Ordered a little bit of all the yummy flavors they had (Donuts: guava cheesecake butter, ube coconut butter, mango passionfruit, strawberries 'n cream, raspberry lychee, blueberry cheesecake; Muffins: churro, ube and black sesame). So delicious! We went on a holiday so there was a bit of the line but it moved quickly. Tried the special banana bread pudding mochi cake (probs not the exact right name) and strawberry mochi muffin and OH MY. What a fun day for my tastebuds. Did I mention that the banana bread one had chocolate chips?!!!! And the strawberry tasted very strawberry, sweet with a tinge of sour which made it flavorful but not too sweet. We also had the ceremonial matcha drink iced. Definitely good matcha but a little bitter for me. It is literally just high quality matcha, nothing added and it was amazing in small sips. For comparison, I usually get 25% sugar boba and I felt like I would've enjoyed maybe a matcha latte instead of the ceremonial matcha drink. These donuts are really the worth the hype! I had these mochi type donuts at Berkeley bowl, but they are so much better in person and freshly made. I was in Berkeley running a errand and had stopped by for a coffee and Donut. This was not the 2st time stopping by, but this time the line was not super long. I had a pour over coffee and bought 1/2 dozen donuts. Passion fruit donut, Guava cheesecake and ube donuts were really good. People were really nice and they were very helpful. I absolutely love third culture! It's probably one of my favorite places to grab breakfast, and I'm very lucky that it's within walking distance of my home. I can't recommend the Matcha latte with strawberry lychee enough, and I'm always excited to try their newest mochi muffins and mochi donuts, the staff are always really pleasant and friendly, and I love that the store feels like a pleasant brunch party, with fun, music, and lots of decoration. I've followed TC from the very beginning and was super excited when they finally opened up their own storefront! Their mochi muffins are still sold in many coffee shops all over the bay - check their IG for exact locations. BAKE GOODS: To be honest, I'm not a big mochi fan. But what they created by marrying a mochi and muffin is truly delicious! They've expanded their mochi collections to different sweets - donuts and waffles, in addition, to pronounced new flavors - ube, churro and thai tea. For drinks, I highly recommend their matcha plover!! Although, I'm not sure if it's a permanent item at their location, if not, they should change that ;) SERVICE: Their owners are amazing and super friendly! You can tell they put their heart and soul into all their creations. AMBIANCE: Their shop is located in West Berkeley where it's a little less busy, so parking isn't too hard to find. Third culture Bakery is located in Berkeley, CA on 8th street! They are known for making their mochi donuts, mochifins, and matcha drinks! I ordered 3 of their mochifins which are the orginal, matcha, and Ube! My personal favorite was the orginal mochifin because of the the texture was spongy and loved the sesame seeds as texture! It was soft and squishy and had a lot of flavor for a mochifin! I really like the matcha one as well because it wasn't super bitter to me and the balance of sweet and bitterness came through in this mochifin. I was not a fan of the Ube mochifin because you barely taste any Ube and it was like a soul search to find the nutty flavor and the sweetness. I also ordered 3 of their mochi donuts which were the strawberry, key lime pie, and the Ube coconut! My recommendation would definitely be the key lime pie because the bitterness of the key lime pie balances out with the sweetness of the sugar! It was definitely very delicious and would really recommend this mochi donut! I liked the strawberry one as well however, I wish I had a stronger strawberry flavor because I feel that I didn't get enough. The Ube coconut again was a miss because I was searching for the Ube in the donut and couldn't taste the nutty sweetness I was looking for. Liked the coconut shavings on top though but the Ube to be honest was not the star. Overall, those mochifins and donuts made my day! Definitely recommend this place especially the key lime donut and the original mochifin. They make it covid friendly and only let in two parties in the bakery. The original mochi muffin is hands down one of the most delicious things I've ever had. I wouldn't say it tastes like mochi or has the exact texture, but it has a similar squishy, glutinous texture. The mochi donuts aren't as mochi like compared to the muffin but are still delicious. If you've ever had Modo donuts you'll see it's very similar just in different shape. The ube custard cupcake was definitely interesting. It had a creamy texture on the inside that was a bit more solid that a typical custard. The flavors for all the treats were very spot on! The