This BW Premier property is no frills and just what you need in the city. A lot of people complain about it. Here's the straight story. Come prepared. Don't expect the Shangri-La, and focus on the location and price. The room had a hotpot for water to make pour-over coffee or tea. Not very convenient, so I brought canned Starbucks espresso and cream. Problem solved. The fridge was barely cold enough, but it worked for what we needed. It's an old building, but it has charm. The elevator is small, max 5 people. I don't like to be in one with more than that anyway. If you can suspend your elitist nature, this place works just fine. The restaurant at the bottom, connected to it but not affiliated, is not great. MOST importantly, the service and the employees were top notch! They were happy, polite, and helpful. read more

I booked The Whitehall Hotel through Southwest Airlines, so it was quick and convenient. The Whitehall is boutique hotel on the south part of the Magnificent Mile, located near the Museum of Contemporary Arts. Upon entering the hotel, there were people in the outdoor smoking area, which was unpleasant (but definitely convenient for smokers). When I approached the front desk, neither of the front desk staff were particularly friendly. Once I got all checked in (there was confusion in their system because Southwest had entered my full name as both my first and last name), things ran a bit more smoothly. The room was the perfect size for a single person planning to not spend much time on site. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's no frills, but it is a great room for a great price. I would be lying if I said there was anything special going on here other than their vast history. I was excited to stay in an historic hotel in such a convenient location during a conference in Chicago recently, but this really wasn't my best experience. There was nothing wrong with my room, and the area felt really safe for the most part. Unfortunately, the attitude of the desk staff is really what ruined this experience for me from the start. Immediately upon check-in, I could tell that the agent was in a bad mood. The man in front of me didn't speak English very well, and she seemed frustrated by that. I understood, so tried to be extra nice to her. I had already filled out all my forms online, so I gave her my ID and she handed me a key and a form to sign. She had a pen in her hand, but nodded to one on the far side of the counter for me to use instead. After I signed, she just stood there and didn't take the paper away, so I wasn't sure what else she needed from me, but I guess it was nothing. I had a couple of questions for her as I was visiting a new city, and was on business so I had a few logistical questions. I first asked if there was somewhere I could get a water as I was a bit sick from the car ride from O'Hare. She replied "I guess you could go to our restaurant." I was, of course, looking more for a vending machine, or that one might be in my room. Next, I started to ask if I would be able to leave my bag there after check-out. Before I could even finish my sentence she very rudely interrupted me and said "and you need to leave your bag. That's fine." I didn't dare ask her for a restaurant recommendation as I typically would in a new city. As I said, my room was perfectly clean, but it was a little strange. The bathroom was very outdated, including a toilet that you might find in a lower class public restroom, and a very old shower. It was still spacious and comfortable, so really not an issue for me. Overall, my experience here was quick and convenient. I loved the historic atmosphere, but they need some major help in staffing their front desk. I don't know, you pay for what you get. The location is amazing. The area is safe and near shops and next to Michigan Avenue, which is very public touristy. The hotel meets basic needs, just don't expect anything more because the building is so OLD and pretty worn. I was traveling solo to Chicago for the weekend and it was enough for me - I didn't need anything fancy, just clean and safe. It's branded a historic boutique hotel, which sounds nicer but at the end of the day the hotel is OLD. The carpet seems old and worn. I found a couple of hairs from the previous customer in the bathroom. Housekeeping could have been better. Overall, okay and decent enough for me. The best part is the price and location. Physically the hotel is fine. Nothing to write home about. The issue with my experience was check in experience. For some reason the young lady who checked me in was fixated on telling that there was no smoking and no parties. So much so that she repeated it 3 times and then summarized a document out lining the same that I had to initialize. When I asked a question about it (if the parties and smoking are that much of a problem and you're committed to kicking out anyone in violation after a warning. What would be the composition for an adjacent room?) she was thrown off and look at me as if I had just arrived from Mars and said "Where's Elon". The reason I highly this is because of the implied bias that was riddled throughout the process. of the 4 other individuals/guests no other party had the same level of emphasis. The Father Daughter appearing couple had a lengthy overview of the property features available discount and gym times. Another young lady was giving information about breakfast. By my experience was squarely focused on all the smoking and partying that I better not do. The intent was so focused that upon receiving my key and heading up to the room I opened the door to find a middle aged man staring back at me in utter shock. We were both polite but also frustrated. if he would have been a she imagine how differently this moment may have been. When I returned to try to sort out the issue. I admittedly made the comment that "My check it wasn't all that great" (I feel it fair based on the experience. The young lady and the floor man then exchange looks he (floorman) asked her "what's going" and they both then moved out of my line of site. Taking note of the moment and what was occurring. I ask the gentleman who addressed my issue to tell me about the hotel. He looked a bit shocked as if to say "didn't you just check in?" and he shares a few bits of info. After about 3 second and me saying "Huh, nobody told me that." I think he got the point. TL;DR The hotel is cool but if you're young-ish presenting, a solo male or (gasp) look like me you may need to advocate for yourself a bit to overcome what felt like implicit bias. read more

