Don't buy electronics here. They will not give you a refund for the merchandise and they are selling mostly broken appliances for profit. We tried to return a vintage tape player less than 24hrs after purchasing it and we were not even allowed to trade for something else. We left them with their broken piece of junk and will not spend another dime here. You lost a customer because of your lousy return policy. Goodwill gives you 7 days to return electronics and also provides power strips to test the electronics out. I had to search underneath your shelves to find one working plug to test electronics with. Has a great, vast selection of clothing; everything is sorted into clear sections and very well-priced. I got three high quality sweaters, one with the tags still on it, for a total of $8 the other day. I've gotten some of my favorite wardrobe pieces from here. The staff is always friendly and they frequently have sales. Be sure to make note of which color tags are discounted the day you go! After my Mom called me at 9 in the morning today, I could no longer go back to sleep. This is when I decided to go to Thrift Town. BTW... do you know why my Mom called me so early? Well, she called to tell me to stop using my phone so much because she's worried I'm going to get "brain sicky." Thanks, Mom! After pulling on the wrong door and realizing that the doors open automatically, I came in to a crowd of people examining all the pieces while humming along to an Alanis Morissette song being played on the speakers. I knew this was going to be fun. I went straight to the book area since I was looking for cheap children's books. I found some goodies which I can use when I get my classroom. The 4 books that I found ranged from 49 cents to a dollar. Not bad. They had a good selection of children's books. I would come back here for this only. After looking around the store, I found a bunch of cool things but I knew that once I took it home, I would have no need for it. I did buy some nice bookends for my bf which were 50% off the original price. $2.50 for some bookends? Yay! I can't wait to come back here again. I was really supposed to be shopping for Halloween stuff, but when I walked in and saw all those racks and racks of clothes, well, how could I resist? I especially dug the racks of "better" items (I forget what they called it exactly, but it was essentially reserved for brand name and higher end stuff). I found a gorgeous silk blouse for only $6, which has already earned me several compliments, and which makes me feel chic and sophisticated (nevermind the fact that I shop at thrift stores)! All in all, I got outta there for less than $40, and with an assortment of tops and jeans to augment my wardrobe. I even found a scarf that worked great as a pirate sash, so I DID do some Halloween shopping after all! When I first walked in I couldn't take it all in and thought "eh, it's just a bunch of crap" OH HOW I WAS WRONG. Some simple highlights - Clothes: There are some crazy gems in here. I'm talking nice, new clothes that look great and are $2.50. I mean holy crap people. My wife got an amazing sweater that we easily would have spent $20 on but was $1.99 - Computer Software: This section is perfect for a crazy flashback to your youth. Carmen Sandiego cd-roms, AOL start up disks, Civilization I discs. It's amazing. I wanted to buy everything in there - Ladies shoes: Dudes shoes is a very small selection, but the ladies shoes is huge and organized by color and style. I always enjoy coming to ThriftTown, it is clean and overall a great place to find treasure. Friday (10/4) night I went with my children and was really disappointed on how they were treated. My oldest my keeping my youngest busy in the toy department and a young man with long curly hair scolded them because they moved an item he just put away. He literally looked at them with the ugliest look and agitation and told my daughter "ughh I just put that away" it made my daughter uncomfortable and all she could say was I am sorry ill put it back. My daughter then came to me and wanted to leave. This is unacceptable! I get it, the employee could have been ready to leave for the night, but to scold and treat my children this way is disrespectful to its customers. read more

Asking too much Goodwill and Salvation Army? I don't think so. This is one of the best thrift stores in Texas, in my opinion. It's not a speciality or vintage thrift store (though they do have a vintage women's selection), but it always has great finds, great prices and is the most organized mass thrift store I've ever been in. Every time I traveled to Austin, I made sure to schedule some time for a stop in this place, and now that I've moved to Austin I drop in weekly. Their selection is constantly updated. They have daily sales and consistent specials. The store features mens, women's and children's clothing & accessories as well as furniture and accents for the home. This place is great. Love the organization. By type and size. Everything is REALLY cheap here, cheaper than Goodwill. However, their selection isn't great. Found one shirt and two pairs of shorts and even these were questionable. Mostly old lady clothes... Goodwill gets a lot more donations so they tend to have a bigger selection. This store has some amazing finds! Today I found a complete build yourself 4 drawer dresser for $20! The floor staff was exceptional with answering my questions and assisting me getting the 100lb box to the front of the store and then out and into my car. