We really looked forward to trying Three Cats with out-of-town company. The circus-themed space was very cool and kind of reminiscent of a grand, creative October costumed celebration downtown Detroit. Needless to say, the attention given to decor raised my experience expectations. Unfortunately, the waitstaff were inexperienced in customer service excellence. We walked in; only one person looked up out of two at the bar and one at the dining room. No one smiled. I felt unsure we'd arrived during regular business hours. We waited to be seated which was fine. Evidently the hostess was in training. The server offered water, but no effort to refill the empty glasses throughout the meal, despite frequent returns to our table to bring out drinks and the orders. We each received soup selections, but no bread service or even an oyster cracker accompaniment. We had to ask. The menu makes quite a big deal about its cocktail, beer and wine selections, however our server's knowledge of what was actually on hand was as poor as his knowledge of food-beverage pairing. My companion asked for three different menu beverages before one was found on the premises. Expect to pay $12-$15 for wine by the glass; that is, if its available. Cocktails may be a bit more, and mock-tails are available, however even some of those menu selections were not available because ingredients were not in the house. Bummer, the hot soups were served lukewarm. That said, one of our party did enjoy the tomato soup. The shrimp burger was claimed to be spicy but good by those who ordered it. My Mushroom salad with chicken was really oily and flavorless. The grilled breast was barely warm and very dry. All in all, i cannot recommend this restaurant to family and friends. I used to love this place for offering a few good vegan options. But things have changed. First, the website says the tomato soup is vegan but it's NOT just FYI. The server said the website just "hasn't been updated". There is also a vegan egg tostada but it's only offered for brunch on weekends. So the only option during the week is a mushroom salad (with many omissions), and maybe a soup of the day, if they happen to have a vegan one. Unfortunately I won't be going here anymore due to the lack of vegan options, which is really unfortunate cause it's such a cool place that my friends and I really enjoyed. Bummer. read more

I was craving a turkey sandwich, based on yelp pics, but was disappointed since the lunch menu is different daily. They only had the turkey hoagie today. My husband is getting the Michigan raised turkey hoagie for sharing, all in rebellion to my disappointment in today's menu. Our waitress, Sally was to the point, not super warm but clear in her communication to us always. We were seated at a low 4-top by the entrance and not far from the registers. There's a mix of products for sale throughout the restaurant. It's very similar to Leon and Lulu next-door. We started off with the mushroom bisque and a Cass community arugula salad and the culinary institute hearts of Romain Caesar salad, less anchovies and the challah croutons. I ended up ordering the ultimate chicken sandwich on their homemade challah bread with due difference to Popeye and chick. Table setting includes silverware, mixed sets. Feels like an afternoon tea party today. Would be a great venue for afternoon tea for sure. ;) The Caesar wasn't bad, for dressing is strong with the remnants of the anchovies, which was too prominent for my hubby to eat. Their arugula salad is tasty and I was so loving the blueberries and pears. The mushroom bisque was so delicious, creamy and thick. Even encountered a few chunks of mushroom pieces in it. It reminds me of the luscious mushroom bisque at Cafe Muse and just as good. Their house bread rolls are good, slightly sweet. The phone actually works in the old phone booth here. The cutouts for the film lens are still in the wall above the main entrance. This is a fun spot for lunch and would be fantastic for afternoon tea even. The sandwiches we had them to go. The chicken sandwich is also on what appears to be the homemade challah bread. The challah bread is so soft and billowy and yummy from here. Kudos on the breads. The bread is tasty on its own and makes it even better with what's between them. I preferred the Russian dressing that was with the turkey hoagie. The chicken sandwich would be even better with some additional dressing or sauce of some sort. Both sandwiches were still very good. The service here was excellent overall. I will be back here again for a nice, leisurely lunch or afternoon meal. It's a great spot for a lunch or meal any day of the week, I would think. It feels like a great escape once you step through the threshold of this old movie theater. I love what