Playing scrabble in the activity room...before covid restrictions.
    Debbie M.

I am giving the Vi 5 stars for the Independent Living area. I have other ratings for other areas my parents lived in below. 2 stars overall. My folks moved in there 10 years ago. It was a lovely, spacious apartment. There are many things to do. My dad enjoyed the huge garden space each spring and summer and supplied the Vi residents with much produce. The CNA's were friendly and helpful. However, BEWARE if you begin to decline and need more help. Within 6 yrs, my dad's memory began to decline and my mom needed more assistance than the Independent side could provide. They moved across the street to the Assisted Living and there began our troubles. While most of the CNA's were caring and helpful, the head staff and especially the social worker were rude to us regularly. They are unable to accommodate dietary issues. We asked for dairy free and gluten free for our father's severe digestive issues and they said they couldn't do it. I'm not sure how people with diabetes or food allergies could live there. We hired daytime caregivers to help with our folks daily to watch the diet and help where the Vi could not. It was pure hell once Covid restrictions began. What started as a few weeks, became years. My mother cried daily wanting to die. My parents were not allowed out of their room...ever....for months. They couldn't even walk across the hall 6 ft to the activity room for a change. Once they were allowed to go outside in the summer, they still had to wear masks outside and sit 6 ft apart from each other. They couldn't even talk to each other because of masks and distance. Once family was allowed to see them again it still was with masks, etc. My mom gave up on life being so lonely and with my father in the throws of dementia. We were scolded by the staff for not wanting them vaccinated since our mother has had severe reactions to vaccines in the past. The social worker even introduced us to the doctor as the children who don't care about their parents. And we were standing right there. Once we were allowed back in their room it was apparent no deep cleaning had been done for months. No visitors, no cleaning. It was really dirty. Even a mouse trap was set up in the corner. My mom finally passed in May 2021. Dad moved to the Memory wing. The Memory wing is nicely furnished with a garden out back. We continued our private caregivers during the day so they could keep him occupied. Vi CNA's tend to just wheel patients out to the living area and leave them. CNA's were kind and helpful, just understaffed. It's the management and social worker who made our lives difficult. There are a few activities daily but not enough. Diet modifications are still a problem there. The people in charge are uncaring for memory patients. When our caregiver complained that my dad had not been attended to all night and was soaking wet, she asked social worker what would have happened if he had gotten out of bed and slipped? The answer, "That would be his fault, not ours." My 96 yr old dad had to sit away from others, wear a mask in the halls, and treated like a leper. Everyone there was double vaxxed and they were afraid of a 96 yr old that never left the building? If I could rate the Assisted Living building it would be 2 STARS. Memory Care ONE STAR. The Vi may look beautiful but can become a nightmare if you stay too long. The contract became too binding to break and move my parents in the end without losing a lot of money. The management was unkind to our family as we expected quality care and we weren't getting it. I'm sure they are relieved we are finally gone. Dad passed away 1-18-22. My advice to anyone looking at the VI....run! Too high end expensive for such ungrateful management.

First and foremost were the staff and residents. They were all some of the warmest and friendliest people I've ever met. Not only were they warm and friendly but extremely helpful and very competent, as well as accommodating. The food was excellent, and the entire building was very clean, well-maintained, and quite attractive. There was plenty of programming and amenities both at Chestnut Square, as well as a short walk away in The Glen Town Center. Just across the street is a beautiful natural area with paved paths, a lake, shops, and plenty of places to explore. During her time at Chestnut Square, Sandra made many close friends and even developed a wonderful, close, and fulfilling romantic relationship with another resident who lived down the hall. The most important thing, however, was the dedication the staff had toward the happiness and fulfillment of all the residents. It really showed how happy everyone was in the community. Pretty amazing! When Sandra's health declined and she needed more assistance, Chestnut Square was able to provide additional on-site support through its phenomenal sister affiliate, Partners in Healthcare. The caregivers from Partners treated her and her loved ones like they were their own family. This was all available in Sandra's original apartment with a very thoughtful aging-in-place model, so she wouldn't need to transfer to another floor or facility. The care was exceptional, providing her with warmth, dignity, and respect. It comes as no surprise that Chestnut Square (a non-profit organization) is driven by their dedication to residents as well as staff--who all seem to really enjoy working there. Our entire experience with Chestnut Square was wonderful and provided the whole family with tremendous peace of mind!

It was completely refurbished with deep cleaning, flooring, and painting throughout making it feel brand new. There have been many changes to The Lodge over the years. Three additional phases have been completed adding over 100 units. The assisted living area Encore was replaced with several new independent living apartments on the northside. Phases 1-3 were updated in all the common areas with artwork, carpeting, furniture, lighting, and painting to make everything look bright and fresh. Phase 4 will get the same treatment in a few years. The plan is to rejuvenate common areas every 10 years. Cherie Getlin became the Executive Director in March, 2024. Her vast experience and dedication, she began her career in senior living while still in high school, has made a tremendous positive impact on the community. Linda Yost is an excellent Marketing Director who is very helpful with your transition to a new life. The management company has changed to Life Care Services, a leader in the senior industry. The overall atmosphere at The Lodge makes living here a pleasant experience. The staff is very friendly. A welcome bonus is that the cost is quite reasonable compared to many other communities in the North Shore area. Cable, utilities, and wi-fi are included in the monthly fee. The dining rooms are convenient without a mandatory meal plan. I like cooking in my apartment every once in a while. There is even a senior refund on property taxes distributed to residents at the end of the year. So, check out The Lodge of Northbrook. You'll be glad you did.

Sadly, the pandemic hit during her first year at the community, with declining health following shortly thereafter. During her stay at the Lodge, many of the building's kindest and most dedicated employees left their positions. The 2220 building is in need of some updates. For families selecting a retirement community, it's important to keeping mind that a loved one's health may decline at any time. The Lodge does not offer weekend meal service, and very few of the residents eat lunch and dinner in the dining room during the week. The small assisted living wing at The Lodge was not certified for Medicare rehab during Mom's lifetime. The management and sales staff was difficult to communicate with when we went to list my mother's unit shortly after her death. We were charged over $3,000.00 for painting and decorating fees for a 2-bedroom unit that was in pristine condition! Since Mom died during the pandemic and had a private, graveside funeral, I contacted David Randle, the property's director, about holding a celebration of life at the building in the spring or summer. He promised to have the Executive Chef get in touch with me -- that never happened. There are many beautiful choices for seniors seeking retirement communities along the North Shore -- please look elsewhere. Caveat emptor -- let the buyer beware!

In spite of a madcap rush of 40+ new residents caused by the abrupt closing of another "senior" facility up the road, management rose to the occasion over a 4-5 month period to get everyone housed and safely moved in. Toss in another round of Covid, the Flu and artic winter temps, the Holiday decorations were once again Rockefeller Center like. Residents long-term and new have blended together on a mostly joyful. and very friendly fashion. Management continues their top down approach to keep things running smoothly Access to top rated reliable medical care is always a growing need as we all get older. And when buying a house any good realtor will say.... LOCATION - LOCATION - LOCATION!!! This facility has it in spades as well as a an IN-HOUSE reliable bus service to get you to and fro. I invite you to read my previous more extensive reviews, or better yet call BDP and schedule a visit. A long term and well informed marketing team await your call. Again, I am in NO way associated with Brookdale and simply reside here as an 85 yr old slightly disabled male resident. 2 years now and still very happy!!! HOPE to see YOU soon!!!
