Out of all the cafe's in town, this one is a clear miss. It is a chain, making it understandable that the food is so plain. Not worth the price. They are also very busy usually, particularly on weekends, so it's also not worth the wait. Plenty of seating is available but it still tends to get packed regardless. Tons of yelling out orders, one of the waiters voices cracked as they yelled the same name again. Cute seating area for studying. I just would not recommend if you are looking for a really good cup or coffee or a delicious breakfast meal. The food is subpar. read more

We were staying right next to the works so we decided to try it out. We got the super chicken panini and Mac and cheese, and I got an iced vanilla latte for coffee. Food was really good, especially the panini. Coffee was ok, tasted watered down and a bit artificial. Overall a good quick breakfast spot. read more

I really enjoyed the Mac and cheese, ive never had a Mac and cheese feel healthy and truly filling. My boyfriend got the barbecue chicken melt, I took a bite and it was pretty good. The service was good, the workers seemed to get along well. The cafe itself is very quaint, students seem to go there to study and it's not the quietest for those who want a pin drop silent cafe. To be fair this post is about their attitude over the phone when it comes to food orders placed through delivery services. Saturday, May 4 a group of us were working overtime and ordered lunch from the Works. Please explain to me how they forget the biggest item in the bag. Price wise and actual size wise. When we called to find out what happened they said to take it up with the delivery service. We offered to come get the item the didn't pack and we were told it wouldn't be worth it because it would take to long and we would have to wait. For an item you already made but didn't pack? Long story short, if you are short staffed or overworked you can change things to work in your favor. Don't be like this place and blame others. My coworkers might keep going here but I won't be. We were looking for outdoor seating, and this had that going for it plus a variety of foods to accommodate for different peoples taste, including a vegetarian. The sandwiches were good and the wuinoa bowls were satisfying. Service is fast and there is a lot of seating, both indoors and outdoors. This is a great café for the town of Amherst. Good food and good service. When I misplaced my credit card at their business, they set my credit card aside in a safe and secure place, so no one would use the info on the card. I checked my credit card app, and there were zero signs of any staff member using it for their own gain . I am very grateful to the staff for securing my misplaced credit card until I track down where I last used it. read more

We had a business meeting in the area last week and we ordered and breakfast for delivery from this location. Everything was wonderful, people really enjoyed the bagels, fruit, yogurt parfaits and muffins. The muffins were huge. They were only slightly late but I can't blame them for that because the office location that we were in was very hard to find. I had a hard time getting there. I don't know what happened to the order today, but it differs from what I usually get. I ordered online for pick-up ASAP (15 minutes) a cheese, scrambled egg, and sausage breakfast sandwich on dark toasted French batard. Everything was cold, and the bread was lightly toasted. Couldn't eat it because I didn't have access to a toaster or a microwave. I think all workers in each shift should be trained to prepare the food the same way. Hopefully, next time, I'll get the order right so I can continue being a loyal customer. read more

I was a regular customer of the Works for several months, then they told me to leave for no reason, and they have refused to explain the decision. I called to make a very large lunch order for mine and my wife's entire wedding party of about 12 people back in August. I needed the items bagged in specific groupings so that we could easily drop off the food to folks getting ready for the wedding in different locations. Between all the allergies in the group and modifications made per item, this honestly wasn't a simple order. The person who helped me was incredibly professional, friendly, and organized, and he easily understood my request and executed the order flawlessly. Seems like it's always busy but it makes sense! The food here was SOOOO GOOOD. It's hard to find delicious salad where it's an actual good mix of veggie protein and carbohydrates. Their caesar salad dressing oh god so creamy and seasoned with garlic (chef's kiss) and the pesto quinoa bowl is such a special flavor combo! And the portion size is very generous. I have been coming here for awhile now. I always get the same thing: Turkey Avacado Bacon sandwhich. The mixture of lettuce, bacon, avocado and sliced turkey create harmonious textures that is sure to please both carnivores and picky dieters. The savory herbs on the turkey compliment the creaminess of the avocado. The neutral flavor of the avocado adds a base for the turkey to shine, providing a soft and chewy texture that enhances the bread. Unrelated to the sandwich, the line was too long, understandably, but the low efficiency made it a grueling wait. There was a few times especially during Covid when the line was so long that made it impossible to socially distance. If adjustments are made, I am more than happy to change my review to 5. But for now, I'd give this place a 4/5. read more