they did with the inside, whilst still maintaining some of the key elements of the theater for this restaurant. First of all, the highlight of the visit was definitely the decor!! It's very eclectic, but very fun. Even the bathroom is cool! We started with a round of drinks. We got the spicy Bloody Mary, the Irish coffee and wanted the seasonal mojito, which was a grapefruit orange flavor but they were out so settled with the classic mojito. The spicy bloody was one of the best we've ever had. The mojito was mostly club soda and was very weak. The Irish coffee was incredibly strong, but delicious! For brunch we went with 2 southern Benny's and a huevos rancheros. The southern Benny's were fairly tasty, but the gravy was a little bland and needed more flavor. The pork belly was a little fatty too, but overall with some hot sauce the dish was good. The poached eggs in everything were perfectly cooked. The potatoes were very crispy and hot as well, but could've used some seasoning. Overall a great experience. Will be back for lunch on a weekday. Food presentation was on point, the quiche included edible flowers. The outdoor eating area was great; shaded in the afternoon and colorful flowers, didn't even notice street noise. The bummers; service, our server was not super attentive and we had to ask for obvious things (silverware for dessert after plates were cleared.) He literally walked away in the middle of talking, more than once. It took much less time for us to get our food than it took to have our order taken after being sat. Price, the food was good, but imo doesn't match what you get. Was also charged more than menu price for an item, it was a $1 difference, but still a difference. Food was underwhelming and expensive. Had the steak and eggs, the steak lacked depth and was extremely chewy. The poached eggs tasted like they were cooked with vinegar and there was water still sitting in the dish. The potatoes were unseasoned and overcooked additionally, the amount of food that came with the dish was very limited not at all worth the cost of the meal. There was a limited number of people there and despite this the wait service was lacking and not attentive. Also I received no coffee refills while there or any other refills for that matter. I came here for dinner with 2 other friends a week or so before Thanksgiving. I made reservations because there was an option on the website. I'm not sure how long we would have waited without them as we had little to no wait with them. The restaurant is a mixture of individual party tables as well as long one for family style seating. You get seated amongst items for sale which is a unique concept. Everything decoration wise was for sale at our table. We got seated at a family style table with another party. It was not hard to have a conversation with my friends as the restaurant is setup so you can talk. The menu has everything labeled as to what is gluten free and what is not. You need to be prepared for dinner to take a while as nothing is rushed and also for the options to be unique. You get started with bread and though I do not know how it tasted, I know that my friends enjoyed it. I had a small glass of white wine, a Pinot Grigio which was quite good. I also had a butternut squash soup that was a bit on the sweet side. For my dinner, I went with the duck confit and wild mushroom pasta. Dinner was quite good and tasty. The best part of my meal was dessert. I went with chocolate pot au creme in a martini glass. This was so good...I would go back for dessert any time. Mixed review coming up for Three Cats ... I guess overall it's a 3.5/5 from me, so I'll round up to 4, especially since I'm coming back in a few weeks for brunch with my book club (am hoping I will have a better experience then). Originally my plan was to try out their patio tonight, but it was pouring out, so I changed our reservation on Resy to 6:15pm for indoors. I have been to Three Cats maybe once or twice - the first time was before it became an actual restaurant, and it was just a small cafe in the front of the store, and the second was for a Yelp shopping event a few years ago. We arrived on time and were greeted by the hostess, who asked us to wait for a table to be set for us, and said she would let us know when it was ready. I was surprised that most of the tables were taken, since there were still a lot of open reservation slots on Resy. We browsed some of the greeting cards and other things they had for sale but the hostess never came to get us; one of the other (greeters? hosts?) saw us browsing and asked if he could help us find anything, and I said no, we are waiting for our table ... I think he went to check with hostess #1 and soon we were seated. Our waiter was pleasant but a little distant. My