A bit delayed in my review...better late than never. A historic and classic property in the upscale Northern part of Chicago, a few blocks away from the infamous The Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan...the property's glory days were in the past. The grandeur of the past is evident as you walk into the lobby, tastefully decorated with some opulence. The age of the property is quickly evident as you enter the elevator, a bit tight (enough room for two with luggage) so I recommend a lower floor so if you are able, use the stairs to go up/down. Rooms are of decent size with dark décor and comfortable beds; a fridge is available, but no microwave. While staying in the property in March, the on-site restaurant was not open so for coffee, snacks, etc., you needed to go off property. Pros: * Location is ideal - centrally located and close to The Magnificent Mile * Historic property * Great staff Cons: * Historic, meaning it's a bit dated * Gym is in need of updating - no cardio equipment; weights are "old school" dumb bells, pulley equipment - no tv, radio, etc. So for cardio, dress appropriately and run to the lake or The Magnificent Mile and back * Amenities are lacking - although there was a small fridge, no coffee maker, hot water maker, and bathroom was lacking the usual assortment of soaps, shampoos/conditioners. Great location, decent property...would I return, most likely not because for the price, other major hotel properties are available close by. read more

Bit old time, lots of things don't work (tv, bathroom lots of cracks, etc) but staff is very nice and price and location were right.

An Old fashioned hotel built in the 1930's. It has gone through 2 renovations. One in the 70's and one in the 90's. The lobby and Elevator and to a point the hallway are opulent. I got A Pinnacle room on the 20th floor of 21. The rooms aren't large, however they are cozy and comfortable with a king size bed. The bed while firmer than I usually like was very comfortable. The view from the room is very nice, not amazing, but very nice. Giving a view of some of the other skyscrapers. The room had two bed side tables, a desk, a lounger chair next to a small table in front if the window. Plus a dresser with a TV on it. The bathroom was a little odd. The toilet was part of the counter top. There was a shower/tub combo, with showerhead a little low, but workable. It did have good hot water though. Overall it worked and looked nice. Now to my negatives if the room. There are ZERO vending machines anywhere in the hotel. What? I have never seen that before! Next the bath towels had a thread count of about 5. A Tortoise shell might be softer. The blackout curtains meet in the middle, meaning there's a gap where light still gets in. Lastly the toilet is very low, felt like sitting on floor practically. Also the lid won't stay up due to it being part of counter. Another pro was it was very quiet from the point of hearing other guest. You will hear city noise though. The staff was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. If you want Ice or extra towels you just call the desk and they send it up. Overall a 4 star review. I got a very good deal on the room, by booking months ahead of time, plus it was the off season. Would I return? As long as I got another deal, absolutely. read more

Echoing the other recent reviews, you get what you pay for. This was roughly 1/4 the price of the Four Seasons across the street. The location was perfect for me. Ultimately, the experience was... passable. But, I've been staying here for the past three years, and have seen a steady decline. This time, the heat in the room constantly broke. The hot water in the shower broke. I tried to call the front desk, but couldn't get through. The hot, complementary breakfast didn't appear due to "issues with the kitchen." The room light fixtures are coming apart, and most of the outlets in the room did not work. Clearly, the owner of this hotel is not investing in upkeep. read more