outside was even slightly crispy. Now lets chat about the black sesame mochi muffin..I'm sorry to report, but this one was bad. Maybe it's not a popular flavor or I just got a bad batch. But it tasted like it was sitting out for at least 2-3 days. It wasn't chewy and just tasted kinda flavorless. The black sesame flavor was lacking for sure, but the worst part was how it didn't taste fresh at all. I even tried to microwave it to make it softer which helped, but it still tasted bad. Dear Third Culture Bakery, I am an east coast gal. But I heart the west coast. When I visit our family in LA and SF, I usually don't want to leave. I feel like a part of my heart and identity belongs in the Bay Area. I first discovered your mochi muffins at a flee market in SF. I was hesitant since I am not a fan of mochi (I know, what kind of Asian am I?). But I'm always striving to try new foods. I tried two of your mochi muffin flavors that day (one original, the other I forget) and it was truly love at first bite. The crispy edges. The soft and chewy centers with a bit of molasses? Donuts are good pretty much anytime of the day, and we have been trying to support local and small businesses while still sheltering in place. We were excited to discover one morning that Third Culture was added to Uber Eats and decided to splurge and treat ourselves. No regrets! :D Yes, their donuts are smaller than regular ones and you are definitely paying a premium for it. A half dozen was $18 so you can do the math there. However, they are SO delicious that I am okay with having it once in awhile! It literally felt like a box of happiness and we can always use a smile in these tough times. I tried one of their donuts at a Boba spot a long time ago and it wasn't the freshest as it was really late in the day. I must say this time I was blown away eating them at peak freshness. It felt like getting a surprise gift because we didn't know what flavors would be in the box. Our box included Mango Passion Fruit, Ube Coconut, Black Sesame, and Dark Chocolate. My favorite was HANDS down the Black Sesame with Ube Coconut being a close second. I am very much looking forward to stopping by in person when shelter in place is over to try out their other offerings! They have an array of Matcha drinks that look really good as well. This w/e is Third Culture's 5th birthday. I have been back more times than I can count. Alan calls it Mochi Land and their muffins are treats I bring to him. One original, one chocolate, one black sesame and one ube. I don't have a favorite, but the original comes close. I love the texture and the taste of all of them. .This w/e they have VIP packages available and I bought one. The profits will go to support the people of Ukraine. In the package was a variety of interesting treats, from passionfruit soda in a cool plastic glass shaped like a palm tree w/ a palm frond adorned straw, to chicken and mochi waffle w/ truffle honey to pour over. There were hand rolled black and white sesame daifukus and a jar of coconut pandan panna cotta w/ mixed berry coulis and fresh berries on top. Alan and I shared the soda, the daifukus and the chicken and waffle. The panna cotta was mine because he doesn't like the texture. In addition to all the food there were rainbow heart stickers and other goodies. I still have the daifukus to eat and my half of the chicken and waffle will be my brunch tomorrow. Needless to say, I have tried (almost) all of their mochi varieties. I was shocked when I had my first bite. Each were just so outrageously flavorful with just the right amount of sweetness, but you really just cannot go wrong with the sesame, matcha, ube, or the Mexican chocolate. So I first try third culture bakery back when they were little pop up and they were selling their goods through boba guys. back then when I tried it I looked forward to it cuz there really wasn't anything like it but when I tried it it wasn't when I expected. The baked goods from the ube muffin or the matcha muffin were overly moist and lack a crunchy texture but that's my own preference. Taste wise I found their baked goods to be pretty flat and neutral. And this time around when I was in the city of Berkeley in their neighborhood I decided to give them another try but unfortunately my sentiments haven't changed since the first time I tried them. I did learn that the soft moist texture of their muffins could be because they're infused with mochi recipe. Taste wise it still tasted pretty flat and maybe again it's just my preference that I prefer a traditional muffin. For the drink I got a hochicha which was pretty flat. I did order at half sweet still I expected the tea to be stronger but sadly it wasn't. I like the concept of third culture bakery I'm glad it's around. To be honest the service wasn't great. The cashier was rude and he yelled at us when I tried to go view the donut flavors. I understand that there are distancing