Wow is all I can say. Ordering like I typically do, I requested two sides of bacon with my egg white omelette. The omelette was incredible, and not just the flavor. It was about 5 inches wide by 11 inches long and 2 inches thick... Simply incredible. The two sides of bacon had to have been at least 6-8 ounces pre-cooked per side. The pancakes are the size of an LP and always provide me with at least two breakfasts. The bacon, egg and toast breakfast (with hash browns) overflows the plate and always gives me enough for a second breakfast. (The Hobbits would approve!) This is a loud, chaotic old-school breakfast joint. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it might help to bring lowered expectations (and a big appetite). TCD is located in an ancient storefront on Willi's main street. Parking is available on-street (good luck), or in the Willi Brew lot next door. If both places were to be open at the same time, you'd probably have to take a cab to the place, as the Willi Brew lot completely fills up during Thread City breakfast hours. All of the usual breakfast items are represented on the menu. Beware the pancakes...as big as a hubcap! And that's kind of what makes one overlook the general low-rent atmosphere of the place -- you're not paying for atmosphere, you're here for the big breakfasts. And they're big. Usually that's to compensate for poor food, but not here. It's actually pretty darned good, in that diner food kind of way. But it's not exactly cheap, until you see the size of the plate you ordered. That's the strangest part of TCD, the pricing. It's all over the map. An add-on of a meat side might be half the price of a side dish, or not. You gotta poke around the menu for different options. Some stuff seems way too expensive for a diner breakfast, but then you get your big plate. For instance, a couple of eggs and a side of hash and a cup of coffee will cost you a bundle...but there is a special with a couple of eggs, a side of hash, and a cup of coffee that will save you five bucks. Again, check out your options before ordering. All that stuff aside, food is quite good. My Western Omelet (with a side of salsa) rang in at nearly $10, but it was HUGE. Looked like a four-egg omelet, way more than I could eat. A very generous side of home fries overflowed the place, along with big thick slices of home-madey looking rye bread. It wasn't just big, it was hot and very good. A good suggestion for two or three people is for one to order a full breakfast, and the others order al la carte, then split up the sides. The only other thing to address is the diner itself. The big, open room is noisy, with walls covered in historic Willimantic artwork. A smaller dining room adjoins the main area, but the service area and kitchen are right there with you. You'll hear the cooks yelling at the servers, you'll see the rough and tumble action of hash-slingers. It's all good. It's one of those places you like despite itself. read more

I counted 4 waiters/waitresses for about 30 tables. The cook screams out names almost constantly instead of simply ringing a bell. Due to a recent work transfer my drive takes me through downtown Willimantic on a daily basis. Several months ago I noticed the Thread City Diner and thus began my contemplation of adding it to our "Must-try" list of restaurants. I'm extremely sorry to say that it took this long to get ourselves in the door for breakfast but I'm extremely glad that we finally took the drive, enjoyed our meal immensely and have now moved the Thread City Diner from our "must try" list to our "we'll-be-back-again-and-again" list! First off, every single thing people write about the size of the servings is accurate! Come starving or prepare to leave with a doggy-bag which contains enough food for another meal (or two or three!) We arrived at about 9:15am last Saturday morning and though the place was bustling we were seated quickly, provided with menus and offered something to drink in very short order by our server, Stephanie. Coffee was provided and we spent the next several minutes trying to whittle down our choices for breakfast since it all looked and smelled great! I opted for the egg sandwich with double bacon and american cheese while my husband ordered a ham and swiss omelette with a side of bacon. Now, ordering double bacon on my sandwich was a very specific choice as far too often a restaurant's idea of an order of bacon and my idea differ by quite a lot! I imagined 2 slices of bacon on the whole sandwich so I doubled down. Stephanie, God bless her, tried to tell me that it would be a whole lot of bacon but previous experiences elsewhere had me sticking to the "double bacon" portion of my order. Enter our plates and our jaws dropped! I had read the reviews about the serving sizes here but until it's placed in front of you there's no way to adequately anticipate it! So now it's time to dig in.........and neither of us quite knew where to start but we're nothing if not brave so we "tapped forks" and dug in. I cut half of my sandwich in half hoping I could at least get that much eaten and that's truly all I could manage in one sitting. I like my food simple. Give me the staples prepared the way I ordered it and I'm extremely happy. Thread City Diner delivered all the way around on that count. Now, I've