Actually worse than a Super 8 or Motel 6. This is not an exaggeration. This hotel's ONLY redeeming factor is its location. Let me run down the list: the lobby looks like you're checking into a halfway house, and not one of the nice ones. The clerks are actually in individual cells... I mean, cubicles... with plexiglass sneeze protectors in front. At first glance I thought it was bulletproof glass -- that's the vibe the lobby is giving. The clerk told me that they "aren't doing housekeeping during guest stays." Also, no room service. After check-in, I hopped onto one of two available elevators, both equally filthy. Let off in a dark, narrow, musty hallway. Made my way to the room... where everything was falling apart. Holes in the sheets. Peeling wallpaper. Faux leather disintegrating off all of the furniture. Chipping wood on all the tables. But I was there, so I tried to make the best of it. When I turned on the TV, none of the "cable" channels worked. They said they'd send someone to fix it -- it took 20 hours for someone to come up. I called the front desk to ask if they sold/had bottles of water. They said that they didn't, but would send up a pitcher of water and ice. Two hours later I threw a coat on over my pajamas and went out to buy water. An hour later (three hours after I called), someone came up with a 12-oz carafe of tap water. As if the bathroom didn't have taps. Tried to go to sleep... and then the heat came on. It sounded like somebody was jackhammering behind the wall. "Pipes banging" doesn't even begin to describe the volume. I finally got so frustrated that I turned the thermostat down to 55 to make sure that it didn't come on again during the night. I literally have nothing positive to say about my experience here. If you pay more than $75/night for a room, you've been robbed. read more

I loved the White Hall. Always stay here. This morning went to take a shower and the water wouldn't turn on. Long story short. Checked out and told the man at the desk. He was very polite and said he would check into it. I went back there a few hours later and asked about it and he said the maintenance man went in and checked and had to pull it a-little bit but it worked. Well I pulled twisted and turned and there was no water. That's all they had to say. Like I made the whole thing up? They could've been accommodating in someway, but they weren't. I am so disappointed in the Whitehall Hotel and BW as a company. I called yesterday to reserve 2 rooms for a five night stay using my "Platinum Rewards Membership". I stay at the Whitehall in Chicago frequently for its convenient location despite the fact that it is a little care worn. I was quoted one price by central reservations and when I called back today, the price was significantly higher! I called the front desk and got a different price - slightly lower and then checked online and got yet another price - none of which aligned with what I was quoted 12 hours earlier! It seems chaotic and frankly unprofessional... despite my loyalty to this location, I feel disrespected as a faithful client. Do betting Best Western and Whitehall Hotel! read more

I stayed here in 2016 for four days. It's a terrific location but the room quality was just decent. Since I typically don't spend much time in the room, that worked for me - more time/money to spend on more important stuff But tonight, on 04/22/2025, I went online to book a stay of four days in May. I found a 20% promotional discount for 'Whitehall Days' but it covers only the first three days of what I wanted to be a stay of four days. So I called the hotel and talked with a guy who said he was the night manager. I said I'd like the fourth day at the discounted rate since I was already going for three days at that rate - after all, not many people book stays of four days, and I've always gotten a discount for a stay of that length at any hotel. He said he couldn't do that, would rather lose the entire four days of a paying customer and have the room sit unused - it was either too much trouble for him or he didn't know how to make it happen. Guys like this are why companies eventually go out of business. I'll book a different hotel and Whitehall will forever be off my list of companies I do business with...I'll never even look at them again. read more

Stayed here for two nights. Great location and clean room. Checked in with no hassle. It is an older building so expect very small elevator. Probably tough when the hotel is extra busy with tourists. The 2 bed room was surprisingly spacious for an older building. Didnt know that full service housekeeping was upon request only 24 hours in advance. So was disappointed when bed wasn't made up after first night. Lighting is not good and could not find an outlet to charge phone except by the TV where there was a power strip. So not convenient that it was not by night stand or close to bed. Other than that, appreciate the pluses we're a clean room and excellent location. read more

I decided on the Whitehall for my recent stay due primarily to its location. It's on Dearborn, just off the mag mile in the downtown area. It's a short drive away from the Fulton Market (home to some of the best food in the city) and walking distance to endless beautiful storefronts. Our room was sparkling clean, and we had no issues with noise or disturbances whatsoever. The mini bar was well stocked, so we didn't order any room service -- but the menu for the hotel restaurant was quite impressive. The only lost star comes from a particular staff member. The woman who handled my check-out at the end of the stay was very rude and it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. That said, the rest of the staff who I interacted with were quite friendly, and I will very likely stay at the Whitehall again. read more

