I still think Harry's place is overrated. First of all, it's cash only, but don't forget there's atm right there at the counter, $2.50 per transaction The milkshakes were nine dollars a pop, and my friend and I each had a hotdog at 3.99 each The milkshakes were average of best typical of any place you get a chocolate milkshake The hotdog were small, toasted on a New England roll, which was buttery and pretty good They put the mustard and relish under the hotdog. This is kind of weird. I don't think this is a New England thing or a Connecticut thing. Had I known there was mustard and relish at a condiment counter around the corner, I would've just got a plain dog. The place gets busy for lunch and there's only one order taker. So the line can get out of that testy, especially if you're in a hurry. I know many say this is an institution and I shouldn't be speaking negatively about it, but it is what it is it's overrated. Yes it's been around for a long time, but it's super expensive for a hot dog and milkshake. I see no value here. I should've went up and around the corner to that bar that serves those really great lobster rolls. Colchester is a beautiful town, with many wonderful choices for a place to eat. Jumped in line and snagged a menu from the front. It's a simple menu, burgers, dogs, fries, some seafood and whole belly clams. So a good selection. Ordered a red hot, a dog and a cheeseburger to try them out. The hot dogs were good, grilled well and plenty of onions. The buns were a little dry, so not the best buns. The red hot was a standard basic red hot. Little spicy but one-note. They did cut and grill the red hot though which I greatly appreciate. The fries were generic but functional, nothing special but cooked correctly. The burger is small, but the quality is stellar. They either grind their own or source their meat from a skilled butcher. The meat was tender, juicy, and coursely ground to retain that steak like texture and flavor. They season their patties, and cook it to a nice medium well. In a land of smash burgers, they decided to go the juicy route. I like a good smash burger, but both smashed and juicy styles need a skilled cook to pull it off. The cooks at Harry's know how to cook and season correctly for their style of burger, and the end result is awesome for the location. If you happen to want a burger stand that's just a step above what other burger shacks offer, then Harry's is a very solid choice. Harry's Place is definitely an institution of roadside eats. Hamburgers, hotdogs, some fried seafood. You can smell all the deliciousness as you pull in! It's counter service and there's a few picnic tables out front near the counter, but plenty more in a much more serene area out back. The burgers are the standout here imo. They look small, but they're quite filling and always juicy and flavorful. Always add grilled onions!! It's the best part! Hot dogs are good too, but apparently you have to ask for a griddled bun? At least according to a server when my husband went to ask about his cold bun. I find that kind of odd, but i guess just specify every detail to be safe.. They definitely aren't cheap either. Don't expect to come here and feed a family on a budget. Also, the bathrooms leave a little something to be desired. I'm not expecting the Ritz and it's certainly a step up from a port-o-potty, but they're pretty dirty and poorly stocked. Harry's is a local treasure! The double cheese burgers are the best, and are a value compared to big chain restaurants. Whenever friends come to Colchester, this is where we meet to eat. Food is good but staff not so much! Here's an idea...why not do things a normal way like have a number board so you know your food is ready & not just some girl yelling everybody name. Its personal in a bad way. Drove over 30 min to wait over 30 min...only to find out my food had been done so long ago it was cold. Girl gave me a funny look only when I asked if they called my name as she was handing me cold box. So I go tell the guy they really should "scream" ur name more than once & just leave peoples food to get cold & he just looked at me. Didn't even offer me my tip back...NOTHING!!! Go to Harry's every year when I come up to the family lake house. He serves hamburgers, hotdogs, fries. They specialize in breaded clams, oysters and lobster roll with butter. Speaking of that I was very disappointed because the lobster roll was $30.00! Really, really! Took a ride with the wife on a beautiful Saturday and decided to head for lunch. I was in the mood for seafood and my wife is always up to try a lobster roll. It's a bit of a hunt for her. We came across this find with the help of a Yelp search and it wasn't far away. Having never been here we decided to look at the menu ahead of time. There was the lobster roll and I wanted a scallop platter. The gentleman who took our order at the walk up was very nice. Total for the order was $72 for a lobster roll with sweet potato fries and mine was a platter with scallops and I swapped out the