The Flour Girl Cafe and Bakery - Sourdough

The Flour Girl Cafe and Bakery

"I love the flower girl Oh, I don't know just why…read moreShe simply caught my eye I love the flower girl she seemed so sweet and kind. She crept into my mind." (The Cowsills) Visiting the Flour Girl Café and Bakery will put you squarely in the middle of a Flour Girl Village with four distinct components. Within the village is the Flour Girl Café at 16 Main, the Flour Girl Bakery at 14 Main, the Flour Girl Country Store at 12 Main, and the Door Yard in a rear courtyard for dining and hosting events between the bakery and country store. Today we had breakfast at the Café and followed it up with a visit to the bakery. A common thread at both stops was the wonderful personality and friendliness of the staff we interacted with. The counterperson at the Café could not have been nicer and her personality radiated throughout the room like a beam of sunshine. She welcomed every new customer as though they were long lost relatives, exchanged some pleasant small talk and then diligently repeated the orders before ringing them up. She was fantastic. The café keeps things humming all week long--open Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 4:00, Saturdays from 7:30 to 4:00, and Sundays from 7:30 to 3:00. Flour Girl Café covers you from breakfast through lunch. Mornings bring all the good stuff: coffees and lattes, smoothies, egg sandwiches, bagels, wraps, waffles, toasts--you get the idea. Swing by at lunchtime and you'll find sandwiches, paninis, salads, burgers and soups waiting for you. Oh, and as a bonus perk, the bread for sandwiches and burgers is made at the bakery next door, so freshness is something the Flour Girl takes seriously. For breakfast, we had a Bacon, Egg, Lettuce, Tomato, and Cheese Bagel ($7.99) and an Avocado Toast (2 pieces) with Feta and tomato ($9.99), Two 16-ounce drip coffees were $3.50 apiece. The portions were large, and my avocado toast on sourdough was fantastic. We sat in the first-floor dining room and took in the pretty interior design of pinks, pastels, and floral color theme. Now, on to the bakery! The Flour Girl Bakery may be best known for its sourdough breads, but the fun doesn't stop there. You'll also find muffins, cookies, scones, their award winning cinnamon rolls, and a rotating lineup of fresh baked breads. And those cinnamon rolls? They spark a full on weekend rush--people happily line up just to snag one before they disappear. We picked up a box of mixed goods, muffins, cake squares, and a big hunk of jalapeno cornbread that will go perfectly with a homemade batch of lentil chili sitting in my fridge. We saw an adorable feature at the bakery, where plastic eggs were hidden within the store for the kiddies to find and cash in for a cookie. It's the little customer service features we saw at the Flour Girl's Café, Bakery, and Country Store that made today's visit so pleasant.

I think there may be a small sign but i heard it several times during my visit - people asking for breakfast! Might be something to reconsider or place a visible sign underlining breakfast stops at 11:30 AM. Anyhow, pivoted to the lunch menu - pesto chicken sandwich was delicious. Did not love the pasta salad, wish there was the option for fry's. Really wanted the thanksgiving wrap but was out of stuck - next time hopefully! I will say - while there are many options for seating, especially with the new accommodation, it's tight. Chairs back into aisles and the table legs don't allow chairs to be pushed in that well. Entrance area can feel a bit overwhelming if it's busy. Staff super friendly and knowledgeable, will continue to come back.

Service was acceptable, but lacking in level of personality or engagement. For me, these characteristics are memorable and would help inspire me to come back. The food was as described on the menu, but equally lacking in pizazz. My Mexican Bowl was lukewarm and my friends' burgers were both well-done, despite only one of them asking for it being this way, and the fries were overcooked. I like crispy, but not to the over-the-top degree to which they were done. Bottom line: Eat here if you are hungry and your needs will be met, but this place could use a lift in sparkle and quality.

During my last visit it was relatively quiet, so I took a seat and went through the menu. My server was very friendly and professional. I took her recommendations and got the churro crepes and peppermint latte. Latte came out quick, same with the crepe. The latte was very sweet, lots of sugar and mint. Coffee flavor was obliterated, and was a bit much for me. Informed my server, offered a drip coffee as a replacement but I opted against. The crepe was going to be a lot of sugar too, so just sent it back. She communicated with her team to watch the syrup pours for future drinks, which is a good proactive move. The churro crepes. Conceptually is a good idea. The cheesecake filling was tasty and a reprieve from the avalanche of caramel syrup and sugar. The churros were warmed up but the server was very honest that they were not made on the spot. Outside of the churro was crunchy and inside was stuffed. The crepe was not warm, so I don't think it was made fresh to order either. When I asked the server, she insisted it was made to order. The price was 21 for the latte and crepe. The price of the crepe was high for the quantity and quality. The latte was reasonable for price, but might want to ask to go light on the syrup. Given the location, it's one of the few breakfast spots around that area. It's not bad, but they do price accordingly for the lack of competition. It's not a trek place, but it's one of the few options around without driving 15 minutes. If you need breakfast in that area, then it works.

So for the past 2- I was always coming up on the ONE weekday they were closed. I finally saw that it was open today and went out of my way to try it! It was absolutely worth the wait. I got a strawberry watermelon smoothie and you could tell it was all fresh fruit used and it was so delicious! Definitely top 5 best smoothies I've ever had!!! This reminded me of a smoothie I got in the Dominican Republic- so FRESH & so delicious. The place is small- but ADORABLE! It was IMMACULATE in terms of cleanliness. I didn't see a speck of dust anywhere and the toppings for ice cream- appeared out of a magazine- it looked that picture perfect. They have a little swing against a wall- with a neon sign that says the name of the establishment. It appeared functional- but I didn't want to break it- if it wasn't so I didn't try it. Lol. Service was great! Friendly and personable staff and my smoothie came right out. It took under 4 minutes for me to get this delicious smoothie!! The area is very cool. I parked roadside, but the entrance is around that side of the building and there was parking closer to the entrance. Out back, there is a great view of open land, grass and trees. There are a few chairs and benches and it's a peaceful spot to eat your food and let young kids run around. I bought an ice cream flight, two cookies, Silver Queen corn and heirloom tomatoes. I'm primarily reviewing the ice cream side of the business, but I'm factoring the other things in as well. Ice cream is always tasty, but I'd say the ice cream was about average for CT ice cream places making their own ice cream. I ordered a flight of Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Blueberry Cheesecake and Cow Palace. The flight came in a cup, rather than some sort of flat container that would keep the flavors separate. I feel like I had a good chance to try the Chocolate Peanut Butter (which reminded me of a Fudgesicle) and the Mint CC (which was kind of standard). The flavors below the top two, kind of blended into each other by the time I got to them. I picked up some cheesecake flavor and berry flavor and chocolate chips. All good. A highlight was the two cookies (a chocolate chip and a peanut butter chip). The kind person who helped me with my ice cream said she made the cookies that morning. My wife ate most of the cookies, but I tried both and they were fresh and delicious. I used a tomato for a BLT. It was good. The Silver queen corn was also good. Red Barn had a reasonably good selection of in season produce, baked goods such as pies, butter, milk, jarred goods. A good place to shop for stuff like that. Four Stars
