The desserts are to die for. I have finally found a fantastic cake shop in Vancouver to satisfy my craving for fanciful fine cakes. I have heard about Thierry a lot but somehow I never step into the shop until now. I tried the lemon tart (amazingly good, tart and not too sweet, with a crust which does not fall apart and yet is crumbly in the mouth) and the chocolate marquise. The chocolate marquise has a thin layer of salted caramel at the bottom which is chewy and not overly sweet or salted. Perfect balance. It acts as a good foil against the rich chocolate mousse. I love the attention to detail on the making of this slice of cake. The chocolate is fine. The thin layer of chocolate glistens with temptation. I am a chocolate snob and this is just awesome. The price is justifiable for the quality. It is usually very crowded and I am glad it is open until midnight. The cappuccino I had could be better, but hey, you are here for the desserts, not coffee. I missed the ordering deadline for my birthday cake, so decided to just grab some cake slices. I bought one of almost every pastry/cake slice they had available in their case that day. I unfortunately did not like any of the slices. The black forest cake and the rum fruit cake were completely over powered by the taste of alcohol. The chocolate mousse slice which I was really excited about was pretty bland... I also grabbed a tartlet -i believe it was peach or apricot? Also a disappointment as it had a odd aftertaste. I'd still like to try one of their seasonal creations- I had really wanted to try the pistachio line they had a few months ago. If it comes back around I'll definitely give it a go. read more

Just came by here for the hot chocolate festival. For this period, they have Taste of Peru, they use a 68% dark chocolate from Peru. To be honest... It really was nothing special, not much to comment on about the aroma or aesthetic to the cup, but yes, you can tell it is a dark chocolate flavor, and i found it very sweet. Small chocolate tablette and coconut sable on the side. Again, nothing special here. The price for the cup is $9.95.... which to me, seems like they are just using the event as a way to sell something outrageously priced. Perhaps the import of the chocolate is the most expensive feature? Perhaps... It might be worth sticking to using a more local chocolate for what the outcome was read more

Tricky to rate. I LOVED the lemon tart - definitely 5 stars for me - but the apple turnover was a letdown. The outside was dull rather than crisp and flaky, and the filling was like a cold applesauce. I enjoyed the few chocolates I tried, too, but they weren't anything super special. My boyfriend said his coffee was decent. I think I'd feel better about it if the ambience were nicer/cozy, but the seating area is very cafeteria-like and we didn't feel like we wanted to hang out there. A bummer, considering the prices. We ran into Thierry totally by chance. We were walking up Georgia St. after returning from Stanley Park, and there were no gelato shops. We made one turn to the right and walked up Alberni St. and luckily we found Thierry. As you can see the chocolaterie and patisserie is a sight for the senses. They have a wide array of baked goods, cookies, macarons, and ice cream or sorbet. Lastly, they make specialty coffees like B-52s, flavored liquid chocolates and handmade sodas. Why does it seem like most food is better in other countries?!: 5 Stars. I chose a blueberry tart and coconut sorbet (I initially chose pistachio ice cream, but they ran out). The blueberry tart was insane!!! The blueberries were super plump and the crust was to die for!!! 5+++ Stars. The sorbet was also excellent. The coconut flavor really came through compared to sorbets at the market: 5 Stars. Unfortunately, the service was spotty. The cashier said they had pistachio, when they did not. My friend's chocolate ice cream was just sitting on the counter melting when we figured out they didn't have pistachio. In addition, our table had not been wiped down: 2.5 Stars. Service - When it's crowded, it gets hectic. They have a number of staff members taking orders, but there really isn't a system. What we figured out (finally), is you put in an order, and then they place your items by the register. 3.5 stars... a notch above any regular spot but a few misses. Thierry Chocolaterie and Patisserie tries to bring a bit of the French pastry scene to the downtown Vancouver. It sits in the same upscale neighbourhood where you can find Tiffany's, Laduree, and consulates. It's where you find lawyers dressed in robes quickly grabbing a drink and croissant between cases, yoga moms with their big baby strollers, and ladies who lunch. It is a bit like a French bistro with it's cute little patio outfront with it's overhang offering some shade from the bright sun. The inside is all shades of the chocolates... molten brown warm hues are everywhere and then dashed with a bit of golden gleam. Seating inside is limited. Though it is half the space indoors, there are only maybe 8 small tiny tables inside. The offering here on a weekday is not much but they do have a full espresso bar with many packaged sweets. The actual patisserie place had only 4 items with 2 larger cakes and then they had some vienoisserie in another case. I would have liked to try some of the pastries but for an early morning walk, I was feeling more of their famed mocha and I've heard of their croissants being quite good. Mocha - I love when a chocolatier using their own chocolate to blend in the espresso and milk to make this. Soma and Soul chocolate are a few small bean to bar chocolatiers in Toronto that do this wonderfully. I was hoping the same and ... it just missed the mark. The chocolate is a nice tempered bitterness but there was too much milk and water. Not enough coffee or chocolate to make this more than a watery diluted drink. A shadow of what it could be. 3.5/5 Cappuccino - Same results as the mocha but except it has less flavour because of no chocolate. It's watery and lacking coffee notes of any kind. I understand this is a pastry focused spot but cappuccino and a slice of cake is a perfect afternoon snack? 3/5 Almond croissant - This fared better than the drinks. Good clear delicate layers sit on top of each other and filled with a generous smear of marizipan and dusting of almonds. The croissant itself is buttery but not light... it's baked up perhaps to the point where the delicate buttery layers becomes hardened crust instead of emphereal buttery whispers. 3.5/5 I think there are a lot of great potential flavours and the cakes do have a wonderful charm to them but for the drinks and croissant, it just didn't live up to the reviews previously done. read more