rules during this time, but he shoo'd me away from the exact spot the other cashier asked us to stand while she took our order. So I'm not usually one for sweets, but donuts are usually one of those things that I am weak for. That and anything mochi these days is just a recipe for success. They have a decent COVID set up. FOOD: Mochi donuts. I got a bunch of different ones and in the end, it really just comes down to what flavors you like. In general, it's an interesting concept. A bit crispy on the outside (good), but a bit dense and chewy on the inside (weird?). I may have been hoping for a lighter inside, which I guess doesn't make sense if it's mochi, but one can hope. It is still a donut and I want a crispy outside, and a light and fluffy inside! Either way, for what it was, they're really interesting, and the flavors are quite good, depending on what you like. Would probably recommend at least trying. Mochi Muffin. Pretty much same concept, but these felt a bit more dense as they are thicker as well. I may have liked these more than the donuts, but I really haven't decided. Overall, it is a really interesting baked good that they've made here. If I had more of a sweet tooth, I would be all over this, but as someone who rarely goes out of their way to get sweets, I probably won't be here often. That and the price point is a tad much. Shortly after it was announced that the Bay Area was going to be sheltering-in-place for three weeks I found myself in the vicinity of Third Culture, and right before closing time! So I postponed my plans to go to Monterey Market to get some crusty bread in order to pick up some, perhaps, even more essential supplies - a mochi muffin or three to provide little rays of sunshine during the surreal times ahead! (Picking up bread at Monterey Market didn't materialize by the way - I took one look at the line there and did an about-turn - I bought a bag of flour instead at the Yasai Market). Anyhoo, back to Third Culture - I'm very familiar with their goodies, having gone back in the day when it was Sam's Patisserie, located inside Catahoula Coffee on Fourth Street. Since then, I've had their famous mochi muffins at various establishments, from Allegro coffee at Whole Foods on Gilman, to the 1951 café. So I was excited to go to their shiny new (to me) bakery in West Berkeley and it was a very pleasant experience, with helpful staff summarizing the charms of their donuts and muffins. If you're now worried about being mochi-less for three weeks, don't fret - they have plans to keep baking and deliver the goods to you. I won't pontificate on the mochi muffin - it's best to try it with no expectations - and my only wish for Third Culture is that Sam brought back his excellent savory scones. I'm going to freeze these now (yes you can!) and space them out over three weeks - I'm particularly looking forward to trying the ube mochi muffin. Enjoy your three weeks of introspection, y'all! I'm also giving the Third Culture Bakery 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * I talked to TCB owner Sam (back when it was called Sam's Patisserie) and he bakes with organic (pasture-raised) butter, eggs, flour, and fruits whenever possible. * He tends to use good local seasonal ingredients from sustainably-minded suppliers, e.g. fruit from Frog Hollow farm and chocolate from TCHO. * Their mochi rice flour is sourced from Koda Farms and I believe that they used to use Koda's organic flour but I'm not sure they still do as it's not mentioned on their site as organic. So today was my first time coming here. I heard about it a few years ago when they first opened, but was living in Hawaii at the time. First time I went, I had called ahead to make sure they weren't out of the donuts because we were arriving on the later side of the day. Delicious mochi muffins (that I now call Muffs) and excellent customer service! My favorite is Ube muffin hands down. I ordered through UberEats for pickup today and got a msg when my order was ready. When I got there there were a couple people in line so I called to see if they are able to just bring out my order instead of having to wait in line. Photo: matcha latte with oat milk I love that all their ingredients are as wholesome and healthy as possible. No sugar/syrup is added to the latte--only honey (which is a much healthier alternative) and it still tastes great!! I also chose oat milk because it's sweeter than soy. My latte tasted WAY better thank Starbucks and I don't feel bad drinking it at all bc I know it's just pure matcha, oat milk, and honey. I also love the vibe of the place along with the fact that it's locally owned by Asian Americans. They even gave me cards inside an envelope with a sticker pasted on my drink with a wholesome messages on it Totally unexpected but super cute! I went on a Sunday and there was long line outside even during COVID, so just keep that in mind. read more
