first of all, this is no longer Brookdale, it was bought out in September of 2025 by Discovery Village. We shall see if they continue with some of the positives. Brookdale Des Plaines, IL 3-16-25 After almost 2 years of residency my opinion Brookdale Des Plaines remains the same...... VERY high marks for both residents and management with staff. In spite of a madcap rush of 40+ new residents caused by the abrupt closing of another "senior" facility up the road, management rose to the occasion over a 4-5 month period to get everyone housed and safely moved in. Toss in another round of Covid, the Flu and artic winter temps, the Holiday decorations were once again Rockefeller Center like. Residents long-term and new have blended together on a mostly joyful. and very friendly fashion. Management continues their top down approach to keep things running smoothly Access to top rated reliable medical care is always a growing need as we all get older. And when buying a house any good realtor will say.... LOCATION - LOCATION - LOCATION!!! This facility has it in spades as well as a an IN-HOUSE reliable bus service to get you to and fro. BDP SHOULD BE at the VERY TOP of anyone's list as a safe, extremely well managed plus welcoming home for you or your loved one. I decided to read new reviews of Brookdale. My mom was there and I wrote a review complaining about bedbugs and the fact that they kept two months rent after my mom moved out. I would like to add that the lock was removed and her storage area had been ransacked. After thinking about it all these years later, there's more. All of her jewelry, of any value , was gone. She came out of the shower, and an unknown man was in her apartment. One night she came back from dinner and her money ,that was on her bed , was gone. My father tripped over a wheel chair in the dining room and had to get stitches. My mother tripped over the step going to her balcony and laid outside until a visitor heard her. She got stitches, too. The doctor saw the sores on her legs and arms....that's how we found out about the bedbugs....the doctor told us what it was! My mother is gone now, but when I think about Brookdale, I still get mad. Moving isn't easy on older people, but there's no way i would let her stay there. read more

I looked at many retirement communities when my parents' house became too much for them to handle and I am so glad we decided on Brookdale Des Plaines. They have lived here for 3 years now, and we could not be happier. Their apartment is beautiful and airy. The activities and exercise classes are challenging, engaging and fun. But most of all, we cannot rave enough about the wonderful staff. They are always so friendly, attentive, and caring. They treat everyone with respect, compassion, and levity. You can tell when people love what they do, and it shows here. I would recommend Brookdale Des Plaines to anyone who is looking for a warm and inviting place for their loved ones. read more

What a difficult time to choose and move into a Senior Living Facility. Covid 19 did not make the process easy. Brookdale in Des Plaines Il sure did. From the initial phone contacts, though the get togethers, visits, and finalizing contracts it was a smooth process. It didn't just stop there. There were many professionals at Brookdale that were available almost 24/7 to answer questions, help in planning the move in and all the other details that need to be done. Attention to resident needs, attention to details, great listening skills, following through, and professionalism were just a few of the qualities that has made Brookdale at Des Plaines a great place for my wife. read more

We moved my Dad into Brookdale Senior Assisted living over a year ago. I had my Dad living with us for many years and were reluctant to have him leave our home. Since we had negative pressure from my Sibling putting presure on us for selfish reasons(mostly economic and because they are duplicitous). We had no choice and had to find a place that would be very close to home and was more comfortable than the status quo Senior Care facility. We have been very happy with the specific location in Desplaines. They have been responsive to his needs and accommodating up to now. He was very apprehensive in participating in social activities, but has taken to participating in daily events.The staff is always helpful and have a smile! read more

Hello: I am a daughter of a resident at Brookdale in DesPlaines IL. My mother has been there for 6 years. I thought it was important for me to let people know who are looking for a place for there loved one, my experience at Brookdale. Even before she moved in the staff did everything they could to find an apartment that would be perfect for her. They have always been very accommodating and helpful no matter what. Covid has been very hard for everyone but the staff that bring her food is very sweet and very helpful she enjoys the food and loves the friends she has made there. They always have had several activities to keep the residents active and happy. All in all I feel that she is in the right place and we are very content with our decision. read more

From the Northeast corner of my 3rd floor Studio apartment here at Brookdale Des Plaines I see all the action at the busy intersection of River Road and Northwest Highway with Metra tracks running alongside between McHenry and Chicago and can even sit on the balcony during warm weather. I moved here, after my wife died several years ago, for location near our daughter, son-in-law and grand-dogs about fifteen minutes north in Wheeling; to be near O'Hare airport, four hours from our son and family in Silicon Valley; and a couple of minutes from the Tristate Tollway and my friends an hour or so south. At our initial visit our daughter quickly connected me with Lorraine who directed the chorus of a couple dozen eighty year olds because I too like to sing. This was in the good sized Living Room where many residents gather for bingo, exercise, and programs by entertainers and groups. Around the corner was a comfortable and well-stocked Library. We are also connected with the Des Plaines Library just down the street. Our Prairie Room comes next where fewer participants gather for movies, and video presentations. Then we have the Club Room with computers for resident use and tables for games puzzles. We also have an indoor pool with some water exercising and a hot tub which I enjoy. Back down the hall we pass the Dining Hall where Breakfast and Dinner are served. Our Resident Council sees to it that the quality remains varied and top notch. Around the corner is our Activity Room where residents can be artistically creative; also with a TV which can be watched by several persons at a time. Did I mention the garage?! Most important to me are personnel responsible for Dining Services, Resident Programs, Assisted Living and Health & Wellness, Clinical Coordinator, Therapy Coordinator, Personalized Living Manager, Housekeeping, and Engineering (to keep us climate comfortable at all times ... usually). All accountable to our sensitive and empathic Executive Director. During these COVID-19 times all have been active with "an abundance of caution" to keep us healthy mentally as well as physically. Still, there is the bottom line and I found the Directors of Sales and Marketing, Financial Services, and Resident Services helpful in making this affordable to me. While it is not cheap I have found it cost effective on my limited budget. read more