boyfriend ordered one of the Brew Detroit IPAs - Three Cats has a large selection of Brew Detroit beers, it seems - and said it was pretty good. For entrees, I was excited to try their 8 oz. filet, as I had seen a photo of it on their Instagram page and it looked really good. Unfortunately, when it arrived, after my first bite, it really had no flavor to it, other than a charred taste - I don't even think they used salt or pepper on it. My boyfriend tried a bit of it too and agreed. I RARELY send back dishes, but this time I did, and the waiter said something like "That's how it's made - can we get you a different dish?" so I ordered my second choice, the Three Day Brined Half Chicken. I was pretty disappointed that they couldn't try to cook it differently or at least add some salt and pepper though ... the texture/consistency was very nice, it just had no flavor. On the other hand, my boyfriend ordered the Frutti di Mare, which came with housemade pasta, mussels, shrimp, and (one) scallop, and he really enjoyed it. I tried a bit of the pasta, too (I'm not a seafood fan) and it was very good. My Three Day Brined Half Chicken was also very good. It came with mashed potatoes and asparagus (same as the steak I originally ordered; I had tried a bite of the potatoes before it was taken away and those were also good), and the brine they used for it was delicious - a little salty but otherwise no complaints from me. The decor and everything is also really cool here - I believe it used to be Clawson's old movie theater (hence the marquee out front), and it's sister store next door, Leon & Lulu, used to be a roller rink, so they had some skates on the wall here as an homage to that. I used the bathroom a few times and it had high-quality foamy soap and individual hand towels, which was also a nice touch. Because of that and also the fact that they let me choose a different entree (and charged us for the chicken, not the steak, although it was only a $2 difference), I'm giving Three Cats an "optimistic" 4 out of 5 stars. I would say the experience as a whole was only 3 stars tonight, but I'll be back to try their brunch menu in a few weeks, for patio dining, so I'm hoping that that experience will be a 4- or 5-star one. read more

I've been sleeping on Clawson! There are so many extremely amazing places here that have flown under my radar for so long...TOO long! Three Cats is just the latest discovery of mine, courtesy of a friend's recommendation, that honestly angers me that I didn't know existed SOONER! When I walked in here, I was instantly obsessed with it. If you have been to Leon & Lulu, which is just next door, it has the same exact vibe and almost serves as an overflow of the Leon & Lulu shop! There are some racks of cards, furniture with price tags on them, and other items for purchase in this very open and eclectically designed space! But obviously, Three Cats is a restaurant first and foremost. I just really love the vibe here and I can't believe I've passed by it for so long without realizing it was a restaurant. I mean, I can believe it because they preserved the outside Clawson Theater look and I'm not even sure if I saw a sign for Three Cats on the street-facing side of the building, but still! I wish I had known about this place sooner. I'm not even sure if I'm doing a good job describing it because it's just SO unique and such a fun dining experience in and of itself surrounded by the ambiance. If I had to describe the theme of the decor, I think the best description would be to say vintage traveling circus aesthetic?! They serve your food on gorgeously designed plates, all the cutlery looks so vintage and precious, and I can't get enough of this space and want to come here over and over again so I can sit in different spots and soak up all the surroundings this place has to offer! Truly, the decor of Three Cats is enough to give the restaurant 5 stars. But let's actually talk about the food! Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free friendly! The MUSHROOM BISQUE is BEYOND! Easily 10 stars if I could award 10 stars! I think I've discovered my new favorite soup, and if you're a mushroom lover, you are sure to love this soup as well! I honestly wish I could have 3 bowls of it and call it a day! I also ordered the salmon on a bed of their risotto. It was good, but noticeably under-seasoned. My friend who was dining with me had ordered the duck confit and it was served similarly on a bed of risotto. I was still enjoying my soup as she dug into her entree and her duck was bland as well, so she had asked for salt and pepper shakers to be brought to the table. When I finally dug into my salmon, I was glad she had asked for the salt and pepper, so I could add some to mine, which significantly