Let me start by saying I'd stay in this hotel again. It was clean, the water was warm, and it was so easily accessible from the Magnificent Mile and the Lake. It is also walking or biking distance to the river and Trump hotel (where all the infamous green river pictures have been taken). I'd say the areas of improvement are the number of towels/pillows, the strength and number of outlets, and hospitality of staff. In our queen bed sized room, we got two towels for our stay, the outlets were few and far between and it seemed like our phones and cameras were dying 3-4 times per day. Towards the end of our stay, we were taking phone chargers to the restaurants to use their outlets. The staff at the Whitehall Hotel was also all business, but we were able to have a memorable conversation with head of security for a while, he was very pleasant. For the price and location, this hotel is fine. It's a very old hotel so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that more modern buildings have. My one major issue with this property is that you have to give the front desk a 24-hour notice to get housekeeping. One other negative is that the Wi-Fi is average at best. read more

Stayed here over the weekend. Over all nice hotel. I read the reviews on other sites and they seem to be a little harsh. The hotel was built in 1920s. Meant to be private and small for the social elite and the theme is very much so. The check in area has just two windows. The "lobby" seems crowded if more than 6 people are about. The lighting is dark (wether by theme or just lack of updating, I'm unsure). The elevators are very small, too crowded for more than 4 people, and that's without suitcases, but super quick which is impressive for a 1920s hotel with over 18 floors. Everyone that stood there had wonderful elevator manners which is a must. Yes like the other reviews say, the wallpaper was coming off in some areas but BARELY. The ceiling had some very small, barely noticeable damage as well but for the area location? Worth it. Especially if you're not going to stay in the hotel all day. Even if you were the tv might drive you crazy. You have to wait maybe 3/4 seconds between click, which in the day and age, could seem like minutes. They have amazing black out curtains. At 7:30am I thought it was 5:30 or a big thunder storm was coming. A few cons: No parking garage. You can use one across the street for 50 dollars a day! No housekeeping service was provide during our stay. So messy beds stay messy. Only fresh towels when called for. Things like that. The safe was kinda faulty ? I had to enter the passcode twice to get access. Not terrible but just annoying. Also, I'm sure there's no sound proofing. So if there's a conversation happening outside your door, you'll hear it. You'll hear your neighbor leaving at 4:30 am to catch a flight if they're stumbling. Children with parents. Cell phones ringing. Just keep that in mind. But overall I really enjoyed my stay. We recently spent a few days in this Boutique hotel, conveniently located just a block from the Magnificent Mile. The atmosphere is stylish, with great artwork (including a few Lalique pieces) and antique furniture. The bedroom was comfortable but the bathroom very small. I also wish they'd be a coffee maker in the room, even if coffee and tea are provided in the Lobby for free each morning. If you want to use the mini-fridge, you'll be charged $10/day. I don't think I would recommend this hotel for families, but for a couple it's certainly a great value! read more

We stayed at The Whitehall for 4 nights and could not rave about it more. Cheryl at the front desk was truly the best, we were celebrating my husbands 60th birthday and she made sure we had a great time in Chicago. From our room, to reserving a firework river tour, we simply had the best time in Chicago. The room was so big and the AC was pumping out cold air (which was perfect for the hot temps that week). People complain about vending machines and no coffee, but literally you can get to a Starbucks in 3 minutes and a 7-11 in about the same time. Was not a big deal for us. We had clean sheets and clean room and the location was amazing. We arrived early and left later in the afternoon after we checked out and they were happy to store our bags for us. Everyone was so kind. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks for a wonderful week in Chicago....we will be back!! read more

This was a nice little spot. The customer Service was good. There was another guess in the hotel whose name was similar to mine and they called my room for her in the middle of the night. Other than that startling experience, they were kind. The elevator was small so it was nice to know that no one would try to get on the elevator with you. The room size was nice. It was an antique feel to the room. Microwaves were limited and I unfortunately didn't have access to one. All in all, it was good for the price. It's situated in a nice area. Totally a decent place to stay if you can get a good deal. Our room was fairly big for 2 people but the walls are a little thin. I don't like how they don't have vending machines for ice but if you call down, they can deliver a pitcher of water for you but it's tap. One thing to improve on would be having firmer pillows - all their pillow options are SUPER soft and VERY flat so when you lie on the pillows, it's basically like not using one at all. It killed my neck for the 3 nights that we stayed there. Super convenient place to stay overall - easy 5 min walk to the Chicago Red Line and also easy to transfer to blue (O'Hare) or orange (Midway) line. Michigan Ave. and John Hancock tower is half a block away so it's easy access to the Gold Coast area or Streeterville. The 146 and 151 bus lines stop essentially on the cross streets of Michigan Ave. and where the Whitehall is located so it's really easy to hop on the bus to go north to Lincoln Park/Lakeview or go south towards Millenium Park or Museum Campus. We used all of these travel methods on our trip! read more

