They are always willing to lend a helping hand when we need it. The facility does offer free parking. Visitors must check in and check out at the front desk on every visit. I do want to mention that on occasions, the staff does take cruel treatment from some patients, so be kind, as they are there to take care of your loved ones.

Our loved one experienced a couple of health setbacks while at this facility. Each time, there…read moreseemed to be a delay in calling paramedics and getting them transferred to the hospital, which was concerning. What really made a difference were the CNAs. Victorine, Quincy, Annie, Ngozi and several others were consistently kind, attentive, and compassionate -- they're the ones who helped make a tough situation more bearable. We actually returned for a second stay mainly because we trusted the care provided by these CNAs. There were also a few nurses, especially those on the late-night shift, who clearly had our loved one's best interests at heart and provided excellent care. The doctor wasn't particularly warm or approachable, but when I raised concerns about medications (through the nurses), he usually responded and tried to address them. Unfortunately, therapy was the most disappointing part of the experience. I had to be very vocal to get my loved one the therapy they needed, and it felt like there was little initiative or follow-through from the therapy team. Basic equipment like gait belts seemed unfamiliar to them, and we were pushed toward using a Hoyer lift rather than working toward the mobility goals we had set. Another concern was cleanliness -- not once did I see anyone doing thorough cleaning. For a medical facility, that was troubling and made us uneasy about infection control.

Buyer beware. Artis of Wilmette is poorly managed and prioritizes profit over resident care. The only solution offered was to downgrade her room or pay $1,000 more per month for a room originally quoted at the same price, a clear bait-and-switch. I would never send a loved one to this program again. His disease progressed significantly. There was never enough staff, they lost medications, the room was often filthy, the food terrible. When visiting I would witness the saddest things - from people crawling down the halls or begging for help, to actual violence between residents. I'm so glad to have my dad out of this place. He is now much better now that he is out of Artis. If you visit, take note of how many families feel the need to hire private care in addition to memory care. Terrible!

There is a large gym with a decent sized comfortable swimming pool and a large number of physical therapy machines at different levels of skill supported by knowledgeable trainers. Free transportation is provided as far as 12 miles for medical/dental appointments and 8 miles for other trips. My main criticism is the absence of adequate tech assistance. Since there is one tech helper, it can take at least three days before you receive any assistance. While the techie is outstanding, he cannot serve roughly 200 residents. This is not the mid-20th century when most residents were not computer literate. I first thought that imposing a surcharge for access to a techie would work, but then a surcharge would need to be imposed on all activities that a minority of residents use.

Did I make the right call, could she live somewhere more affordable, would she outlive her money, etc. I don't even recall what search term led me to Senior Living Experts, but I'm grateful. Rebecca listened to my story and made me feel less alone. She thought where my mom was at was the best option in terms of cost, desired location and care needs addressed, but would do the research and circle back. We also discussed the care she received currently and provided a few suggestions. As promised, Rebecca followed up and confirmed her initial assessment. Yes, I'll still worry about her finances, but I now have a better understanding of the landscape and what comes should her care needs increase.