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the cashier I had. Even the one next to her was stellar and tried to help me! Which mine simply brushed her off. She was rude, short, unkind, and lacked any sort of customer service initiative. Other than this place having that slight stink that all thrift stores have, I love it here. The first time I went, I thought it was pure nasty and vowed to never return. Once I put my snobbery aside and decided to change my life for the betterment of mankind, I went back. I'll tell you the main reason I love it above all other thrifties... They have dollar bags full of littlest pet shop toys for $1 that my daughter loves. She loses or gives away about 2 a day, which could be a normally expensive habit. Great prices and promotions on a Daily basis. I signed up for the VIP program and got 100 PTA right off the bat. For every 100 pts you get $5 off a $15 or more purchase. It's pretty well organized, but of course things get mixed up. They separate "Better clothing" from the rest. I think they only made this separation in the women's clothing. I am more of a garage-sale guy, but I occasioned into Thrift Town looking for some costume items. Interestingly, it shares the strip mall with a Goodwill store. Having visited both, I can say that Thrift Town has lower prices, better organization, and a friendlier staff. The goods seemed a notch better, as well. A friend noted that all the baby clothes were well-organized by size and sex, versus the aisles of "baby clothes" at Goodwill. Finding anything in that is hopelefs. I went here today, on a guided thrifting tour with my best friend, directly after going to Thrift Land. I was so excited to see they sort things by size. That really takes out a lot of the work. Also, they have dressing rooms. These luxuries mean the prices are slightly higher, but I didn't end up buying anything, so it didn't matter. They have a neat section that is called like, "better items," or something vague like that, that has name brands you recognize, like CK jeans or Old Navy dresses or something, and they're like $6, $7. Pretty neat. I almost scored a nice pair of pants but they were slightly too big. I also tried on a ridiculous dress that belled out at the hips so hugely, I can't imagine anyone fitting in it. It was burgundy and had a textured paisley pattern on it that looks like a decorative pillow my mom would have liked in the '80s. Then, centered under the sweetheart neckline, it had two patches sewn on- an orange cat and a rose. Basically, best dress ever. I tried it on for hilarity's sake, came out to show my friend, who said "I LOVE IT!" An old lady waiting for a dressing room informed me that it was too tight on me. That made it all the better. If you've read any of my other thrift-store reviews, you know that I visit our area thrift stores for cheap clothes for the shows I costume. So you can guess I'm on a budget and need a variety of types of clothing. Enter Thrift Town. I don't utilize Thrift Town as often as I probably should. I think the main reason for that is that some of their clothing is Goodwill-priced (like, the stuff I need), but a lot of their clothing seems to be on par price-wise as other smaller thrift stores in the area. I think Thrift Town has probably the largest actual plus size section I've seen in a thrift store- and it isn't all just shapeless garments. Smaller sizes are hard to come by, though. On the Mens' side, you can find just about anything from a nice pair of pants to the coveted sweatervests. However, the Mens' shoe section was extremely disappointing (the opposite was true on the womens' side). The staff inside are really nice, too- and not so much the kind that stalks you through the store (seasoned thrifters may know what I'm talking about). They leave you be and they keep the store extremely organized and clean. One thing I really do appreciate is how they organize clothing by item type, size, then color. For someone like me looking for something specific, it keeps me from having to spend a few hours looking for something I'm never going to find. So I'll probably be back more than I have been in the past. Besides, they have a frequent buyer card, which is definitely a perk. read more

While it is a little more limited in selection than some of the larger thrift stores, it makes up for it in the quirkiness of its items. The prices are pretty much the lowest in town, even for thrift stores. And I like how they separate "nicer" pieces out onto different racks. If you're looking for costume pieces, accessories, or something fun to spice up your wardrobe, head directly to Thrift Town. Thrift Town is my current pick for best of Austin thrifting. Here's the fine print: some places have nicer clothes/better selection than Thrift Town, but they also have much, much higher prices. Which leaves Thrift Town as my winner because it's a place I can actually afford to shop. Look for a mixed set of items here...vintage items are pretty limited--expect to do a lot of digging. They have some really nice quality newer suits and things though--good brands, in good shape. And it really is well organized, which makes it a lot easier to hunt the elusive 50s dress. All in all, pretty good as a regular spot, and much, much less expensive (and creepy) than the nearby Goodwill. read more

