The Mt Carmel Junction is the nexus of all traffic from Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon--it may as well be the intersection of terrible food, awful service and over-priced snacks. I would steer clear of the Thunderbird and have a Subway sandwich--you may want to hike Angel's Landing without exploding diarrhea. If you are looking for a pleasant local experience, go with McDonald's in Kanab--the burgers are actually good. And if you want a beer, grab a sixer at the gas station, waiting for Taylor will definitely leave you RED. And the "pie girl"? Hostess has nothing to worry about. Keep driving--Kanab is only 20 miles away and won't require a doctor's visit. What's the word? It ain't the Thunderbird. Second verse, worse than the first. read more

When in a pinch this will do, the food is along the lines of Denny's quality. I love the rustic cabin feel and decor of the place, staff was friendly. Its just very mediocre food with high prices and they can do this because there is no other options near by. Nice gift shop near by to spend your time browsing for souvenirs while you are waiting. read more

I have to admit that it's the sign that drew us in, and I am sure it's a perfect tourist trap, and I was happy that I took the bait. The food was well prepared and satisfying, and the service also gave a homey 50's vibe. I liked my chicken-fried steak, and my son savored his Philly sandwich. My wife was not impressed by the tuna melt. The decor was the most interesting thing, and they kept us entertained throughout our lunch. Here is the good (and not as good) aspects of Thunderbird. The not as good was the burgers - they were no better than average. The taco salad was good. Why 4 stars? The pies! The hot apple pie with buttered rum sauce was excellent, the strawberry rhubarb was great, and the thunderberry was also pretty good. We were on our way home from our weekend family getaway and wanted to grab a nice hearty breakfast before the drive home. Our tour guide had recommended Thunderbird so we decided to check them out. It's located along side a hotel and gift shop. I loved the small town, mom & pop feel and all of the license plate decorations. My hub and I shared the country fried steak and a biscuit and gravy. This was the perfect amount for us and not too heavy. I thought everything was great. I especially love a place with free coffee refills. There's just something that hits different with those big coffee pots and a simple mug. I do have to dock one star just because it did take quite a while to get our check but I understand our waitress had a lot of tables, she was still very friendly and polite. I would definitely come back again. I'm sure their dinner is great too. read more

After a long road trip, we stopped here to get some food and there wasn't much nearby. We were not impressed by the food and the portions were so small with higher prices. The service was wonderful and the people were friendly but we could tell that this was a place for regulars and we weren't them. First things first is how friendly the wait staff was. Our waiter was really personable and helpful with the menu. I got the Cajun shrimp dinner and it eas really good and flavorful. The loaded potato was great too. The veggies were fine. Just plain boiled veggies. Not pictured is the coconut cream (basically pudding) pie and the chocolate pie. We both ate them so quick. We got the apple pie and that wasn't my favorite. I'm really particular on my apple pies and theirs just wasn't doing it for me. Great service, hot and filling food! I tried a local beer--Wasatch Brewery Blueberry Hefeweizen--which was refreshing after our afternoon hiking in Zion. We started w the cowboy bites (think that's the right name), which are fried balls of pepper jack, corn, and bacon served with ranch. They were excellent, just enough heat to leave you reaching for the water! We also split a Cobb Salad and a bacon cheese burger, and were very happy with our meal. My bacon cheeseburger hit the spot and was cooked perfectly; comes w lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, as well as "fry sauce," which is mayo and ketchup mixed. Burger come w fries, sweet potato fries, or coleslaw; up-charge will get you the rings. Onion rings were good, but a little too greasy. Cobb salad was good, but considering the price of food it would have been nice if it featured lettuce or greens other than iceberg. Since they're known for their pie ("ho-made" -- read the story at the table!), but we were stuffed, we ordered a slice of Thunderberry pie to go. I have seen this place on YouTube while doing research for our trip. It is a nice stop in between Kanab and Bryce or Kanab and Zion National Park to stop for lunch or breakfast. The sign greeting you out front is iconic ; "Home of the Ho-Made Pies". The wait to be seated took longer than expected but that didn't bother us. The decor and staff were great, and they played a lot of retro/ oldies music. We had breakfast, French Toast and Denver Omelet. The French Toast was great; very thick bread with great flavor. The omelet was good but nothing to write home about. If you do stop here you will need try the pie. We had the Apple Pie and it was amazing!!!! The pie put this place at a 4 star rating. read more

