We made an appointment to look for wood to make two shelves and it was an amazing experience! Jeffrey and his assistant walked us through the lumber yard and talked to us about the history of all the wood, how it's procured, where it came from, etc. You can tell Jeffrey is passionate about this business and it was so fun to see that passion while he talked to us. He also showed us around the shop and explained all the cool things he and his team made while his assistant cut our wood to the exact size and loaded it in our car for us. I was on the hunt for a very long, distressed looking fireplace mantle and after weeks of research I came across This Old Wood. I went to their yard and was helped by very friendly guys who asked what type of wood I was looking for, the aesthetic, etc. We hunted around the yard together for the perfect piece and found one! They cut it to the perfect size, cleaned it up, sanded it down, sealed it - everything. They got it ready to be mounted using really heavy duty floating shelf mounting hardware (sold to me, at cost) for more than half of what I would have paid for a fake "distressed look" mantle of the same size. What's even cooler is my mantle had square nails in it so that was an indicator that this thing predates the civil war, which is just mind-blowing. I went back to these guys to create some custom decorative header beams (maple) and live edge floating shelves (dark walnut) and they're still much more affordable than anything I was quoted from local carpenters, and the quality is so beautiful. read more

During the brainstorming process, they were very communicative and helpful. The owner was super patient and answered all my questions and was interested in spending time with me to find out which woods I liked for my project and how things could get built. (I was surprised the person talking to me so long was actually the owner!). After choosing design and wood, he kept us abreast of the progress and everything was finished on time. All I can say is WOW! Had a great visit today and met Jeff and Mike while looking for some hand hewn beams for a fireplace mantle. There is a huge inventory of every conceivable type of wood displayed around the property. I did my usual "Mom" thing and asked about the beams on the bottom of the pile. I've been looking for an old rustic wood beam for my house for months and found the beam of my dreams at This Old Wood. I worked with Jeff, who was very helpful, showed me all the different options for the beam I was looking for, and didn't get annoyed when I wanted to look at one from the bottom of the stack. Once I picked my beam, he sanded to help the saw patterns come out, cut it to the length I needed, and helped load it in my car. The prices were excellent, especially considering the quality of the piece I purchased. Jeff was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and passionate about what he does. This place used to be a great supplier for old wood and always was honest and trustworthy. Recently I trusted these past experiences of buying old wood and sent my wife down to get wood (wood I had called about twice being 2" thickness) I saw this wood this morning and it is not 2" thick but I was charged for 2" thickness. The thickness was not measured in front of my wife. Some of the wood is also glued but it was discounted slightly but not enough to account for the new higher prices. Mike was great to deal but now he is mostly retired. Jeff is in charge now and seems all about the money and not pleasing customers. I would put other suppliers above this place in the future. I did call and inform Jeff and just ask for a partial refund based on the thickness inaccuracy and this was met with "I will think about it". This experience is very sad as we have spent multiple thousands of dollars with this business over the span of several years. I truly hope they can change this experience for new customers. Edited to add: Since writing this the business has contacted and stated they are sending a refund check for the difference in board thickness. read more

I went to this old wood looking for some pieces of wood to build a bonsai bench. Guys that work there were great and ended up showing me their entire yard. I ended up walking away with some really interesting pieces of wood. They were more than willing to cut them down to size and essentially give me instructions on how to build the table and do other forms of woodworking. To be clear, I am a novice when it comes to all of this. They were awesome and I cannot wait to go back. I have reached out to them since I left and they have continue to give me advice.
