kids inside can do...whatever it is they do inside. I mean, i know it sucks to work at some sandwich place, but closing down the inside because you either are too lazy to want to have to clean it before closing or you're tripping balls every day and don't want to see some kids with their faces melting off is not good. The staff is always rude, they never get your order right, and they just don't care. I'd rather spend a little more time to go a bit more north to the other TC location on Burnet, thanks. read more

I love thundercloud. Like, really really love thundercloud. I could probably eat their sandwiches every day of the week and NOT get sick of them :) This location is great! Yes, the interior could use some updating, but it's not like this is a 5-star restaurant or something - it's just a sandwich shop, people. I LOVE that this location has a drive-through too! It is perfect for days when you just cant quiiiiite seem to get out of your PJ's. OH, and if you have a canine companion in the car with you, they will also give you a doggy treat (bacon!!) I love that. So does my pup! I don't really know why everyone is so upset about the staff at this location... everyone that has made my sandwiches is always really nice. When you think about it, you could use essentially the exact same review for every single one of the 28 Thundercloud locations: "Their food is tasty and always hits the spot, and it's usually made just the way I want it, but every once in a while an employee is too high and messes up my order, but I'll still keep coming back because it's Thundercloud." My order of choice: chicken salad, with pickles and jalapeños. I don't know why they charge extra for pickles and jalapeños when tomatoes and onions are free, but hey, I'm not a vegetable economist. Otherwise, just like everywhere else, my order is made correctly 95% of the time, except for the inevitable times when there's a 420% chance of a mixup. I love this Thundercloud. The staff can be intimidating but they are big softies under all those beards and tattoos. The sandwiches are great and the service is always fast. I love that this one has a drive-thru. Yes, it's an older building so that might bother some who need their sandwich places pristine. I just care that my sandwich tastes good and there's nothing gross in it. I haven't had that problem here! It gets crazy busy during lunch. The kids from the high school like to hang out here.