improved the dish. Their soup had been SO flavorful, so the entrees lacking in flavor had been a complete 180 and honestly very surprising. And I am the kind of person who RARELY adds more salt/seasoning to a prepared dish for me from a dining establishment, so this was definitely unusually under-seasoned and clearly, it wasn't just my dish! Either way, I'll definitely be back to try other items on their menu, because so much looked good and the entire experience has been more than worth it! I heard their brunch is extremely good as well (we went during dinnertime) and has more mushroom-related items on it, so I might have to come back during this time! Additionally, if you enjoy cocktails, I heard their cocktails are very good here as well! All in all, Three Cats is 100000% worth dining at! Came here on a Sunday around 10am, it was empty. Service was good! Ordered the coffee cake to start. It was dry and didn't have much cinnamon flavor. The cornflake French toast was also dry, which I'm confused on how it's dry because it's clearly deep fried. Even the syrup didn't make it better. The omelette was much better than the French toast. It was slightly underdone to my liking, but the potatoes made up for it. They were smashed thin and cooked to a nice crisp! I wish I'd ordered a whole plate of just these. Came here for Mothers Day Brunch. No one in the party had ever been here before so it was a new experience for us all. I'll start off by saying the atmosphere of this place is amazing! Everything is so bright and cute. To start off our table ordered some mimosas with OJ, a beer, a bloody mary, and a coffee. The bloody mary and mimosas were delicious. For entrees, I ordered the corned beef hash (scrambled eggs instead of poached eggs), and my fiancé ordered the benedict with lox. When I ordered the hash, I asked if there was any way to have it with no onions. The waitress told me that it was already mixed in and there was no way to separate it out. Oddly enough, when I received my dish, I maybe found one little chunk of pepper and onion total throughout the entire thing. It was very bland and didn't have much flavor to it at all. It did come with a homemade everything bagel, some boursin cheese, and preserves. I can honestly say that was the best part about coming here was the bagel an boursin. My fiancés benedict with lox was a little better than mine, but nothing to rave about. I ordered a second mimosa, but to my surprise it was not OJ like I had ordered the first time, it was either peach or mango. My waitress assured me that it was OJ, and I assured her it most definitely wasn't. She never apologized or offered to switch it to get me a new one that actually had OJ in it. I wish I would have had a better experience here because the place is so cute! But the food is nothing to write home about and the service is average at best, so unfortunately I just do not see myself running back to eat here again. read more

Went here for the first time today and was so excited for brunch! First the good: 5 stars for atmosphere - there's lots of cute stuff to look at while you wait for your table, the bathroom is on point (and uses reusable hand towels ) 5 stars for having such a variety on their menu! Lots of vegetarian options, turkey sausage available, and many fun, inventive choices. 2 stars for execution. I had the California style Benedict with a side of turkey sausage and it fell completely flat for me. The tomatoes were underripe, the eggs were undercooked, and the avocado that they subbed for hollandaise was too thick to accomplish that purpose, so the whole thing ate very dry. Add in too dull of a knife to cut through the untoasted bagel they used instead of an English muffin and it was overall an unpleasant experience. The sausage was also overcooked and chewy. The real reason it tipped into 3 stars instead of 4 was the manager though. He stopped by our table trying to push us to order mimosas (which I didn't even see on the brunch cocktail list??) and when I said that I'm sober and he was being too pushy, rather than leaving he mansplained how they had mocktails (that also weren't on the menu) and a mimosa didn't need to contain alcohol. He kept trying to get us to order a flight of something even though it seemed obvious that we weren't interested, and then brought up that he knew a person with a substance use disorder (presumably to justify his attempts to push alcohol??). Overall it was awkward and killed the vibe. He claimed that they're planning to put the mocktails on the menu, and I hope they do- but I also hope that they stop letting this person badger customers. I would consider returning for lunch service to see if it's better than our brunch experience. read more