They close very very late, has a heated patio, and is located in central downtown, minutes away from all forms of public transportation. Thierry's chef used to be the pastry chef at Cin Cin I believe and they are owned by the group of restaurants that also operate Blue Water Cafe, West, Araxi and Cin Cin I believe! Anyways, I've tried the majority of items that are offered at Thierry except for their (very expensive) chocolates and sandwiches/soups. Their desserts are excellent but to be honest, I'm not completely crazy about ALL of them. My favourite cake would definitely be the chocolate marquise, a succulent chocolate cake made with layers of praline, hazelnuts, and decadent chocolate mousse. I've had this cake several times, both as an individual slice and as a whole cake (for my friend's birthday). It is very very dense and indulgent so I would recommend sharing. Their macarons are actually just okay. They're actually quite large so you can order a couple and cut them in half to share. The reason why I'm not giving them 5 stars is because I have had a few of their "too sweet" cakes, such as the triple chocolate cake which was not only too sweet but slightly alcoholic, and their seasonal mille-feuille, which is really really really sugary. If you like rich desserts, this is perfect for you. The cake was moist, but unfortunately extremely sweet. Passion Fruit Cake - Visually appealing as well. The passion fruit cake has passionfruit mousse, white genoise, & passionfruit gelée. This cake was perfectly balanced. But if you're someone who can't eat sour/tart stuff, I wouldn't recommend this. Coffee Macaron - Mediocre Earl Grey Macaron - Mediocre Mocha - Extremely sweet Overall, my trip to Thierry was disappointing as there wasn't a vast selection to choose from. Let me try to make this short and semi-sweet: Well reknown Theirry's.. your coffee isn't frothed properly :( maybe the temperture wasn't right.. but there were so many bubbles in the foam and it went flat way too quickly. I was expecting better. On the brighter side: Your macarroons did live up to my expectations :D and they are affordable compared to a lot of many other places. And they are large enough that I could savor each and every last bite, and was left satifised! Perfect amount of sweet, and just a bite enough for me to share with others who want a nibble. I can't wait to try your other flavors. I will skip on your latte's tho. Was able to try a few fruit tarts, and eclair.. and nothing jumped out at me. This seems to be a hotspot, at least per food writers on the Vancouver scene. I came there twice, once having tea and a chocolate croissant, and the second time for a chocolate marquise (think rich chocolate mousse/ganache atop a caramel layer and salted praline in a cake-like slice). I have to admit to being underwhelmed by the croissant. It didn't have the airy, flaky quality that I've seen in the best croissants, and the chocolate inside didn't feel especially special. On the other hand, the chocolate marquise was quite delicious (that caramel will make you work, though)--enough for me to eat the whole thing, even though I probably shouldn't have. Up until now I used to go to True Confections for my after-dinner dessert cravings, and that's all the way in the west end and is at best a 7/10. Thierry on the other hand definitely is a 9/10 ! Delicious range of pastries an desserts, and the macaroons - oh my ! All the other reviewers are right, these are the best macaroons in Vancouver ... Honestly the vibes were incredible here and the food was also great. Thierry is located in a part of town filled with luxury clothing stores so I thought it would be very expensive when I entered. The prices were a bit higher than a normal dessert store but I wouldn't say they were unreasonable considering how nice the interior is and the location of the dessert store. To be completely honest, the names of the desserts aren't super clear to me because they are in French, but I assure you that I enjoyed them all. I bought one with three layers of chocolate. The top one is white chocolate and it's decorated with a chocolate flower. It was lighter than I expected and was very filling. My friend got an eclair with a chocolate and espresso flavoring. Probably my favorite dessert out of everything I tried. The espresso flavor was strong but authentic. My other friend got a chocolate square and the interior was a denser chocolate. Definitely the heaviest out of all the desserts we tried. The quality of the chocolate shell was also a bit suspect since it might have been older and not fresh. I also got a macaron that was a mix of earl gray and blue berry. Super yummy and I have no complaints about the macaron other than the names are hard to understand so you don't know what you're eating. I think you can order anything here and it would taste good to be honest. The cashiers were nice and gave me water refills. It's a chocolaterie, a patisserie, and a cafe. Which, of course, means you can satisfy you're three main addictions in one happy place by getting a beer, dessert, and chocolate. When you're in the mood for a treat, Thierry is the best place to go. There are so many amazing options and the coffee is delicious to go along with it. The chocolate marquis consists of hazelnut dacquoise, salted caramel, crispy praline and chocolate mousse... IT'S SO GOOD! Very rich, so I recommend sharing and having it with a coffee.
