    Chestnut Square at The Glen

My sister Sandra moved into Chestnut Square at The Glen in August of 2023. We had done quite a bit…read moreof research and looked at three or four other communities in the region that were nice, but we ultimately chose Chestnut for a variety of reasons. First and foremost were the staff and residents. They were all some of the warmest and friendliest people I've ever met. Not only were they warm and friendly but extremely helpful and very competent, as well as accommodating. The food was excellent, and the entire building was very clean, well-maintained, and quite attractive. There was plenty of programming and amenities both at Chestnut Square, as well as a short walk away in The Glen Town Center. Just across the street is a beautiful natural area with paved paths, a lake, shops, and plenty of places to explore. During her time at Chestnut Square, Sandra made many close friends and even developed a wonderful, close, and fulfilling romantic relationship with another resident who lived down the hall. The most important thing, however, was the dedication the staff had toward the happiness and fulfillment of all the residents. It really showed how happy everyone was in the community. Pretty amazing! When Sandra's health declined and she needed more assistance, Chestnut Square was able to provide additional on-site support through its phenomenal sister affiliate, Partners in Healthcare. The caregivers from Partners treated her and her loved ones like they were their own family. This was all available in Sandra's original apartment with a very thoughtful aging-in-place model, so she wouldn't need to transfer to another floor or facility. The care was exceptional, providing her with warmth, dignity, and respect. It comes as no surprise that Chestnut Square (a non-profit organization) is driven by their dedication to residents as well as staff--who all seem to really enjoy working there. Our entire experience with Chestnut Square was wonderful and provided the whole family with tremendous peace of mind!

I am so glad i chose to move her when i did. I have progressed to needing a walker and 12hrs a day private caregivers. Both are accommodated enthusiastically here. I know that this residential community has extended my life actively. The activity calendar offers something for mind, body, and spirit every day. Location is the best with shopping and medical care within a mile or two. The decor and residential suburban settings is superb. As is the residence itself. If you need it come join our club. They are always willing to lend a helping hand when we need it. The facility does offer free parking. Visitors must check in and check out at the front desk on every visit. I do want to mention that on occasions, the staff does take cruel treatment from some patients, so be kind, as they are there to take care of your loved ones.

Victorine, Quincy, Annie, Ngozi and several others were consistently kind, attentive, and compassionate -- they're the ones who helped make a tough situation more bearable. We actually returned for a second stay mainly because we trusted the care provided by these CNAs. There were also a few nurses, especially those on the late-night shift, who clearly had our loved one's best interests at heart and provided excellent care. The doctor wasn't particularly warm or approachable, but when I raised concerns about medications (through the nurses), he usually responded and tried to address them. Unfortunately, therapy was the most disappointing part of the experience. I had to be very vocal to get my loved one the therapy they needed, and it felt like there was little initiative or follow-through from the therapy team. Basic equipment like gait belts seemed unfamiliar to them, and we were pushed toward using a Hoyer lift rather than working toward the mobility goals we had set. Another concern was cleanliness -- not once did I see anyone doing thorough cleaning. For a medical facility, that was troubling and made us uneasy about infection control.

Most of the residents and staff are very friendly and interesting - we have enjoyable conversations and interactions every time we visit. My father enjoys the exercise classes, meetings, and meals in the dining room and with various groups. The food service is offered in a grill setting, carry out, and also a fine dining room which offers truly delicious meals. The facility is nicely sited within a neighborhood and seems the right size to our family - not too large and not too small. His apartment is spacious, comfortable and the right size for him. My father was initially against moving out of his home where he has lived well over have his life but is now so happy, busy, and engaged every day. He had to move into the nursing care for a few months for a severe wound to heal and has now successfully moved back into his independent living apartment.

The staff are caring, helpful, kind and generous with their time. The facilities are lovely - and I feel welcome every time I visit. They all go overboard to assist visitors and residents alike. Everyone seems genuinely comfortable and happy. The food offerings are abundant and deliciously prepared. There are options to dine in a casual 24-hour available cafe as well as a lovely dining room with excellent food. The staff is helpful and I've always them treat everyone with respect, kindness and and are willing to help with a smile and go the extra mile. There is every amenity possible, a broad array of "classes", beautiful choices in housing, swimming pool, gift shop, salon services, movie "theatre", game room, and so much more. The gorgeous art that covers the hallways are created by the residents who are working and living artists who are able to feature their work of aa monthly reception. I could go on and on but I'll leave it here. Go see for yourself..and it's a "forever home". As you need more services, they are available, so no need to move to another "home" to receive the medical services you require. It's a wonderful place.

Unfortunately, at least an our case, the administration failed to honor their multiple promises to *ALWAYS* keep our Mom's family members up-to-date on her progress. Despite multiple requests for details, they refused to give us any, and we found out that they had made the decision to both put our Mom into the Care Center *AND TO REFUSE TO ALLOW HER TO MOVE BACK IN TO HER APARTMENT* only *AFTER* they had done so. I can think of few things more unethical, immoral, indecent, and counter to every single positive aspect of the Vi than for the administration to unilaterally move a resident into the Care Center and prevent her from moving back into her apartment without informing her children at all, let alone after promising and assuring us multiple times that we would be notified right away if her status there was *EVER* at risk of changing. I initially planned to NOT recommend that anyone put their loved ones in a position where the administration of the facility could unilaterally move their loved ones into the Care Center and prevent them from moving back into their apartment without notice, but I realize that not everyone in a corrupt administration stays in their position forever; thus my context-specific recommendation of Maybe. My advice? If considering having your loved ones move into the Vi At The Glen, you should first insist that the administration sign a document stating their obligation to *ALWAYS* and *IMMEDIATELY* keep your loved one's family members apprised of any change in status and the reasons therefore so no one else has to suffer the way the administration made us suffer upon discovering their cowardly subterfuge regarding our Mom (and if they won't do so, then our firsthand experience suggests that you should *RUN* in the opposite direction). No one should have to ever be put through the emotional wringer we were put through by the unfathomable callousness of the current Vi administration, and to be clear, my 1-star review reflects only that aspect of our experience with the Vi At The Glen.

Although Vi's Assisted living was to isolate residents, in the long run, it kept most safe under extremely trying circumstances. I am thankful that my Mother was there and reasonably taken care of, with moderate dimentia, during that time. She is now 96 and still kicking!
