During our first trek into Zion NP, we saw the signs for "ho-made" pies and knew we wanted to give this place a whirl. After I searched the website and saw vegetarian options, I was stoked to come in. We swung by for trip number two. The wait wasn't bad and my Gardein Spicy Chicken sandwich was pretty good. I was surprised when the lady who took my order asked if I wanted lettuce and tomato since I thought they were standard. Pies we're ok. While visiting Zion NP and staying at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, we took the opportunity to visit the Thunder Cafe. I have to admit, I was intrigued by the Ho-made pies sign. What I really enjoyed was the hometown, let us take care of you and get fed greeting by our server. In our two visits, and yes our server recognized us as a "two time offender," we enjoyed a sandwich wrap and fries, a taco salad, some hot wings, a bowl of chili, a house salad and of course two slices (Thunderberrry and Chocolate Cream pie). He recommended the ribs and the strawberry rhubarb pie. 5/5 on the dinner and dessert! The ribs were perfectly charred and the barbecue was so tasty. We stop here as we were leaving Zion NP on our way to Bryce Canyon NP. This place has excellent appetizers, local cold craft beers, hot chili and good burgers. Oh and the pies!!! The coconut cream and the apple pie were to die for! We had a great time talking to the owner about his impressive car and plates collection. Will send him a PR plate for him to hang out on the wall. The pie was a welcome treat on our whirlwind tour of the national parks in Utah. The restaurant is large enough to accommodate travelers. The employees were kind. On our way to Zion National Park, we drove pass this restaurant. It's a family owned diner, with delicious food and great old school ambience! We were seated right away, and was greated by the bubbly host who knew everything about the menu, and gave us a brief history of the restaurant. We ordered pancakes and stuffed biscuit with gravy ( first time trying this) I took a bite of the biscuit from my friend's plate. It was tasty. I can't say that it was exceptional, because I have nothing to compare ot to. However, my pancakes were nice , fluffy and absolutely delicious! We'll be back the next time we're in Utah. read more

This place is one of the only restaurants open for miles when coming to or from Zion National Park. The restaurant also features a gift shop and golf shop, and the gift shop has some nice Native American jewelry. The food here on a scale of 0-10 is a 4. Not good and the cherry pie didn't taste very good either. If you're here from Zion for the day go back to Zion the restaurants there are top notch. Once you're here there aren't any other choices but this place. read more

Options are limited in the area, but the food is average and the prices are high. I get that the prices are a little high, it's a ways out of the way, so getting the food there costs some more, but it was $15 for 3 chicken tenders and a handful of fries. We stopped by on a Monday afternoon. There were only a few customers but we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. The hostess promptly brought water and said our server would be with us shortly. ~COVID-19 Review~ *Bumped up a star for location and the amazing service by our fabulous waiter! This is a diner, flashy light from the outside, attached to the Best Western inn located at the highway junction outside of the East entrance of Zion National Park. Plain and simple - there's not much to choose from in this general area. Coming from Bryce Canyon at the end of our day we were STARVING - so despite the mixed feedback on Yelp we decided to give this place a go considering its location and extensive menu. The short of it - we were glad we did! Walking in on a Sunday evening we were able to be seated at a table right away. Nice! Staff were wearing masks, though other patrons dining were not - to be expected at a restaurant. Just mentioning this as I'm not sure if this is where the other complaints come from. We did not feel uncomfortable or exposed to other's droplets during our meal. We were seated at a booth. I think perhaps one of the best things about this diner is their extensive menu. For me, it was so exciting that they have a vegetarian menu!! Not often that you see that at all, nevertheless in the middle of nowhere type of places. You can get the beer/wine menu on request as well. I do recommend - as they have some local offerings which are nice to take advantage of. We tried the blueberry and the apricot wheat which were both excellent and refreshing after our long day of hiking. As for food quality, essentially average diner fare. That said the coleslaw that I had was delightful. I'm not typically a fan, but whatever they use really distinguishes it from the average. Perhaps it was a bit of a horseradish tinge? It had a bright, kick in flavor to it which I loved. The portion sizes are very generous and we were happy to have some leftovers to munch on the next day. My partner loved his burger. As others have mentioned, they are known for their pies. So make sure to save room for dessert or take a slice to go! Definitely worth it. Our waiter was AMAZING. Great service, so kind, helpful. Just a really great dining experience with him. Unfortunately I cannot recall his name -- I want to say it was Lloyd? Food is mediocre at best. Prices are out of this world. $17-$23 for a hamburger and fries. $17 for 8 wings. Granted this is one of the only places around to get food, but for the price I'd hope that the food would be at least somewhat worth the cost. read more