Loved the cute cafe inside here! I had a Turkey Bacon Avocado wrap and this thing was huge! The bacon inside was crispy, the turkey delightful and fresh and there was lots of avocado. I'm usually not a "eat half," take the rest home kinda guy when it comes to wraps, but there was so much food in here, I almost didn't finish it! I also had to indulge in some coffee and enjoyed a smooth roast with some espresso in it. All in all; I'd love to come here again and thought the line up of sandwiches + baked goods was perfect for the place! read more

Went on a 90+ degree day and it was a bit busy. However, the host was very nice and communicative. As I overheard, understaffed. We sat outside under an awning, I think, but it got humid very fast. I did get a cocktail; refreshing, light, and tasty. I can't remember which one but it doesn't look it it's still on the menu. My girlfriend and I split the smoked salmon flatbread. When I tell you we devoured it so fast, we really did and I didn't even get a picture! Light, fast, flavorful. And of course, my smart brain decided to get 'the rainy day': grilled cheese with I believe two types of cheese and a cup of tomato soup. I think the tomato soup had a bit of creamer Fran he, delish. Went for brunch. Great decor and ambiance. Staff were friendly, but service was not great, looked like it was understaffed. Food was not good. Crabcake Bennie was very fishy. It was 2 crabcake with poached egg on top and a slight drizzle of Hollandaise. The asparagus was thin, overcooked, not edible. No muffin or bread under the cake. Ordered a side of toast which was $5 for one piece of bread cut on a diagonal. Other brunch egg entrees also did not come with toast. Had to order additional bread for those. When we first walked in (reservation pre made) the hostess' greeting was: "we have a set time limit of 1.5 hours"...WTH?! Ok, but when it took 15 minutes for our server to ask if we wanted coffee we started getting nervous-lol. 15 minutes later he took our order. Food review: my scrambled eggs were hellacious (aka awful). I had to flag down a server to ask for ketchup and salt. He never reappeared. So i flagged down another one and he did bring it to the table but this was a total of 10-15 minutes later. Now the eggs were ice cold as were to potatoes. Eggs~ Way over done; actually browned. Potatoes were so over cooked I had to scoop them up because my fork couldn't pierce them (can't make this up!). The bacon didn't taste right and my breakfast companions took one bite and left theirs on the plate too. I didn't want to make a fuss and ask if they liked it...that was obvious. Coffee had a weird sour taste. How could this meal get any worse you ask??? The pretentious host came over and said our time was up at the table. Lol- omg. There were 6 (yes I counted them) empty tables and NO one was waiting. I was dining with friends from out of town and thought this place would be a "special treat". Ummmm- maybe for the 3 actual cats they're serving, but for humans? It was an embarrassment for me to no end! How does the saying go? One unhappy customer tells how many people? I love eating here. Had brunch here on Sunday and everything we ordered was amazing! Had a great waitress too named Heidi. Its so beautiful to sit here in this beautiful place and have brunch. Great drink menu too with specialty drinks. Check out the plates and glasses they are so unique. A lot of old indiana glass and china. Love how she pulls all this together. read more

Carrying on in the tradition of its late, great founder Matt Prentice, Three Cats provides a homey, relaxing vibe coupled with thoroughly professional service, and just plain good food (not to imply the food is plain - just good). Cute little brunch spot with an expansive menu. Ample outdoor seating and it was shaded so super comfortable. We got the duck confit hash and the cornflake French toast along with a Bloody Mary and mojito. Drinks were subpar. Mojito had zero actual mint leaves and was very weak. Bloody Mary was decent but nothing to write home about. Food presentation was great. Duck was tender and juicy. French toast was crispy. In general the flavors seemed just a bit flat. Waiting for 15 mins after being seated and it was only after my boyfriend made the comment, "does anyone know we're here"? Did a server approach us. Right as our food was being delivered we were informed the restaurant was out of what we ordered so the server took it upon himself to substitute our entree. Never once was provided beverage refills. Watched as our server had other tables getting up and approaching him with questions, Had to flag him down to get the bill. Never asked how our meal was. Food was cold and drink was short poured for the price. Great ambiance, but that's about it. Most likely won't be coming back. read more