Frequent Amherst visiter, first time stopping in here. What I feel needs to be in the forefront is my first of two issues. I ordered a mocha iced coffee (which was absolutely delicious) BUT, there were NO dairy free options for a cream/milk substitute. For someone like myself who can not consume dairy, it was quite disheartening. Especially for Amherst. Another note-- The place was packed. During a time like now with COVID, and the unknown that it holds, there were next to no precautions in place. Masks were worn and there were two hand sanitizer pumps but that's it. No social distancing while in line, tables were crowded. A bit sad to see. Anyways. Menu wise--things looked good, and there were many things that caught my eye, so I'd go back to try a few things. I went with my brother and he spoke highly of the food. That too was promising. 3/5 stars for not having a dairy substitute and the whole no precautions deal. read more

Was seeing foliage nearby and stopped here to grab some takeout for a picnic. The mozzarella and basil sandwich was the best thing by far, it was extremely fresh and flavorful. We got one of each of their speciality macaroni and cheese, as well as a classic one. All the specialty Mac and cheese didn't really have any flavor, not even cheese flavor. They all just tasted like the ingredients in them, none of which seemed like they had any seasoning or even salt. The classic macaroni and cheese was disgusting, no way around it. We all agreed the classic one tasted like... dish water. There weren't a lot of pandemic precautions in place upon pickup either. The hand sanitizer they had out didn't even work. Updated review: The last 2 times my sandwich has been disappointing. Requests for toasting the bread have been ignored. As did my most recent request for pickles which I paid extra for. The Works is becoming my go to restaurant because I love their ancient grain bowl. Lovingly created with sprouts, quinoa (huge amount), smoked salmon, a boiled egg (covered with pesto), diced tomatoes and avocado - it is extremely filling and very shareable. This location was very nice in downtown Amherst. The line moved super fast for lunch time and our bowl was done quickly. I could eat one of these bowls every day - so in love with this flavor combo! This cozy cafe is definitely worth a stop. The food was delicious! Both my mom and I have celiac disease and we had a lot of options to choose from! The Gluten Free chocolate chip muffins were the best i had tasted since my celiac diagnosis. The staff were very helpful as well and they were very understanding and accommodating of all our special dietary needs. Mehhhh. Surprised they are still in business. Everything I've ever ordered from there has been just... gross. I used to work downtown Amherst and there are only a few in-and-out lunch options. I got sick of Antonio's slices, thai bowls, and bueno tacos, and gave this place multiple attempts to impress me. Coffee, soup, salad, sandwich, bagels. Nothing seemed to work. It reminds me of one of those stands in the airport that you go to and sacrifice $12 knowing upfront your sandwich is going to be slimy and old, but it's your only option. Older lunch meat, microwaved eggs, stale coffee.. you get the hint! Service is super duper slow, too. I am looking forward to the next place that might occupy this building.. lots of potential in this area is lost with The Works. read more

I'm not sure what I love more about this place: the food or the people. I've never had anything that I didn't like here and I never left without a smile on my face. My go to is the rosemary olive oil bagel with sausage and cheese. It's simple enough, yet so complex. Delicious! I've also had the jalapeño cheddar, too. They're perfect for sandwiches or black bean burgers and still taste great if you use them the next day. The bagels are still soft and fresh inside and perfectly toasted on the outside. What I really love about this place is how fresh, local, and sustainable it is! It's good food that's good for you and you can tell everyone there genuinely cares about what they're providing you with. I also found out that they use vegetable based plastics that are 100% compost friendly! This place is winning on so many levels. read more

The Works is a New England chain focusing on local fresh ingredients. This is not Panera and they are not trying to be. Breakfast options all day, as well as soup and salad. The only place in the Valley for a real, clean, smoothie. Tried the Huevos Hamchereos and it was good. My Razz smoothie tasted great, fresh, and clean. I come here often on a Sunday morning with a group of friends. If I arrive before 10:00 service is usually Ok. After 10:00 the line is usually quite long with only one person taking orders at the counter. Service is so slow that even if I want to order another cup of tea or a pastry, I am unwilling to wait in the long line. More counter staff would certainly result in more orders! read more