We had two meals here - dinner and breakfast the next day. The service was amazing, especially since we had a group of 45 people. We broke it up into groups and they knew we were coming. Cod dinner was pretty good. The Trout Amandine was a little salty but the veggies and rice were perfectly done. The Cajun shrimp dinner was tasty and no issues. My boyfriend and I drove back to Zion, after our adventure in Bryce Canyon and decided to stop by Thunderbird for a bite to eat. If you love Mom & Pop establishments, you'll love and appreciate Thunderbird as much as my boyfriend and I did. I love the feeling when service isn't rushed, even though it is obviously busy and understaffed. I appreciate the staff's time, fantastic service and overall good vibes! Thank you. Now, as far as food ...come here for the pies! All the signage, advertising about Thunderbird having the best pies -they aren't falsely tooting their own horn about the pies. I'll attest to the hot apple pie to be one of thee best apple pies I've ever had. The strawberry rhubarb was good, but the apple was so delicious that I MADE room in my tummy to have it, even though I was stuffed from everything else I ate. Love the extensive vegetarian options (see the menu pic) and the continuous replay of the short movie of the history of the Thunderbird restaurant. We had roughly an hour wait for dinner, but that's to be expected so close to Zion. All of the food was amazing from our pastas to dessert. Our server, Lloyd, was also truly great. We watched him service 10 tables, some with demanding guests, all while maintaining an upbeat, friendly attitude. Once seated, all service was speedy and we had a great time. After seeing "Ho Made", I had to stop in for breakfast. I had no idea what to expect! It's not a stand alone restaurant, but rather inside a building that also has a souvenir shop. There was a sign by the entrance that said to please wait to be seated. So, we waited...and waited. We saw waitresses walk past several times without saying anything. A line started to form behind us and I thought maybe they were reaching the end of breakfast hours. After what seemed like 20 minutes of standing awkwardly by the door, a waitress finally took us to a booth. Everyone who tended to us was nice, but I must say, there was no hustling going on at all. Definitely not somewhere to go if you're in a hurry. Onto the good stuff. The menu is pretty standard - eggs, pancakes, skillets, etc. Nothing fancy, but sometimes simplicity is all you need. I got the two egg breakfast with my eggs over easy. It came with hash browns and toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly. My knife poked through the yolk smoothly and it ran beautifully. Delicious! Apparently this place is known for their pies, hence the ho-made. I ordered the strawberry rhubarb while my boyfriend ordered the thunderberry. My pie was good, but nothing mind boggling. Thunderberry is a mix of basically every berry, so it's hard to discern what flavor you're tasting. Nonetheless, they were yummy. The chicken fried steak was so-so. The turkey sandwich was bland and no flavor to the meat. The apple pie was great. The strawberry-rhubarb was ok but wouldn't order again. A fantastic stop after a long day of adventures in Zion! They had a wait on a Monday night, but we checked into our hotel up the street and then came back. Comfortable seating, and so much quieter than getting food in busy Springdale. We felt like we could recharge AND relax. Lloyd was a fantastic server- polite, fun, gave helpful (and delicious!) suggestions, and he really was hustling and giving attention to all his tables. Good, filling food. Our party got burgers and the bbq ribs. There is also a salad bar but we didn't try that. Highly recommend the sweet potatoes fries! So this is definitely a popular spot, especially on Sundays when everything else is pretty much closed. Expect a little bit of a wait. The food was really good and the actual restaurant itself is pretty cool. It reminds me of a classic American diner.