read some reviews here where people commented that it was "typical diner fare" like they were disappointed.......ummmmmmmmm, Hello! We love ourselves a good diner with "typical diner fare" so we were both pleased with our choices. One area where a diner (or any restaurant for that matter) can really mess up is with their bacon. Too salty, too chewy, too crisp, too fatty, too lean, too stingy with a serving! TCD did NONE of that! I don't know what brand they use but it's just right on all counts! Yeah, we'll be back! If you haven't been add it to your list of places to try. And now a little snippet about our server, Stephanie.......she knew her stuff and gave some great information/advice. (we'll listen more closely next time re: a serving size of bacon!) She was friendly, courteous, helpful and personable. I've been here a few times and it's the same deal every time , no matter day or time it's fairly busy and you will probably have a wait. Once inside the waitresses are surly and inattentive, I've actually had them tell me " it's gonna be a while before I get to you " and it is ten to twenty minutes before she comes back for drink order. Coffee is excellent. It's a terrific spot for a diner. On the corner of what appears to be a fairly old Main Street building, it's got high ceilings, old wood floors and comfortable tables and booths. The only downside to Thread City Diner is their early closing time: At least as of last time I was there (2013), they close at NOON everyday. I don't fault them for it -- just be advised. Are you even ready for this diner? If you are hungrier than you've ever been in your LIFE then this is the place for you, the portion sizes are literally insane. Great place for biscuits and gravy, huge-ass omelets, and breakfast sandwiches. The Molly sandwich is great, and just a plain egg and cheese sandwich is great too. I suggest asking for your breakfast sandwich of choice on a biscuit because their biscuits are great. My friends and I eat here hungover all the time and it gets us back into shape in no time. Excellent food and lots of it. If you leave hungry, it's your own fault. I had an enormous omelette, which they allowed me to include kielbasa from a daily special even though it wasn't on the menu. My companion had biscuits and sausage gravy that rivaled any I've had in the south. Their version of two eggs seems more like four. Staff was very friendly and attentive. My husband and I love Thread City, we typically get it to go, mostly since there is usually a line. It truly is a local place, friends and neighbors sit among the local college students, that quickly realized your buck goes further here than most places! We normally get the Molly" egg,cheese, and bacon sandwich on grilled Texas toast. And you DO NOT, need a magnifying glass to find the bacon, almost too much bacon, if that's at all possible!!! Also, believe it or not, there is bacon in the potatoes! So if you love the diversity in this little town, you cant help but love this hometown diner! ONLY NEGATIVE, THE CLOSE AT NOON! Well the reviews for the most part are spot on. The food was at best mediocre, with the portions being crazy big. After having to take a hike to liberty bank because they don't take cards I sat down and waited a good 15 minutes for my drink order to be taken. While ordering beware of how fast you drink it. While the food is cheap the drinks are not. They charge you for every refill, even coffee. When you take the entire experience into a summery go somewhere else. I will not be back. If you want a lot of so so food then this is your place, just don't complain of heart burn when your done because I told you so. read more

We were visiting family for Thanksgiving and stopped in for a cup of coffee before our traditional family "day after Thanksgiving hike". Ended up ordering a plate of bacon and a plate of homefries. I understand my mom and I came in almost before they were closing. However it doesn't excuse the horrible food we were served. While we were seated I heard a rude waitress scream loudly "THEY BETTER ORDER NOW!" That being said I order the first thing I could think of, pancakes. When I received the giant pancake it looked delicious. However biting into it i discovered it was filled with left over filth. I had chunks of onions and potatoes stuck inside and underneath my pancake. While being rushed to eat our horrible food all the waitresses were gathered around counting their tips complaining about not being able to go home. I don't recommend this ace. if I could give this place 0 stars I would! I came here with my fiancé and 1.5 year old.....it was 5-10 min after we sat before we were even greeted and asked for drinks, my fiancé and I both order coffee and I order a pancake for my son. needless to say when the "waitress" aka the owners wife got back to our table she had one coffee and a pancake for my son.......upon cutting into the pancake I see batter oozing out because it was not cooked properly....when I asked for them to fix the error the woman said nothing no apology just walks over to the grill has the cook flip it a few times and brings it back....and walks away! mind you we still only have 1 coffee! I didn't get my drink until after my food came when I had to ask for a THIRD time!!! we will NEVER be back !!!!! read more