Should've checked my to-go box before driving 20+ minutes back to our Airbnb. Didn't get my sweet potato fries... do not recommend this restaurant for those reasons. Both my husband and I wanted a baked potato with our meal however they didn't start serving baked potatoes until 6:30, we were there about 5:30. Their dinner hours are between 5-10. My husband ordered ribs and they were dried out with not much meat. The mashed potatoes were instant and the veggies were frozen, not fresh. I ordered the seared chicken breast, it was really good, but I had ordered sweet potato fries and they brought me mashed potatoes. Maggie picked out a nice B&B for our stay at Mt. Carmel as it was close to Zion National Park.  One of the cool things about small towns is you come across unique diners. Mt. Carmel has the Thunderbird Restaurant.  Very nicely decorated inside. Chicken noodle soup was hot and full of flavor from the tender chicken.  Noodles had a nice mild flavor.  Very good chicken noodle soup. Chicken wings with honey bbq sauce were full of sweet honey flavor.  I think they were fried as there seemed to be some crunchy batter under the sauce.  Very good tasting wings. Vanilla ice cream was from Sysco and I enjoyed the creamy vanilla flavor. 2nd visit I called and talked to Lloyd to see if I could order dinner before 4pm.  He said it would be ok and I headed over.  Noticed the dinner special was blackened trout and I gave it a try.  The Idaho caught trout was tender and flaky with delicious trout flavor blended with the cajun seasoning.  Loved the trout.  Sweet potato fries had a crispy outer layer and full of sweet potato flavor.   Our visits to the Thunderbird exceeded expectations and I look forward to our next trip to Zion and the Thunderbird.  If you visit ask to be served by Lloyd as he provided excellent service. read more

We hit this place coming back from Zion National Park. Very cool retro setting, 60s music playing softly in the back ground. Vintage license plates line the walls, along with old memorabilia. Waitress was super friendly and efficient. Hubs and I split the Larry, a grilled roast beef with thinly sliced ham and some sweet potato fries. The best part of the meal was the fudge brownie sundae! Did the signage grab my attention? Definitely. I saw it as I was making my drive to Bryce Canyon and giggled at the "Ho-made Pies" tagline as I made my turn onto my next stretch of road. On the way back to Springdale later that day I passed it again. Since I wasn't in a hurry to get back, I checked to see if they were still open and they were! I didn't want to stay for dinner but I did want to check it out and get a slice of that pie to go. I stepped in and was welcomed by a cozy looking diner-esque vibe with loads of seating. The menu was packed with loads of hearty comfort foods and the pie cooler right at the front had pre-packaged slices you could get to go. I picked up a slice of the chocolate cream and a kindly staff person checked me out quickly. They also had a small gift shop and I went in to check it out. As someone who collects stickers during my travels I would have LOVED to see a sticker of their sign. They had magnets but I can't put that on my water bottle! Later that night I dug into the pie in my hotel room. It was quite good. A thick chocolate pudding filling, a light crust (not super flaky) with a good layer of whipped cream on top. We were not impressed with the food. We both ordered a turkey dish and it was the same type of lunchmeat. It was not good quality turkey either. The kind you get at the grocery store is better than what they serve here. My wife smashed potatoes were pretty good, but the gravy was pretty salty. The vegetables were frozen and soft and not good. My turkey sandwich was supposed to have bacon on it, but I think I had one small piece so I couldn't even taste it. We decided to get the dessert, pie, because that is what they are famous for, and that did not disappoint. the pie was really good if you need to stop here I would say stop for the pie but skip the meal. There was also another item that saved this meal and that was the sweet potato fries. Those were probably some of the best I've ever had. read more

Whenever in the Mt Carmel area I always stop in to eat here. Never had a bad meal! Place is clean and service is always good. Great diner entrees we all know and love. And then there's the pie at the end. Place is well ran and an easy choice to make. Have had or seen most of their selections. Would highly recommend the Fish and chips. 3 large pieces of fish with large stack of fries. Burgers are 1/3 lbs patties on a Brioche bun. This is a great place for all ages. Kids will love the décor. If you're here and it's crowded it won't be long before you get a table. Especially if you group is 1-4. read more