Brookdale of Des Plaines is a senior living community. I enjoy the conversations with our residents, variety of activities, and convenience of location to downtown Des Plaines. If you like quiet times enjoy our library, outside patio with tables and seating among flowers and vegetable gardens. Also we have a tree lined park like setting where you can sit enjoy the shade and watch the world go by. If activity is what you want, we have table games, card games, seated volley ball and many more activities and clubs. For physical activities, a pool and exercise room are available. Evenings can include live entertainment and movies from golden oldies to new releases. With new friends, enjoy good conversations in the lobby or parlor. My mother moved in about six years ago into the Independent living side. She's made friends and the convenience of not having to cook or shop for food has liberated her. The Covid experience has been difficult for everyone, but the largest impact is that the food has become almost inedible. My sister prepares entire meals for her freezer and I purchased frozen meals because I'm not much of a cook. For what my mother pays, the food should at least be decent. I know the residents have already expressed their dissatisfaction to management but according to my mother, nothing has changed. read more

I was referred to Brookdale Des Plaines for my brother needing assisted living. He did have a difficult period of adjustment, but then realized what a fabulous place was chosen for him. Every time I speak with him he raves about Brookdale. He acknowledges that he was in a "bad place of mind" when he entered, but now "loves" it and is happy. They do a great job and bend over backward to accommodate all likes/dislikes. read more

My folks have lived at Brookdale Des Plaines since 2012. They love it. My mother shares how much she loves living there to whoever she speaks too. With the COVID restrictions, my family has considered different arrangements so that we could see our parents, but my mother does not want to leave. Over the years, Brookdale has been very accommodating to our requests and concerns. Before COVID, we had most of our family holiday celebrations at Brookdale including working with the Dining Room manager to create a special holiday menu for our family. My family would come for different meals to spend some time with my parents so weekly breakfasts were a common occurrence. Over the last couple of years, we have switched to the in-house doctors for our convenience but previously my parents had kept all their regular doctors. Pre-COVID, one of my mother's favorite things is to get her hair done at the hair salon which is conveniently located on the first floor of the building. In some ways though they have spoiled my parents, because of COVID, they bring up the newspaper, mail, and meals. They bring around snacks from time to time, and my mother loves it! read more

From the moment I walked into Brookdale with my father . I knew it was the place for him . It was like walking into a five star hotel lobby . It was all there on the first floor(dining room/big lobby with seating/ off on another wing was a small restaurant for snacks/a hair salon / small room for private dining with family if needed/ off to another wing was area for get together functions) The place was spotless. Now for the services that are offered to my father was priceless. If he needed anything Brookdale was there to help him . If he fell Brookdale was there to assist him and any further actions needed as his days came to a end . Brookdale is a true senior living place for anyone thinking of putting there parent or parents into . It has everything your parents will need and more . read more

Moved my mother in law there 3 years ago was the best made we made. Very very clean great staff good food and the staff care for their residents. When you figure out cost vs all services and utilities that are included it's a good deal. Highly recommend this location. My dad moved in about 2 1/2 years ago. While he was not in the best of shape, he was well enough to move into assisted living. They operate on an ala carte system. You pay a base amount and they add as your loved one needs more care. Well, be prepared to be hit with astronomical fees as your loved one ages. First, the day he moved in, they told me that they had to handle his meds. I said I would do it myself to save my dad $500 a month. They said I couldn't do it. Who at that age isn't on medicine or uses over the counter? So right off the bat, that added to his monthly bill. Very unethical to not include that in the base amount or not to tell people before they move in. As time went on, they added more and more charges. The final straw was when they told me my father needed a 2 person lift. If he needed a 2 person lift, they should have recommended he leave as he should have been in a nursing home, if that was the case. I get the first bill and it's an additional $1300 a month for a 2 person lift! At that rate, with all the other charges that were added over the 2 years, my dad was going to run out of money VERY quickly. When I visited him, I only saw one employee lifting him and complained several times to the executive director. It took several months and an email with someone from corporate on it to get her to agree to give my dad a one month credit for the 2 person lift since each time I visited, only one person was working with him. They gave him therapy over the months to try and improve his ability to lift him but, SURPRISE, it didn't work. I looked around at several other facilities and they all charged a flat fee, none of this ala carte which makes it very difficult to plan for your loved ones future since you never know what fees you will be hit with next. Moved my dad into a WONDERFUL facility and in just 2 weeks of therapy, he was able to go into their assisted living (they have nursing care, which s more expensive but clearly, they want what's best for their residents). One flat fee for all his needs, he loves it and has already made new friends. Unless you have a money tree in your backyard, don't go to Brookdale Des Plaines. They only care about the money you pay them, not about what is best for their residents. read more
