Omelette with house made sausage. Delicious

Great breakfast, service, and prices! We came around 10:30am on a Sunday morning and were seated right away, despite how small it is inside. I ordered an omelet with sausage that is HOMEMADE (SO GOOD), onions, and swiss cheese. It came with toast and homefries as well. The homefries were delicious and the bread was super fresh. My friend got 2 eggs, toast and homefries for only $5 and she loved it. Food came out super quick as well. Really great place for breakfast!! I have heard their biscuits and gravy is good, and I'll have to try that. I will definitely be back to order lunch as well. They also take credit cards which was not mentioned on Yelp.

On the recommendation of some locals whom (or "who", I get this right about half the time) I met at Harry's Place (up the road), decided to give it a try. Kind of nondescript building on the outside, with a hard pack lot. But seeing plenty of cars in the lot is always a good sign. Sat at a stool across from the griddle, and had coffee (excellent) and home fries (steaming and well spiced, if just a tad soft). Basic diner food. Lots of stools, and a few small tables. The short order cook, Kristina (?), is a rock star. Keeps everything running smoothly. The owner, Jodie, very personable. Overall, great service, fair prices. The type of place where they probably go thru 15 dozen eggs (maybe more) on a typical day. CBH is canned, but looked damn good sizzling on the griddle in front of me.

A bit of Americana that is fast disappearing is preserved beautifully by Christine who is the current owner of Herman's Diner. Most diners are where the locals tend to hang out for breakfast and or lunch. Seating is limited, probably less than 25 seats but I am sure take-out orders make up for the lack of seating. Christine has been doing this kind of work for 31 years and knows her away around the diner business. Hospitality, good service and good food are all in evidenced here at Herman's. They serve the diner classics; don't stray outside of their lane; offer simple time tested menu items while offering customers maximum flexible menu combinations. Customer service is paramount, all the folks who work here truly understand they are first in the Hospitality business; second in the foodservice industry. It's nice to see industrious workers who smile, are happy; efficient and engaging with their customers. This is one of those places Norman Rockwell would be pleased to visit and paint.

Update: I brought it down a few stars, we went on a mid morning weekday and there were only 3 other people there besides us. The cook was someone we've never seen before and same with the waitress, We ordered two basic omelettes, it took literally 45 minutes for us to get them and they were complaining while cooking the entire time. Plus the bacon AND egg in my husbands wasn't even cooked so he ended up getting sick. It's definitely not normal for them but pushed us away for now.. Honestly wasn't sure about it based on the size and reading its cash only, but decided to give it a shot. We walked in and sat down at a small table. It's mostly bar and a few 2-seater tables. We ordered coffee. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and my husband an omelet. It took an extra bit of time to get the food to us, but we didn't mind because we could literally see them making it. When it was delivered, amazing. My sausage gravy was creamy and perfectly salty. The biscuits underneath were definitely homemade and the home fries were cooked by a pro. My husbands omelet was just as delicious, you can tell the veggies were fresh and the toast was homemade. The portions were huge and the bill cheap. The staff was extremely friendly and personable. We actually got 2 of the largest muffins I've ever seen on the way out. Even though I literally couldn't eat anymore I had to try them. We chose the cranberry white chocolate and it was every bit as dreamy as I hoped it'd be. This is absolutely our new breakfats

Biscuits w/ sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, corned beef hash and home fries.

Great little place, service was good and the food was amazing. We had the biscuits and gravy with eggs and home fries. The sausage in the gravy was homemade and had great flavor. Our side of corned beef hash was cooked perfectly crispy. They also take credit card now! This was our first time there and we will definitely be back.

Epic double burger and fries - a true classic!…read more Had the double burger with fries and it was absolutely epic! The patties were thick, juicy, and packed with flavor - exactly what you'd hope for from a historic Connecticut drive-in like Harry's Place. The fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned, making the whole meal a standout. This place has been around for over 100 years for a reason. Great portions, no-frills deliciousness, and that old-school vibe. If you're craving a solid burger and fries (or their famous clams/hot dogs), this is the spot. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area! Highly recommend - 10/10 on the burger front.

I still think Harry's place is overrated…read more First of all, it's cash only, but don't forget there's atm right there at the counter, $2.50 per transaction The milkshakes were nine dollars a pop, and my friend and I each had a hotdog at 3.99 each The milkshakes were average of best typical of any place you get a chocolate milkshake The hotdog were small, toasted on a New England roll, which was buttery and pretty good They put the mustard and relish under the hotdog. This is kind of weird. I don't think this is a New England thing or a Connecticut thing. Had I known there was mustard and relish at a condiment counter around the corner, I would've just got a plain dog. The place gets busy for lunch and there's only one order taker. So the line can get out of that testy, especially if you're in a hurry. I know many say this is an institution and I shouldn't be speaking negatively about it, but it is what it is it's overrated. Yes it's been around for a long time, but it's super expensive for a hot dog and milkshake. I see no value here. I should've went up and around the corner to that bar that serves those really great lobster rolls. Colchester is a beautiful town, with many wonderful choices for a place to eat. I don't think this is one of them.

The parking lot is 'smallish' on the right side of the building and flows right to left in one direction, so be sure to look for the 'enter' sign. There are three steps up into the diner so be aware of that if you have difficulty using steps. Also, the restroom is tiny: like so small the sink is about a foot long by half as much wide, small. We stop in here on our trips out to Groton. Last visit we stopped for a late breakfast/early lunch. I ordered a coffee and it came in a nice big mug and is a mellow blend with a smooth finish. There are photo descriptions on the table of what your eggs will look like based on how you order it, so no surprises. What a great idea. The table holds napkins, hot sauces, salt & pepper, jellies, creamer and sugars. The staff are pleasant. Some are more chatty than others. There are definitely some regulars here each time we visit. The menu has lots of breakfast options but there are no substitutions so you may need to order al a carte or get a different 'meal' option and add-on an item. Just a heads up. They have plenty of toast options including English muffins. The lunch menu is a variety of sandwiches and burgers. Fries are tasty. Lettuce and tomato on your sandwiches are fresh. I can't think of a single disappointment we've had here. If you are in the area and enjoy a nice diner experience, stop in to Norm's.
