Caring.com put Harbor House in touch with me and from the moment I spoke with Savannah, the executive director, I knew this place was special. Savannah actually did the assessment at the big, fancy, expensive nursing home and confirmed what I already suspected. We moved her out of there and Savannah actually drove out there and helped me move her stuff and my mom (I was visiting mom out of town). Over the next few days, I got a very up-close look at Harbor House and how the staff interacts with their residents. I popped in at unexpected times and walked through the adjacent buildings. I never saw a deviation from the excellence of care I saw the first time - not even once. I never saw residents mistreated or spoken to condescendingly, like I did at the other place. The caregivers are amazing women. Sam, Becky, Brittany, are really hands on nurses. Sam spent tons of time with me, discussing my mother's medications. The doctors call you and I spoke with Dr. Ernst about my mom for an hour! I couldn't even get the doctor at the big, fancy place to return my call! The place is small and it's warm and cozy - like a previous commenter said, it's not like an institution at all. It's like a home. My mom has an adorable sunny, private room with her own bathroom. She's always got someone there to help her. All I can say about this place except is that it's exceptional. I have learned that big, fancy nursing homes are usually understaffed and can't manage the needs of their patients. This place CARES for their patients. I don't need crystal chandeliers and big lobbies. I need individualized care with people who treat the elderly like the human beings they are. Harbor House does this. The owner of this facility needs to be very proud of his staff and his philosophies. I hope they never change. Amazing place.

The management is like a segment off of mean girls. They only care about gossip and dictating things that are unnecessary like bringing out the water before the silverware, not the resident sitting in their own filthy mess this place claims to have free will for their residence, but that's far from the truth. They can't choose to lay down if they want to if they're hurting a nurse will literally come and look at them and say they're fine. They can't even hang art on their walls or hallway walls because, the executive director doesn't like how it looks if that's their home and they pay BIG MONEY THEN WHATS THE issue It's really more about what she wants .the only time the place is clean properly is when its about to be a tour for a potential residence to move in or when the big bosses are coming . but on any given day if there's not a tour or if no one important is coming, the place smells like pee and poop and everything in between maintenance People are more concerned about what others are doing then fixing things around the community They are part of gossip and drama as well everyone here is walking on eggshells the executive Director may be good for business BUT She's not good for creating a happy enjoyable environment, where people can actually enjoy their job and work properly I mean when you're hearing what you do wrong every second who can .She creates a dictatorship of things that she likes and she wants without considering the enjoyment of the residence.I'm really surprised she's in that position because nothing about her is welcoming towards her employees or the residence I've seen girls cry due to poor treatment I've heard all kinds of things working here about nurses allegedly overmedicating residence and them tripping falling i've seen things with my own eyes that she should be more concerned about, but claims to be worried about safety, but there's people walking around blind with no assistance and no glasses. There's people walking around with no shoes on there's people leaning falling out their chairs there's people sitting in their feces. There's people with snot dripping out of their nose for hours and no assistance if you call the maintenance person for a spill, it takes an hour then they come with an attitude and she's aware of it. she's only worried about the drama

Everyone is pleasant and really cares about the patients. My friend feels very safe and loved by the people here. It's a rough job with everyone in different stages of dementia but they have so much patience and love for all of the people here. Any time we've had questions or concerns they have been very attentive and immediately tried to make things right. Upon arrival, we got the fancy sales pitch from their leadership team, leading us believe our father was in safe and caring hands. But each visit began to reveal a profound lack of care and a marked decline in his health. We received apologies and assurances from management (right up to the top) that his care would improve, but it never did. Within a few days of leaving Elevate and receiving proper care, he started to make a remarkable recovery - underscoring that Elevate was a toxic environment. Do your research. Google their rating on Medicare.gov. Google the complaints filed with the Illinois Department of Public Health. It's sobering to say the least. Please take this advice to heart and don't make the same mistake with your loved one.