fries for onion rings. Plus we both had a soda. I was expecting much more quality for what we paid. Seating is outside with picnic tables all around so we picked a nice shady spot for our meal. Let's get down to the food. Best I can say about it is MEH. Previously frozen seafood that was over cooked to get it unfrozen it what the texture for both the lobster and scallops. I had such high hopes because it looked fantastic. It was flavorless and very tough. Tartar sauce is commercial and prepackaged. Onion rings almost seemed to be dipped in a batter as thick as pancake batter and flavorless also. No salt on them and same for my wife's sweet potato fries. Best thing I had there was the coleslaw and that was fantastic. Wish I had a double portion. All in all I would say try a burger if you are ever stopping in because the seafood just didn't work. I grew up stopping at Harry's either on the way-to the beach (Ocean Beach Park in New London), or on the way back, so I was excited when my brother stopped here in our way to RI. My sister in law ordered a double burger and said it was very good. My brother ordered the fried fish and chips and said it was "ok" ... the breading was too thick and not that tasty. I had ordered the clam strip platter, and we ordered onion rings for the table. The breading on the fried clam strips, after eating half of them, I still hadn't tasted any of the clams. Same can be said about the onion rings. I was very very disappointed. I refuse to give Harry's less than 4 stars though... I have-to believe they care enough to look into this breading issue after they read this review? This restaurant has been a family favorite for too many years not to fix less than stellar items, especially the batter on their fried foods. Soooo with that said, as long as you stay away from the fried foods (not worth the calories), for now and you should be ok. Harry's Place in Colchester is a CT Institution. It's been open for 100+ years. No matter how you look at Harry's, it's at least a solid burger, dog and fried seafood stand with outdoor seating open in warmer times. In my experience, the people who think of Harry's as a 5 Star Place, grew up going to Harry's and have great memories. I grew up in Ohio and have no longtime memories of Harry's. I like occasionally visiting when I'm in the area though. Harry's grills a solid burger. Today, I ordered a 1/4 pound cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce and tomato. For a quarter pound burger, it is taller and less wide than you would expect. Every part of the burger was above average, but not up there with the best CT burger places for me. I also ordered a side of fried calamari. It was good. I would order it again. Harry's often has a line. I thought they managed the line fairly well and service was friendly. I think I waited in line about 10 minutes and waited another 10-15 minutes for my food after I ordered. Four Stars for Harry's Place, but it's definitely one of those places that you should check out if you haven't. read more

We've been wanting to try this place for a while, and finally stopped for lunch on 10/12/24. I wish we hadn't. My clam strip roll dinner w/fries were ok, hence the reason to 2 stars instead of 1. Little man's hot dog was ok, but the bun was stale. Mama's grilled chicken sandwich was served cold and literally had no taste. The onion rings were not crispy, and were very greasy, so we threw the majority of the (large) order away. All in all, it was a waste of $35, and we definitely won't be back. We found the portions to be generous in the food we ordered, which was fries, a double bacon cheeseburger, a slaw dog, a lobster roll, and two medium fountain drinks. The drinks would easily pass as large other places. The lobster roll was of the hot buttered variety, lots of good meat, and not so buttered that the bun fell apart. The hot dog was a tasty Hummel Brothers dog topped with about too much slaw by half. Super cool little locals spot right off the road. A group of friends and I went out Kayaking and decided to come here after for a bite to eat. It was a gorgeous day to sit outside and there were tons of seating options and covered with umbrellas for shade. The menu was extensive with tons of your typical American food style options like hamburgers and hot dogs. The staff were super nice and very quick with getting the order out. Went there right after it was announced that they won the WFSB "Best Burger" contest. The place was packed. Ordered a regular burger and a cheeseburger for my wife. Also some onion rings and coleslaw. The burgers came on "slider" size rolls and unfortunately they fit perfectly. While they were basically tasteless, at least they were freshly ground from Noel's market. The onion rings were made from old oversized onions and the batter was unspectacular. The coleslaw was a tad soggy but did have a little "bite". Won't go out of my way for what turns out to be a winner in a loyalty contest, not a food flavor, quality, or presentation contest. read more