While this hotel is really well situated, I had a number of issues during my month-long stay (in town for research at the Newberry a half-mile away). They aren't set-up for long-term stays, so my concerns may not be relevant to everyone. * Policy was they would only clean the rooms when you asked, and needed to a day in advance. This was true for short and long stays. * No coffee machine or microwave in room. Two mini-fridges that were on but not very cold and so food continued to go bad. * Asked to move to a new room on a new floor mid-way through stay the morning they needed me to move for "maintenance on the floor." * Took me 40 minutes to check-in as staff could not find the manager who was also somehow the only person who could check in. Was ultimately checked-in by a new person clocking into their shift. No upgrade for the wait. * Not all lamps worked in the room. *Advertised small things that were not true: no HBO, no bathrobe; restaurant, kitchen, and bar all closed "for renovation." * Heat works to a point (8th floor) but then when got into F10s I was grateful I had brought my electric kettle and hot water bottle to warm the bed. The bed and linens were fine but everything was very brown, beige, and dated--something my grandmother would have loved. It seemed to have been renovated recently but things were't quite right. Wallpaper was overlapping in weird places and not done correctly. Some of the furniture busted and scratched up. I had originally reserved at Salinas for a long-term stay. They were then rented out for the whole month and so I was moved to the Whitehall, so it wasnlt something I had selected for a long-term stay to begin with. That said, given the price-point I still would not have stayed here for a short-term stay. All the staff were very kind. So this review is going to very direct. Here are the pros and cons of staying here. Pros: Location. It's right off of Michigan Avenue. you're only a five minute walk from....everything. Truly this location can't be beat. Price. This is a very reasonably priced hotel for its location, but be aware, you get what you pay for. The Beds. The bed was actually really really comfortable, as were the pillows. I slept very very well. Cable. They have a full cable option with all the basic channels as well as the ability to sign in with your own HBO go or Netflix. Heat. I know some previous reviews had issues with the AC. It was in the 30s during our stay and our heat worked wonderfully and our room was very warm. Restaurant/bar. They have an adjoining restaurant and bar that was nice, albeit overpriced. Luggage hold. If you are unable to check in early, they will hold your luggage for you so you can go hit the town. Cons Mold in the bathroom. Like, all through the grout line. I didn't feel like the shower was dirty but obvious visible mold should not be happening and it does make you wonder how clean the shower you are bathing in is. Outdated. I'm not talking so much the decoration, as I am just about amenities you expect in 2020. We had no plugs near our beds to charge our phones and have them by us at night. The only plug we were able to use was a power strip underneath the desk. It seems common place to have at least lamps with a USB port built in or a clock radio, but they didn't have any of that. While it's a minor inconvenience, it would go a long way to help in this digital age. Overall this was very much a 3/5. I'm not sure I'd be opposed to staying here again but I'd probably look for alternative options first. read more

Housekeeper started making noise at 6 a.m slamming doors and talking out loud. Front desk receptionist were not friendly at all. The pictures online show a bar and never saw one. It pains me to write this, because we've been staying at the Whitehall for many years, during our annual pre-Christmas weekend visits to Chicago. Don't get me wrong - this review will not be one of those scenarios where an out-of-town cheapskate weekender is offended by the high prices of a downtown boutique hotel. No, my friends - trust me. I make a good living and I was fully prepared to spend some money last weekend. But, even I was shocked at the financial mugging I experienced here last weekend, at the hands of the Whitehall. And, I've had enough. Examples: * $8.00 for a bottle of Fiji water?!?!?!?!?!? Are you kidding me? * $14 cocktails in the hotel bar?!?!!? * What's with that surprise $140 charge you socked me with, a day after I checked out?!?!? I left the room in better shape (and cleaner) than I found it. * $60 per night for valet parking?!!?!? Enough already! * And, as a side note, thanks for the broken pull-out bed in the ultra-expensive suite that I paid for. I could go on, but I think you all get the point. I won't be staying here again. This officially qualifies as price gouging. If you stay here, be prepared to have your bank account emptied by the time you leave, and/or your credit card maxed-out. read more