I am genuinely perplexed at all the 4-star and 5-star reviews for this place. I'd like to add that I'm a seasoned thrift/vintage shopper who therefore has no airs about 1) second-hand clothing, 2) the sometimes inevitable wear and flaws of second-hand clothing, or even 3) the musky feet smells that often accompany such a place (which this one most certainly has). So suffice to say I was not exactly expecting a Neiman Marcus. After reading several reviews from others who state that they will "drive across town" because it's just that fantastic, I decided to make the trip myself with a friend. Which was, indeed, across town since I live north of the Arboretum and Thrift Town is quite south. From the outside, I could tell it was large which was promising...indicating a large selection. But within seconds of stepping inside and doing a cursory look around the store, I was instantly disappointed. And confused. 4.5 stars out of 40+ reviews for a lower-end Goodwill. I say "lower" because Goodwill actually has better stuff. Which justifies in my mind the couple bucks more they charge on their merchandise. HOWEVER, Thrift Town is not even THAT much cheaper. Note that there are multiple "better clothes" racks...(indicating, what? More stylish? Designer? Beats me because they were still not cute) and the tops ranged from $7.99 - $14.99+...not exactly a steal for out-of-style-no-not-in-that-cool-retro-way kind of clothes. Organization of the selection. In my opinion, also not as amazing as many have indicated. What color coordination? And it's a limbo between categorizing by S, M, L, XL to numbers: 4, 6, 8, etc...for things like tops and dresses (pants would understandably go by the number system). Inconsistent. And there are barely any small articles of clothing, so extremely limited selection for petite customers. Also shoes were really worn-out looking. Looked briefly at the decor items while I was bored and waiting for my friend--also not superb. My friend saw a couple of vases she liked. Other than that, lots of junky stuff. Like racks of VHS movies, kids bikes, and electronics from the eighties. Needless to say, I left without purchasing anything. If you live in the neighborhood and enjoy Plato's Closet (which I don't), maybe this will be your thing. If you have to make more than even a 5 minute drive, don't even bother. read more

I recently moved and I am furnishing much of my house from this store...although I've never found anything in the clothing section... Dude this place gave me a rash on my left wrist. I usually go here and browse through things because I LOVE THIS PLACE. They have sales everyday which are unbeatable. But, this being the first time to try on many different clothing's is my LAST. I do not know what kind of rash I got but it is spreading upwards on my arm as it itches. You can find great coupons in the newspaper (Austin Statesman) for this store. I found on say if you buy $15 you get $5 off. Everyday one of their tagged items, either blue, red, green, are 50% off. Unfortunately, there were no extra small grey suits for me to purchase to pull of my last minute halloween costume idea (Pee Wee Herman). No worries, as I browsed the long aisles, ideas sprung forth and I was able to piece together two or three costumes to last the long holiday weekend. I'd say more great things about the world of thrift, but what is there left to say? The prices are fair and on par with most thrift stores. The selection changes with the breeze. I love that I can come here and find new clothes with tags on them. The clothes that are used are always clean. I've found several name brand clothing here for less than $10. On different days they have colored tag sales. So one day you might go in and purple tags are half off. Show selection is ok but I rarely buy second hand shoes anyway. I moved from Florida to Austin and I've been having a hard time finding "good" thrift stores here. You know... the kind where the employees do not mark everything with a name brand up so high that I could buy it brand new from the sale rack at the name brand's own store. Bizarre for WORN and USED clothing but okay. Upon some Googling, I decided to check out Thrift Town. Lucky me, I went on a 50% off clothing day. Unlucky me- I couldn't move in the place. I was tripping over completely out of control and screaming children left and right. Every single aisle had about 7-10 people on it with carts.... It was a pretty obnoxious experience to say the least. I kinda think the carts should be put away on these "sale" days as it was nearly impossible to look at anything. I did find some cute items- some items that I wouldn't have paid Thrift Town's full marked price for but was happy to pay 50%. Overall, it was a lackluster experience. I am in love with thrifting... so I guess I will keep searching for the thrift store of my dreams in Austin because this one wasn't it. :( read more
